Highly recommend! Let's just get that out the way. I had such an amazing time I don't know where to begin. I am easily motion sick and not a fan of heights and my first attempt at jumping scared the daylight out of me but I did it and went back to try again. By the third jump I was excited to jump and wanted really hard to get the trick we were being taught. By the end of the class I felt like I was on my way to leveling up! Service The teachers were so patient and understanding, they went over and over everything until we were all comfortable. You are assigned a trainer and two additional people assist with teaching. Liz, Sampson and Isaiahs to be exact were so amazing I had to name them. Only two out of our group had flew before so we needed all their attention and they provided it! They encouraged us to come back and even reminded us we get a discount if we register within the 24 hr time period. Cost I was very pleased for the experience we received in comparison to the price. Very reasonable imo and very convenient when it came to scheduling dates. Location Located in Navy Yard suprsigly I was able to nab a spot directly in front and never had to look around. FLYING TRAPEZE It's pretty intimidating to climb all the way up to the top and stand on that platform and jump for the first time. But you get used to it after awhile because depending on the size of the class, you could end up jumping 6-8 times. Toward the end I was getting really tired and my arms were feeling like jello and wanted to give out. When you go for the swinging catch you really have to stretch your body and reach for the other person. Unfortunately, I didn't make the connection but with a few more sessions I feel that will be the natural next step. It's exhilarating and you leave feeling like a bad ass. BEGINNER SILKS CLASS This class was a lot harder than it looks - it does require some upper body strength, hand grip and balance. The instructor was very encouraging and demonstrated each move step by step. I only took one class but I'd be interesting in taking a series once it gets a little warmer out. I would recommend wearing long sleeves and pants because your body will rub with a lot of friction against the silks. I'm excited to continue to take both classes again and some of their additional unique offerings like the lyra (aerial hoop), trampoline and maybe even juggling classes! read more

I swear it's not peer pressure that I'm posting this five star review...though all the others seem to have followed suit. My 12 year old daughter has done parties, individual sessions, and camp at this place and it has been a-maze-ing!!! The staff and the facility are top notch. While it was terrifying to watch her fly through the air, I knew deep down that she was perfectly safe. The instructors could NOT have been more supportive and encouraging of all of the participants and the coaching was really excellent. It was amazing to watch the members of each session progress through their tricks and (more often than not) ultimately succeed in their efforts. (un)Fortunately, I'm too heavy (by two pounds) to try this myself or else I know my daughter would endlessly be harassing me to get up there too. Also, fwiw, this is an amazing workout. Came here on July 4 for a 2-hour trapeze class and it was so much fun!! This was my first time doing this and all the instructors (Jill, Mills, and Daniel) were extremely friendly, helpful, and supportive With the apparatus so high up from the ground, safety is paramount, and the instructors were clear about safety rules and always watching; I felt safe the entire session. We first got an overview of the trick we were going to try - knee hang with backflip dismount - then got a quick demo, and then we were off! The first time jumping off the board was definitely a bit intimidating but I got the hang of it in the next few tries. The instructors gave solid, actionable feedback after each turn. We ended off with a partner catch by one of the instructors. It was really cool to see how much everyone progressed from the first to last round. read more

I had the best time here celebrating my birthday and would recommend it to just about anyone that's down for a little adrenaline rush (but is still slightly risk averse or a scardy cat.) While a visit here was long overdue, it was everything I hoped it would be and more. I had hoped to embark on this adventure a long time ago, but due to the weekend popularity and my sometimes irregular schedule I kept pushing it off. So when I took off work on a Monday to hang out with my sister on my birthday, this was the perfect mid-day activity. What I loved most about the school, was that safety was first. There was never a moment where I felt the instructors and staff lost sight of that, so make sure to listen up and respect the rules. I also really appreciated how warm and encouraging the instructors are, always provided positive and constructive feedback after every "run." Although I grew up very involved in competitive diving and gymnastics, the first time up the ladder was a tad unnerving. It's a little higher up than it looks and initially, the wobbly ladder feels foreign. But once you put trust in your instructor and have faith in the process, most of the physical stuff comes pretty easily. In fact, I was pretty boosted to see how much you can actually pull off during your first, two hour session. Also, I was incredibly excited about how many opportunities we had due to the small class size. By the time I had a chance to sit down, talk with my sister and chill out from my rush, it was time for me to get into queue and start my climb back up. Overall, I would recommend this to just about everyone in good physical health with just a tad of athleticism and courage. Otherwise, it may not be the perfect adventure for everyone. read more

