Once again we discovered that not many restaurants are open on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in Jefferson. Oh well, we stumbled into Taste of Caddo and were glad we did and that they were open because we were hungry! It's a decent sized small establishment with maybe 15 tables. The decor is East Texas/Louisiana which goes perfectly with the name. There were 6 of us, we were staying in RVs at the state park but wanted a break from doing our own cooking. The server seated us quickly and we soon ordered drinks. A few minutes later after the drinks arrived we put in our food orders. I decided to have a good old fashioned hamburger, they called the one I ordered a Swamp Burger but there was nothing swampy about it. 1/2 lb of meat, cheddar cheese, grilled onions and mushroom son a brioche bun and served with a good size helping of home made fries. My wife opted for lighter fare with the Chef Salad. Both of our meals were great and our friends enjoyed theirs as well. The place is quite casual and I imagine popular with locals as well as tourists. They were in no rush to get us to vacate our table, we finally had to ask for checks. Our server said, "just meet me at the register" so we lined up and paid our bills. When in Jefferson, give Taste of Caddo a try, they are doing a great job of serving up good food and hospitality. read more

The Taste of Caddo was quite a treat! My husband had the swamp burger (think Swiss mushroom) and raved about it. He said the beef was tasty, well seasoned, and seemed home/hand made. I had the clucker- grilled no bun with salad and enjoyed it very much. The ranch dressing was DELICIOUS. The people were kind and the atmosphere welcoming. Very enjoyable! read more

You don't have to drive to Caddo Lake to enjoy fresh fried fish. It's right here next to the Excelsior House Hotel. ToC is also home to fried shrimp, a giant chicken fried steak, and one of the best burgers in town. Complimentary spicy beans. Attentive service. We loved this place. It was quiet and unassuming but the service and food were outstanding. My Cajun pasta was hot, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Delicious fried shrimp (I wished I had ordered a bigger plate of them!) and the catfish filets were a hit with others at the table. We enjoyed a shared basket of huge onion rings, too. Don't get takeout!! Our only choice was takeout or leave the dog tied up outside. Portions were very disappointing. The Shrimp Pasta was delicious, but 4.5 shrimp??? Almost $3 per shrimp? Coulda gone for sushi and done better And the Southern Comfort portion was realistically child size at best -- C 'mon people rice is cheap. Theres NO WAY you serve these skimpy portions to people sitting in the restaurant. Service is also lower priority when you take out. They said it'd be ready in about 15 minutes, returned after 15-20 minutes and was told they're busy and it'd probably be another 20 minutes. On two separate occasions in the past year, we were camping at Caddo State Park and drove all the way into Jefferson to have dinner. Choosing this restaurant because we love catfish. Both times, the business arbitrarily decided to close early without making any notifications via yelp et al. Wasted trips and hard to find other places to eat. I asked the last time we tried to eat there if they could serve us since they had people still eating inside and they refused. Just decided to close early. A member in our group ordered the "large" shrimp plate for $14.99. Supposed to get 4 large shrimp, hushpuppies and fries. Plate had 4 small cocktail-sized shrimp on it. This wouldn't even be considered enough for an appetizer. Waitress told us to help ourselves to the beans, but the pot was empty. I thought a long time before I decided to review this place. My guess is that 85% of everything on their menu comes right out of the freezer. Overdone entree. The "bean bar" was sorely lacking in beans. Bottom line is seriously do not waste your money. This quaint beautiful city has several excellent places to eat- this is not one of them. The portions are awesome! That half portion of CFS fed both me and a friend for $9.99. My only gripe was that the steak was unseasoned. The crust was crispy, even under the weight of all that gravy. Which, made up for the lack of flavor in the CFS. The potatoes were perfect and the toast was addictive. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is in Jefferson on a shopping trip. Do you ever just need catfish?! Well, I certainly do. I have been coming to Jefferson for many years and have never had catfish this good unless I made a trip to Uncertain, at Caddo lake. I ordered fillets. They brought out a steaming plate with two beautiful fillets, cole slaw, hush puppies, and French Fries. I am always hesitant when I take my first bite of catfish because I know it will either be bliss for this Southern girl or NOT. It was perfectly cooked. The outside of the fish was crispy while the inside was layers of nicely seasoned and lovely soft tasty fish. We went their for lunch today. The 1/2 chicken fried steak was huge. Mashed potatoes are fresh potatoes. Okra was fresh.. I had the bunless burger. It was cooked perfect , seasoned well. I only gave it 4 stars because the piece of pie to go was tiny and service was really slow. But food was delicious and you get the salad bar and pinto beans with your meal. read more

Needed a place to eat after everything shut down for the day. It doesn't disappoint. Great food! We got a hamburger/fries and blt/fries. Not only were the sandwiches great, the fries were excellent as well. The only thing I would change is the music. Rock music isn't very conducive to eating.
