First the dog is adorable. Maybe not the most professional thing to have a dog barking and running around, but it's an independent store. The couple is elderly and hard of hearing. The man is nice enough, but they are very slow moving in the store; to get a quote it took an hour. The woman is kind of aggressive and very pushy. She is money hungry and bossy. A bit like an Alpha personality type. It's an uncomfortable vibe communicating with you because she's real sassy and gruff. She quoted me $65 for an alteration that I took elsewhere and was quoted $35. Her shop is kind of messy and musky. She scares me not so sure I'll be going back again. She also was complaining to me about another customer ahead of me and I found that to be unprofessional. read more

She sent me to get my pattern digitized with the wrong information and she couldn't tell me how long it would take her to complete the job. If I could leave zero stars I would. Terrible costumer service to begin with. I opened the door and there was an unfriendly dog barking at the front door and because the dog wouldn't stop I didn't know if it was okay to enter or not. It took way too long for the owner to calm him down. The old man was extremely rude and I immediately felt uncomfortable, his wife I'm assuming asked what I needed and I first thought she would be nicer but also rude and did not want to help me when all I needed was for my daughter to be measured. She led me to the back of her store where there was measuring tape and told me it's $5 and that I could measure her myself. They are $1-2 at hobby lobby but because I was already there I did want to buy it but was told only cash and I said I didn't have cash and literally wanted to run out of there. The Sewing Lab also offers machine maintenance by a dedicated sewing machine technician, Ted. This is a great place to purchase a sewing machine. Gaye will sit down with you and show you how to set it up and get started. That's something you can't get from an online retailer. Beginner and experienced sewists can sign up for personal or group lessons. (Thinking of giving someone a sewing machine as a gift? Gift the machine + a set of lessons.) These are old-school lessons where you get personal attention and critique to get better. The lessons are priced commensurate to being trained by an expert and receiving individual feedback. It's this feedback that is really special: you don't get that from watching videos online or from less attentive teachers. If you can afford it, it is a special opportunity to really learn how to sew from the ground up. Ted does a top notch job doing sewing machine repairs and maintenance. He is honest and reliable with a knack for figuring out what's troubling your machine. Gaye does a careful job on alterations. During one-on-one lessons you'll sometimes get a chance to learn from her in action. You come to appreciate the difference between a carefully done alteration and the shortcuts that other tailors might make. If you want something done properly, you take it to Gaye. You'll know that she is the one who personally took care of your garment. There's a turn around time and alterations are priced accordingly, but that's because people keep coming back to her for her reliability. There really aren't shops like this in most places. The closest ones that I've seen are boutiques in expensive cities which charge more than Gaye and don't offer nearly the same technical expertise. She's very rude, impatient, and boy is this seemingly cute old lady a money hungry woman. Very very very pushy about money. All of the supplies and patterns you have to pay separately from the classes, looking into other sewing classes now and it was an absolute highway robbery with the price. ($220 a month everything needed is separate) I came to one(she makes you pay for two classes up front) and it was NOT for me. She belittles the people in her class, I'm assuming she took on more than she can chew with her recent popularity online, and was flustered, condescending, snappy, all in all not pleasant and made you feel unwelcome. I asked for a refund on my pre paid second class (there is a sign stating if you let her know a week in advance or if she cancels the class it's the only time you can be refunded) she refused my refund stating it doesn't adhere to classes...? Definitely not for me, I'm sure others have had better experiences but my experience was not a good one whatsoever. Will not be returning or recommending. read more

