This Trader Joe's is located in the La Jolla Village square. Tucked towards the back, it's a little tricky navigating the parking lot to park. I happened to stop by this location since I was in the area and was able to snag the primary color mini bags, and they had plenty! They also had the large green canvas bags too! I happened to ask if they were getting the teal insulated bags and they had those too! Separated from the mini bags, the insulated bags were in a giant pile of their very own! Yay! I really like going to this Trader Joe's when I'm on my way home from Pacific Beach or Mission Bay. I wish it was closer because I would go to this one all the time. This store is great, it's bigger than the other ones in the area and the parking lot is far superior. The spots are actually reasonably sized and it's a large parking lot. It seems like everybody in the store is super efficient too. It's a Sunday afternoon and typically when I go to the Trader Joe's that's closer to me. It's a disaster with lines wrapping all the way through the store, but this one is moving. I mean, if you look past the parking lot of craziness, then you'll actually find some great food items at Trader Joe's. I always get their snacks and chocolates and frozen goods because they just make it different as compared to a big box shop. What Trader Joe's lacks in size they get in hospitality and friendliness of the workers. Overall, you have to understand. It's a different vibe when you go into a Trader Joe's. You'll find unique things that make you wanna try new recipes and new chocolate covered cashews or that new Trader Joe's bag you've always been looking for. This one in the La Jolla Plaza next to Ucsd is always packed with student students and you have the local restaurants nearby so it's always gonna be busy but my advice is don't go on a Sunday. read more

I love this location. It seems bigger compared to the others in SD. The shelves are always stocked and they had everything that I came there for. As always, Trader Joe's employees are very friendly. The prices are always the best. On my trip, some of the things I bought was the marinated shawarma chicken, garlic nan, and garlic tzatziki sauce, which tasted really good and all for less than $20. I wish there was one in Hawaii, but luckily I brought back enough things to share with family and friends. read more

I have received the WORST customer service from this place and their employees. Having worked in customer service for the last 10+ years its a shame seeing full grown adults treat people this way. I have dropped by the store 2 times and called more times after that to ask for a receipt for a purchase I made to provide as proof for my job, and the employees have had me running in circles trying to get this done. Sean, Michael, and Teyah (if that was even her real bame) have all lied about a certain "book keeper" needing to get that receipt for me. They "searched" in their system but for "some reason" they cannot find the receipt. Then they want to forward me to their accounting!! Meanwhile, when Teyah was being rude on the phone with me and I asked for Michael again, she responded with "He's on lunch". At fucking 9 am???? Very disrespectful employees and HORRIBLE customer service. As a manager, the manager of this place is CLEARLY not doing their job right because to be treated this way when it is important for me to get that receipt is terrible. I will be reaching out to the higher ups of this place and will make sure all of these employees are held accountable. It is gross to see other people in the same industry doing their jobs so horribly when you know how easy it can be to treat people with better customer service. My first visits to California bring to mind my introduction to this Cali staple, Trader Joe's, or "TJ's" as the locals call it. Every TJ's is a testament to the store brand that brings-to-mind a humble Hawaii'an traveller, bringing international fare into port. Wood panelling, flashy two-tone Hawaii'an shirts, fares of every type and flavor, across the seven seas, from the Americas to the Orient, and in times past, a coffee and healthful sample section at the back of the store, define this brand. I've never had a TJ's treat that has not challenged and satisfied my taste buds. Whether it be a Margherita wood-stove artisan-crafted $8 pizza from Italy, Orange Chicken in a savoury, spiced sauce from the Orient or an Acaii bowl complete with individually-packed coconut and slivered almonds, fresh from the Amazon in Brazil, TJ's never disappoints. Pricing is reasonable. Bananas are typically priced cheaper here than any neighbouring supermarket. The dishes, which you can stack-up in your freezer for ready-to-go-gourmet, pack a punch, without breaking bank. Oh, and did I mention TJ's does desserts too!? Their Mochi icecream is a star (thaw for a beat before tasting this treat, to give the icecream a chance to soften :) ). New to Trader Joe's and after my experience here, I'm definitely going to be a regular. The staff here are SO nice. I couldn't find the Soyaki sauce, and once I asked a staff member, he stopped what he was doing to bring me to where the sauce was! Also, Emily, the staff member who checked my groceries out, gave me a free lollipop after I told her it was my first time shopping here. The food is healthy and tastes great! I called to place some items on hold and set up a pick up time. My previous commitments went longer than usual, so I called the store and let them know. They were so kind and said no worries and to just come when I can. When I showed up to pick up my saved items, I briefly mentioned how I had such a long day and it was not the best. I went to do my shopping and as I finished the lady came and brought me some beautiful flowers and said hope it makes my day better. This is why I love coming to Trader Joe's. Huge lines during the pandemic but that is perfectly fine bc they actually care about our safety and enforce social distancing! I would not recommend for you to come if you aren't willing to wait in line for ~20 minutes to get in. When I went 1/4/21, it was kinda cold..and I forgot to wear enough so i was a little underprepared for the wait, Onto the goods: really liked their organic avocados! $3 for 4 fairly sized ones were soooo delicious, teamed with their European style whole wheat bread was MUAHHHHH!!! This is my favorite supermarket and my favorite TJs San Diego location. The staff are always super friendly and helpful, the store is bigger and less claustrophobic than other TJs locations, and the store layout is logical making it easy to find what you need. This location has great live plants and cut flowers and they always go the extra yard to make the shopping experience for my 6 year old daughter fun. They hide a stuffed seal named Seymour and if a child finds it they can get a lollipop (if their parents are ok with it) and they always give children stickers at check out. Overall this Trader Joe's has lots of fresh fruit and vegetable, meat and fresh fish, delicious frozen meals, wine and beer and lots of seasonal and signature products all at a great price. read more

