Mr. Tai Tran, you are something special. An ex-Flexsteel upholsterer (of 25 years) with an entrepreneurial zest, charming, helpful, you take great pride in your work and business. So, curious reader, where actually does he do this magic? You will find his tiny shop in an old and dumpy, cream colored, stucco building, with very limited parking in front. And in a rather lousy part of town. Inside, cluttered chaos. Rolls of upholstery fabrics propped up everywhere and work-in-progress furniture (which by the way gave us a clue of what to expect). Many of the rolls are the discontinued leftovers from Flexsteel and Lazyboy fabrics. Nice stuff. Maybe this doesn't sound enticing, but don't let appearances influence your decision. That is because he does beautiful work. And if you find the fabric of your dreams in his little warehouse, you lucky dog, you are talking a substantial savings. We ended up special ordering our fabric from one of his many books for my Mission style couch and matching chair, mostly because I just could not find the right color and texture in stock that matched the couch of my dreams. I know, I know, next time just go with the purple leather. It livens up everything. Honestly, he had many fine fabrics that I would have chosen, if only I hadn't already ordered a difficult to match, brand new chair from another store. And I loved his offer to pick up and deliver my pieces to my home for a whole $50. He drove a good 30 miles RT each time. We loved the firm cushions he used, which we specifically requested. And the cushions are trimmed beautifully, each with a zipper for easy removal. They are made sturdily and look like they could last decades. Two weeks later, the end result? We are all smiles. Beautiful. Makes my furniture look nicer than when it was brand new. I now know where to go when I am ready for my next upholstery job, large or small. read more

He told me he's been in the upholstery business for 30+ years, getting his start working for Steelcase furniture. While visiting my home in Riverside I decided it was time for some badly need improvements for my dining room chairs. My dining room chair cushions were shot. The foam broken down and fabric stained and outdated. Logged into YELP and Trans along with a few others had good reviews. I called several, and Trans was the only one to answer or return my call. I stopped by his shop and was greeted by a very pleasant guy. Tran offers a full range of upholstery services. I selected my fabric, from what seemed like an endless variety. Then when I got an estimate about my couch set, I was very happy with the price. Way better than other reupholstery places I went to. The owner was very honest that holiday season was busy so to come after new years and that he'll honor the price he gave me when I come back. Awesome customer service Update, I came back after a while. Irony in my timing, he told us to come back in a month or so because he has to get surgery. Also we weren't 100% with the fabric options, mostly because I'm picky. He suggested to go to LA, don't pay anything over $16/yard then come back and he'll do the labor. This little hole in the wall is a gem! Tran fixed a leather seat cushion for my sofa for $60. A fair price I believe. He ordered the leather and it was finished in 8 days. It is identical to the other cushions. Tran showed me a wingback chair he had just finished and it looked like a million bucks! Stunning! Now I'm bringing him two antique barrel chairs for reupholstered. He quoted $200 per chair. He spent time in his shop helping me find the best fabric to compliment the one I brought. There is so much fabric. I have several recovering projects including an antique couch/chair, ottomans and curtains. I needed several samples for all this. I told him in advance. He wouldn't let me cut samples myself, so, after the 6th cutting, he lost his temper and told me I was trying to come in and control things and that I required too many samples. So, I left without throwing the samples in his face because I need them. L.A. fabric stores will let you cut samples yourself. Heck, they've even got scissors hanging on the displays. I regret complimenting him on his jacked-up indoor Koi pond. read more

I have dealt with Tran's for over five years and never had a problem until my Oct/Nov 2015 experience. I had a Lazy Boy Recliner recovered and after I picked it up and brought it home was not happy with the job that was done. Apparently I gave up my right to complain the moment I walked in his business because I was told "who did I think I was to complain about his work, he didn't make any money dealing with me" and the barrage went on. When I asked him what he does when he receives services he isn't happy with, I was told to get out of his shop as I was making him mad; he was suppose to put cover back on seats he made for me at which point he threw the cushions at me and said he wasn't going to do it. I will no longer recommend him to friends and family as no one deserves to be treated the way I was. read more

Mr. Tran has just completed a recovering of my eight padded dining room chairs, absolutely excelled results. I needed a fabric that resisted the cats sharpening their claws on the fabric; I believe the problem has been solved. Even though he had hundreds of fabrics available in his shop, of course I needed to order one from the sample swatches. That put only a week's delay in the project. He and his nephew came to the house to pick up the chairs and delivered them a few days later. The price was very fair and the service perfect, I would use Mr. Tran again if needed.
