This past week I was in Trainland and I want to share what is special about Ken Sr and Ken Jr at this store. I have an autistic son that loves Thomas the tank engine since he was a little boy. He is older now, but he loves trains. Seeing me come into the store with a friend both Ken Sr and Ken Jr took the time to say hello to me and made me feel welcomed. What is special for me is they know about my son and went out of their way to offer me a Bachman catalog and then Ken Jr made me aware of a special Thomas anniversary car that he knew my son would love. As a father with an autistic son this recognition and caring means so much to me and my family and was appreciated by my wife and loved by my son. For those who have a child with special needs that love Trains I highly recommend you find time to order from or visit in person Trainland as we need more stores that actually care about their customers and their family. customer service ladies are rude and incompetent. The website is difficult to navigate and just wants your information to send you more advertising. Prices tend to be higher than other hobby stores. not too many hobby stores left around, but this is one that should be avoided and shop elsewhere. read more

What a space they created!! With full of dreams and hospitality! My son and I visited its Lynbrook store on a Sat morning. We were pleasantly surprised by the pre-recorded voice welcoming us, followed by another greeting from one of the gentlemen at the store. Once inside, the store conjured a profound, yet very convivial historic sort of scent, which we loved. As we explored the store I noticed we were left alone, in the way that we could completely forget the time of the day, including the rest of the world/reality, which must have been designed and intended by the kind and thoughtful gentlemen behind the counters. What blew me away was Paul, who answered all my questions via email on several different occasions after we visited the store, providing me with solutions lovingly and warmheartedly. I bought a train from them for my husband for Christmas. They shipped it in a box with their name all over it and ruined my Christmas surprise for my husband. Then, when I called to discuss, the lady who answered the phone told me she didn't think a box shipping in mid December would be for Christmas and it was my fault. Then she hung up on me. Absolutely my go to place for all things trains and has been for many years now. Trainland is one of the leading companies that are still left in the industry that still make this amazing hobby the forefront of their business. These guys are known all over the country due to their shipping and availability, but they keep a very "old fashion" feel to their sales floor. Not only will the guys give you real world advice and opinions on products and answer all of your questions, but they still adhere to the old fashion "mom and pop" blue collar workers serving the general public. Even the receipts are the old pen and paper itemization, which is just a classic feel and a charming touch. Walking into Trainland is what I'd have imagined it to be walking into a hardware store that sold Lionel in the 50's. This itself is a major compliment and testimony to their business. Every associate is extremely customer focused; your needs WILL be met and attended to promptly even on a busy day. After being mistreated at the Red Caboose hobby shop in Manhattan, i waited for my day off to visit Trainland in the hopes of finding what i wanted and giving another hobby shop a chance at making me feel welcomed, i must say i was very impressed with Trainland. Their was no pressure in them making me purchase something, i roamed free around the store feeling great that i could take my time searching for what i wanted and at the end, got a few things i needed although i couldn't find the train i was looking for, but overall, i was provided excellent service. As a minority, i was not discriminated or rejected service for those who wonder about that subject and as a younger man in a crowd of much older gentleman in this hobby, i felt welcomed. I been coming to this all things model trains hobby landmark in Lynbrook since I was a kid and I absolutely love it. Though it's not huge, the selection of HO, Lionel, N and O gauge trains is amazing. One could find nearly everything they need for a layout right here from trains to switches, landscaping to buildings. It's expensive but if you're an enthusiast for the hobby you won't care much. Only gripe is the service can be a tad gruff and cold. If you're into model railroad then this hobby shop is worth the trek to south western Nassau. Recommended. read more

After many years of passing this place by while shooting by on the LIRR, I finally came here about a couple weeks before Christmas. Store set-up was magical, I've loved trains since I was a kid, and this brought me back to being one. As I walked around the store I found myself piling on the items onto myself, then when I ran out of space, it shifted to my wife. With that being said, we barely broke $200, so it wasn't a tremendous purchase. First issue (not in order of importance), the return policy. It's Christmas folks, an exception should be made. Not everyone shops the day or week before. One of the items I purchased, a metal Polar Express train bridge, was damaged out of the box. Some of the black paint was chipped off. Per the receipt I only had ten days to return this item, and it could be subject to a restocking fee - even though the damage occurred prior to purchase. Why should I pay for that? And how is the 15% logical? There is a plastic Polar Express bridge, as well as a metal one, same size and would take as much effort to re-stock. However because the price is double with the metal, the fee to restock would also be? A complete scam to get additional revenue. If you're going to have a restocking fee please base it on something that makes sense. Second issue, the prices. As I mentioned above, as someone who has loved trains his entire life, but never took up the hobby, I loved being in the store. But be aware you are paying for the experience with inflated prices. A simple search of the items on Amazon showed an increase of 25-40%. I understand a brick and mortar store cannot compete with Amazon, but the difference is generally not this egregious. Third issue, the person behind the counter that assisted us with the purchase. It's 2016, women do more than just shop, and if the credit card is in her name, you should probably hand it back to her, and not to me with a comment that I should control the card. Based on my feel for the fella, probably has not had much experience with women, but that is no excuse. And complaining about how busy the place is, most businesses welcome that. He was just a very grumpy, sarcastic and seemingly miserable person. I'm happy I'm not him. At the end of the day, I'm not currently a hobbyist, but would like to start to dabble. I can't speak for any rare items that they may have, I can tell you that in my experience everything was available on Amazon at a considerably lower price. I'll continue to support local wherever it is reasonable, this is not one of those places. read more