Trapeze School New York is one reason why Forbes magazine rated DC "the coolest city in America." It's tucked away in Navy Yard by many restaurants and bars so you can make a day of it. My wife and I came here as part of a LivingSocial deal. Even though they have an indoor set up and an outdoor one, we were indoor the entire time. I always thought acrobatics was just the swing thing you see at the circus but it also entails stunts on a giant trampoline and learning tricks in long silk pieces from the ceiling. After we did those things, we then each got to try the actual bar twice. The staff are super friendly and walk you through everything. If you're looking for a unique great date idea, this is your place! Warning: You don't have to be super fit to do this but I wouldn't do it if you haven't exercised in a decade. I want to give a huge shout out to the staff at the trapeze school. My little sister (13) decided to have her birthday party here so naturally as the big sis (31) I had to participate . Especially given I was the only adult who decided to give this a try lol I got up there to jump off the board and let me tell you my fear of heights was reallyyyy getting the best of me. After I managed to try it, and landed on the net crying my eyes out haha (hello embarrassment) I was intent on not giving it another try. The staff were so patient, encouraging, and actually helped me in overcoming a fear of heights. Did I cry my first time in front of a bunch of teenagers who totally had this down - yes lol but the staff got me up the ladder again and giving in a go for round 2 and I did it. I don't think I could've done it again without them and I'm truly grateful for them. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to try whether you have the fear or not they really took their time, gave clear instructions, and even though I was petrified lol it was a really fun time for the kids! read more

I went to TS yesterday with two of my girlfriends. When you register, you can choose if you want to do the indoor trapeze or the outdoor trapeze. We opted for indoor because we didn't want to make fools of ourselves outdoors. The staff is great ... super friendly, encouraging, and fun. They put you in a harness (that is tighter than a military haircut), give you a VERY quick rundown of how to jump off of the platform, and then you go. We were expecting some sort of formal orientation, but they just throw you into the fire ... which is probably the best thing to do or you might chicken out. During the first class, you will learn how to swing, fall properly, hang by your knees, and, if you're really talented (which I was not), do a catch with one of the pros. The next morning, you will hurt (who knew the inside of an elbow could be sore?) and have bruises in places you didn't even realize you hit. Bottom line ... 2 hour trapeze class = $51 Registration fee = $20 Flashdrive with images = $22.50 Seeing the terrified look on my face in the first photo and being able to compare it to the last photo where I am being caught in the air by a man with crazy pants = f'n priceless! It is expensive, but completely worth it. There are three teachers to assist throughout the class and they were all amazing. I have a fear of heights and didn't even think I would be able to do it. You can tell that the teachers are used to people that are freaked out and they completely know how to handle the situation with ease. A big thank you is in order to Mandy, Megan, and Donovan because I really don't think I would have gone up that ladder without them, even with all the safety harnesses. Each class is mixed levels. The class I was in had three people that were new and six people who had been taking classes there for a while. A teacher talks to the newbies in the beginning and explains everything that you are going to do. Seemed like everyone had six tries. The first two I put my legs over the bar let my hands go to swing then just dropped down to the net, the second two I put my legs over the bar then did a backflip dismount, the last two I put my legs over the bar then was caught by the man in crazy pants. You do not have to do all of that though. One new person just swung back and forth for all of her tries. There is no pressure to do anything that you do not feel comfortable with and the teachers have a good gauge of figuring out what you are up for. After your first class they offer a special of buy your next class get the third free. I had to resist since it is just too expensive to be something I do often. There were people in my class that go twice a week. The place has a motto - "Forget fear. Worry about the addiction." And at that price you better be worried about getting addicted, since it basically costs more than being a crack addict, though of course much better for your body. The teachers were in amazing shape. This is definitely not an easy thing to do and I was really sore for at least a couple days. It seemed like I had used muscles I didn't even know I had. Classes are offered in flying and static trapeze, aerial silks, trampoline, and a few other options. They have an indoor and outdoor trapeze set up. I took an outdoor class and it was amazing. Perfect weather, great view of the water when you are on the platform, and if you go on a Friday night in the summer you can hear the concert that is being played over in Yards Park. I took the class on the last day of my twenties and I don't think I could have thought of anything better to do. It was the perfect way to usher in a new decade, albeit a little sore. read more

