I'm a big animal lover and whenever I'm in a new city for a few days I typically gravitate to at least one zoo or aquarium. My oldest son wanted to check out an aviary this time instead and the rest of the family agreed...It was a great decision. Tracy Aviary is located within Liberty Park next to downtown Salt Lake City. We walked through the visitor center and paid the entry fee and then we were off. We checkout the easy-to-read map of the park and there were many more exhibits and areas to explore than I expected. As we headed towards our first destination, owl forest, a vulture and its handler walked right by us like we were neighbors. We spent about 90mins here until early sunset checking out all the exhibits and birds they had to offer. Many of the cages were quite open an conducive to actually seeing the birds. One main issue I've had with aviaries in the past is the birds are always hiding in the foliage or in the corner of their enclosure. Here, it was like the employees asked the birds to strut by us on a catwalk so an amazing view. I really enjoyed the South American bird pavilion, the enormous pelicans in the pond, the rainforest habitat and more. It also helped the weather was perfect...slight warmth from the sun but a cool breeze to keep me from sweating. On our way out at closing time, I learned this is the oldest aviary in the US and it was home to 400+ birds and over 120 species. We all had a great time and would come back here again to spend more time. read more

We visited Tracy Aviary with our toddler during a short trip to SLC and absolutely loved it! If you're visiting on a Saturday, do not miss the 11:00 AM bird show. It was the highlight of our trip--super fun, educational, and we got to see so many birds up close. The grounds are well-organized with sections for everything from majestic eagles and owls to vibrant flamingos. I'd recommend budgeting at least 2 hours to see everything without rushing. We also appreciated the extra amenities; the small cafe, park area, and visitor center really rounded out the morning. It's a perfect, low-stress destination for families! read more

I really enjoyed seeing all the different types of birds at the Tracy Aviary. My top faves were the toucan, multicolored parrots, peacock, flamingos, and the swans. They have guided maps available and it was quite easy for me to maneuver through the aviary. I went late in the afternoon, so had missed the bird shows that happen in the mornings. Parking was easy and there were plenty of spots available. Very nice attraction within Liberty Park. read more

Beautiful, beautiful space. I came here for an event a week ago and I cannot stop raving about everything. We walked through the grounds the day before our event and marveled at how many beautiful birds there were and how extensive their enclosures were. The staff is so attentive and really care about their animals. And the day of our event went so smoothly! It's the perfect space to rent out for an event or just to walk around for the day. 10/10 aviary and event space! And PS: they have baby flamingoes right now!! read more

Wow - how often does one find an aviary with 16 different areas to see that's on 9 acres! Most are just a couple of buildings. Well... I know why... See, this was originally the Salt Lake City Zoo, that's how. The aviary is kid-friendly with activities, a sand play area, and things to climb. We've been a handful of times to the aviary now, and once to an event happening just outside the grounds. We absolutely adore it. It's great as a date, as an activity to take out-of-town visitors, or even as a solo walk for inspiration. Pricing is super fair, $15 for adults or $5 after 5PM during summer. It's located in Liberty park, which also has a bunch of stuff going on during summer. The aviary itself has a variety of beautiful birds - from owls to ones that genuinely look like dinosaurs. Several I've never seen before, and I grew up going to zoos. They seem to take care of the birds well, enrichment present and well-sized enclosures. Volunteers are knowledgeable (one was speaking about one species and answering questions in front of their enclosure). There's also a café on site that serves coffee (and dole whips???). They do programming too - I want to come back for one of the birdwatching tours. Can't recommend this space and place enough. read more

Parking lot is on the north side of the aviary where the entrance is tucked away. The entrance was through the gift shop when I went. Lots of enclosures to see. No need to rush. I brought one water bottle in with me. It was permitted when I went. I recommend going early in the morning when they open. The bird show is early in the morning. It's cooler outside then and the birds love mornings. There is a South American enclosure that has the humidity cranked up for the birds. It's a great exhibit but it does feel nice to leave after seeing the birds. The Black Vultures named "Vader and Chewie" after the Star Wars movies were in their enclosure with the Crowned Cranes and Roseate Spoonbills. Vader was doing his Darth Vader impression where he sticks his wings out at the back of the enclosure on a perch. Watch the video I uploaded to see for yourself. A cute Ruddy Duck was in an enclosure with a boardwalk taking a bath dipping in the water to clean its feathers. Again, see the video. The aviary is located in the enormous Liberty Park public park. 700 East and 500 East streets are on either side of the park running north and south. The only way into the park with a vehicle is on the north side or south side. If you are going to the Tracy Aviary, you must enter on the NORTH SIDE of the park. It's kind of tricky and traffic moves counterclockwise IN THE PARK. Lots of people exercise at Liberty Park daily. There are some wild birds that spend time at the park. If you want to see even more birds, walk around the park's outer edge for exercise if you want. Parking spaces are located all around the edge of the park though they fill up daily. read more

