I LOVE the variety as well as the prices. One thing that stood out most ro me is that the store is SO clean and neat! The variety of items iis huge and aisles are nice and wide to allow buggies to pass each other easily. The seafood section is normally the first thing you can smell, but not here. I didn't notice it until I reached that section. That said, it wasn't overwhelming, as other stores are. The young man behind the counter was kind enough to give me a thick bag of ice to keep my selections cold until I got home. Now that's service! Luckily we arrived as Southern Sea Dragon and Lion Dance was setting up in front of 99 Ranch. They started their dance and the lion ate lettuce and spit it back out to give everyone prosperity. The dance moved inside through the store and ended up at the food court. They visited each eatery and were given lucky money in the red envelopes. Great Dragon and Lion dance! Normally I visit 99 Ranch for the great selection of fruit, vegetables, and other groceries like mooncakes. In the future I'll have to visit for the awesome Dragon and Lion dance. read more

First time here and the selection is bigger than I thought. Found a lot of items I needed in order to complete a ton of meals I've bookedmark. Might even prefer this store over H-Mart for my Asian inspired dishes. Came on a Sunday around 1pm, a prime time to do shopping and it wasn't busy at all. The shelves are flowing with items so there's a lot to look at and if you're unfamiliar like I was, it might take you a solid 90 minutes to just browse and look at what they have to offer. Super well lit and above average clean (no boxes laying around, products were more or less were in their sections etc). The layout made sense sorta. With a few more visits, I'll really get the hang of it. Didn't interact with any employees other than at checkout. Nothing special there. The bakery smelled great and there are food courts on either end of the store so don't be surprised if you overspend with the amount of goodies available. read more

This grocery store is within walking distance to our place. I love the concept of a grocery store with different foodie restaurants inside for convenience. One stop shop!! Like all grocery stores, they offer produce, meats/seafood, dairy, sweets, breads, coffees/teas and such. This is an Asian grocery store so they offer lots of unique options that others don't have. For example, most people do not like the stinky fruit called Durian. I happened to LOVE it!! Overall, it's a nice clean store. Ample shared parking lot. Customer service is a hit and miss. This review is for their combo meal food service only, which is located on the left side of the store. I really wanted to get a two or three item combo to-go but their food did not look appealing. The rice noodles were burnt and the shrimp were overcooked, probably from sitting on low heat all-day long. The chow fun and orange chicken looked better but I was already suspicious. I wanted to ask questions but no one behind the counter paid me any attention. They had boxed meals in front of the counter and I almost bought one but it was dripping wet, probably from sweating under the heat lamp all day. I've thought good things about this bakery. Until I tried these cream puffs they sell. They come in a pack of two priced at $4.99. The ingredient label indicates they are filled with Bavarian cream. Heck yeah! Look inside. There's no Bavarian cream. They are filled with fake whipped topping that other grocery store bakeries use. The choux pastry is dry and hard too. NOT worth the price. Bad service! we are the regular customers. We purchased the food $100-$200 each week. There was an old chinese woman who giving the ramen samples today 02/03/2024 in the morning located between the register and the produce. If the manager of the business is reading, you are better fire this woman. She was very rude and aggressive. I asked for a small cup of sample, she made a face and shake her head. I thought she was joking or something but when my husband went there for the sample , she did the same thing. What the heck wrong with you!! No service mind. No manner. My first time out of the house, grocery shopping since March 2020 has been a fabulous experience. Even all of us wearing masks, there's such an inviting and friendly vibe from everyone. It wasn't crowded at all and they were in full stock of everything ! The vegetables looked great and so did the fruit. They had an abundance of different fruit. The Taiwanese cabbage was massive, I had no clue it was so large! They have a bakery section as well, I can highly recommend their taro bread! Just how I remember it as a child, light and fluffy bread with the hints of taro swirled into it. They also have turnip cake available to order straight off the heated bar (sorry I'm blanking in its actual name!). The turnip cake was sliced largely and tasted incredible. They even have LEE's Coffee! (In the freezer section) - Thai Tea, regular, and vanilla was available. Sold as singles. My cart was packed from top to bottom and overflowing but the worker didn't seem phased by it nor stressed. That's good! Usually you'll get a sigh from the workers at other markets, it was quite relaxed here. We weren't rushed at all because there were 3 other lanes open. I had made a list before hand and they had everything plus more! They have pallets of neatly organized cases of pretty fruit. Meat section has a wide variety of all proteins, chicken tips, wings, feet, pork belly - ground and numerous beef cuts. Fish market plenty variety had Dungeness crab and wild caught lobsters for a steal! Aisles are wider with room to pass. Food court is adjacent to store with many fast food options. Bakery is filled with goodies from cakes, breads, rolls. I think I will be coming here now! read more

