Matt, the owner, has a great shop. There's a nice selection of wines and he'll occasionally have a wine tasting. He also has pastas that are locally sourced and different international snacks . The market is in a nice area and if you go to another shop in the area and it's apparent that you did so, Matt offers a small discount for supporting local businesses. I find going to the Walnut Market comforting and a nice way to support a local business that carries certain snacks I love! read more

This neighborhood is lovely and fortunate to have such a diverse market that offers unique, high-quality items from around the globe.

I am such a fan of small markets like Walnut Market which offer a variety of products at reasonable prices. It's so much fun to go in and browse and you are guaranteed to find some cool items. I came with a purpose though as a Facebook group I'm in had a post about Montreal bagels being in stock and wow, I haven't been there in over two years and have missed those bagels so that was enough to get us into the car and on our way! They have a huge selection of Montreal bagels. And these are definitely the real deal. I think the package of rosemary bagels we purchased lasted two days. The cinnamon raisin are still safe in my freezer but they're coming out to play very soon. Along with the bagels, there is a huge selection of beer and alcohol with some brands you just don't see around here. And yes, there are brands you'd see in Montreal and we bought some. I wonder what the connection is as this is really the only place I've seen that has these items. They also have a nice selection of British candy. I tried the Cadbury Turkish Delight bar (mmm not really my thing but I appreciate that they have a cool flavor) and a dark chocolate almond butter cup (very nice). The selection was awesome - it was hard to not buy more. And the service was friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend them, even if it's a bit of a drive to get there! read more

There was a time I was very happy to drive the 20 minute drive from my office to this store, since then my opinion of Moe and this establishment has soured. I was first tipped off to this little place when I was on the hunt for Cantillon at Marty's when someone there overheard me and told me about this place. I was ecstatic and I jumped in the car and drove down there. My first experience was great, I found 2 bottles of Lou Pepe Kriek and I was over the moon! I paid a reasonable price and picked up another beer out of courtesy. This was my best experience and it has been down hill ever since. I have been here a few time since my first trip and my experience has gotten progressively worse with each visit. Admittedly I really only go looking for beer here when there has been a recent drop of Cantillon through Shelton Brothers and this is for good reason. There is not a whole lot of beer here you cannot find at another store that has quicker turnover and better storage conditions. If you are interested in buying old hoppy beers that do not benefit from sitting in a shop that typically runs around 75-80 degrees, this is the place for you. The owner is notorious for strategically placing his price stickers over expiration dates and "bottled on" information. I am certainly not the first person to notice this and it has been noted in other reviews. Moe started off trying to sweet talk me into buying beer when I first came through and has progressively gotten more and more off putting with each visit. I had pleasant experiences at first and since then he has been more and more pushy and unpleasant. A couple of times he was very insistent that I come to his tastings which are typically on weekdays and not at all convenient for me. A cursory glance through his Facebook page seems to show that these are his venue for his "private sales" where he sells marked up acclaimed beer such as Heady Topper, Hill Farmstead and Lawson's Finest Liquids. To me this is not only illegal but scummy; this is essentially is riding on the coattails of others success. These beers are not distributed through any channels in Massachusetts and are downright illegal, admittedly this has become a pretty common practice around the greater Boston area but that does not justify this behavior. My most recent trip was what triggered my ire and encouraged me to sign up for Yelp so I could share my experience. I was on the the mailing list for Walnut Market and received periodic updates about things I had absolutely no desire to buy but two days ago I got an email about a shipment of Cantillon that had arrived. Moe sent out a picture of 5 bottles that had arrived and so I made it a point to come by on my next lunch break. When I arrived Moe "welcomed" me and said something to the tune of "Oh, you only come around when I get my Cantillon shipment"; well of course I do! There is nothing here I cant get at 3 closer, cleaner and better run places. The next thing Moe said to me truly shocked me and I actually asked again later to confirm it wasn't just a crude joke that didn't land well. Moe told me in order to buy one bottle of his generic Cantillon shipment (Bio, Kriek, and Rose De Gabrinus) I would have to spend $100. I was flabbergasted by this statement. I know there are stores that give preferential treatment to regular customers but to send out a email to your listserv advertising that you have a beer and to then gouge me when I come looking for that beer is profiteering nonsense. I have no doubt that this will work for him and he will get 5 people to buy the stuff that is festering in the mess of a store he is running but I will not be one of them. If you are into rummaging through a ill-managed unorganized store, this is the place for you! If you keep coming here hoping you'll score something cool, you might and I wish you the best of luck. It is far more likely that Moe will berate you and try and get you to buy something that you really shouldn't. Please take your money elsewhere, please go to Vermont and visit the wonderful breweries up there rather than paying this hack who's entire business is propped up by his under the table *wink wink, nudge nudge* sales. read more

Very cool and eclectic little store. Stopped in here while checking out the neighborhood and was pretty shocked at how great this place was. Its a mix of a Middle Eastern market & liquor store. The selection is pretty amazing and varied. They had all sorts of foods, spices and other selections. Some of which I recognized and many I didn't which really intrigued me. I also was super impressed with the beer selection. It was one of the widest and most interesting set of selections of any store in the area. The knowledge of the owner was also pretty amazing. He is clearly an expert when it comes to beer. The prices were pretty fair and I will definitely be making some return trips. They also offer beer tastings and food tastings on a regular basis which are a nice touch. The decorations in the store are also pretty cool. I mean how many places use real Persian rugs and have a giant hookah. read more