Really cool place to come if you are interested in birds! The location is really nice and there are many areas to walk around and check out. The birds themselves are super cool - I loved seeing the owls and macaws but all of the birds were cool in their own way. Admission was reasonable and staff we encountered were friendly. We were able to see the outdoor bird show which was cool and only about 30 minutes so you had plenty of time to continue exploring on your own. They also offer additional paid experiences if you'd like to get up close and personal with certain birds. Worth checking out! read more

What a cool spot! If you're into birds or wildlife, or even if you aren't, Tracy Aviary is a fantastic spot to explore. Perhaps the only negative was that the staff weren't very friendly or helpful, but they provide maps so that's not a huge problem. Some things are currently closed due to avian flu, but there was still a lot to scope out. Lots of birds, some indoor areas, and even some atriums to walk through. The place seems pretty well maintained, and it was very cool to see so many different birds. It was worth the money, and entertained us for about an hour. read more

This place is incredible. It is a small zoo but they have so many cool species! The enclosures are the proper size and set up to where you can see multiple angles up close. My boyfriend took me here to a surprise aviary light show. The employees transformed the aviary into a holiday lights spectacle! It was magical! Okay, how did I not know how cool this place was! I've lived in Salt lake for about 5 years now and this entire time I'd been under the impression that Tracy aviary was like, a building with birds in it at the park. Lo and behold, it's a full on zoo! You may think "what's exciting about a zoo with only birds" and thought the same thing, but the sheer variety of birds they have was impressive. I saw so many birds, big and small, and I'd never even heard of. It was more than entertaining for everyone in my party, including my 3 year old. In particular for the toddler, they have a handful of unique play areas spread throughout the park to keep kids entertained and give parents a chance to sit down. There is also a cafe where they sell food and dole whip. They also apparently have a handful of shows that you can attend at no additional cost, though I didn't get a chance to attend this time around. Overall, I will 100% be coming back soon and I highly recommend that you come check it out too read more

Friends brought myself and my ten month old here while in town for a long weekend, they got married here which was an adorable unique venue and they enjoyed their big day for a small wedding! Unfortunately when we came it was a cold rainy day and there weren't too many spots to hang dry but the perk was it wasn't that crowded! We walked around a bit in between rain showers and my daughter was elated to see the flamingos. We tried to hang tight pushing her nap time for the bird show and they cancelled it last minute and there were a bunch of folks waiting in the rain, but they did bring out baby storks into a small auditorium and the birdkeepers were very knowledgeable answering questions on the baby birds. Surrounded by trees in a quiet part of SLC guests should plan to spend approximately two hours roaming the grounds in order to see everything. Recommended by our daughter's teacher when she heard we were taking a vacay in Salt Lake City! The birds were well cared for, the exhibits were clean. Restroom facilities are convenient and heated ( just in case you go in the dead of winter like us ). Due to the time of year, there were maybe 7-10 other guests we glimpsed. I was so excited to come here! I love animals and always so fascinated by birds. while visiting my bff in SLC we came here and walked around. I loved the walk, the cafe and the little store in front. The service team was friendly and provided great service. We mostly were excited to see the owls and the vultures. The owls were so amazing but due to a wedding we couldnt see the vultures(which is why this is 4 stars vs. 4) I hope to come back to see everything once the bird flu is undercontrol and no special events. Being an avid birder, I just had to check this place out and I was not disappointed!! In fact, I spent about twice as long here as I anticipated! Even my son loved it and he usually rolls his eyes when I start talking about birds lol! The grounds are a lot more expansive than I expected! It's a huge complex with many different sections and "houses" that allow you to walk around inside! One of my faves was the rainforest habitat - there were so many colorful and loquacious birds flitting around in the trees surrounding us! They even had an owl hooting away behind a bamboo screen and he was eating a poor little mouse! Peacocks actively roam around the grounds openly and let you get pretty close for some great pics. They had tons of waterfowl and the Flamingos were putting on an incredible show - dancing around and almost seeming to fight and chase each other! I was so surprised at all the activity given that it was a chilly winter morning - Fabulous day! It's very easy to find - located inside lovely Liberty Park. We parked on the outer ring that encircles the park but there seems to be another parking lot closer to the entrance so just keep an eye out for that turn-in. The prices are very reasonable given the quality of the attractions. They have a cute little gift shop inside as well. The grounds have seating areas and nice sidewalks with maps placed very frequently so you can find your way and be sure not to miss anything. There were several closed areas - one small area closed off bc a tree had fallen and pulled up a bunch of the sidewalk due to a recent windstorm. Shame bc it looked like such a nice area - but you could still see the birdies inside. The "theater" where they hold demonstrations and such is also closed - we could see there were some interesting birdy specimens inside but couldn't get to them so that was a bummer but that just means we'll have to go back! read more

