They had some good ones, including Vuori and other top brands of quality shorts. Unfortunately, I've spent my limit on fancy gym apparel this year and was looking for more budget options which I couldn't find here. I ended up doing weight lifting in normal shorts, which I'm only now realizing is not a big deal after having done it. Staff was friendly, and there was some sort of shop dog which always makes for an enhanced experience. They had other cool stuff and if you're into outdoor living in Salt Lake, this feels like a spot to check out for sure.

Beau immediately stepped up and said he'd be happy to help. He spent the next hour with me looking over options at all different price points, pointing out the differences between his recommendations for my ability level. He took the time to not only answer all my questions, but educate me on a sport I didn't grow up around. He was patient and considerate, and listen to me as I voiced certain concerns about some of the options. I ended up walking out with new (to me) skis, poles, boots, and a handful of accessories for me and my kids, with zero buyers remorse. Jeremy warmly greeted me and helped address everything I needed. My time there reminded me how the custom boots he fitted for me five years earlier was what made the wonderful time skiing with my son possible. I had gotten back into skiing but was ready to give up after several attempts at finding boots that didn't cause my feet to hurt. I was told to go to the Sport Loft so made an appointment when I was next in SLC. First of all, they employ people who are passionate about the outdoors and who, generally speaking, know what they are talking about. There's no push for corporate outdoorsness--I've often felt like I was chatting with a buddy when talking things over with their staff. Second, I like the location. Just off of State Street near the 33rd South exit of I-15. Nice. Third, they carry some quality stuff. The lightweight, high-quality, not El Cheapo stuff is their specialty, and they do it well. Lots of it is set up or out for display so you can get a good look at what you're after. The biggest reason I'm a fan is those Springbar tents. If you're not familiar, a Springbar tent is the greatest family/Scout troop/group tent known to man. They're immortal. They're super easy to set up. They weigh about a half a ton, but they're a tent you buy and pass down to your kids. For real. A few other bonus features: they have a decent selection of climbing gear, they have a tent repair area, they have random tent material (seam sealer, no-see-um mesh, tent stakes, etc.) and a nice book and map selection. Also, I dig the dog hiking gear and the clothing sections.

For me, it's because I bought the kind of gear in my 20's and 30's that will last forever, and I'm in my 60's now. I have a reason not to do so much backpacking. In the day, the aisles were narrow and the place was filled to overflowing with everything. They had the regular brands, but they had nearly every one of the esoteric, specialty brands too. Today, outside of North Face, nothing in quality sleeping bags. It looks like a place heading out of business. I was there to look for shirts. In the day, they had as much nice outdoor styled clothing as you find total clothing in the big box store. There just wasn't much to choose from today. Walking around you could see the empty walls that held shoes, boots, and similar. I'm so sad. I assume there will always be a market for the car camping gear that Springbar tent owners are going to need. The Springbar tents are great. I don't own one, although I bought both my backpacking and car camping tents there.

He was able to put me in some easy entry/exit Salomon's. While we were waiting for the footbeds to warm up, he was able to find the exact skis I was looking for. It took maybe an hour to complete the transaction. After a few days on the mountain, my ski boots became to loose. Without an appointment, I walked in and explained my situation. The boot fitter went in the back and worked his magic!
