Yes, it is a small store and the parking lot can be crazy BUT the secret weapon here are the cool people at the registers. I only had a few items when I was in last week, I had cash and Ken (cool employee) and I had a laugh about how easy it is to forget how to actually pay with cash. We all know how to count, but don't do much of it anymore! TJ's also has great greeting cards for .99 and I keep a stash of birthday and blank cards so I always have a few on hand. read more

One of the most annoying things about moving (particularly a long-distance move) is your day-to-day routine gets thrown off. As a creature of habit, I was really happy to see a Trader Joe's close by just so I could stock up on all my favorites and go-to's (a bag of Envy apples, feta, and the mango Greek yogurt). This location is teeny-tiny. With the exception of the much wider aisles, the size reminded me of the TJ's on Columbus in the UWS. They pack a lot of the selection into the square footage, though we couldn't find the baby kale that we're partial to, and the season's watermelons so far were on the puny side (we ended up going to the Whole Foods further down and got one for around $7-8). I want to give the biggest shout-out to the sweetest lady who rang us up. When we mentioned that we had just moved here and almost missed the turn-off (you really do need to keep an eye out for it), she gave us a free "welcome to Boston" reusable bag. So thoughtful and appreciated! We came during a quiet weekday afternoon - there are only about four or five registers, so I definitely expect a line on weekends. There's a tiny parking spot right as you turn in and additional parking around the corner, as well as street parking on the weekends for when there's overfill. read more

The staff here at Trader Joe's really put their heart and soul and helping each customer. This Trader Joe's could be a case study on how to run a business. Obviously they have good management which produces happy employees which are happy to help the customers. In case you don't know, a lot of the frozen meals are of the highest quality. If you Google Trader Joe's frozen meals you'll find a top ones. Not only are they delicious they're healthy. The samosas the dumplings the thin pizzas are all very good. read more

