I stopped by the store on a weekday, had a key copied without any trouble, and scheduled for someone to come to my home to re-key. The soonest appointment available was one week out, and that worked fine for me. I picked out some specialty keys while I was in the store, and they were brought to my home with the locksmith when he arrived a week later. I went to 2 other places to get a copy of a rather funny looking key made- neither Raphael lumber or Home Depot could match it. I went to Transbay because of the ratings on Yelp. I have to say I was not disappointed. We went in with a question of how much it would be to replace or disabling the locking mechanisms on seven interior doors in our house. We just bought the house and no keys were left for the interior doors. Their answer was $0. Not because the work was free of course but because there was no work needed. Apparently all the locks are 'privacy' locks meaning they can be opened with anything from a knife to flat blade screw driver to a car key. All you need is something to slide in the keyhole and turn. Then POP the door is unlocked. Where they could have easily taken us for work on seven locks they were honest and let us know none was necessary. We will be going back for any lock or key work we have in the future for sure. read more

This place was a great surprise for me. When our 60 year-old front door lock broke, I was worried it was going to cost a ton of money to fix, and I didn't want to just replace it because it's a beautiful brass lock. Quick response, friendly and great work. Front lock jammed up after many years. None of the keys worked. Called in the PM and left a message. Tony called back at 8:15 the next morning. Superb & Professional Service! I had a really weird linkage problem with my car door. After I drove it to Transbay I locked myself out by accident! These guys tried hard to help me even though I stopped by without an appointment, so they didn't have a special tool that was on a truck. Even without the tool they still tried to help me when they didn't have too. It wasn't long before the truck returned and helped me get back in my car. I have used them a couple of times and have been very happy. The landlords/owners of my building told me I HAD to use Transbay when I first needed to change my locks and I'm really glad they did. One thing everyone should know is that these guys are busy. They're local, they have to come to you in order to do a lot of work so you may need to book in advance. That said, when I've needed them they came out the next day. The first time, replacing 2 locks was done quickly, efficiently and for a fair price. The second time I called I needed a touch keypad installed on my back door at work and they ordered it and came out and to replace install it. It wasn't cheap but it was affordable enough and they did a great job. The actual price of the product/s are not high but the labor can be and I do understand that. There was a third time where they came out and there was a slight miscommunication but all I had to do was call and they immediately made it right!! Thanks Transbay!! Great service and prices. I'm a property manager, so we use them dozens of times a year for normal lock work, usually at their location but sometimes on site. Never a problem They also have opened a combination lock on a safe for me and produced two keys (including one obsolete tubular key) for an antique slot machine after the original key were lost. I thought that would be impossible, or at least take a lot of time. They did it all in one day at a very reasonable price. They are simply the best in Marin County. read more

The worst. After I explained to my property management company that they needed to change out a lock, the repairman showed up without a new lock. The repairman did not have the correct information about what he was doing when he showed up. But the kicker was when I told him I requested a new front door lock, he told me "oh that lock is really hard to change"... and then suggested a lame quick fix. So my first experience with this company resulted in a lack of communication followed up by a lame excuse. How much faith would you have in a contractor who said "oh that is really hard ...". Then I found out they wanted over $700 to change out the front door lock. Which to me said "I don't want to do what you are requesting, so I will charge you 4x what it should cost." Thank goodness there are MANY other companies out there to have this work done. Pathetic. My response to Tony's comments below: That is your opinion of the lock. The door knob on the outside is useless since you have to use the force of turning the key to open the door. I simply don't like it. I don't care what you think of it's quality. I have to use it every day. If you didn't like the doorknob you use every day, you would change it and not think much of somebody who tells you of it's "quality". The point of my review was to illustrate the failure of your communication with the property management company and the insensitivity you and your locksmith displayed by emphasizing the quality of the lock over my desire to change it. You could have made this into a win, win by offering to change the lock and perhaps had a bit of business from this situation. You or your employee could have offered to communicate with the property management company on my behalf or the building ownership and facilitate the change I wanted. But you and your employee did not do that which speaks volumes about your opinion and interest in your clientele. read more

Good place to go if you want to get ripped off. Quote me $15 for a kwikset 5 inch deadlatch (retails for $12.97 at Homedepot) on the phone. The price changed to $29 when I got there and it was a used part (out of box - the price written on with marker, no screws). Then they charged me an extra 3% for using a credit card. I got Transbay's voice mail when I called on a Saturday morning which said that outside of regular business hours Monday through Friday, I was to leave a message and they would return my call on Monday. I went here the other day to have three sets of keys made. The man was super-friendly and went to work right away. I pulled out my book, figuring it might take him 15 minutes or so, and he laughed at me and said "you're not going to need that." Sure enough, about 30 seconds later, he was finished. Myself and other legitimate local locksmiths are all up against the countless ' local ' locksmith services advertising on the internet that if you research a bit closer expose themselves as anything BUT local . I have heard the horror stories from costumers who have been quoted low prices only to be gouged at time for payment . Many folks have been left with damaged locks or very cheap replacements . Transbay is NOT one of those company's .They are truly local and have been for many years.
