I am a huge Star Market fan. I wasn't always--you couldn't pry me away from Whole Foods. But Star Market has considerably upped their game. I can now find most everything I want in an organic format at very affordable prices. Food quality in every section matches anything I might find at Whole Foods. The service is absolutely fantastic and this is because Star doesn't lose employees. The employees get to know the customers and what we want. They make us feel welcome and let us know they are happy to see us and help us. As for ambiance I appreciate how clean the store is, product presentation, employee friendliness, etc., etc read more

Let me start at the front door...escalator - NOT working. 11AM weekday ... NO sign of anyone trying to get it fixed. A young couple with a baby stroller showed up and left. Luckily, my legs work and I went up the stairs. No one at the curtesy desk to ask about the 'dead' escalator. Once in the Fruit and Veg area (Perked up since the demise of Russo's) I went to search out my wife's list...corn - 4 picked over ears on a large end cap, no corn...berries buy 2 get one free, on to Cherries - None. Found someone stocking and asked about the availability of merchandise and care. I was told, "they got left off the truck. Come back Friday." Not "let me go look in the back" or anything promising. Onward to the rotisserie chicken on sale for $6.99...wphew, got the last one. I asked at the deli counter and was told the next batch wouldn't be out until after 2PM by the only member on duty in that whole department. Clearly, there seems to be a gap between Star's stated goals and this market's performance. Where are the manager's managers? If could I would give this location a negative amount of stars while doing my shopping today I was aggressively approached while the manager watched and was asked if my service animal is a service animal that is very, very rude and one you're not legally allowed to ask that it caused my service to be very worried due to the fact that it made me very anxious and uncomfortable. Decades ago it was really cool to go to the grocery store built above the Mass Pike, and to be able to just send your groceries downstairs and then drive under to get them was the height of luxury. Again, that was decades ago. Now it is just an old grocery store, in desperate need of a renovation and in REALLY desperate need of self-checkout lanes. The Supermarket is located in Newtonville MA. right outside of Boston. It was called the Supermarket of the Space Age. It's also referred to as The 1960s Space Age Star Market. You shop in Space standing on top of a Highway with cars below you flying by going 60+ MPH. No Kidding! This Supermarket combines 3 different unique elements you won't find anywhere else. First it's the Jetsons 60s Space Age Sky High Shopping Experience. The second element is it's every person's fantasy wish comes true - when you are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. You dream about exiting your vehicle & walking on top of every person's car roof until you get to the exit so you can De-Stress. LOL! I hate to say this but these people have no clue what this place is all about. You know what they say - One Man's Trash is another Man's Treasure. The History: The Mass Turnpike was intended to be routed through Star Market's parking lot in Newtonville, but the owners objected. It took years of negotiations, politicians, lawyers, & a Supreme Judicial Court ruling. Star Market was finally granted "air rights" to build in the space above the highway in 1963. This was considered a "space age" supermarket at that time, hovering over the highway.  Star Market is a medium size supermarket suspended 25 feet above the interstate. Star Market is one of the oldest local supermarket chains in the northeast. You park in the open air parking lot & enter the structure on the side.There is an escalator up & a Stairway, but there's no Escalator down. The shopping carts stay in the store, there are no shopping carts in the Parking lot because they have DriveUp & Go. That's great no shopping carts smashed into your vehicle when you come out. Here's the modern stuff inside Star Market. They have a full service bank & an ATM inside the Star Market. The Produce Department is set up like a Modern Whole Foods & the Refrigerators are all modern too. The rest of the place is Vintage 60s & 70s. You can find modern Organic products as well as Throwback favorites in here that you never even knew they still are made anymore as well as hard to find items. They have a Huge Selection of Polar Seltzer with unusual rare Seasonal flavors you won't find at other places. First the good news: this store has some terrific young workers. Quirky? Yes but very hard working. The bad news is this store is fine if you just need milk and bread. Otherwise, avoid it. They constantly overcharge. Check your receipt before you leave the store and pray someone is manning the courtesy counter to credit you. Terrible grocery store. I have left this store several times frustratedd but today after having my bags loaded I returned home to find I was missing two bags. When I called, they confirmed that my bags were still downstairs in the loading dock. I returned to find my produce still sitting there in the heat. No one had bothered to send it upstairs. Then my floor wipes had apparently started leaking and the lady just put them in the back of my car. No one apologized, offered to replace anything, and in fact, at least one person implied that it was my fault. Not going back even though the location is close and convenient. read more