Since this became Review of the Day, it's time to update! As of 9/1/2020, these are the following hours and restrictions at the store: Hours: 9:00 am - 9:00 pm Only 40 shoppers allowed in the store. This is carefully monitored by TJ staff at both doors. The line around the outside can get long (especially with everyone spaced out 6') but it moves quickly. On warm days, the staff are nice enough to hand out free water bottles too. I have to say - this was one of the best organized and stocked stores even through the worst of Covid shortages. Carts and baskets are sanitized between customers. Staff wear masks and gloves. Creatively, product logos from boxes have been taped to the floor to mark 6' spacing for checkout. Only 1 aisle in the store has been marked one-way. Unlike other grocery stores where no one pays attention to aisle directions, staff are stationed at each end of the aisle to enforce one-way entry. The staff here all are always so nice. They make recommendations on purchases, commenting on favorites or making recipe recommendations. With so many great products and a clean and safe store, this is definitely our favorite place to shop. read more

Today, I wanted to share a disheartening experience I had with Trader Joe's, a place I frequently shop at. After a sample tasting of some delicious red seedless grapes, I purchased a pack, only to discover upon returning home that many were moldy, squishy, and far from the quality I was led to believe in the store. Considering that we, as UCSD students, have to walk and take a bus to get to the store, it was not just a simple trip to return them. We went to 8657 Villa La Jolla Dr. at around 20:20. I was met with a rather indifferent response at the customer service desk, lacking any form of apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience caused. The difference between the sample and the product sold to us was stark, leaving me to wonder about the integrity of the practice. For a store I held in high regard, this experience was disheartening, not just for the product quality but also for the lack of empathy for the time and effort it took us to rectify what was their mistake. I love shopping at Trader Joe's because they have some pretty unique items you can't find anywhere. I love coming here for snacks and random food item. They have seasonal products and new items all the time. During this covid-19 pandemic, they are doing their best to keep us safe. Upon entering, there is a line outside the door so the store is not over crowded. There's also an employee wiping down carts with hand sanitizer. It's also required to wear a mask to enter the store. Temporary, we can NOT bring in our own reusable bags. So in the mean time they are giving our paper bags for no charge. read more

Trader Joe's is my go to specially now that I take classes at club Pilates in the same complex. I think the store is bigger than Mira Mesa location. I am always picking up salads, cheeses and condiments here. I am Indian and have to give them 5 stars for their frozen samosas. Very authentic! I agree with what some other people have said about this specific location. 1. I love TJs in general but this location just never seems to have seasonal items that I see everywhere else. If you're a TJs fan, you know there's a ton of IG pages that features all the new/seasonal items that TJs release. I bookmark things I want, walk in at the end of the week, do a few rotations and end up leaving sad because they never stock up on it. And I have to see all my friends rave about the new items. Bummer. 2. I know very well that I should not feel entitled to receive good samples, or any samples at all. But truthfully, what also makes TJs amazing are the great samples they have for customers. Using their own packaged foods to come up with clever, delicious recipes that they share with you is such a great idea. Whenever I go to other locations like Carmel Mountain, Carmel Valley or Mira Mesa, they always have recipe samples that wows me. It's a marketing tactic that I love and works 100% on me because most of the time I end up getting the entire ingredients list from their sample and end up making my own at home. But here, I always get a piece of cheese or a mini cookie. Not creative at all. And the workers who give out samples don't even respond to you when you say thank you. 3. The produce isn't the freshest here. I made the mistake of grabbing a bag of nuts and a couple fruits before. The nuts were expired by a few months when I tried them at home and they didn't taste right. My lemon looked fine on the inside but inside was rotting a little bit. Same with my avocados. 4. It's also not the cleanest location. The floors always look dirty and the pantries/fruit display areas seem dusty. It doesn't really make you want to buy the food, which makes it sit there for longer and it's a vicious cycle of unappetizing display - less people drawn to the food - food gets old. Also, not something this TJs can do about, but the parking structure is terrible here with lots of traffic. Unless you want to walk out disappointed like me every week without them new-new-IG-hyped-item you're obsessed with trying, go to another TJs and save yourself a few tears. read more