Senior Hour - 8-9AM is well managed, but utilizes the store at full capacity. Newton (and near-by Waltham) is an older demographic, so this heavy, and continued use is not surprising. The marked sidewalk social-distancing places are filled by 7:45. Once the store opens about 25 (or so) people are let in and then additional shoppers are let in as others leave. The parking lot is full by 8AM and stays full. It appears line wait-time is 20-30 minutes. The situation is self-regulating as with the parking lot full or nearly full, newly-arriving prospective shoppers look around and then just leave. Everybody is wearing masks and behaving well, but there are probably better Trader Joes to patronize just now. I'd suggest the unfortunately (and aspirationally) located Allston TJs. It has underground parking and therefore a more comfortable wait space. Allston also has a wine and beer section. (Brookline and Needham likely have the same demographic issues as Newton The Allston TJs also exists in the heart of Boston's student area - which has been additionally decimated by the university closings. I usually go at random times during the week so my perspective may different to some other reviewers who go during peak hours (which I don't recommend for any grocery runs) -Pros: --TJ Associates waits outside, wipes carts/basket from customers after they unload into their cars. --Store is relatively well stocked except meat section (which I'm seeing with other supermarkets I've been to) --Check-out lines are never too long, with place holders to ensure it doesn't extend into the food aisles --Associates are still friendly and helpful with any questions/issues you may have --Associates have cloth masks + gloves and does their best to keep it well stocked and keep a healthy distance away from customers and fellow associates. -Cons: --Store is pretty small (like other TJs) so even with one other person in a single food aisle, it's hard to get what you're looking for without getting close with them. Listen to me. Trader Joes is unlike any other grocery shopping spot. Everything they make is quality and so much of it is autocratically created by Trader Joes. It is not only delicious but quality food. Best of all, it's affordable and they pay their employees well. It started to raining hard outside and said, "oh darn Harlow, I left the umbrella in the car, we're going to get wet." Trader Joe's has become my favorite supermarket ever. Even more than Stop&Shop, and I was SO loyal to Stop&Shop! What about Trader Joe's makes it far above the rest, you ask. There are so many things! 1. Variety. They make all their own stuff, and not everything is spectacular, but once you go here, you'll come back for a specific variety of your grocery shopping. I buy tons of snacks here. The giant bags of white cheddar corn puffs, the chocolatey chip cookies, the cinnamon letter cookies, animal crackers, etc. Especially around the holiday season when they have those special Peppermint Oreo's that are to die for. Other items sold here in the bakery and frozen food department are also great, it goes far above and beyond the snacks. 2. Prices. They stay the same and are reasonable. I come out of a Trader Joe's nearly every Sunday with around twenty dollars of snacks that lasts an entire week of munching all afternoons. The prices are also accurate... their are no discrepancies in pricing since their are no sales and therefore no ways for consumers to be overcharged (a pet peeve of mine that is constantly an issue with other large grocery stores). 3. Convenience. I am in and out of here within five minutes EVERY time I shop. I always purchase the same exact things here and therefore every time I come here I will be in and out within five minutes or less (this is not a joke, this is honest). Lines are never long and the thing it will take the longest to do here is park! 4. Reliability. Shelves are always fully stocked and they always have everything I'm looking for. While I love all the TJ locations I've been to, I will say that the Needham Trader Joe's has had empty shelves a few times in the past. On some occasions they have been able to get the item from the back for me, but this place always has fully stocked shelves. 5. Staff. At every Trader Joe's, everyone is always so friendly and full of energy. They have a fabulous crew of associates that all enjoy their job and show it! This specific one does a great business with a full parking lot nearly all the time, but still manages to fill the needs of low prices, short checkout lines and fully stocked shelves all the time (no exceptions!). It's unfortunate that so many moldy, expired, or nearly expired items are on display. We often have to dig to the back of a shelf to find something that doesn't expire within the next day. Also bought heavy cream that didn't expire for over a month but was already sour and chunky when we opened it. Hmm.... It looks like disgruntled Yelpers' main complaint is that Trader Joe's doesn't sell their lovely, cheap selection of booze here. Well, welcome to Massachusetts, where we have ridiculous arcane laws that govern that sort of thing. From the Telegraph: "...It isn't easy making sense of Massachusetts liquor laws. Cities and towns control who can sell beer, wine and liquor. The number of licenses they dole out is limited by their population. Until this year, a person or group generally could own up to three licenses to sell alcohol. That's why it's pointless to look for "Two Buck Chuck" wine at Trader Joe's in Shrewsbury. The specialty grocer sells alcohol only at stores in Framingham, Cambridge and Brookline. Yet under legislation passed last year, retailers can now hold up to five "off-premises" liquor licenses in Massachusetts. In 2016 the limit jumps to seven, and in 2020 it goes up to nine. The numbers are the result of a grand compromise in 2011 between food retailers that wanted to sell alcohol and liquor industry groups that preferred the status quo. The last time the sides clashed in 2006, voters defeated a measure that would have cleared the way for cities and towns to issue licenses to supermarkets to sell only wine. Food retailers had been gearing up for another ballot question this year, but withdrew their opposition because of the new law. Liquor industry groups were glad to avoid another expensive fight..." So THIS MEANS THAT OUT OF ALL TJ'S LOCATIONS IN MA, ONLY 5 ARE PERMITTED TO SELL ALCOHOL. Hope that clears that up for y'all. As for the other complaints, I guess you've somehow missed out on the pleasure that is shopping retail in Newton, where EVERY customer is always right, special and in a hurry. Seriously, people in Newton suck everywhere, not just here. You can't fault TJ's. As far as this store, the employees are always super helpful and nice, and have gone above and beyond for me many times. They are happy to reserve items for you, or call other locations to track down something that's out of stock. It's small, but they get orders in all the time, and I find it a lot easier to navigate. I prefer to shop like a ninja -- in and out in 15 min or less -- and it's easy to do that here. In conclusion, this has been my go-to grocery store for years, and it will continue to be! read more

I never mind braving the crowds the hectic parking situation for this place, but to fight your way in only to find they don't sell beer or wine?! I swear, there were only about 3 other people in here today when I went at lunch. Must have been because of the rain, but I'm certainly not complaining. I love Trader Joe's. I just spent $95 and now I have drinks, breakfast and lunch items plus snacks - all for work. This should get me through a week or two. Granted, tomorrow someone at work will make a suggestion to go out somewhere for lunch and it will seem a lot more glamorous than my frozen rice bowl. So, I'll take them up on it and the rice bowl will remain in the office freezer until it gets freezer burn and has to be thrown away. People stop complaining about parking. There's lot's of store next to Trader Joe's so everybody park on one lot and i always find parking anytime i go there. I read in other review that there's second parking lot i didn't know that but definitely will check next time. Stuff are very friendly, always smiling. I know it's there job helping customers but as soon as i enter in the store you feel that friendly and family atmosphere. I go there a lot so it's feels like i'm coming visit my old friends. The store is not very big but i can find everything i need unless they run out of something. It's happens sometimes, not often but... There's a huge section of pre-made food. Honestly sometimes i got very busy and don't have time to cook so Trader Joe's just saving me all the time :) I know pre-made food is not very good but try their food and you will change your mind. I love some of their breakfast like: Scrambled eggs with potatoes, Spinach and egg pie. Really good. I hate to give this location a horrible review BUT due to its location it deserves it. There is absolutely little to no parking and this place is always busy even though Ive visited nights, weekends, mid day, and morning. Overall the staff is nice, the selection gets the job done although it has less than others location but parking is the deal breaker. During the middle of the workday around 1 o'clock I visited this location, with an man in front of me to park his car he was waiting for a woman to leave thus I went to the left and waited for a woman to leave. Apparently the man (a total stranger) didn't get the spot to the right of the lot and RACED me for the parking spot. I got the spot, went to get out of my car and this elderly man (in his late 60's early 70's) proceeded to call me a whore, three times! It is because of the other shoppers (this older man) that I WILL NEVER visit this location again. My only response was 'Happy holidays sir, do you kiss your mother with that mouth!' I'd rather visit locations in Burlington, Brookline, Framingham and others where I don't get verbally harassed for a parking spot. read more