Having lived close enough to walk here I find it painfully hard to shop here. The vibe and energy this store provides is simply poor. The staff does not like the customers and never make it pleasant. You can go to Wegmans, Stop & Shop and Market Basket and get lovely service but not at Star on Austin Street. The staff is there for a paycheck and do not care about customer service. They are bitter and unfriendly and it shows. Good luck getting someone to wait on you in the prime meat section or deli. The variety at this store is slim pickings. The women that work in is location are difficult. Most of them have been there too long and don't have patience or hospitality except for the lovely woman that loads your car. She is wonderful. There is always negative drama that takes place in that store too. I have witnessed it first hand. Employees smoking out front is disgusting. Customers stealing wings from the hot bar and people eating grapes and cherries out of bags being sold. Today I used the F word in a joking fashion when I was checking out. The cashier another lifer told me not to swear at her register. Ok but let people steal and don't say anything. This place needs an entire employee overhaul because it's a very unpleasant place to shop. My friends in the neighborhood all feel the same. It's too bad because it's awfully convenient. This store, is great in the evenings, where all the meats are priced with $3 off coupons. Because nobody buys there meet at full price. They have a very high Russian population, Jewish population, and not super rich. Their corporate prices are high, but modest for the area. Their staff is rough around the edges, you have to watch for one girl who always puts her hand on the scale when she weighs your vegetables. Definitely watch out for that. Alex however is a friendly guy, who should be store manager. Their store manager however is a prick. This winter with our super snowy everyday, she towed people in her lot which is all fine and dandy however she towed customers while they were shopping. For a supermarket, this place is pretty clean. The main knock here is that the place is ludicrously expensive, but it's Newton. And still expensive. The other knock is that all the food goes through this conveyor belt, and they load it into the car for you. they do this because they're over a highway and there's stairs to get anywhere, etc. You'd think this would be totally convenient, however it's not. The conveyor belt breaks down *all the time.* Seriously, I'd say a full 50% of the time something is stuck, something is lost, etc. It's a headache. I feel bad for the person down there because they get hammered, and it's not their fault. On the plus side, there's a woman down there who loves her job. Seriously, she loves it. She loves talking to you. She loves helping you. She loves everything. She loves it so much i can't even be upset with Star to her because Star can't get their act together. I am from Hawaii so I realize this colors my review. This is my first visit to a Star Market. First, the prices were reasonable when I compare to Hawaii. Second-Where's the Aloha??? My checkout clerk, Matthew never acknowledged my presence. No hello, how are you, did you find everything ok? Nothing! I suggested that he smile and he did manage a small, fleeting grimace. Thank goodness you have Alex!! He bagged my groceries expertly for my 1 mile walk back to my daughter's house. The chips and the bread weren't crushed and the balance of items were perfect for my 68 year old spine!! Alex also talked to me like I was a valued customer!! I am ok with the layout and the prices here but the checkout is never smooth. More times than not, the prices are inaccurate, generally around sale items. Almost every time I have to go to customer service and get the correct price on a special. It either wasn't marked correctly in the aisle or the reduced price didn't come up at the register. The Supermarket Overpass! The COOLEST place to shop. Ever. Now, I haven't actually looked for windows for the Mass Pike (as the store is LITERALLY on the Mass Pike!), but this store is super cool. It's so weird to be food shopping and on the highway at the same time. Also, Bruce Springsteen visited the Supermarket Overpass years ago, which I find quite interesting. Anyway, for the store: it's not huge, yet not small. Somewhere in the middle. It has all normal departments, and a wide variety of products, just not in a luxurious experience such as the Chestnut Hill Star Market. Staff seemed all friendly, happy, and helpful and the prices weren't SKY high. The checkout lines weren't very long, and it was a quick process. Yet, at checkout the cashier asked if I wanted my groceries "taken down". I didn't understand this and he explained how the Star Market of Newtonville is NOT allowed to let ANY carriages leave the store what so ever. So, for people with large grocery purchases, all of people groceries going into a huge bucket and you drive your car from the lot to the "Bundle Pickup", which is at the end of the Parking Lot on Austin Street, looking like a parking garage entrance to pick up all of your food. Cool, and somewhat nice to have someone else be able to load your car, but also inconvenient for the hurry-some people of the world. Plus, this is a neighborhood area, some people may be walking to get their groceries in which they MUST carry them all home in comparison to using a carriage. Too bad the city of Newton has too many strict laws (where are the plastic bags and drive thru restaurants!!! Bad decisions by the somewhat-annoying city of Newton). Overall, good experience, I may return for the hype of the Overpass, but otherwise don't go to much out of your way for it. Nearby Chestnut Hill Star Market, or Auburndale for that matter, are both larger stores, with somewhat easier convenience of coming in and going out (carriage wise). 4 stars. read more

