Once you get past the irfed up parking lot and all the fucktard's driving in it trying to park or think they are pulling a fast one by taking up 2 lanes w/out realizing there is an actual reason there are 4 cars deep on line waiting, this TJ's is bigger than most and well laid out. The employee's here are friendlier than the ones in El Cerrito or Emeryville for sure, and when in Lafayette, I like coming here (or used to before the realization the parking lot is so irfed up that Danville is a better place to come). Extra star for not be a stressful location. After dealing with years of SF and Marin County TJ's, this is an oasis. Had become accustomed to the 10-people minimum lines at hours you would typically think slow to be shopping. The freshness of produce, flowers, etc. reflects the types of foods the health conscious of the area are more inclined to buy...Old parking lot is probably the only challenge. Apparently the shoppers are more clean and gentrified and do not use the sampling window to be their lunches...help yourself to samples juices and coffee at the refreshment area of the samples bar. Then again, Contra Costa County TJ's are all pretty phenomenal. read more

Love Trader Joe's but not this one... Went in to do some basic shopping and was amazed at what I didn't find. The employees are great, so let's get that out of the way. I usually shop the pre made salads isle, and the selection was terrible at best. Very little selection and NOT one item was stamped with an expiration date, which tells me that the store is pushing out old produce to reduce there loss of revenue on there expired items. In California and many other States it is law that the reseller show the "Best If Consumed" by date on ALL produce, obviously Trader Joe's Lafayette doesn't follow the consumer rules. I go to this Trader Joes all the time! They always have their products in stock. I have cashiers that I always go to and they are pretty nice! I love their sparkling water and their salads... there is nothing that this place does not have or that has that is not good. The workers are always offering for help. Not my favorite one in the East Bay but I live here so I make the most of it. They do have a nice sampling area. The recipes for their products are usually so yummy. It gives me ideas for potlucks. My biggest problem is that they treat the ripe fruit badly and it gets smushed in my bag. Last night, the cashier threw my pear down to the bagger. Seriously? I told her to be careful and she said, "Oh, I thought it was a lemon". If you're going to sell ripe fruit, then your staff needs to know how to treat it. read more

This TJs is 1) a five minute walk from work and 2) NOT CROWDED! TJs, I had given up you entirely because the crowds, long drive, long lines and overall annoyance was simply not worth the low low prices. Right in back of my apartment. So convenient. My husband and I like to go there and do our coffee tasting while we shop. It's like our own very coffee shop, as we like to think. The only thing is that the selection of veggies aren't much. The breads go out of date really quick, within a week of sale. I once bought bread and did not check properly, and found mold on it the next day I wanted to eat it. So now, I always check it. I like Trader Joe's carrot juice, orange juice, organic non-fat plain yogurt and other various products there. My favorite new find is the 'Peche Lambic-Belgian Peche Beer'. There are certain items that I will always buy here and some items that I stay away. The produce is great - the packaged salad greens, persian cukes, vine riped tomatoes etc. The floral section always have an abundance of blooms to chose from. The wine selection is competitively priced and this is the only place that I can buy a huge scratching pad for my cats. Things I avoid are the frozen food and their fresh poultry and beef. The cashiers are friendly, but did encounter a time when the cashier let a patron with more than 12 items ( a lot more !) check out at her counter. read more

Trader Joe's is good for food everything but it's veggies. The people are always friendly. Yet you should not buy any types of veggies. I first bought some bell peppers, and there ended up being mold inside the bell pepper. I also bought some tomatoes, but they were rotten inside. If you do buy veggies beware. Also I love the free samples. The parking is hard to deal with at times, especially if is morning or around lunch time. Yet i do recommend Trader Joe's read more

