It has been our favorite and go to lodging whenever we go to the coast since relocation to Portland in 2021. Family owned, Neil is very hands-on, front & center of every aspect of the business. He can appear short at first, yet as you get to know him as returning customer, you will appreciate his attention and care for the place. Two levels with direct access to the beach, maximum 20-25 units, most of them facing the ocean with their own balcony & kitchen (no crabs cooking allowed), no pets at the moment. My husband & I love the fact that we can open the sliding door & falling asleep to the relaxing waves. Even with PNW fall and winter weather, we fully enjoy storms watching from our own balcony. Older property & dated decor, yet well maintained to ensure you feel comfortable and relax away from home and short getaway. Walking distance to everywhere in town, you don't need to drive after you get here. This place is a beachfront gem in a quiet little town on the coast. The rooms are immaculately clean and they have what you need to relax and enjoy a few days of relaxing. The view from each room is beach facing. If you're on the ground level your back porch opens up onto the backyard with some picnic tables and a few stairs to get down onto the beach. I noticed that people set bonfires on the beach and enjoy them at night. The town itself is pretty quiet, most restaurants close by 8pm. It's well situated to the bay for crabbing, boating and clamming. The tv is big and has cable but it does not let you screencast or connect to it so if you want to stream, you can't. Internet works well. The bathroom is decent. Shower pressure is amazing and hot! Kitchenette is basic, but it has what you need if you want to cook a meal (just not fish or crabs or you will be fined!). The fireplaces don't work- those would be such a nice cozy touch if they did! The owner is wonderful and so helpful and fun to chat with. Bed was very comfortable with plenty of extra pillows and blankets. read more

Location is amazing, views from ocean front rooms are perfect. Rooms themselves.....is a different story. Extremely outdated: broken fireplace, everything is worn out to the extreme. Foil on the range. So sad when it's the perfect location and so much potential but they let it go. No lights pointing to the beach so you can't even see the ocean at night.. other hotels do that at night so their guests get the best of the experience- it's cheap and easy. When we arrived the man that checked us in was great! He was very friendly and even upgraded us to a king room without us even asking. That was a nice surprise. We got to the room and it was larger and had a full kitchen. It was very clean and the grounds were well kept. We were on the second floor so it was amazing to be able to sleep with the sliding glass door open and hear the ocean all night long. Very easy beach access. We will definitely stay there again if we are ever in Rockaway Beach again. Highly recommend. read more

Is it a little run-down? Yeah, but so am I. The room was clean and just steps from the sand. I read a stack of reviews of this place before I went and, honestly, I feel like some folks just want to complain. It's fine. Could I hear my neighbors? I heard a couple doors close. Did the fireplace work? No, but that was clearly communicated beforehand. Was the room too warm? Yeah, it was at check in but I turned off the heater and it was fine. I worked in hotels for years, both corporate and independent. These folks are doing an excellent job with an older building and if you're not looking for the Ritz Carlton in Rockaway, Oregon, it's just fine. I'll be back. read more

Wonderful little Motel. Owner is friendly, attentive, and super on top of things. Both the outside, and inside of the motel are spotless. There are no real frills, but there are many areas where they go the extra mile. I.e the mattresses are firm and in great shape, there's dual high pressure shower heads, high quality towels, and a microwave and rather large mini fridge. The expression "Don't judge a book by it's cover" may seem like a cliche, but it is more like good advice when considering the Tradewinds Motel. We spent several nights at the Tradewinds Motel while on vacation in Rockaway Beach. And each night the place grew on me a little bit more than the day before. My wife and I have always enjoyed staying at older, quaint coastal hotels, which was why we chose the Tradewinds. The best aspect of this hotel is that it is right on the beach! You can leave your door open all night (don't worry, they have a security bar for the door) so you can hear the waves and get cool fresh air. Having a kitchen and a dining area is so nice, because you can make your own pot of coffee in the morning, and eat take-out food whenever you like. The rooms have been refurbished with new furniture, and the bed was great. We had a fireplace, and they provided a DuraFlame log to burn each night. The bathroom was clean, and there was always plenty of hot water (which is nice!). Relaxing and watching the sunset from the balcony is probably the highlight of our stay here. The Oregon coast never gets old. The Tradewinds Motel is currently undergoing some pretty major renovations. It appears that the winter was hard on the building, and several aspects of the building exterior is being worked on. New decking and railings are being installed, as well as siding in a few places. The manager told us that they lost their stairway to the beach in a large storm over the winter, and the back area is in a bit of disarray due to the repairs. So yeah, there are a few blemishes on the Ol' Tradewinds, but if you look past them, and focus on the all the pluses of this quaint little place, you might just end up enjoying your vacation here on the Oregon Coast. read more

The other reviews are 2 years or older, except for one. Place is beat up. You hear everything your neighbors are saying through the walls. You smell them cooking food. The whole building makes noise with people using the stairs. Fireplace can't be used because a big ugly sign says it is broken. Room is not clean all the way. I worked as an apartment manager for 25 years and this place would not pass a move in inspection. No dishwasher with a kitchenette. You have to hand wash your own dishes and trust the last person to have washed them correctly. To top everything off there was no hot water in the morning and only lukewarm all the way till noon. Don't know if there will be any later. For a 5 night stay $800 plus is not reasonable for what you are getting. read more

