I was after some gluten free cookies, and I didn't want to drive into Austin to find any. After googling local gluten free bakeries, Tough Cookie Bakery in Bastrop came up. They have gluten free options as well as vegan options and options for those who can have gluten. I went there for three out of the six days that I was on vacation in that area. I had originally wanted a chocolate chip cookie, but they didn't do just regular gluten free ones. However they did have gluten free peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. I'm not a big fan of peanut butter, but I thought I would try it since I was really craving a cookie. I had just the one, and it was so so so good! It didn't taste overly of peanut butter which was a win for me! It had just the right amount of peanut butter and chocolate chips. It was crispy around the edges and chewy towards the middle. I went back that same day and got two more of those cookies. The other days I went I got the same thing. One day, I did try their gluten free apple butter bar which was just as amazing! Service was fantastic! Each day I went, there was someone I hadn't seen before working. Each of them were super nice and friendly. The bakery itself had a very calm ambiance about it. It had a lot of space inside if you wanted to eat your meal or dessert inside or you could get it to go. I also love how Tough Cookie Bakery supports the LGBTQ+ community. There was a pride flag painted outside of the bakery, and that just made me love the place that much more! I would definitely recommend Tough Cookie Bakery in Bastrop. I can't wait to go back once we're back in the area at the end of this month. read more

The history and charm of this shop immediately caught our attention and drew us in. The original furniture pieces add such a warm and nostalgic touch to the overall aesthetic, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The only letdown was finding out that the ice cream isn't homemade or unique to the shop--it's just Blue Bell. Now, as a lifelong Blue Bell fan, I'll never turn it down, but with a place that has so much originality and character, we were hoping for a menu that reflected that same spirit. This is a cute bakery in the center of Bastrop. But you need to know that it is almost a 100% vegan, so if you don't like vegan bakeries, this is not the place for you. I got a peanut butter Krispy and it was so good. It was full of peanut butter. It had a chocolate layer on top and krispies mixed throughout the peanut butter. We also got ice coffee's and they had different creams available. I got the pumpkin latte. I couldn't really taste it in my ice coffee. My husband got vanilla and he could taste his a bit more. They offer 2 different sizes of iced coffee, medium or large. Even though I could not really taste the cream, the coffee was still decent. They also have art for sale, as well as a lot of nick knacks and inexpensive jewelry. I saw some as low as $5. It looked like it was pretty good quality too. They also have a seating area and it's pretty large. They just moved locations from an area that was right off of Main Street to this new location. I will definitely stop by again to see what other vegan treats I can get, but I know that my husband will not because he is not does not have a desire to eat vegan food. read more

This place is such a gem! I love going here for a healthy but hearty breakfast, in a cozy little nook downtown. They're mostly known for their vegan and vegetarian options, but as someone who eats meat, I always leave fully satisfied with the alternatives. Their vegan biscuits and gravy is to die for, and they always have a fresh daily quiche served with a delicious avocado toast. I recommend getting your toast on the pretzel bread, so yummy. The coffee is outstanding (I love their cold brew) and of course, they have a huge variety of freshly baked vegan and gluten free baked goods! Not only is there something for everyone, but the service is always so friendly, it feels like I'm visiting a close friends house for brunch. Darn. I was so excited when I found this place on Yelp, while searching for spots in Bastrop where we had an Airbnb for my friend's bachelorette weekend. The reviews looked promising and it seemed like they had lots of options for someone with gluten and dairy allergies. We came on Sunday morning and it wasn't busy, there were maybe one or two other patrons inside. The barista taking orders was not particularly friendly, but actually quite the opposite. She seemed over it all. Another thing that stuck out was their standing mixer was not in the kitchen, but out in the same area where tables and customers were. Seems pretty darn unsanitary imo. My friend ordered something that came with a side of fruit or avocado mash, and they said they could do it gluten free, so we got the mash gluten and dairy free for me to have. I even double checked when it came that it was gluten free bread. Well I ate it, it was pretty small given it was just a side, and being hungrier than I thought, when to order some toast as I liked the bread. I went to order and the barista said "you just want a piece of toast?" to which I replied yes and then paid $5.50 for it--not what I expected. I then had to wait 15 minutes for my piece of toast, as there was a couple who had just ordered breakfast ahead me and I guess they couldn't throw bread in the toaster at the same time. When it was finally done, it was two tiny pieces of bread that were completely different than the first bread I had. I went back and asked if it was for sure gluten free since it was different than the first bread, to which the barista asked the people in the kitchen, who said just said yes, yes, yeah. Shortly after, I got super sick given I have a gluten allergy. I will not be back. read more

The deserts here are delicious! Hands down: I'm a sucker for soft and chewy cookies and these are just that and also moist. I also have a super horrible gluten allergy, so I'm glad they offer things on the meal I can order. I'm vegan, so I ordered the May BLT. The May BLT is a good sandwich (mine has added GF bread). I'm not a huge fan of mayo, so I substitute it with mustard. I like what the tofu is marinated in...it gives it a good flavor. For the price, I wish there was a little more tofu in the sandwich to make it higher protein. That would make it perfect for me, but I'm grateful for the fact that there's at least one place in Bastrop to find something decent to eat for vegans! read more