SMORGASBORG, SMORGASBORG, SMORGASBORG! That was me today. Throwing everything and anything into my cart. In one trip, I manged to buy salmon steak stuffed with spinach, chicken tamales, and proscuitto and provolone roll ups. I've got my fat free faye yogurt (which whole foods doesn't carry!), CRUMPETS and freaking lemon curd for breakfast... dang it, why didn't i get that orange sherbert? I guess I'll have to go back. What I can't talk about is... how this TJ's differs from other local locations. This one seems smaller than most, and it doesnt sell wine :( I have to head to the TJ's in Cambridge (which is twice the size it seems, and sells wine and beer). Both are about the same distance, but as you can guess, going Watertown to Newton is a lot easier than Watertown to cambridge, traffic wise or Bike wise. And no, I am not an alcoholic. But wine is good to drink, and good to cook with, and I would MUCh rather drink a bottle of $3 TJ wine on a random tuesday night than the $50 bottles I have sitting in my wine rack. I am a huge fan of Trader Joe's! This location does not have wine or beer, which really stinks in my opinion. I just didn't have the heart to give only 3 stars though! What I love about Trader Joe's is that it seems like you can always discover something new and exciting! I definitely have my favorite things that I always get there-- I usually get hummus and pita rounds to snack on. They have decent produce prices, but kind of a small selection. I usually get fresh basil and fresh mozzarella, and then I pick up cheese foccaccini to make tomato mozzarella sandwiched. I also get dog treats there because they have really good prices for Charlie Bears, cookies, and jerkies. My friend recently told me she had a Trader Joe's party-- everyone brought a Trader Joe's app and a bottle of wine. How fun! I will definitely try that sometimes, just have to go to the Brookline or Cambridge TJ's for the vino! read more

Staff are friendly, food is great. Their return policy for anything you don't like is absolutely fantastic! I love the fact that they want you to try new things and will refund your money if you didn't like it. Many times I have had staff go out of their way to make sure that i found everything I needed. Or one time I didn't notice a package of pre-cooked chicken had been open and at the counter they pointed it out to me and went and got me another unopened one. Most places would expect you to go get it or not even tell you so you'd have a nice surprise when you got home. Only downside to this location (which isn't their fault) is they can't sell alcohol, which means if I want to get a great $5 bottle of wine, I have to drive to one of their other locations that does. Silly MA laws. Smaller than some other Boston area locations, they still manage to stock up on everything. read more

Maybe I just don't get Trader Joe's. This location is smaller than others, but is always full of people every time I visit, so maybe they all know something I don't. I've heard stories of how awesome TJ's is, and how they have a lot of affordable options and some not-so-affordable options. Personally, I think a $6 lasagna lunch is brilliantly affordable. There's no restaurant I can think of that would serve me a fantastic lasagna bolognese for that price. However, I'm just not inclined to go out of my way to Trader Joe's because it's just not worth the extra bus ride to pay a few cents less on certain items. I'm also turned off by the fact that some items are subject to availability - the cheese brand that I like might no be available next week because of a supplier issue. (Although being picky about suppliers is how TJ's maintains prices.) In the meantime, I'll stick with my lovely lasagna lunches - until they're no longer available, that is. read more