This new, modern structure for the amazing TSNY-DC is inviting, clean, well-light, bright and cheery. When you walk into the building, you will see so much going on, and you will want to take part in all of them! In one corner, you will see some juggling with balls, rings, and pins. In another area, you will see trampoline jumping, flipping and bouncing that looks like more fun than I could imagine having on a home or backyard trampoline. Then there's the silks, folks hanging from the ceiling working on their form while precisely wrapped into long stretches of material. Finally, of course, you will be drawn, like me, to the static trapeze and the flying trapeze. After all, it is called the Trapeze School of New York! The classes fill up on the weekends and evenings, so be flexible when scheduling, schedule in advance, or just try your luck. Group parties can be accommodated here, because really, why wouldn't you want to fly for your party? The prices vary based on the class, from trampoline, to juggling, to conditioning, to silks, to static trapeze, to flying trapeze, as well as based on time of day and day of the week. It is such fun, when you sign up for one, you will want to sign up for another. So you think about it, and you sign up. Before you know it, you're regularly attending it every couple of weeks, because it is a skill that you can attain! The instructors and veteran flyers here are incredibly patient, focused, artistic and friendly. If you are unsure, you can have one on one discussions right before each time you fly and/or right after. You can chat with them about your concerns, and receive detailed feedback. The focus is on your skills, of course, but safely ensuring that you can practice them. There is also a monitor that records your flying, so you can have feedback with them while watching what they saw. It amazes me how much they notice when I have felt that I have no idea what is going on, maybe because there are so many nuances and directions, that focusing on more than 2 points of instruction is difficult for me. This is why I am happy to return to work on the skills. If you feel that you need flexibility and strength, well, sure, they help, but really, if you just listen to their directions, the instructors will make sure you can be successful with the flying trapeze. Arrive early if new, so you can get a bit more background (15 minutes). Parking is a cinch, as long as there isn't a huge event nearby (Nationals!). Metro is relatively close (Navy Yard). Wear comfortable clothing that doesn't drag and hang. Bring a water bottle, preferably with water. You can change here, and fill your water bottle, but if you are already ready, it's easier for you to start stretching and get started sooner. Be patient, as you have a line order to follow. The class of 2 hours for flying trapeze will generally allow you about 7-12 tries at a trick or two. The key is to just listen to the "strong man" below, who guides your lines and gives you direct cues on what to do and when. Listen and have fun! The first half of the class is a skill you still wish to work on from last time, or a new skill if they feel you are ready to learn something new. Sometimes, you can work on two tricks. Then, the second half of class allows you to try a catch trick - remember your catch hands! Watch the instructor on the trapeze across from the platform, but more importantly, listen, as he will provide key instructions for you. Everyone on staff is on point, and it's incredible how helpful and focused they are on ensuring you succeed. If you try this for the first time and don't work out your shoulders or hang from bars, you may be sore in the shoulders/ back and legs (calves?), but you will be happy to go back. This is so unique, it's difficult to review. And I have nothing to compare it to BUT it's thrilling and totally worth trying. One minute you can fly the air with the greatest of ease and the next minute you can learn how to juggle. Beginner to advance classes trapeze classes offered, usually lasting about 2 hours. Fun birthday outing with the better half. We signed up for the Friday morning trapeze class that takes place outdoors. To say we had a blast would be an understatement. The instructors (DJ and Rex) are super friendly, attentive and encouraging. This was our first time taking the class and while we were excited to do it, we were definitely a little nervous about being able to complete the stunts. But after three turns we were already doing backflip dismounts! I was particularly pleased by how many attempts each of us got during the class and after each turn the instructors provided excellent coaching in order to improve the next time. The experience was super fun our class had participants of all ages (I think the youngest was 7 years old! She was super cute!!) I can't wait to go back and learn more stunts. read more