I had an old Viking machine I loved. Took it to a well known sewing repair shop. They told me it was too old, and not repairable. Mentioned it to Gaye. She said bring it in, let them look at it. Really bad experience. Went there by referral from a local store that had a good relationship with them. I was greeted by a nice man and was told Gaye was teaching a class and it would be a minute. When I told her what I needed, which was one ACU name plate with Velcro for my ACU uniform with the word VETERAN on it, she made it seem like I was an imposing entity. I said I need it latest by Thursday latest. I even said if you cannot do it just tell me. She said she was busy but she would try to do it. She told me to pay her and if I was not back with the $20 she would charge me more money. Needless to say I left and didn't return. This is a small family owned business. I wasn't aware of this place until I had to look for elastic for face masks I've been making during the Covid-19 pandemic. The service is friendly but it can be slow even when there is not many people in the store. They do not offer more modern fabric. Most of what I saw was significantly older type of fabric. They do sell new and old sewing machines and they also count with services that can fix sewing machines with issues. Overall the service is friendly and good. I had ZERO background in sewing and decided to sign up for Gaye Marie's beginning sewing classes. I am so happy I did! Her work is very professional, detail oriented and precise. She translates her skills to her students. Our class is composed of folks from all different ages young and old and she provides attention and support to each student equally. She can be quite tough and to some people might come off as a bit harsh, but believe me she does it with the best intention to make sure you learn how to do it the best way possible. She has high expectations but she is also incredibly patient and caring when it comes to showing you how to avoid mistakes, fix your mistakes, and making sure you understand how to do something. I will for sure be taking the Intermediate class once it begins and I am looking forward to booking private sessions with her in the future to work on other skills. Also, her shop is a one stop for all sewing needs. She pretty much has everything you can think of including different types of sewing machines, sergers, embroidery machines, accessories, fabrics, etc. They also service and repair machines. I had recently damaged some of my working clothing essentials and was searching for a sewing place, so I went on yelp to find some local places and as you can expect, Gaye Marie's Sewing lab came out. I called and she was more than eager to accept and fix my vest. She took a look at it and began working on it. She was really nice and very helpful and she even went over the mistakes that were done with the threads previously. When I came back to pick it up it was like if nothing ever happened to my vest, I couldn't even tell the fixes. She definitely is great at her profession and I'm glad I found her locally. First I'd like to state that I came into this mom and pops place thinking that their knowledge and expertise would be the best for assisting me in my purchase of my very first sewing machine. I gave her my trust and she sold me on a second hand machine to which she had serviced and was in great working condition. She even started teaching me how to work it. I didn't realize how old the machine was until after I brought it home. I found the similar sewing machine for a less price that included more accessories. I also learned that replacement parts if ever I needed them weren't being made for the machine anymore and aren't easy to find. So I went back to the store, and instead of wanting to return the machine for a full refund I asked for some of the money back after showing her that I found it for much less with more accessories she replied with no. I feel cheated and that she shouldn't have sold me the machine knowing that the machine is so old and replacement parts weren't easy to get and for the price she sold it to me for. I feel that she just wanted to get rid of the machine that was obsolete and make some of her money back that she lost when she traded one of her other machines for it. She's nice and very well knowledge in her craft. However she saw the word sucker on my face. read more

Gaye did a wonderful job on my bridesmaid dress. When she was pinning up the part of my dress that needed tailoring she noticed that the under layer of my 2 layered dress was stitched crooked so the dress twisted around me in a weird way. She fixed the original stitching and tailor in less than 10 days. She is fantastic. She does everything form teaching all types of classes to actually fixing sewing machines. I had very basic (practically non existent TBH) sewing skills, the few garments I had attempted to construct over the years were not great. I usually ended up asking my mom to do my sewing if there was work to be done (she offered to teach me but I found it easier to just pawn it off on her). My mom was taking quilting and embroidery classes at the Sewing Lab and the things she was creating were just gorgeous! I signed myself up for the beginning sewing class, and I've learned so much already. I'm now halfway through the intermediate class. Gaye Marie taught herself a heap of skills all on her own when she was younger, then she took classes over the years and worked as a very sought after professional seamstress. She had a lot of people asking her to teach them, which led to her opening her shop. Basically she has a lifetime of experience that she wants to share with anyone willing to learn. I am learning to cut, measure, lay out patterns, sew/construct garments, etc. We look at the instructions first, then she explains everything and shows me ways to do it more efficiently and intelligently. We don't move on till I understand. I now know why my previous attempts at sewing never lined up right, or pulled to the side, or hung all wrong. Gaye Marie has a heart of gold, keep that in mind as her manner of speaking is very no nonsense. She doesn't mess around. If you go to her for advice about machines she will not pressure you to purchase. I have seen her spend an hour with a customer showing them everything they could possibly want to know, then tell them to think about it and call if they have more questions. She can custom make almost any patch you can think of, and can alter clothing, curtains, etc. Make sure you bring CASH as she requires payment in advance. If you pay for the lessons she will teach you darn near anything you'd want to learn. I ended up buying a new machine and she spent all morning teaching me how to use it (the lesson comes with the purchase). Again, we didn't move on till she was sure I understood. Can't recommend Gaye Marie's Sewing Lab enough. I hope that I have encouraged at least one person to try learning to sew. I am 47 years old - proof that it's never too late to learn. read more
