Absolute terrible customer service. I have been trying to solve an Amsec Safe problem and was referred to Transbay by the safe company. Greg is the person at Transbay that handles safes, but Greg is not only never in the office, he does not return phone calls. Ever. I have tried unsuccessfully for over a month to reach him with repeated phone calls and voice mails. He does not respond. So, I cannot comment on whether Transbay does good work, because I can't get past a simple phone call. Will not waste my time any further and will look elsewhere. read more

After getting unanimous recommendations for Transbay on Nextdoor.com, imagine my surprise at not finding them AT ALL on Yelp under "Locksmiths near San Rafael"! And they've apparently been serving Marin successfully since 1964. So you gotta wonder... Anyway, I called a little after noon today to have a door lock re-keyed. I told them it wasn't urgent, but they had Dave here within two hours anyway (mind you, on a FRIDAY AFTERNOON!). Dave was friendly, professional and competent. He was done in less than an hour. The two new locks on my door work fine with my old key. I can't really comment on the price, because I hadn't hired a locksmith in over 20 years, and don't know the going rate--but this house call cost me $235 for parts and labor. read more

I've stopped in to have keys cut a few times and they've always been friendly, really fast and very reasonably priced. I've also never had to take a key back because it didn't work - something I cannot say of OSH, HD and my shoe repair shop in downtown SR. This was the first time I had to have them come to the house. I called in the morning, he thought they could get someone out the next day but when I told him the key was stuck in the lock, he said they'd do their best to make it the same day. Mike called less than an hour later and said he was 10 minutes away. He came to the door with a screwdriver! Not a bunch of toolboxes and electric tools. He diagnosed the problem immediately and dismantled the lock like he'd done it 1M times. He was on his way in 28 minutes and I'll bet the locks good for another 20 years. I'll never call another locksmith as long as I live near Transbay. read more

Love these guys!!! Had a problem with a theft lock on my laptop. Lost the key so I sliced the cable (pretty easy, made me wonder why I used it at all), anyway I digress. Took the laptop with the bolt-lock attached to another locksmith in San Rafael. Only one person there and he couldn't help me (didn't have a pic the right size), only suggestion was to refer me to Transbay :) Likewise, they didn't have a pic, but said they would CAREFULLY drill the lock so that it could be removed without damage to the computer. Asked me to leave it and it would be ready in 90 minutes. Received a call in less than an hour to come pick it up, and they didn't charge me for the service! Nada! I need to purchase a safe and plan to do so right after the holidays. I'm going back there to make the purchase decision. They have a great selection. So last week I broke they key to the lock for my boat's companionway, brought the lock in expecting to pay couple hundred buck to either replace the lock or rekey the cylinder. But the guy at Transbay said he thought he could create a new key using the two broken pieces I had, and sure enough he did! Just like McGyver! And the total cost: $7! Prior locksmiths (two) abandoned all hope on fixing the Bargman L100 front door lock on my 45-yr old Airstream trailer. Transbay and Tony not only willingly tackled the job, they worked with me to use various web reference materials (including the original 1963 US patent drawings) to replace and substitute missing and failed pieces from the ancient mechanism. For this, they charged a remarkably reasonable price and now the lock works nicely. They are the very model of "under promise, over deliver", and I'd consider no other Marin locksmith: 5 stars. read more

Wanted them to come advise on enhancing my front door security and add another kind of lock. The guy shows up and has no clue, thought he was installing a 2nd deadbolt lock. Asks me what I want, he ends up installing some cheapo $8 lock that you could probably buy at the dollar store. Charges me over $100 for it, could have done it myself. Was there for 30 min, starts telling me he's charging me less than he should. Right, bud. read more