Love, love, love. My favorite grocery. Products are great and people at the Lafayette store go out of their way to help you. My girlfriend lives a long distance away and her favorite thing is to go shopping together at TJ's for the weekend. I was shopping last night and my wallet must have fallen out of my pocket. I spent a sleepless night, but when I called in the morning an employee had turned it in completely intact. I tried to give $40 to the manager to give to the employee but he wouldn't accept it. Really, its as good as it gets! I love it here, staff is always friendly, if you look lost they will help you find your way. I once, while in the chips aisle saw a hot new item, I opened a bag of lemon herb chips, (Don't laugh!) it looked interesting, once the flavors hit my mouth, my face and tongue had a sudden disgusted-ugly reaction; my face crunched up and my tongue twisted in different directions. It tasted awful! To my surprise, a TJ employee saw my facial expression and laughed, he said, no worries, if you don't like it, we don't want you to pay for it and politely took the open bag of nasty chips away. TIP: If you buy a product and bring it back for any reason, they will most likely return it without question. (It should be a reasonable return, however). This is my go-to super market, I love their unique and seasonal products. Their selection of cheeses is great, flowers are beautiful, wine is divine, quality chocolate and much, much more. Oh and did I mention the prices.. very low! I guestimate you wouldn't spend more than $7 for any item. This location ROCKS! it has everything I love and everything else.. I have been to several of the other locations and they just cant compare to this staff.... might be that i always go to this location and have gotten to know them, but either way.. this store rocks! some suggestions on what to buy: frozen won tons... eat an entire bag and its only 450 calories mango or green tea mochi.. great dessert and conversation starter uncured pastrami - has a distinctive flavor vs regular pastrami cornbread crust pizza - fresh mini pizza good for one dinner I love the prices at Trader Joes.. I priced out 5 common items at Trader Joes, Safeway and Diablo Foods and TJs was cheaper by $0.50-1.00 per item!!! those savings add up quickly! Check out the lafayette branch and if you need a good wine rec, Bernard, is the man to ask.. either way, all of the workers are friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to help you prepare for your dinner or party. read more

I am so tired of buying rotten produce from this store that I am never setting foot inside again, not even to get a refund for yesterday's rotten purchases. I don't know if they have an issue at this specific store or if the problem is systemic from their warehouse, their distribution center, or what. All I know is that it wastes a lot of my time to return food that I buy that goes bad within 24 hours. I want my grocery store to care about my health - not try to poison me. Additionally, there doesn't seem to be any foresight relative to introducing new products. It's not uncommon that successfully introduced products don't become available again for weeks or even months. And I always laugh when I hear the standard excuse "That product is seasonal" when a canned or bottled product is out of stock. That's a bit incredulous. Isn't that why one preserves seasonal produce? So bye-bye Trader Joes in Lafayette. I used to love you. Now I'm going to shop somewhere where I can depend on high quality of the produce, where seasonally canned products are available year round, and where I can repurchase successfully introduced new products on a timely basis. read more

This place is very conveniently located and within walking distance. While I buy milk, flour, juices, etc, I think the selection of fresh produce is rather sad. The organic produce is way less. I prefer the newly opened Whole Foods, when I have more time in my hands and when I find myself missing the farmer's market. Cheese selection is something I really dig especially since I do not consume cheese with animal rennet and this TJ has a decent selection of such cheeses. The staff at TJ is awesome - very helpful and courteous. Returns are "no-questions-asked" and without receipts. Lines for billing are just a few minutes. Parking could get crazy on busy days/times (read: weekends). read more

I hadn't realized I hadn't reviewed this TJ's. It's been around for several years and we've popped in occasionally when we were in the neighborhood. The parking lot can sometimes be a clusterfuck, as my darling daughter would say, but we always seem to find a spot eventually. It has the usual array of gorgeous flowers and plants. The last time we were there I picked up a couple of stunning golden lilies. They were an amazing color I'd never seen before and I'm hoping they bloom again next year. Other than that, the store carries the requisite array of TJ's products and the TJ's artwork, charmingly personalized to reflect the store's community. I like that. It's in the same shopping center as Kopitiam and Diablo Foods, so it may be a store we shop at more frequently. read more