Notes I took during my stay: Rm 102 Neil - friendly at the counter, nice staff! Balcony/access/1st floor/sliding doors - had a semi-private balcony (shared steps to beach, wall in between balconies). The balcony was nice, just a few steps off the sand. Tables/BBQ/weber - welcoming community area with picnic tables and weber BBQ kettles! 13 steps to beach - literally 13 steps from the beach! Very quiet - I was there midweek, but rockaway is nice that way...usually more of a chill spot Duraflame/real fire - best thing ever! REAL fireplace! Duraflame firelog provided. Never seen a real fireplace in a motel/hotel room. Usually gas. Parking - spot close to your room. Cleanliness/barefoot - I felt like I could be barefoot in there and I'm pretty picky... Never even turned on music or tv/waves - it was so peaceful, I just had the sliding glass doors open and listened to the ocean all night. No TV or music. Just waves. Dark outside, no light pollution/stars - it was great! No light pollution towards the water. When it was dark it was DARK. Dog friendly - had my choco lab with me. It was perfect. Sleeper sofa - the room had a queen bed and sleeper sofa so it felt spacious rather than full of beds. Kitchenette clean/well stocked - it was cute! Had everything you'd need and even some extras. Bathroom clean - updated & clean, always appreciated. Tealites & fireplace & ocean waves - I literally sat on the bed, watched the fire, ate cheese & crackers and listened to the waves. Brought some tealites and a hurricane lamp for the balcony. It was just what I needed! The friendly staff made it even better. read more

We've been coming here for years and I didn't want to share this place with others so I never wrote a review...BUT I will do so now to give a fair account of the place. What I appreciate is that they seem to update the decor every few years: Carpet, bed, adirondacks, bathroom tiling, lamps and T.V. have all upgraded in the past 5 years. Internet access is great once you click on the 'proceed to internet' button after typing in password. Streaming and cable have had no lag. We've never had trouble with noise either. The bed is SUPER comfortable and the place has always felt safe and clean. We love the kitchenette because it makes the trip more affordable. Is everything perfect? No! Some guests have burned driftwood in the fireplaces where the salt has then eroded the chimney. As we all know, the Pandemic has left the work-pool short-handed so it takes awhile to fix. Do you want to ding them for this? Or do you want to handle this with grace? I choose grace because these are some hard-working folk who provide a wonderful getaway experience...and not everything is in their control. Be warned however that Neil, who is very patient, will also not tolerate bigotry...which is another bonus to staying here: Your fellow guests aren't lame. read more

My husband and I just spent 10 days here. We LOVE the Tradewinds Motel, the owners, and staff. They all work so hard to ensure that you will have a wonderful time. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes here. Taking care of any place that is directly on the beach is a huge commitment and under taking. The salt air destroys things so quickly. The owners work so hard to ensure that things are updated, repairs made, and if you have any issues, all you have to do is talk to the owner. The rooms are warm, comfortable, and have everything we need. The beds are very comfortable, the showers are wonderful with there double shower heads and we have never ran out of hot water! TV's are wall mounted with a great picture, furniture is comfortable and in great shape, the balcony's all have a spectacular view and you are a few steps from being on the beach. The Tradewinds Motel has it's own beach access. The rooms smell wonderful as no smoking is allowed in the rooms. We cannot wait to come back! For the price I don't want to complain a lot. But we are staying 5 nights and first vacation in a year. I was told this room had a fireplace which it does. When we arrived there was a sign on the fireplace that said it is out of order and a fire hazard. The internet is god awful so if you wanted to work remotely that is out of the question and forget streaming a series on Netflix. The walls are paper thin and you can hear your neighbors cough, hear complete conversations, and go to the bathroom. The rooms have kitchenettes but with rules about not cooking seafood, but you can smell anything your neighbors are cooking all night long. Our dogs were crated but started to bark so we were called by the hotel owner and had to crate our dogs in our car. Luckily the weather was not hot so this was doable when we couldn't be in the hotel room, and couldn't have them with us. We have brought our dogs with us on many hotel stays and never have had this happen. While taking my shower I lost hot water. Also, since it was during Co-Vid there was no housekeeping during the stay so we had to ask for clean towels and how many were needed. I do think the owners could change this and just bring you towels every day and pick up trash instead of guests having to dump trash and ask for towels. I will say the owner Neil was always very nice, the view is fantastic from your balcony, and the bed comfortable. I guess my expectations are too high for a relaxing stay. If you want a no frills motel, that is clean enough, but could be cleaner, and right on the beach this place is for you.....but bring ear plugs. read more