Not sure why I bother buying meats at this Star Market location. Yesterday marks the 5th time I got bad meat in 3 years. I have never had any issues at other Star locations or a different supermarket. I bought pork chops the day before to eat today 4/13. It smelled so bad. The Sell by Date is 4/15. Another time I got ground beef. The next day it turned a lighter grayish color, also an awful smell. Sell by date was also at least 3 days away. Never buying meats again at this location. The parking here is ridiculous. My boyfriend went into a store next door for five minutes very much intending to purchase some groceries from Star after. He got out to a tow truck about to take his car away. They charged him $40. So dumb. This isn't the first time that it's happened to someone. If your trying to run errands don't do it with Star. There's something quaint about this store. If you don't have a long list, and you know that they have the exact item that you want, this can be a very convenient place to shop. There's also an interesting service that they provide where you can have your bags loaded onto a conveyor belt and then an employee will load them into your car when you drive into a tunnel underneath the store. It's a great thing for people who may not be capable of lugging groceries to the car on their own. It's also worth pointing out that one of the women who works down there is extremely nice as well. I personally prefer a bigger grocery store with more selection, and if you do as well then you're probably better off overlooking the novelty of this location and going to a fuller sized grocery store that has the variety you're looking for. read more

I wish this store was better since it's my neighborhood location and would be so convenient. The store is in need of a major makeover-with not only the building but with the staff. There are some older employees that are friendly enough but this younger crew-especially this summer has been terrible. I understand it's hard to get good summer employees but it's like a kids club at checkout. I have 6 kids hanging around talking and goofing off while people are trying to check out. Asked one bagger if he could put a birthday cake in a separate bag-great-but then he dumped a rotisserie chicken right on top, upside down and it leaked all over everything. Loved to find this out once I got home. No hello no thank you-nothing. It's an imposition for them to bag. New training might help with just basic manners. . I would check out Whole Foods or Roche Bros to see good customer service. Please add self checkouts!! You are always short staffed. It's ok. My favorite Star Market will always be the one I lived next to in Allston/Boston, can you believe the prices in Boston are way cheaper than this Star Market? They don't have many significant sales, and if they do, it'll be like a dollar off which is basically nothing. 98% of the products are expensive brand names or organic brand names. I miss being able to pick up the cheaper brands for things I don't eat much of. Stop & Shop in Watertown is cheaper with better sales, cheaper options, and a nicer bank. If I wanted organic/frou frou options, I pop over to Trader Joe's for better deals. read more

Larabar makes a grainless cereal which I used to buy at Shaw's earlier this year before moving to Newton. It's not sold at Stop and Shop, Whole Foods, orTrader Joe's. I wasn't looking for it - but while randomly browsing Star Market to see their prices, I found this cereal. FTW! I normally wouldn't write a bad review about a grocery store or anyone in retail because I have worked in retail before but the attitude of everyone in this place is consistently terrible. Their pricing is all wrong causing me to go back each time. So after living in this area and shopping in five to six different food places the past couple of decades...I go back to Star, which used to be called Shaws for a few decades and now has reverted back to Star...I go in and the place has really been cleaned up and just about every aisle has specials, I go in looking for just a few items and ended up buying so much stuff that I had to reorganize my fridge and freezer for my new supplies!!! I pretty much have shopped here out of nostalgia in the past as much as for any other reason. The first time I came here, I was disappointed to see they only had an up escalator. Going down is generally easier, but not when you have several bags of groceries to complicate the process. The second time I came here, the cashier asked me if I "want to send it down." I thought she may have been referring to my card in the reader, when she repeated the question. It turns out they have a conveyor belt and you can put your groceries in a tub and collect them in the garage. Personally, I feel that it would be much better if they installed a down escalator, so both people AND their groceries could get down to the ground floor. They do have a wheelchair lift, but it's so awkward, the manager helped me down the stairs with my groceries instead of using it. Given the overpriced goods, I would hope they have the funds by now to add a second escalator. Or, do they really not care about customers any more after they take their money? read more