I first discovered Trader Joe's in West Hollywood, CA., more than twenty years ago. I was quite impressed with their service and the quality of their produce and their fair ( but certainly not cheap) prices. Since then, I've become a regular customer. These days, we shop mostly in their Lafayette store or their downtown Walnut Creek store. In fairness, their track record is not perfect because we've encountered several impatient and rude cashiers, had been shortchanged on at least two occasions and bought some fruits and veggies past their prime. Notwithstanding their less than perfect record, we're still, by and large, happy shopping at TJs. read more

As an example, there was a lunch wrap at least 2 weeks out of date (Southwest chicken wrap) I have also seen out of date food in other grocery stores. This is a pretty terrible Trader Joe's. As a Lafayette lifer, I can say this parking lot has been notoriously bad for as long as I can remember. The shopping experience inside isn't any better. If you want to stand stupidly for several minutes at a time, just trying to squeeze past some oblivious shopper blocking your only exit, this is the place for you. Today, I literally found myself completely circled by shoppers on all sides with absolutely no way out. So I waited patiently while more than one person noticed they were blocking me and simply turned back to shopping...possibly assuming someone else would let me (with my little one year old in the shopping cart) out. I don't know what it is, but this store attracts the worst of Lafayette. And I mean the worst. There is always the promise of a woman staring at 10 identical packages of Italian sausage for waaaaay too long, all the while blocking off access to the prosciutto. "Excuse me" "Pardon me" "Scuzi", all go unnoticed. Finally I reached rudely in front of her and grabbed my item. I got the "how rude" look. I was just so happy she noticed me! I was afraid this was the Sixth Sense scene where I discover I'm really dead. For some reason, I don't need to contemplate the existential existence of my food items before selecting and placing in my cart. It only takes a matter of moments for me to grab my items and go. I just don't fit in. I can't seem to channel that utterly self absorbed state of being that it takes to shop here. The allure of cheaper prosciutto, smoked salmon, good cheeses and Two (and a half) Buck Chuck aren't enough to keep me as a regular. I'll stick to Whole Foods. Say what you will, at least people are friendly and considerate. read more

The store is great-5 stars. Staff is friendly and helpful. One of the nicer ones to shop at in the East Bay. Why not 5 stars? The parking lot is a mess! I usually park on Mt. Diablo Blvd. and pay a quarter rather than deal with the BS. The post office and other retail shops are busy and how do I say this nicely? The average age of the people here are higher than most areas..If you go here during non peak times, you should be fine. read more

I really love trader joes and enjoy trying all of their enticing products. This location is close to my work so I freequent it often and the staff is wonderful. If I'm pondering over something, they'll ask me if I need help and make friendly suggestions and at the register, the cashier will most often give me great recommendations on what to do with what I've bought. This store can get congested and parking is a mess but I always walk out with a smile and much more than I needed :) read more

I like Trader Joe's for a lot of my shopping but they don't always have a needed item. They don't carry dill, for example. Not a biggie, but did have to make a trip to Safeway then. Parking is difficult at times. The people are always friendly and helpful when I need to find something. I LOVE the way they bag my groceries! My main complaint is that I have had to return most of the meat/poultry purchases. The recent is tonight. Got ready to fix dinner with the ground beef that I purchased Monday, 9/19. Today 9/21. Two days later and it smells bad, you wouldn't want to eat it! It has a Sell By Date of 9/27!! Such a disappointment!!!!!!!! And now, what to fix for dinner? Have had similar cases with chicken and pork. Will have to return it tomorrow! I won't be making any further meat purchases at Trader Joe's. :( read more

This was my go-to grocery store for the year I spent in Lafayette. I could walk to it in less than 5 minutes and it was always clean, well stocked and as with most TJ's, I loved their prices and offerings. Note that the parking lot should be avoided at all costs. It is too small and there are random poles sticking out of the ground in some weird places. Plus, people cant drive or park, thus adding to the overall frustration. read more
