My daughter and Matt. Great motivator and Coach.
    Tasia M.

My daughter loves it. Her self esteem is improving and she's 16. She is not like when she first started coming here. Her body is getting fit, she's making better food choices and drinks lots more water. Her cardio has improved. We thank Matt for his passion for the sport and coaching. Definitely the best of the best. The entire staff is outstanding, we feel so welcomed and like we are family can't say enough about Matt and his hard work. Thank you.

UPDATE 6/2026: I'm…read moresad to say my opinion of this gym has really gone down since my original review. Sheree's Pilates, yoga, Yogalates, and barre classes continue to be challenging and effective. I've been her student for over two years now, and the difference in my abs and strength is amazing. That we can study with a professional ballet dancer for the price of a gym membership cannot be overstated, and to be honest, she is the only reason I'm still going to this gym. The turnover in trainers is ridiculous because they do not treat their staff well. I am a professional educator and understand people management, and what I see as an outsider corroborates what different former crew and former trainers have told me. Not one of the original staff from when I started is still there. Also, all the trainers that impressed me as a powerlifter and bodybuilder and gave me effective and challenging workouts are now gone. I don't want to have to keep starting over with a new trainer every few months, so I've canceled my training package. Finally, the turf area is kind of a joke. They still only have up to 40# KBs that I can see. They replaced the sled with this rolling thing that I never see anyone use because it "is easier for a lot of clients." Who goes to the gym to do easy things? I'm giving this review 3 starts because of Sheree Skiles and the fact that the pool is clean and I enjoy using it. I am disappointed to say the least. If you are serious about lifting, and fitness, I'd have to say look elsewhere.

I also wanted to…read morerespond to a review I saw here that I personally do not think reflects the environment of this gym. From my experience, this gym has been very safe and respectful for women. I have never been disrespected by any men here. I go at different times of the day, both mornings and evenings, so I see different groups of people, and my experience has always been positive. Overall, the gym is great. I really like that there have been upgrades with new machines being added. It's nice to see the gym continuing to improve the equipment for members. One suggestion I would have is adding more recovery options. The sauna is great, but many gyms are starting to offer additional recovery amenities. It would be really nice to see things like massage chairs, a cold plunge, or other recovery features added for members. Another improvement that could help would be organizing some of the machines a bit more by section, such as grouping leg machines together and arm machines together. Aside from those suggestions, I really enjoy this gym. It's a clean, safe environment and a great place to work out. The staff here are also great and very helpful. I saw some people mention that the blonde woman who works here is rude, but that has not been my experience at all. She has always been very nice. She may have a strong voice and might come across as serious at first, but once you talk to her she is actually very kind. She may just not be a super bubbly person, and that's okay because everyone has different personalities. I would also like to point out that all of the employees here have been nice and respectful. But I do hope the owner see my review and does consider adding more recovery options : ) That would be Greattt !!!

I've worked with many trainers over the years, and this has by far been the best experience I've had with a personal trainer. Not only has she helping me reach my fitness goals, but she continuously helps me become a better version of myself. Even with early morning sessions she always has a great attitude and is ready to help you have a productive session! She truly listens to my needs and is incredibly knowledgeable and has great expertise in powerlifting. As a person with a physical disability, I really appreciated that she never shied away from training me or treated me differently. Instead, she took the time to figure out how to modify certain workouts while still helping me accomplish the goals we set together. I also love the private gym atmosphere. I never have to worry about it being overcrowded and not getting everything we have planned for our session, huge plus it's always clean, and everyone is very welcoming. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone, no matter your fitness level or goals. You'll find a welcoming environment, knowledgeable coaching, and a trainer who truly cares about helping you succeed and become the best version of yourself.