Brenda's review is dead on. I don't know that I need to expound on anything but my personal experience of the activity. I have a serious fear in life of heights but I've been taking strides to overcome it. I went sky diving last summer and now trapeze. I think I screamed to the top of my lungs on the first jump. I didn't know I could hold my own weight. The fear of climbing that ladder and swinging from the pole was frightening. But after the first time, I got more and more comfortable. The staff and other flyers were absolutely amazing. The professionalism made me feel that much more comfortable.We all got to go a fair amount of times to fly in 2 hours. By the end of the session, I did a knee tuck and Remi caught me from the pole on the opposite end. This is definitely out of the norm and I will be returning!! By day I run a hospital, I use the word "run" loosely, but either way it's a stressful job and some days I want to run away and join the circus. I like to eat, and I clearly don't have any discernable, marketable circus skills, so this keeps my runaway hospital administrator urges in check. Oh Trapeze, what an exilarating thrill! Sign here, sign here, listen to the mandatory safety briefing, climb a REALLY tall ladder (you are strapped in or on or up), stand on the platform and have carabiners hooked on the safety harness, a Listo, a Hep, and a little jump later and you are flying through the air with the greatest of ease while the instructors yell constructive correction and instruction. I loved every second of every flip and turn and flop, yes I flopped. Despite my flops, I was able to do a catch which was a small victory given the necessary perfect timing between you and the catcher. Score! The school has more than just an outdoor rig - they have an indoor trapeze along with a large trampoline and aerial silks which will come in very handy in the winter, but during summer with a blue, blue sky - oh be still my beating heart! The website is very informative and easy to navigate - the school and the instructors were all very professional. All and all, a wonderful class, even though I was a little peeved about the $20 first timers fee - seriously, everyone has to start somewhere. A must do/try for everyone! read more

Who knew there was such a thing as a trapeze school? Who knew there was one in DC? While I have no plans to take lessons -- they said there is a couple in their late 60s who take lessons! -- it was very cool just watching. Looking through my past reviews, I realize that I used to be extremely witty and funny, but in the past year, I've gotten really lazy and boring. I'm going to try to remedy that with this review. I'm no stranger to circus schools- I've taken trapeze once (loved it) and a series of trampoline classes (one dislocated rib and one sprained-type neck later, I decided it wasn't for me). What I hadn't yet tried was aerial silks. I had first tried aerials with silks elsewhere and was extremely frustrated with the instruction and my ability. To be quite honest, although I'm pretty strong, my upper body strength isn't what it could be. Or rather, I have such a fat ass that my arms simply can't haul myself up what looks to be a mile of silk. Although my ass is still fat and my arms are still weak, the instruction here was much improved over my previous experience. I learned a better way to wrap my feet and haul myself up, and because the classes were smaller, I was able to learn many more new tricks than at Urban Evolution. Many, many more tricks. By my second class, I was already doing a drop. The prices are a little steep- classes can add up. Buying multi-class packages does decrease the prices per class, but it still is a hit on my budget. Being able to show off my Spidey-skill is worth it, though. read more