I don't know what that last reviewer is talking about? First of all, he made the purchase at the Brooklyn store and I don't see his review there. Secondly, he expects an email to be read and replied to instantly that night after business hours before he returned the next day? Most businesses of any size don't' reply to emails within 24 hours, much less under that. Third, he should research the items first, not all items are perfect and this could be an expensive hobby. At the very least, if it's such a big purchase for him, open it up at the counter during the purchase. No store can possibly be responsible to open each and every item and inspect the factory's quality and "correct" it. Anyway, sorry for the rant. It upset me that Trainland had only one review and that was it. Trainland has been around for ages and is a family business. I expected more reviews since it is the biggest train store, but I suppose the younger generations on the web still need to be shown the fun of model railroading. I have been coming here my whole life, first with my father, and now on my own. Even if you aren't buying anything, it's still amazing just to see the place and all they have in stock or setup. And you probably will end up buying at least a little bit of something, because with all that magic around you, you want to bring some home. Every purchase I've made here has been a great experience. They have these amazing working layouts, tons of trains and accessories in stock, and lots of hard-to-find items. But my personal favorite is all the vintage tin-plate trains they have that you never see in other stores, only in personal collections. I think anyone into model trains, near or far, should come here and leave some more reviews. This place is legendary and needs a more positive profile on yelp. Trainland is iconic part of Lynbrook. They still play up the "hit" scene that was filmed here from the Sopranos series. There is usually a small play set out for the kiddies to play with while you wait for stuff. Sure, they have all the Thomas the train engines you can ask for, but this is not what the place is all about. This is a serious collectors place to go and a place for the real train hobbyist. I purchased what I thought a new, mint condition Toy electric train set from a their Brooklyn store which proved defective out of the box. I wrote to the an email to which they never responded. Then called the next day and was told by the gentleman who answered the phone "all of the windows on this train particular model" are falling off. 1)This particular set cost almost $350.00, and I dont know any one who wants to spend this much money for defective merchandise, 2) This makes me wonder if they know that then why did they not correct the problem prior to selling them? This leads me to believe they simply don't care and are only interested in taking your money and knowingly sell factory seconds I was also told that I could exchange them for a new set at a location in Long Island which was closer for me and on arrival was told they were not in stock. W hen I asked for a simple refund I was told they don't give refunds. When I purchased then I was told they could be returned for 10 days and exchanged for credit for 30 days. When I asked then do refund me in accordance with their so called policy They asked me if I had charged back my credit card several times to which I replied no and kept saying that if I did so they would press charges for fraud. I have never encountered miserable customer service in a store that sells such high end merchandise, one that treats people as if they are convicted felons and humiliates its customers with interrogation tactics In summary I suggest that if you want to purchase model railroad equipment you bring your hard earned dollars elsewhere read more

**BEWARE RETURNS NOT ALLOWED** While the owner was kind enough to give me a 5% discount as a first time customer. anything you buy is non-refundable for money or store credit once taken out of the package and used. In brief, I bought a Lionel Pennsylvanua Remote Set. After using it for less than an hour, I realized my passion lie in HO Freight. Plus with remote sets you can't use other engines, and the remote makes Lionels "gimmicky." I asked if it could be exchanged and was told "No Refunds." I explained I wanted to exchange it for HO and was willing to accept store credit and pay the difference, but still NO EXCHANGES. Apparently, the owner was not interested in making or keeping a customer. Moreover the salesman "Patrick" acted like he couldn't care less about what I purchased. I only hope that one day the owner has a similar problem and receives a taste of his own medicine. read more

On Saturday, June 2, I went to Trainland to buy the new Lionel New York Central E-8 AA locomotive set. When I got it home and put it on the track it made exactly one loop around my layout before it died completely. A manufacturer defect in the drive engine. By the time I got back to Trainland they were getting ready to close and I was afraid they would tell me to come back on Monday. But instead, the whole team jumped into action to help resolve my problem. They verified the defect in the engine and immediately replaced it with a brand new one, which they also tested before I left. Very impressive customer service, especially considering it was a Saturday afternoon and they were getting ready to close for the weekend. Thank you guys so much! read more

Trainland is the definitive model railroading store in Long Island chock full of neat displays and inspiring inventory. Though the aesthetics of the store are friendly, cheery, and inviting, the salespeople are grumpy, paranoid, and morose. At Trainland it seems everyone is welcome (gawkers, looky-loos, kids treating the store as a jungle gym) except paying customers. For exmple, last week I had to run the gauntlet to purchase one limited edition train they had to get from the back and two $3 g scale elves. First, the sales person seemed incredulous that the elves were only $3 a piece so he had to go and find the items to make sure they were "inventoried" correctly. I guess that happens when everything is so overpriced it seems unbelievable anything could be affordable. As if this wasn't bad enough, when I handed the clerk my credit card he asked for identification like I was buying Hawaiian real estate or opening a bank account in someone else's name. This invasion of privacy served no purpose but to make me feel like a criminal for trying to support a local business and was also bizarre and discriminatory as I did not see any other customer required to show ID. Requiring ID when no other credentials are needed is a violation of the terms of service of almost every credit card issuer so for anyone reading this don't feel compelled to get stopped and frisked by the employees of Trainland. I usually enjoy going to Trainland. They have great prices, and if the Long Island store doesn't have something, they'll order it from the Brooklyn store. Every once in a while, there's a problem and it usually has to do with their sales specials. This last time, they didn't have a something they advertised by email, but one of their guys, Sal I think, was doing right by me and got the Brooklyn store on the phone, and I thought I should get the sale discount because they advertise both stores on the internet and the sale was going to expire at the end of the day. I mean, food stores give you a rain check when they don't have it for you, right? Then Ken came out and told me I couldn't get the discount, and maybe I should order by mail instead. I told him I'm close. I always buy something else when I'm there. Isn't that part of the idea for a sale? Don't have a sale and act like you don't want to sell it at that price.
