It's a man's place. Model fighter planes hanging from the ceilings. That easy barber banter you see in movies. These place exudes that easy demeanor. It shines in details: particularly finishing the edges with a straight razor. It's a bit pricier than the generic supercuts, but the attention, detail, and skill makes the $20 (tip included) far more worth it than saving ten bucks, especially knowing you don't have to fear a bad cut. This place will give you a classic men's cut- if you want something fancier, it's not the place. I've been a patron of Alan's for over 13 years. Moved to Shaw/Maroa area about a year ago, just too far to my former barber in the Tower District. Tried the Supercuts-type shops & searched for a real barber for years but never got the full service haircut like Townsmen's in 20+ yrs! I read the one star review below but tried the walk-in anyway and was pleasantly surprised! There are two appt only chairs and I had to wait about 15 min for Allen (the walk-in barber) but it was well worth the wait and the time flew by remembering all the planes. Everything Kelly H. described is spot-on accurate. Friendly "old guys" greeted me while I was admiring the model airplanes. They talked about flying/fixing airplanes, Marine Corps/military, playing music & buying/fixing guitars... and that's just while I was there. They are 24kt barbers and exactly what 'I've been looking for all these years. Be advised: I think he's Allen, behind the walk-in chair, and I imagine he takes a lunch every day. read more

I just moved into the area and I was looking for a new barber. The place I used to go to was very classic (straight razor along your sideburns and neck) and I wasn't willing to go back to Super Cuts. The guys here were really nice and they were able to get me an appointment the day of (they do both appointments and walk-ins). Had my first cut here today. Great place. I would second all of the other reviews...it's a man's place....evokes my early memories of going to the barber with my grandmother. Nice to be able to go in and say, "basic men's cut, I usually part it here", and they know what you're talking about, and it's done right. One guy does appointments, and one guy does walk-ins. And there is another guy that is by appointment at particular times of the day or week. So call and make an appointment, or just walk in. Check this place out if you need a cut. It's legit. I planned ahead and figured they only accept cash or check, no credit cards. Pulled the handle on the old fashioned mechanical cash register and everything. I'll be back. (One other note: unfortunately they do not offer shaves, but until the health code allows them to use a real stropped straight razor, I understand why they don't. However, with a standard cut they do edge, and shave the neck with a straight razor and hot foam.) read more

I had a great shop in Valencia (Apollo) but it's kinda out of the way. Yelped and found Allen at Townsmen BS. Been coming here for months now. Called first to make an appoinment with Allen. Walk-ins are cool too. Wait your turn there... 3 guys doing it right. One old TV and no frills, no lotions, no gel, no racks of product to push, and most importantly, no complaints. My first experience with Townsmen Barber Shop was probably around 5 years ago, and I've been a loyal customer since that first visit. This is the real deal... These are barbers, not stylists. While a stylist may learn a small bit of the trade during their school, these men are specialists who have had much more training in barbering and are dedicated to the trade. If you were to have your hair cut at a salon, you'd notice that the staff rotates all of the time, as the salon business tends to be transient and stylists floating from place to place as they find cheaper rent. Again, Townsmen is the real deal. Allen cuts my hair every time. They take the time to learn about their clientele and make sure that their needs are met. read more

Haircuts are $16. Pricey, yes. Old fashioned "man-cut", hell yes. Jared is right in saying that this place is a man's place. I was in here with my old man and the atmosphere was just perfect. There is so much military memorabilia here, which made him feel welcomed (24 year US Navy vet). The barbers are entertaining and have great customer service; the engaging conversations and great cuts really define Townsmen. They told me they don't use clippers, but I read some reviews on here saying they do. I'll find out next time. All this place needs now is some music and a box of cigars. read more

I have been coming here for 2 years. I always get an appointment with Allen. I always leave satisfied with my hair cut and beard trim. Very professional and friendly. Word to the wise they are 100% appointment based now. So call ahead to make an appointment. From my experience, if you call early enough you can get in the same day. Later in the day, they might be booked but its worth the wait. Also wanted to add at the time of this post they accept credit cards using the Square magstripe reader. read more

It took a lot of soul searching to find a barber shop that was right for me. $16 may seem a bit high for a haircut but you get great conversation and in the few years I've been going to these guys my hair has never been messed up once. Great cuts, company, and environment. Parking is easy to deal with. Just to make this review even better, I went to Bill for my first haircut at the shop and told him I was taking a girl out on a date. He spent a lot longer on me getting my hair perfect since they weren't busy. Same thing when I told him I was meeting her mom. Exact same thing on the day I asked her to marry me. Bill, you don't know that last part but you were definitely one of the key people in helping me find my wife. I don't know what I'd do if these guys closed the shop. read more

Came here for the 1st time today after reading reviews on Yelp. I scheduled an appointment for the 1st time not going to another barber since the move to Fresno. I went in for a regular men's cut and it came out looking great. I got home and thought I'd go a little shorter to make it last bit longer for my sister's wedding at the end of the month...so, I came back the same day and no prob whatsoever. These guys stand by their word that you can come back within 3 days if you need any changes done to your cut. Now it looks perfect and I'm looking forward to walking my sister down the isle! Friendly customer service. As other reviews have said, these guys are real barbers, not salon stylists. They got real quality heavy duty clippers for fades, tapers, you name it. They also use straight edge for lining and defining. Once your done, you get a nice cleanup, they vacuum your head and brush your loose hairs off unlike the rest of the competition. Great shop! I was in Fresno for about a week visiting and needed a haircut. I normally go to a barber back home, so I looked for one nearby. Of course Townsmen pops up right away on Yelp. With the best and most reviews, I had to check it out. It's very conveniently located off of Shaw, about 3 blocks from Fresno State. There are 3 chairs, and plenty of antique military memorabilia to keep you occupied while you wait. Richard and Allen take haircuts by appointment only, so be sure to call ahead if you want their services. However, Bill does all the walk-in appointments. They keep a nice clean shop and a friendly chatter you would expect to here in any old fashion barber shop. As far as the actually haircut, they are very detailed and efficient! They finish off all their cuts with a straight-razor shave around the sideburns and down the back of the neck! Top you off with a little aftershave and vacuum up the loose hairs off your head and send you on your way. All for $16, without tip, and you walk out with a detailed haircut to your liking, clean shaven around the edges, and a few laughs to pass the time. read more