This place is situated in an amazing park with lots of old trees. It is a true gem. It has nine different areas of birds and they are all well cared for and easy to watch for a long time. My kids and I had a blast feeding the lorikeets. This experience is an extra- $4-5 depending on if you're a member or not. There are certain times you can go during the morning and afternoon to feed the birds. The food you receive is a syrupy substance in a cup. The birds are friendly and hungry. One of the best things I did on my three-day trip to SLC. I visited on a Monday in the early afternoon and was amazed at how big the space was. There were indoor and outdoor enclosures, informational pieces at each spot, and a handful of interactive spots. There were plenty of photo ops and all of the birds looked happy. There were birds from all around the world. They were colorful and different. Signs were posted to tell about the birds. Benches to sit on were along the concrete path. I spent a Friday afternoon here with a friend and we both had a blast! The variety of birds they have is amazing. From ducks to flamingos, a bald eagle, and a hawk to warmer climate birds. Some of my favorites were the singing birds(forget their name) and the live falcon exhibit/Q&A. The parrots were also super friendly and social. This is definitely a family friendly place and the workers were so patient with answering questions! My friend and I were cracking up when one little girl asked the presenter if a female bird was a "boy or girl." Definitely don't hesitate to come here on a nice, warm day as most of the exhibits are outdoors. The gift shop also has some fun stuffed animals and a stuffed parrot that will record and repeat what you say back to you. read more

Bookmarked this spot for a visit before seeing that their facility is under construction- thankfully that only meant a small area at the front, so our visit wasn't really affected. Great spot to go when the weather is nice, with or without kids. Layout divides the birds up by their geographic area, with Andy the Condor up front and center by the entrance. We could usually find most of the birds listed in the enclosures and the plaques were easy to read. Some areas were more kid-friendly with interactive displays. I also really liked that many areas also had plant identification cards in addition to those for the birds- the grounds are well maintained and the residents appear to be well cared for. Only saw a few employees during our visit, admissions staff were friendly. There is a cafe on site for small bites, and various areas where you can purchase bird food or add-on behind the scenes experiences. What a find... this is perfect for a nice little afternoon adventure. My initial thought was .. meh birds, how good can this be? But it is actually quite interesting to see the various types of birds throughout the aviary. The exhibits mimic their habitats and there are a few very large installations housing a variety of birds that tend to co-exist in the same natural habitats. I didn't realize how many different species of birds exist and how monumentally different they can be from one another. My favorites being the Pelicans and also the Flamingos. Besides the obvious bird watching and education, this aviary also offers a beautiful setting. This is perfect for taking a nice little stroll. It is big enough to be interesting, yet small enough that kids can make it through here without tiring of the attractions. Great for kids and adults, a true family gem. read more

It was $12 to get in with the coupon on Yelp, and definitely worth it. I was expecting a small bird sanctuary but they had it all. The aviary is a great place for bird enthusiasts and people looking for something unique to do. My favorite part was the different walk through enclosures that housed waterfowl, shorebirds and passerines. This easily was one of the best animal sanctuaries I have been to and would 100% go again. Only constructive criticism I have is that I don't think the nocturnal owl zone is the best spot for a playground. Many signs were hung up asking visitors to be quiet around the owls, yet there was a playground with screaming kids right next to the enclosures. Overall, the Tracy Aviary is a must visit! read more