I feel like a limp noodle, my hands are blistered and my arms are all scratched up, but damn if that wasn't one of the most fun evenings I've had in a while. I went from being scared to climb a ladder to jumping off a platform and hanging by my knees, arms stretched backwards. I was thisclose to completing a successful catch. I have video to prove I actually faced my fear of heights and tried something few people have done in their lives. It's an exhilarating experience with amazingly knowledgeable and supportive people -- Mike, Everett and Brian were the perfect team. TSNY is moving their location near the Nationals stadium in mid-October, so now would be the time to try out a class closer to the heart of DC. $50 for a life-changing experience? This place really isn't very well organized. We showed up, and both of us were first timers. We got about 5 minutes of instruction on what to do. The guy put the harness on me but didn't latch me on to the locks when it was my turn to go. He wasn't even paying attention, so I had to ask him if I was doing it correctly. The stair going up to the platform is REALLY wobbly, and I almost lost my shit going up. I'm scared of heights, and this was not my fucking day at the trapeze school. Did anyone care? No. Hey, I don't expect to get babysat, but this is your job, chief, so you may wanna at least tell me how to secure myself into the locky-thingys. I'm up at the platform, and I have immediate spaghetti arms. I feel like I may perhaps die/pee/have a heart attack up there. I finally "launch" (ummmm I'm 100% positive that's not the right word) and it's brief seconds of heaven. I attempt to hook my legs up on the pole and TOTALLY and completely fail. I give up and drop. I try again. This time I succeed. I am awesome. I should join the circus. After going about 6 times, I become hopelessly bored and decide I want to skip my turn. I skip one turn, and then jump in again in the next round. Some "regular" at this school gets really bitchy with me, and yells about the "lineup something or other." I consider challenging her to a duel, but think better of it. Her bitchiness ruins my trapeze boner. I attempt to lock hands with one of the dudes towards the end of the lesson and come REALLY close, but somehow still manage to convince myself that I was badass as a first timer. This is really good exercise when you're doing it wrong. And I must've been doing it REALLY WRONG since I was in some serious pain for about a week afterwards. It was an okay thing to cross off your bucket list, but not something I would try again. It's way too expensive, and the people really weren't very pleasant. read more

Reading all of these 5-star reviews, I'm not at all surprised. This is an awesome place and so fun-- as long as you're with the right group. The trapeze itself is super fun and TSNY makes it super safe, and the outdoor classes are especially good-- so long as it's not 100 degrees outside. You will definitely learn some new skills and feel pretty good about yourself when the class is over. The only gripe I have is with the people. The instructors are kind of cold. Some might say this is just professionalism, but I don't think a little bit of encouragement and kindness is unprofessional. Generally, the staff is ok, but the snark and lack of encouragement is a little biting when you're already nervous. Coupled with that, some of the people that will be in your group (unless, of course, you fill the class with your friends) will also have an impact on your experience. While most of the people in my group were awesome, there were some that were very experienced (or so they claimed) that were less than pleasant. There was always a comment or an eye roll if someone took too long going up the ladder or if someone lagged a bit when it was their turn. But, you'll get that anywhere, I suppose. Overall, the experience was good and I'd probably go back-- but I can't say it was awesome because of the attitude. 5-stars for the activity and how organized it was. Docked 1 star for the attitude of some of the instructors and fellow trapeze students. read more

Get ready to bring your abs to the executioner. And your palms, knee-bows, traps and every little muscle you didn't know you had. Two days ago--a gorgeous Saturday--I discovered, suddenly, that I am afraid of heights. I had popped a Xanax for recreational reasons but was on the verge of a panic attack anyway. Scary. By my fourth swing, I was nearly ready to go upside down, but chickened out. I'll be back to master that trick and conquer those fears. The staff is friendly, and in fact you better fall in love quick because they literally have your life in their hands. Believing that a size 0 woman can handle a size 14 body with one hand took more faith and trust than I could freely give in one afternoon. The long climb up the ladder, leaning all your body weight over the precipice of the platform--toes over--as an instructor hands you the trapeze and it feels like you're being pulled to your death, that's the worst part. Oh, and maybe the pain I'm still in two days later. TSNY is an amazing experience, and we're lucky to have it in D.C. Support it. read more