Meh, i really don't like this place, but since i live close, I sometimes just have to shop here, when I don't have time to go further, or when I am in a hurry. And boy, when you are in a hurry, this is the worst place to shop. I swear this place have the slowest cashiers, there are always so so few open, and it takes forever to check out. Also there is a cashier who can be pretty condescending and loves to talk crap about the customer just checked out and left - yes, lady, i know you probably commented on me too, after i've left, as you were making remarks about the person before me the other day - and it's pretty rude, especially knowing that 50% of their customers are probably old people, who are just generally more difficult customers. Or customers with little kids, who had to haul their crap up the stairs and in a hurry worrying about their unattended expensive strollers. Anyway, i usually find what i need here, has a pretty OK selection of organic produce too, but the employees rarely have any idea where to find anything in the store. Yes, they have that conveyor system, which is fine, but since i bet at least 70-80% of their customers actually WALK to this store, it's not that helpful. And it's beyond me why on earth they can't put a friggin' elevator in there. There is no way to go into this store with a stroller. Yes, they have a handicap-lift, but you are not allowed to use that with a stroller. And the escalator only goes one way: up. So either you leave your stroller outside the store (yeah, i trust people, but still), carrying the kid and you stuff up, then when you are all done, you can tumble down the stairs with all your grocery bags, the kid, and your other stuff you did not want to leave unattended outside. Outrageous. I try to avoid this place if i can, and if you are walking with a stroller, don't even dream about shopping here. read more

This grocery store is dirty and lacking inventory. They also have a ridiculous policy in their parking lot. I sent my son to the grocery store for me today. He chose the Newtonville Star (not where I would choose) so he could get his hair cut first, right around the corner. He parked in The Star Parking lot, was gone for 30 minutes getting a haircut, and when he returned to grocery shop his car had been towed. He had to pay $140.00 to get the car back. I called the store and was told that is their policy, the parking lot is only for their customers. When I explained that he was intending to shop there, she said that didn't matter. I was also told that if he shopped first and then went to get a haircut that would have been ok. That makes no sense whatsoever. They are apparently paying people full time to watch the parking lot and see which way people walk after parking their car and have a tow truck at the ready. What if someone needed to go the bank before grocery shopping? Towed! Coffee first? Towed! Most towns are covering up their meters or wrapping them in a bow for the holiday season. Newtonville Star apparently does not feel that holiday spirit is in the air. There are SO many better options for grocery stores-cleaner, better selection, better prices, better customer service and you won't get towed if you happen to combine your grocery shopping with another errand. read more

I no longer shop here and I live down the street. I may run in for a couple of things but never a full order. Once my I got my order switched with another customer. Star did nothing to help but give me other customers number. I had to drive to a strangers house to exchange groceries. Don't you agree Star should have done that? Then a couple of months ago my whole order except for 2 bags were given to another customer. First The customer service kid told me to go downstairs and look for it. Me? Then when I complained they were gone, a woman manager told me to just go get them again. Me? I told her I had just spent an hour there. So I told her to give me my money back. So I wrote a letter to Star telling them how no one actually helped me and I had been a weekly customer for over 30 years. So Scott the manager there now, called to say his staff needed training. I said I would no longer shop there. He said come back and introduce myself. So last week I decided to do that. He did absolutely nothing about my experience there. He never offered me any type of gift card for my inconvenience. He could not have cared less. So I guess not only does staff need training in good customer service so does Scott the manager. read more