Booked thru hotels.com which I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING. I'll explain in the review why. Motel looks like it may be rundown but it is far from it. Rooms are very clean, well maintained and smell good. (Was terrified they would be musty). Our room was very basic...bed, fridge, microwave, bathroom. But it worked. Our friends had an ocean view room which we enjoyed. Manager was very nice, especially considering our reservations had been made incorrectly thru hotels.com. I love the fact that the ocean was less than 50 feet away. So refreshing. It was in a quiet area, with a small market a few blocks away. Perfect spot for a getaway. I will definitely stay here again. Please note: NOT in Cannon Beach. This is where hotels.com screwed me. They had it listed in Cannon Beach and guaranteed all rooms had an ocean view. Not the case. But I was not disappointed in the motel itself. Pleasantly surprised. read more

Room was decent. Not the issue. The issue came later when we realized they charged us an additional $100 on my credit card. Our 1st attempt to have this corrected was on the property in the lobby with the same employee that ran the credit card. We were told to "call the owner". Why do I have to call the owner? Shouldn't he call me? This is your mistake shouldn't you fix it? Fast forward a couple days. I've left my info with the front desk, they have it on the reservation, etc.....no call. We call again. No owner present again. This time I tell them if I dont get a call back in the next 24hrs I will dispute the charge with my credit card company. Magically I get a call back. But it's not to claim responsibility, apologize, or anything of the sort. No, the owner "Mr Klein" proceeds to explain to me that we were charged an additional $100 for smoking in the room. Explained that he personally smelled it the day before and that I should be grateful he only charged $100 as it's posted $150 in the room. 1st of all. We don't smoke. Anything. 2nd, they charged the credit card and gave us a receipt AT CHECKIN!!! How are we supposed to smoke in a room we have never even been in? After bringing this to the owner attention I tell him to refund my money or again, I will dispute the charge. He calls me back again, while I'm at work, and leaves another voicemail. AGAIN, no accountability, no apology, just more threats and BS excuses. " you need to charge whatever booking company you booked with. Not our problem they charged you to much. We are right in our end" WRONG AGAIN! I called him back again, at work again, and explain this time that we made the reservation online, however his incompetent staff processed the payment incorrectly on the premises. At this point I'm beyond livid, it's costing me more time then the $100 is worth. I've disputed the charge and now taking the time to write this warning for others. This guys a typical motel scammer. Always trying to slip something past you. Oh....and he called back a 4th time. This time to explain it was his employees fault they gave us an ocean front room and charged us more for it. We thought all rooms are ocean front, but we should know better. After all, we are the employees right? Still no apology, just some "advice" on how to deal with someone trying to steal from me Stay somewhere else and save yourself the hassle of dealing with these people. read more

My wife and I stayed here for one night and the fact that the website was lacking basic functions should have been a clue. We booked a beach front room anyway at $198 per night after all their extra fees. We arrived and first contacted the front desk and they were very friendly, and from the outside the motel appeared very nice. Unfortunately thats where it ended. The rooms could be very nice but need serious updating. All the furniture seems to be from the 70's and 80's. Its a non smoking room but the ancient recliner had cigarette holes and squeaked like it was going to fall apart. The bedding looks like it was from a cheap vegas hotel room and there was no filling in the pillows. Also some weird noises above the kitchen, holes in the wall, peeling paint and the entire light fixture in the bathroom did not work. Another thing to consider, and its not really the hotels fault, but the town shuts down at 830 and most businesses are closed on Monday and Tuesdays. Dinner locations were very limited and not equipped to handle much of a crowd. Expect to wait for your meal. The good thing is that the view is amazing and you are steps from the beach but for the price I would stay elsewhere. read more

My wife & I stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. It was an outstanding visit. The location of the Tradewinds Motel can't be beat if you like the ocean and beach as it is right on th!e beach. We had an oceanfront unit which we wouild strongly recommend. You can enjoy the view from your room looking out from the slider or on your balcony complete with 2 chairs & small table. The hospitality of Neil, the owner/manager, was fantastic & over the top. Shortly after we checked in, there was a knock on our door -- it was Neil delivering a bottle of champagne, strawberries & a dozen red roses! Very clean & comfortable room. read more

I didn't expect so much for a motel, but pleasantly surprised by the accommodations. a kitchenette stocked with dishes, fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. fireplace, with a log! bed was okay but not great. roomy slept sofa bed and said it was okay. the view of the beach is fantastic and you are only steps away from waling on the beach. everything was very clean and you can't beat the price. read more

This is a nice, clean if dated motel with large rooms some with fireplaces. There is a nicely equipped kitchen if you would like to stay over a long weekend. There are also grills to use. This motel is right on the beach. The oceanfront rooms offer CLEAN kitchenettes with CLEAN dishes and silverware, microwave, fireplace and free Wi-Fi. Every Year we look forward to a delightful stay at the Tradewinds; and have never been disappointed. We have stayed there since the owners purchased it in the early 1990s. Fond memories are never tarnished - beach access, responsive staff and owners (we traveled with an infant this year), well stocked rooms - and other kitchen items are available on request, clean and neat. We would not think of staying in another Motel in the area. We enjoy the beach - it is restful, perfect for long walks, kite flying, exploring the Jetties, a short walk to the town area. It is well situated for Day Trips; and we always feel like home when we return. read more
