Tried Toups StumpWater for the first time before a graduation on Friday, and we had a really good experience! Our table ordered a variety of dishes so we could try a little bit of everything, and honestly there wasn't anything we disliked. The crab balls with the swamp sauce were really good, and the battered & fried Monte Cristo with preserves was absolutely delicious. I stuck with crawfish, while my son got the fried catfish -- both were flavorful and cooked perfectly. What really stood out though was the service. It looked like our waitress was the only one working the floor, and she was absolutely killing it. She stayed sweet, attentive, and on top of everything the entire time. I really wanted to like this place because I actually ate at the original StumpWater Inn as a kiddo. Firstly, the service at this place was horrendous. We had to ask for drink refills and more hush puppies multiple times, and they came out in quantities of 4. For three people? Also, the hush puppies cost $4. They're $1/hush puppie. Secondly, my father and I ordered ribeyes and those were terrible too. They were basic steaks. Seasoned with just salt and pepper and crazy thin pieces of meat, no fat on them at all. They were not worth $40. When we walked in, the atmosphere was very tense. The two ladies in the front (one of which was our server) were fighting over who had to seat us. Overall not a pleasant experience and for spending over $250 for our meals was just not acceptable at all. Probably won't be going back here again. read more

Out first time here. Ordered the boudain balls for appetizers. They were frozen in the middle and not home made. Two other tables sent their food back, but we didn't want to overwhelm the poor bartender who was the waitress and also the manager tonight. Can't wait to come back. Randomly came across this places exploring the backroads. Looked like a bit of a hole in the wall. The staff is super friendly and it is super clean. Kinsey took great care of us! We shared the spinach artichoke dip. It was different than we are used to but loved it! Seemed to have more paremesan and mozzerella than cream cheese but truly terrific. Hubs had the shrimp etouffe and crab cakes and said it was phenomenal. I had the redfish tacos and slaw and loved them! We can't wait to visit again and try something new! read more

This place is a major rip off that lacks ambiance, is priced way too high and serves hot food cold. The only redeeming moment was the bartender. She was great and the reason I gave them 2 stars. We are local and were the only customers in the restaurant at 7 on a Friday night. They changed the menu since we had tried it out when they opened, and not for the better. The prices were ridiculously high. We travel often and these prices were higher than a lot of New Orleans restaurants. $60 Filet Mignon? $28 Pasta, $14-23 po-boys, not sure there was a single fried plate under $20. In comparison, all of the restaurants in the area that are comparable are much much cheaper and taste better. Like the place in Gilliam a few miles away- excellent prices and always packed. My Shrimp poboy came out wrong. I figured it was someone else's and they took the wrong one from the back, and that's when I learned we were the only people in the place. My husband finished his oyster poboy before I got mine back. They had obviously just taken 15 minutes to put the same shrimp on new bread because it still had traces of tomato on it and was cold. They charged me for jalapeños and only gave me 3 slices of pickled peppers. Fries do NOT come with the poboys, so the sandwich ends up being almost $20 with fries, and that cold crap was not worth it at all. I brought most of it home to my dogs. There was no ambiance. While Gilliam and the places out on the lake have bands, and this place had plenty of room for one as nobody was there, we were told they cannot accommodate a singer as there is no room . We will literally never be back. The parking lot was packed....with employees cars. If I'm gonna spend more than $40 on a steak I'd go to 2Johns or take the money saved from this place and go to Mayeaux down in Natchitoches where a plate with a 20oz ribeye (or comparable 8oz filet) with sides costs less than $50 (such deliciousness). This was our first visit. I had the Cajun Sampler with smothered greens. The sampler was good, and the greens were excellent. My wife had the fried shrimp and catfish platter, and it was good. The atmosphere I sphere was very nice and clean. The staff was very friendly. The only issue we had was the time it took to get our food. It took just over an hour from ordering till we got our food. After dinner we're ordered dessert and it took almost 20 minutes to receive. Because of the food quality we'll give it another try, but they have to do better with the service. Highly recommend working with the wait staff and kitchen area in getting the food out in a timely manner. read more

A local iconic restaurant that has been closed for several years is now reopening its doors. During a soft opening I decided to come out and see how they have done getting it going again. They have only been opening off and on for 2 weeks at time of this review. Looks like they did a good job so far, they should only get better as the staff and cooks get settled in some. They did a good job on remodeling and decorating as well, and hiring friendly hard working staff. They have obviously put a lot of money into this re opening so hopefully they stick around. The service was excellent, fast seating and quickly waited on. Mind you it was like 445pm on a Friday so wasn't very busy. Everything we ordered was good, seafood and fish said from USA or Louisiana which is big plus. Fried stuff was barely overcooked but no big deal. Fish was fried in a cornmeal batter pretty tasty. Only recommendation I'd make is home made fries and hush puppies. Fries were just frozen from bag seasoned fries and hush puppies were very basic. Home made fresh hush puppies and fresh cut fries would have made it great instead of good. The catfish Atchafalaya was good too, came with one side but for $25 I feel like it should have fries and hush puppies. Overall I will be back to try more stuff. I like that the menu is streamlined and not too many things to complicate kitchen or make it hard to decide on like when you sit down at dennys. Just have the basics and do them well. For starters the staff is AMAZING!!! The food is some of the best Creole I've had North of the I-10. I ordered half a muffaletta which gave me leftovers for at least 2 days and I was not complaining! My husband ordered Chicken fried steak and oh my lord was it big and delicious, and your meal wouldn't be complete without THE BEST beverages like the Stump Juice from the bar. The 72 dollars I spend there I could of gonna to the bar in Karnack and get better food. The boudin balks were over fried. No flavor. Same with the hush puppies. Gumbo had no flavor. Alligator bites had no flavor. As for the fried shrimp. That was good. But the fried fish was left to be desired for. I thought we try it to see what the rave was about but we won't be back. We had a baby shower and it was wonderful. The room was free with food/drink orders. The staff and owners were so helpful and friendly. Cajun food at its best and southern hospitality at its finest. I had high hopes based on what I heard about the place. Servers were very nice, but the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered shrimp creole. I found maybe five tiny popcorn size shrimp in a bowl of very sweet red sauce. It was not the New Orleans classic dish I was expecting. Others in my group had fried shrimp and they were large shrimp and they enjoyed them. Others had crab cakes. The cakes looked burnt to me and could have used a garnish for a more appealing presentation. Hopefully things will improve. read more

I want to start by saying, the wait staff was very nice and very good. no complaints there at all. The food, however, was not good at all. The shrimp creole with red sauce tasted and smelled like the canned raviolis in the red sauce and it wasn't hot at all. The appetizer was luke warm around the edges and cold in the middle. The salad was ok, not much to it. the fish tasted like mud cat. The frog legs and crab cakes were good. the manager came and offered to reheat my dish but I declined because heat wouldn't have helped that dish. It was very disappointing. Three of us ate lunch here, there is no lunch menu so no big deal we ordered off the menus provided, we ordered the following: cup of duck/sausage gumbo, oyster PoBoy, the shrimp appetizer and the fried mushrooms. The appetizers were the favorite of our orders. The duck gumbo was good, the oyster PoBoy was ok. I guess the food was acceptable by all means but we were all surprised by the prices example the oyster PoBoy was $17 and that's it no French fries included but for another $4 you can have some we chose not to. Food was great. Husband enjoyed the catfish good taste no extreme fishy taste like some places. Muffaletta was great and large for 1\2 sandwich. Only suggestion was to put Italian dressing or garlic and herb dressing on sandwich or small amount on the side instead if mayo as it gives a buff alerts a great punch of flavor.