I simply wanted to use the trial to see if the gym was the right fit for my needs without feeling pressured to make an immediate decision. Having worked in sales for over 10 years, I'm already familiar with the membership process. Despite explaining this upfront, I was still taken on a walkthrough that I hadn't wanted in the first place. After the tour, I politely declined to sit down for what I was told would be a "quick" discussion about pricing. At that point, I was informed that they could not honor my 3-day trial pass and was asked to leave. This was disappointing because I was under the impression that the trial pass could be used without any obligation to discuss membership or sign up immediately. I came in hoping to evaluate the gym, but instead felt that access to the trial was conditioned on participating in a sales conversation I had already declined before arriving. ‍ Better personal recommendations in the area : 24 hour fitness 3490 Madison St Riverside, CA 92504 United States Eos 335 E Alessandro Blvd Riverside, CA 92508 United States Chuze 6075 Magnolia Ave Riverside, CA 92506 United States

There have been so many changes over the years to the gym here at UCR, mostly to try to better the place. They've moved things around, made things nicer, added more things, and overall improved the gym space but adding things like extra power racks and now they have a weight sled on the second floor. Service is generally friendly but usually whenever I ask the front desk for things, they seem lost or they act like they don't care about anything. Overall, I do think that this recreation center is a lot nicer than other the other UCs. Some of my complaints include that they refuse to have higher dumbbell limits, since the highest dumbbells only go up to 100. I know it's not in-demand to have them, but if students need to progress, you'd think they'd add more weights. I also don't like that they got rid of some of the leg machines downstairs and moved them upstairs. By doing that, you're making students become even more lazy from doing leg workouts more often and you've created a chicken leg epidemic! haha If you're coming to this gym from outside of the university, I believe that they have guest passes for $5. But if you're from UCR, I highly suggest utilizing this gym because it's included in your tuition.

Sometimes the SRC gets crowded, but that's mostly after the New Years. If you avoid prime hours of working out you'll have no problem getting the machines you need. At first, I missed my old girlfriend (Athletics United) but quickly I started I became infatuated by Ape Arena. Right off the bat they bought all new equipment. Rowers, Bikes, Bars, Plates, Ergs, Racks, Dumbbells, Kettlebells. It is a first class operation. Not to mention they have meals, supplements, and fitness plans to help meet your goals. The owner is a nut. Yes I said it. He is all over the map in a good way. He has unlimited energy. He's the type of person that you wanna be around because he inspires and motivates you. He is very intense and he might be crazy (in a good way). With that said, Chris is the guy you want to train you and energize this group fitness environment. Chris really cares and is so passionate about good technique, gains, health and he loves to yell, play loud music and motivate you. It is a blast. He is in your corner. Chris is a solid dude and you will take the time to give you the tools for your success. Jessica (Chris' wife) also is very passionate about fitness. She is a beast, and has an extra gear and often works out with the group when she is not busy with new clients. Chris and Jessica are an awesome team! It is more than a business to them and they love what they do which makes all the difference. Workouts: Expect the unexpected. No other workout routine can give you so much in so little time. I think the best part of Ape Arena is the family environment. Most people here are not teenyboppers or people that are looking to date other people, they are folks that are established and are trying their best to achieve personal goals and there is definitely a sense of community when we're all working out together. What sets this gym apart from others I believe from what I hear from my other friends at other gyms is our coaches are absolutely amazing. In addition to Chris, you have Malik and Chity (I know I misspelled it) and they are alike in consistency but all have great strengths individually. Collectively they are all professionals and masters of their craft and they all care about you, your goals, and your health. I love the team that they assembled I think I will be coming here a long time because I have so much fun doing hard work and the results I have seen are absolutely amazing. Pound-for-pound I am probably the strongest I have ever been in my life and that's pretty crazy because I was pretty fit in the Marine Corps. You can't go wrong at this gym but I will say things are not easy. You have to put in the work. You have to be focused. You have to work on things that coaches to tell you to do. You have to like the feeling of sweat dripping all over the place. Thank you Ape Arena and all the coaches. You know who you are. You guys are amazing people.