I really like this location since it has a large parking lot. The fact that it's not crowded is a big plus. It has been opened for awhile, but coming here during the pandemic reminds me that this location is worth the extra 5 mins drive for me. I haven't yet had to stand in a long line. It could be my luck or it could be that I have always came on an off-time. They pretty much have everything the other location does, but the aisles here seems a bit roomier. I didn't take a picture but yesterday we got a few hot pot items. I have always bought my sliced meat from 99 Ranch. Some meat however is frozen so be aware to give you some thaw time. If you're in a rush and don't want to make your own broth they sell hot pot broth. Favorite is the Little Sheep Hot Pot Soup Base. They have the spicy version as well. The snack aisle is another favorite. I did take a picture of the snacks I bought on another run to the market. This was specific for accompanying some beer drinking. Place I go to for all my Chinese recipes. What more can you ask for? Big location, plenty of parking, and it's not crowded. read more

There are a ton of great choices for consumers at this Asian market. We were here anyway, at the Food Court next door, getting a bite to eat at Krispy Krunchy Chicken. The choices are endless in the hot sauce section, unbelievable. Fresh whole fish sitting on ice, ready to be picked and cooked at home, your way. Do they clean it as you buy it? I don't think so, as I saw some customers buying it whole. That would be something to ask them. I doubt I'd ever buy fish this way because I once gutted and cleaned a fish and the bad memory has stuck with me. Ugh. Lol. I would, however, buy one of the fresh-cooked roasted DUCKS, hanging and ready to take home and eat. In this particular section, I also saw pre-packaged cut-up roast duck pieces atop rice that were sitting under warming lights, wrapped in plastic wrap. Nearby, there were several tables for customers, where many were heartily eating. Very nice. Lots going on at this store. In the area I came here for a laundry list of supplies that my aunt wanted. I found everything on my list. The store is so clean and well Organized. I loved all the unique treats that are hard to find. I was a little disappointed for the lack of Chinese New Years decor and apparel because I was really looking to add to my house. Even for the everyday shopper you can still find all your needs a typical grocery store would have. Of course the specialty vegan and American groceries you find at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's you won't find, but you will find so much more. Everything was so rush, we felt like they tried to push us out of the store asap while we're putting groceries into the plastic bags. We didn't know that at this location we need to put products into the plastic bag by ourselves so we didn't ask for plastic bags at the beginning and they also didn't ask if we need bags or not. Until we asked for bags, we started to put everything in the bags but the cashier didn't even try to help us but started to scanned other clients' products. I wish if the cashier at least help us to pack first then start on the next client so we don't rush and stand in front of the door to pack. Would recommend if y'all try to improve this and slower the process or even try to help clients put everything in first then start new on other. read more