Between the incredible selection of hard-to-find, or "expose me to something new," items - the Walnut Market is the real deal. To top it all off, you've got great people behind this gem of a store. It's owned and operated by a local family that cares more for making sure it supports other local family businesses than it does selling in bulk to the highest bidders. What I mean is that they'd rather make sure they are selling to good people who care about the products they sell and where they come from. Why bother? Because you know you're getting good stuff because they wouldn't eat or drink it themselves. If you're someone that likes high quality goods and finding something new every time you step into a place, this is the store for you! This place has enough charm in it to make up for all of the other soulless places in Newton Highlands and it is all because of Moe. Fantastic beer selection, including many beers I had never seen before. He also had beer and wine tastings about once a month and he uses the knowledge he gets from the brewers to give you some great selections. Finally found some South African groceries! Was over the moon to find Appletizer, Ouma rusks and Provitas! The owner was very nice and insisted we taste all the Persian food he just cooked. Very Convient, Import Ethnic food city. Food stuff from all over the world. You could drop some serious coin in here. Cookies, Candy, Chips, Drinks! Even Deli, Dairy stuff. They Sell Rugs, and of Ethnic Items. They have their on ATM Machine. No Wheelchair Access, but they do have a bell. Ring it and someone will come out and help you. This place is a must try. This shop is adorable and full of treats and spices from around the world. The man behind the counter, who I assume was the owner, was incredibly nice and knowledgeable about all the products. The prices are a little high, but hey, it's less costly than hopping on a flight to get your treats. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the shop carried AWESOME beers. The man at the counter was quick to ask all the right questions about what types of beers we typically like and he was able to suggest a variety of others to try. Again, the beers are a bit pricey, but you'll find gems that you won't find elsewhere. Definitely drop by this shop! I hear they do beer tastings as well. read more

The best thing I can say is they have Heddy Topper. The worst thing I can say is they make you jump through major hoops to get it. You have to praise them throughout social media, then buy $20 worth of the other stuff they sell as well. Adding to that, the 4-pack is $28! Total gouging. read more

I walked into here by accident while looking for a different place. The hookah in the window signaled my mistake, but intrigued, I went in anyhow and was completely happy to find that it was a persian market! I was psyched. I had been in need of a few Iranian staples for awhile. I found rosewater, unsweetened pomegranite juice, sumac, zereshk, they even had kashk! Unfortunately, I was so excited to go home and make a pot of vegetarian fesenjan that I didn't chat with the proprietor for very long, but he was extremely nice and was a little interested in how the irish girl learned to cook persian food (an ex boyfriend). Imported foods that are hand selected by the owner, "Mo" -- who is so friendly and will let you taste the newest finds..... sometimes brownies and other sweets.... sometimes a new middle eastern dip that is unique to his store.... just lots of stuff. Also pedestrian things like Sprite, milk, etc. Beer tastings. Very eclectic and rare selection of beers, so Mo has a "tasting" -- I think once a month. Oh, and persian rugs, too. Seriously. There are some people who come here just for the stuff from Montreal (bagels and smoked meat) (I'm not one of them. I like the mid-east food best). read more

Look no offense to ZM, everyone has their own experiences and opinions. I just have to disagree (respectfully) with the review left by Zachary "M" I was shocked to read the vitriol in his review... and sad that I too had to join YELP just to rebut this unfair and truly nasty review. Moe is a charming wonderfully sweet person who supports the local community and is a treat to spend time with. Moe is NOT perfect and he is the first to admit it. And yes, certainly the reviewer is entitled to his opinion but it would have been fairer if he had mentioned that English is Moe's second language. He is well educated but at times we can all speak in a way that is misinterpreted. Basically, the reviewer showed up to purchase a very special item and was turned away. Too bad - I got the CANTILLION and was thrilled that Moe saved it for those of us that are keeping his store open. Moe treasures his regular clients. Shame on you for not being one of us. To everyone else, Walnut Market and Moe are not perfect. But give them a chance, it's a gem of a shop. I am betting you will be pleased that you did. read more

After hearing about this place and their beer selection from a friend, my wife stopped in to get some beer. The problem is, she was not a regular so the guy behind the counter would not sell her any "Cantillon" or other selected beers unless she bought an additional $100 worth of merchandise. I understand rewarding loyal customers with the occasional rare find, but telling a new customer you need to buy $100 worth of stuff you don't need doesn't reward anyone but the store. It's great to see and support a local business such as this in Newton Highlands! Great for out of the ordinary brews and eclectic packaged food. The store is somewhat unique but the owner is not very honest. He deliberately covered the expiration date with price tags on some cookies that were expired 5 months ago (every package of this cookie was covered so I don't think it's coincidence). He told me the bagels from Montreal are delivered fresh every week when in fact it is every two weeks. read more

I live in this neighborhood, and this store is even better than the other reviewer suggests. Moe, the owner, took what had become a dingy convenience store and turned it into an international gourmet market that still has convenience store stuff. It's more than just the Persian delicacies she writes about; he's got great foods from England, Ireland, other Middle Eastern countries, great feta cheese from France and Bulgaria, yogurt from Greece, Armenian breads ... the list goes on and on. Also, Walnut Market has become the only place I know of in the Boston area where you can get the famous Montreal bagels. Plus, he keeps getting incredible beers that I haven't seen anywhere else. It's really great to have this store in our neighborhood, and it's worth traveling to. read more

They have Lester's / Montreal old fashioned smoked meat (Romanian Pastrami). They say that Schwartz's is better but I don't really care if its platinum or white gold. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is that Mo keeps giving me free Montreal bagels when I say no thanks - but they are the best on the planet. read more