I went here early on a Sunday morning (read: crack of dawn early, but that was the only time slot left) with my friend M for her birthday! Good thing I love my friend to pieces otherwise I would've been super grumpy that early on a Sunday. Anyway, I didn't tell her at the time she asked me to go with her but I am actually pretty scared of heights. But its her birthday, I couldn't say no! Plus, I never say no to a challenge, and what better way to face my fear than with Trapeze? We arrived early and had a brief but important overview of what to do once on the platform. It's really important to listen to the very nice and patient instructors- they are there to keep you safe and make sure you have fun! You are hooked in a harness the entire time, even while climbing the scary ladder! I think that was scarier than standing on the platform itself! After getting to the top the instructor sets you up for your first jump! The bar is really heavy, and although you have to lean over the platform to reach it with both hands, they are holding onto you- and there's a net below so you are perfectly safe! It took a few more moments to get the courage to jump off and swing/hang on the bar. I think the first jump was pretty terrifying (scared of heights!!) but the jumps after were better, though getting off the platform every time was a bit scary for me. But all the instructors were so friendly and definitely eased my fears! After the first jump I had a blast doing the rest and watching the others progress over the course of our time there. I even got to do a knee hang and back flip off the bar! This experience was fantastic! I am so glad M asked me to do this and am so happy I got to share this with her on her birthday! I don't think I would do it again- mainly because I just don't like heights. But if someone like me can do it any one can! Give it a shot- it is SO much fun!! Face your fears and do it!! read more

For my big 3-0 I wanted to do something big but not Vegas big since I would be visiting in a few months for a delayed celebration. So I referred to my DC Bucket List and set my sights on something fun - flying trapeze! I've already taken an interest in aerial arts like silks and pole fitness. Apparently it's naturally for me to be hanging from things upside down and maybe one day I will run off and join the circus. So I attempted to rustle a group together and one brave friend, K, decided to join me. First, it seems like spots book up fast. After changing my mind again and again, about 4 days out, the only weekend spot available was Sunday morning at 8:15 a.m. I was determined to do this on my birthday weekend and thankfully K was willing to wake up early and go with me. Done. It was super easy to book our spots online. I hate when I have to call or email to schedule. I like to be in control. Since we went on an early Sunday we chose to drive in and parking was free and aplenty on the street. Just make sure there isn't a Nationals game around the same time as it is only a couple of blocks away from the studio. Check in, sign your waiver,and harness up. Elliot, our friendly punk rocker instructor briefed us on safety and procedures and had us practice proper stance on the ground before we climb up. Once you climb up the very rickety ladder, attached to a harness, Jill greets you up top to release your ladder harness while buckling you into another harness. You are constantly attached to something. No fear! She will then tuck her hand into your belt to hold you, because that trapeze bar is HEAVY and will pull you down. it's designed to. Ready, hup,hop off the platform and you're flying! Mo, who is off to the side holding a rope attached to the trapeze bar, directs you to swing your legs up to hook your knees on the bar, unhook, then dismount. The first time is scary and thrilling at the same time. The hardest part (aside from the ladder) is just hopping off the platform the first time. From there, all you can do is just hang on and live in the moment. If you fall, 1. you are attached to the harness and 2. there's a giant net to catch you! My class was full with about 10 students - 2 of which have done this before so it was fun to watch them do other tricks. Once you are comfortable with the knee hang then you move onto backflipping off the bar, then when your knee hang is nice and smooth you can be caught by a second swinger. By the end everyone was so happy and thrilled. Despite all our different skillsets we all had a blast, we laughed, we cried, we screamed. At the end you can check out the professional photos which are provided for you on a flash drive if you choose to purchase the pictures. They also have some good deals for extra classes if you sign up right then and there. Other than that, I loved that the staff was friendly, provided tips and advice, and helped us keep our cool during the entire lesson. They didn't even pressure us to buy any extras. I hate when people are awesome then are like "hey, you have to buy this add-on now!" Would I go back? Totally! My only complaint is that classes are pretty costly however you are basically paying for 3 staff members to guide you for an hour and a half. That's not bad at all. Instructors are as good as they always are. Not as many people made the catch this time as I've seen other times but it's as thrilling of an experience as you can imagine. This review is mainly to comment on their new location on the DC Riverfront, not far from the Nationals Stadium. Definitely an advantage to have an INDOOR trapeze rig during the colder months. To get there, get off at the Navy Yard Green Line stop, and get up at the NJ Ave/USDOT exit. The website says head east, which means walk left once you get above ground a block or two (AWAY from the Stadium) until you find 4th St. Make a right at 4th St. and walk another block or two towards the Big White Tent. It may look like a big tent in the middle of a construction field, but it will be a great spot once they set up their additional outdoor rig (May this year) and when the adjacent park will be completed (July this year) overlooking the river. read more