This storefront is bigger, cleaner, brighter, and just gives off a newer vibe (which it is). There is always nice produce and everything you would need for a Chinese dinner. Especially the pickled vegetables that I cannot seem to find anywhere besides 99 Ranch Market. As a Chinese man I may be biased, but you really cannot go wrong with 99 Ranch Market. Everything you would ever need in your kitchen is available here. Don't feel like cooking? They even have an extensive hot food area with roast duck or barbecue pork. I have been going to the other 99 Ranch location on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard for decades, and I have always hated how crowded and chaotic it was. This newer location is a God send. The store is much bigger with an industrial feel and open ceilings, so you aren't squeezing into aisles and bumping into people as always is the case at the other (tiny) location. The parking is so much better as it's located in a giant shopping plaza that includes Target. The other 99 Ranch location has a crammed parking lot where people where bump your car, have trouble parking into the narrow spots, or just full on scream at you in the parking lot because you supposedly took the spot they were already eyeing. They have all the same stuff as the other 99 Ranch location but it's all spread out. In summary, this newer 99 Ranch location is bliss compared to the other one which is chaos. read more

This location on Balboa is a pretty large grocery market with a lot of selections of fresh fruit, vegetables, mushrooms and other produce. Shout out because their mushroom selection is pretty extensive! They have an entire area dedicated to hot pot ingredients, which is also nice. Prices seem reasonable and quality of observed items seemed good. The labeling of the areas and items were easy to find and well organized. All staff were wearing masks, gloves and the cashiers were wearing face shields. The market was clean and the social distancing markers were distributed on the floor. read more

I basically go there every week for groceries and don't get me wrong.. I love the variety of authentic Asian food the store provides to its customers! However, the service can be really horrible !! This morning I took my daughter to the food court and I was told to pay at the store registry while there's a registry right at the food court. It's obvious that the staff wasn't willing to help the customers. The cashier made some racist comments on my daughters appearance which I felt extremely uncomfortable with. (We are biracial family ) Later tonight I went back to the store to get more stuff. There was this female cashier who is in her twenties. she was extremely rude to me.first of all she didn't offer me to provide my membership ID. By the time I inserted my credit card I confronted her about the problem, she gave me nasty attitude and lied to me saying because I had swiped my card, there's nothing she could do. So I called the manager who handled the situation well but he didn't point out her problem. Instead he said that she's tired. What kind of excuse is that ? In that case the cashier should have stayed home and rest. What did I do to deserve being treated like this ? For the management people at 99 ranch, you guys should really work on the customer service. Maybe learn from Trader Joe's. Although I don't particular enjoy the grocery there but they have A+ customer service. Here's the specifics: 1, provide training for the staff so they can gain some basic sense of cultural diversity and learn not to comment on people's race. 2, hire someone who can handle the job without the attitude. My fiancé and I love this store. It's spacious, it's clean, and it is always stocked with Asian treats at better prices than Zion or HMart (which don't get me wrong, I love going there too). The parking here is better than Mitzuwa or Nijiya Market and definitely much better than the Clairemont store. my one-hundredth​ and last review for 2019: i skipped the frenetic, total-sensory-overload experience at the 99 RANCH MARKET on Clairemont (in Kearny Mesa) and went totally farang-gaijin​-and whatever the pejorative​ in Mandarin for "effing foreigner" is and opted for a more subdued, Von's-like experience at the 99 RANCH MARKET on Balboa (in Clairemont). i'm only writing an "update" so i can tell the tale of how i was accosted by a lady i'm convinced is Cindy S.'s mom's doppelganger​: strolling through the freezer​ section, i was reaching for a package of dried shrimp when i noticed a diminutive​ Asian woman passing out samples (ala Costco) of sui mai and potstickers. not being the ungracious sort of fellow who would say "no" to free food, i stopped to give them a try: gummy and flavorless, they were definitely a "thanks-but-no-thanks" tasting experience. when she asked how they were, i forced a smile and nodded they were "okay." at that point, i might have gotten away safely but, as i turned to finish my shopping, i gave her a less-than-enthusiastic thumbs up. apparently, that was all the encouragement​ she needed. she chased me up and down aisle after aisle all around the store, waving a box of sui mai in one hand and a bag of potstickers in the other, shouting "you like, you buy, you take home." i barely escaped with my life. you know, Cindy, i'll love you either way, but here's hoping not only did the apple fall far from the tree but that after it landed, it rolled and rolled and rolled. read more