Cozy little coffee shop and bakery tucked into the historic district of Bastrop. Lots of seating inside, a bit out on their patio - but take it to-go and walk down to the river! A 2-minute walk from this spot. If you follow my reviews, you know I'm on a tea kick and not coffee right now. They use HEB organics for their hot tea selection. A lot of various pastries to choose from - cookies, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, etc. The ginger molasses cookie was awesome! Room for improvement on their chocolate chip cookie though. This place made my heart so happy! I was in town for 4 days and visited every single day for my daily Cold Brew. Being a Vegan visiting a small town in Texas, I was worried I wouldn't be able to find something to eat. I was beyond ecstatic when I saw this adorable Vegetarian/Vegan eatery pop up in my search. Not only do they have a full breakfast and lunch menu with plenty of vegan options, they also have pastries that are all vegan! I tried their biscuits and gravy and their blueberry lemon muffin and they were both delicious! The Cold Brews I got were perfectly yummy! This place also sells some local crafts and witchy trinkets and other tchotchkes. Staff was incredibly friendly and I appreciate their inclusivity decor! The ambiance is funky coffee house chic which I enjoyed. The counter people were also very friendly. The cold brew was decent although I prefer a more darker roast but appreciated they had several types of milks to offer for it for the non dairy crowd. However I was extremely disappointed in a few things. They advertised "brioche" bread. It was not. The bread was plain white bread and very dry. I ordered their vegan blt. It came with three pieces of sad flavorless tofu. I took one bite and couldn't finish it. I managed to eat the filling because I was so hungry. Please work on your recipe for this and consider adding more filling for the value. It's a miss for me. The cup of soup was tasty but overpriced at $6.95 and so was that sandwich at $12.95. Small cafe style bakery-first I want to start by saying I am so thankful to have vegan options in bastrop! Not vegan even though online and reviews say they are. However they do serve some vegan options. We had the MayBLT -vegan tofu blt with avocado and mayo- it was okay, lacked a bit of flavor. It came with pretzels, hummus was extra. I think it would have been nice with chips or soup but it was hot as hell out. The bread was good, tofu wasn't saucy or seasoned enough maybe and they could have put more avocado, mayo and tomato to compensate for the lack of taste in the tofu. Watermelon basil aqua Fresca was amazing, needs a bit of sweetener but really refreshing. Seating is only on patio with three tables at an hour max seating. Mask mandates inside. I think they've done a poor job of marketing, because there's so much good here that isn't reflected in the name, & I've NEVER seen this place advertised. Very nice place and staff, 100%, but, for my taste, in the effort to be dairy free, vegan, and gluten free, as much as possible, they have lost sight of what most people expect items to taste like at a bakery. If you want healthy, you don't normally eat carbs, much less, bakery treats. We ordered the vegetable soup and Avocado toast all Vegan friendly, and the portobello panini with provolone on pretzel bread with aioli. Me and my friends entered Bastrop with high hopes and empty stomachs. After finding a few full diners we were especially hangry. We came across an oasis named the Tough Cookie. Walking up those freaking wooden steps and opening that stiff creaky door, a cute bell jingled. The smiling staff welcomed us into the empty restaurant. We took a few minutes to look at the elaborate menu. 70% of said menu included biscuits and the woman kindly informed us that they were out of biscuits. the bafoonery before us foreshadowed the fantastic feast we were about to have. We took a few seconds to order, and I felt my tummy jiggle and drool drip from my mouth; cinnamon toast. We went to sit down, admiring the 50-100 dollar paintings probably painted by their offspring and we waited so long, knowing they must be conjuring up something amazing in that kitchen. Finally, after much anticipation, the buzzer rang *vroom vroom* and we got up with fires burning in our stomachs that carried us over to the counter that housed our food. The scene which transpired next was a true spectacle in so many ways. They had both surprised and baffled us to the point of uncontainable laughter. Me and my peers could not control ourselves at the sight of the cinnamon toast. The toast was nothing more than the end pieces of burnt bread (Litterally), sprinkled with what some may call cinnamon. We carried our food to the table, bringing the metal tray along with us and hoped to God Almighty that it did not taste how it looked. It was everything but appetizing. Our dry rough crunches were reverberating off the wooden walls in the restaurant as we cursed the name of the tough cookie. Two of my peers ordered "Paninis" and they came with what seemed to be pretzels from Rold Gold they must have picked up a few years back from the local market. As we sat there, choking down the plastic pretzels and burnt toast, we wondered why we spent a collective total of 50 dollars on this meal. The only aide we had was the three day old piss warm milk with chocolate syrup (called hot chocolate). A meal reminiscent of what seems to be a child cook with an easy bake oven.