Every time I go to Trader Joe's (TJ's), I think it's going to be expensive. I expect to pay an arm and a leg for my kosher steak, or my veggie sticks, or my fruit shoeleather stuff, or whatnot (lots of whatnot). But when I leave, the bill rarely ever comes to more than $50, which is a lot less than I pay at Shaw's, a grocery store that claims to *want* to save you money. So TJ's is ... TJ's. It's a nicely-kept store, with semi-friendly staff (they do have their occasionally surly moments, like when "Shep" told me he wasn't feeling well but they wouldn't let him take the day off.... thanks, Shep, really inspiring confidence in me there), and a great selection of products you really won't find anywhere else. I love their trail mix, frozen foods, and corn salsa, which is the best salsa I've ever had (I'm a sucker for corn). You won't lose weight shopping here, and you won't be helping the environment like with Whole Foods, but you'll save money and enjoy your time there. read more

Its hard not to become addicted to Trader Joes. The food is an ever-changing assortment of different and delicious items, the atmosphere is fun, and the people are great. How often have you been checking out, and the cashier gets excited about something you bought? TJoes employees have their own samplings, aside from the sampling bar, and actually have an interest in the products. And about that sampling bar.. there's ALWAYS something on sample, with an employee preparing and discussing the products used. Its not even just reheating something frozen - they prepare a dish, like you would at home, using their prouducts. Like biscuits with maple butter, using their biscuit dough, maple syrup, and butter. Mmm, butter. They constantly are bringing in new items (which are placed in a new items section), and have a great circular that describes them in detail. A really great thing about the new items is that they were hand picked by the company - no brand-name barged in and said "carry this!". There are no big "sales" or coupons. Items are just sold - at great prices. Its a no-nonsense experience, although there is occasional heartache when the spinach dip or frozen breaded chicken tenders are sold out. And speaking of the frozen food - there is PLENTY of it - in all kinds of realms. Prepared meals, parts of meals, meats, veggies, and a ridiculous selection of great desserts (the 3 layer chocolate mousse cake is mind boggling) fill up the deep freezers. Little write-ups of products keep things fun and informative. I could go on and on.. but from grocery shopping to simply gourmet gift shopping, you can't go wrong here. The products, prices and employees can't be found anywhere else. Note - parking at this location is a tad confusing - if the first lot is full you can go around the building. If that is full (which is rare outside of the 9-5 M-F hours of the other businesses in the building), you can park on Washington Street. Oh, and little kids get free balloons. I've been going here for ten years. Everyone's always super friendly and the cashiers are even conversational! The prices are great, as is the selection - I particularly like their frozen food offerings. There are probably dozens of frozen foods you could buy and then stick in the oven for a fast and delicious dinner. I am partial to the spinach spanikopita (sp?). Yes the parking is a little different with the 2 lots, but it's really not bad - I never have to wait for a spot. Very good cheese selection (2 stars alone for this) and a surprisingly strong produce department for such a small store. I like this particular location becaues of these strong points. Pretty decent service, such as in the back where they've always got excellent samples and at the registers. Store can be very crowded and there isn't a lot of shelf space but what they have is pretty good and (for Newton) reasonably priced. Is it my first choice as far as Trader Joe's is concerned? Given the opportunity I'd try Burlington first, but this one isn't bad. Loses a star for the parking area which is just dangerous and bizarre. read more

I love Trader Joe's, but this location is lacking. Yes, I can get all of my favorite items here so it still rates 4 stars, but parking is abysmal. They have 2 lots which aren't connected and they're both constantly full, even in the middle of a weekday. Staff aren't as friendly as in the Coolidge Corner or Cambridge locations, but this is much more convenient to where I live, so I sacrifice because I love TJ's. read more

This is the closest TJ's to my place - and I have to say I'm lovin' it. It's a smaller store, so you may not be able to find everything you're looking for (ie: green cleaning soaps/materials, a wide variety of canned soups, wide variety of produce), but it does have everything I need for my generic weekly stop at the market. When coming down Washington St, you have to really keep your eyes peeled for the plain white building on the right with the typical red lettering (but this is sometimes obstructed by trees...and traffic is always terrible, so drive SLOWLY for once when you're checking out this location). *Parking situation can get a bit tricky; entrance after the store on Washington St. If that tiny lot (I mean TINY) is full, head around the back of the store (next Right drive) which leads to a few more spaces. *Produce: your basics: peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, onions, oranges, lemons, and bananas. *There is still a large selection of pre-made salads, breads, tea, olive oils, snacks/chocolate, and CHEESE (thank goodness). If I know that I'm going to need a bunch of bizarre spices and ingredients, then I plan on making a run to a larger market....but W.N. TJ's takes care of the basics. *No wine or beer :( *EVERY staff member whom I have met has been exceedingly kind and helpful. I love TJ's for all of the same reasons as everyone else - great products and even better prices. This location is an attempt at taking all of that greatness and cramming it into one small space. You can find some of the great products that you know and love from Trader Joe's here, but you may have to push some people out of the way to get to them. It's a small space inside with not much wiggle room for the number of customers that frequent this location. The most difficult part about all of this, though, is the minimal amount of parking that is offered. While the location is convenient, it's not very conducive to the amount of people who shop here. I stop by every now and again, but it's not exactly my favorite TJ's out there. I'm sorry for the residents of Newton who are stuck with this location as their main TJ's. read more

