We arrived at 8:20pm. One hour and 40 minutes should be long enough to get in before 10, we figured, and we would thus avoid the extra 50kr fee that is tacked on later in the evening. Two hours later there were still more than a hundred people in front of us. We started joking about taking a shot each time someone said optimistically, "We're so close!" Of course, we didn't have any alcohol - a rookie mistake. Those who have languished in this line before know that you should bring snacks and booze. We had neither. Then the rain began to fall. Only one in 200 people had an umbrella, it seemed - and the closest one was too far too shelter us, but close enough to poke me in the eye and make plump drops drizzle directly onto my head. "It will be worth it," we mumbled, glaring at each person who tried to butt into the line with a little more bitterness each time. We got in at midnight. It seemed like a miracle. We paid the 185kr fee and dashed in under the bridge, splashing through puddles. How on earth could it be worth it? Who waits in line for 3 entire hours to pay 200kr and not even get a drink? I have no idea. But it was. That's the magical thing about Trädgården. Even now, I can't explain how it was worth it. But it was. My friend and I attended the closing night, thinking we had to be there for one last hurrah, as it was the last chance and neither of us had made it there earlier during the summer. We had three hours in line and three hours in the club, and while the line dragged on, the hours inside flew by. The music is decent - there are multiple dancefloors with distinct sounds and flavours. The hamburgers are remarkably tasty, though overpriced. Even a glass of wine can make a hipster's wallet burn a bit. The toilets resemble a campsite. The bar staff have a nonchalance bordering on rudeness. And yet, it's awesome. It's something about the quirky decorations and the smiles on every single face. People always have a good time here. You get in the door, feeling oh-so-annoyed over the line, and yet your worries wash away. The atmosphere is unbeatable - you'll never find so many people having such a good time, casually but earnestly, rain or shine. It's still a mystery to me what exactly makes Trädgården keep pulling me back. But I don't mind.

The Swedes have a feeling of natural, open confidence & assertiveness that seems less pronounced in the other Scandinavian countries possibly because Sweden retained its militaristic spirit up until very modern times. Like in Berlin which also gives off a confidence that is so important for making a hot scene, the milieu at SLM exudes a very playful, experimental willingness to have a good time. It is also a very international scene with many players especially from all over Europe & North America. The first time I went was in the summer of 1993 where I went down a staircase and was met & welcomed by a young moustached member of SLM in a Swedish Navy officer's uniform. The entrance fee was nominal, & there is a bar where you can get good Swedish beer so you can cruise the bar w/ a beer in hand and check out the scene. There are plenty of different spaces to play in for those w/ different fetishes & inclinations. And you don't necessarily have to speak Swedish to join in. Sometimes body language, the look in the eyes, & wearing leder or a police uni speak louder than anything being said eloquently in any language. In 2002 I went down the same set of stairs, but found they had changed the set up enough that I couldn't relate to the way it was before. I suppose SLM changes the interior to keep the site from becoming too familiar & boring. However, the same friendly openness was still in force. I encountered two men from New York City, a bearded Sir & his bearded boy where 3 Americans met respectively 6,000 & 3,000 away from home. Later we accidently met at Drottningholm Royal Swedish Palace, which had a theater much like in the spirit of Teatro Olympico by the classical Renaissance architect, Andrea Palladio, in Vicenza, Italia, so the stars seemed aligned to our meeting. Nothing but good memories of Stockholm from visiting the Swedish Royal Palace, Kunliga Slottet & old town on Gamlastan Island just to the north of SLM. There is sophisticated culture of all different levels, but the happenings at SLM for me were the fondest to remember on my visit to Sverige. I want to thank the volunteer members of SLM who have really set up a great, welcoming space for all who come here. Skål! 5 Yelp stars for exceptional, warm hospitality.

Being a leather and fetish bar it requires dress code by the patrons. For women and straight people interested in BDSM and fetish there are other clubs and bars available. A 12-month membership is 400 SEK, a trial for a month 150 SEK, while a single entry for non-members is 50 SEK. A couple of times SLM hosts open houses where non-members are welcome as well, e.g. around World AIDS Day and during Stockholm Pride. The bar is located in a basement of a house and one has to ring the door to be let in. Wardrobe, bar - everything is run by members. Kudos to them for helping others to enjoy themselves. To some a visit to a BDSM/leather/fetish bar may be perceived a scary and frightening but I have to say that this is one of the friendliest gay places I know in this city. Yes, there is a tough and cruisy attitude but also the possibility to actually talk with someone. I am not a member myself but I am always very delighted when I have gone during the open houses.

The bar is small, unassuming and finds itself on a street filled with conspicuous, Italian restaurants hosting happy hours for corporate Swedes. The bar is a standout for the drinks, the trademark Swedish charisma and genuine warmth. As a side, shout out to Sweden for having the nicest, most welcoming people in the world. We were given a standing table when we got in, but quickly moved to a couple of seats by the bar. We were one of 8 couples at the bar, so yes, very date night vibes. For our first round of drinks, we got the Easy Martini and Let them Eat Cake. The latter was too sweet for our liking but the Easy Martini had the perfect amount of sweet and tart. Our second round was the winner with the Girl Dinner and their Old Fashioned. The Girl dinner was crafted to perfection and possibly the best version of a martini we've ever had. The old fashioned too, made with WhistlePig 10 years was fantastic. The service cannot be faulted, we profusely thanked the lovely bartender, vowing to crow about it to whoever cares to listen and to be back when we are in Stockholm next.