This store is small, and crowded, but very clean, and pretty well organized. Because it's busy it can be hard to navigate with the carts. The cashier lines are long. The staff is the friendliest and most helpful I have ever encountered in a grocery store. The prices are good for an upscale gourmet market, especially for some of the dried fruits and nuts. There is no butcher or deli, all the meat and fish is sealed. A lot of the produce is bagged, too. There's a large selection of already-seasoned and ready-to-cook entrees attractively packaged, if you don't enjoy or don't have time to cook from scratch. They have their own house brand for a lot of the groceries, don't expect to see your usual Proctor and Gamble and Nabisco type brands here. My biggest problem is that they never have everything on my shopping list. Porchini muchrooms? sesame seeds? orechiette? After two or three times, I learned if I shopped here I was going to have to go to my neighborhood supermarket anyway, and it's easier to just go there, where they have all the ingredients I need. Once every couple of months, if I'm alone, I'll go to TJ's and wander around and pick up some of the fun or useful items no one else has: the precooked vacuum-packed brown rice, organic lollipops (seems so wrong, and yet so right!), orange flavored dried cranberries, gourmet frozen chocolate cake. I never bring my family here! DH says he has never seen anything in the store he wanted to eat, which I think is his way of saying he misses the brands he knows, and DD just gets in everyone's way. If you go food shopping for fun, you'll like this store, but if you are busy and you have to cook to feed your family, be prepared to have to go to another supermarket when you're done here. read more

I've been impressed with how well TJs has handled the coronavirus restrictions. As always, the staff are positive, warm and friendly. They wipe down every cart and do a great job of managing customer traffic in the store. And as always, the staff is consistently helpful; if you are looking for something they will stop what they are doing and help you find it, or find out if/when it would be available. I have been to many TJ's in the greater Boston area and this one is probably my least favorite. It is smaller then most and every suburban mom with two strollers and crying child shops here. Bumping into you while they are on their phone and not watching their children. I am just not a suburban type of person I guess. They do not sell booze. I live for cheap wine and trader joes Newton's Folly hard cider. The parking lot is tiny and when everyone drives a mini-van or SUV it can be really, really tight and the wait to park is longer then the I spend in the whole store. I agree with other yelpers that it is best to park on the street and dodge traffic. It is like any other TJ's in the respect that it is clean, filled with healthy TJ brand yummy food at good prices. I will stick with the memorial drive store for now I guess. I have to say the cashier I had was probably the most unfriendly TJ employee I have ever met. He was just not very nice. He probably used to work at Shaws lol. read more

This is the best TJ in the metro Boston region - and I've tried quite a few of them! Having grown up with Trader Joe's in Southern California, it's great to have one close to home to provide all the necessary items for a well-stocked kitchen! While the prices are fantastic (and I can't argue with any place that sells handmade flour tortillas), what sets this Trader Joe's apart is the amazing staff who know where every last little item is, and work hard to keep this place restocked on the weekends. From a great selection of veggie items (Burger Nouveau can't be beat) to keeping my need for tortilla chips satiated (2 lb. bags for a pittance), I'm glad to be back amongst the Joe. The only peeve I have with the chain right now is that they ditched all of their larger-sized jars of salsa in favor of smaller jars. Coming from LA, that's a major step backwards. Recently, they've also stopped stocking the Light Life Gimme Lean "Sausage" and the LL "Bacon" which are both staples of my morning diet. Their frozen replacements are not nearly as good. Kudos to them on the addition of the mighty tasty Tofurky sausages. They go great on pizza to help break the doldrums of cheese and/or veggies. read more

This TJ's is too small, has no wine & beer and has a tiny parking lot. However I love it. The workers are friendly, helpful, eager and have brains in their heads. Although it is small it has a great deal to choose from. The smallness is also cosy. For the wine and beer I trek to Brookline or Mem Dr. Also Framingham's TJ's is a much larger store. I would say the Newton TJ's get 70% of my bus. Then when I get to go to Brookline, Camb. or Framingham it seems overwhelming. I stock up on cases of wine for the next 3 months and make due with Newton to update my fridge. read more