Went here with a friend as part of a Living Social deal. It was a chance to try out three activities -- trapeze, trampoline, and aerial silks (think: Cirque du Soleil). Had a FANTABULOUS time, and am so glad I tried it. The most exciting activity was the trapeze itself. I'm totally not a daredevil (and I even have a bit of a fear of heights), but this class is an awesome chance to face your fear and OVERCOME it. I won't bore you with all the details (as apparently elite Yelper Michelle N. has written a super awesome and very detailed review below that contains all the info you could ever need), but just suffice it to say that this place has totally given me a new lease on life. Forgive me for being dramatic, but when someone like me -- not that much of an athlete and certainly not an adventurist -- could find herself grinning from ear to ear after swinging from a pole at an ungodly height off the ground...there's something special here, folks! I highly encourage everyone to try Trapeze School. It makes a great date night activity (there were couples there encouraging each other...so sweet!) or girls night event, and it's certainly $60 or so well-spent. You will have a great time, make great memories, and most importantly -- prove to yourself and the world that you really were born to fly! :-) read more

I had so much fun! What set this business apart from anything else was how warm and friendly every instructor was. They provided precise feedback during and after each round of swinging in a completely non-judgmental and encouraging way. This atmosphere of genuine friendliness is so rare. I'm not sure why I decided to take trapeze in the first place. I've been slowly accumulating ninja skills (martial arts, parkour, sailing, race car driving... see my other reviews) but somehow ended up working on my Plan B career to go work in the circus. I actually tried out this trapeze school last year when they still had the rig set up near Chinatown in the parking lot that has been taken over by the millions of DC to NY buses. Nothing will ever compare to the first time you climb up the ladder to take off for the first time. Its liberating and a rush for adrenaline junkies like me. In your first class, you will get a chance to do a back flip dismount from the bar into the net and depending on how well you pick up the techniques, will probably successfully get caught by one of the instructors. You'll probably freak out at least once and land a little oddly in the net, maybe get a scratch or bruise, but you'll bounce (literally!) and be just fine. A lot of these reviews focus on first time experiences, but its also something that you should do more than once. The rush you got the first time climbing up the ladder comes back the first time you have to basically Superman face first into the net (which I ironically did wearing my super awesome Superman undies). The great thing is that each person can work at their own pace which allows flyers of all levels to come to any class and still come away with something knew. I saw veterans of several years working on some really advanced moves in the same class as first time flyers. It gives you something to aspire to. I waited almost a year to take my second class at the New York branch of this school. I was in denial that I was addicted for a whole two weeks before I decided to check out the school's new location near the baseball stadium. It was a nice easy 25 minute bike ride from my office (they tell me they have plans to put in a bike rack for the summer). I wanted to make sure the instructors would be a good fit before I decided to buy a class pass. Everyone is laid back, encouraging, and when they need to, they give you a little dose of tough love. So yea, I can't wait to fly again. read more

Have you been flying today? Whattttttt? Ok, now I'm back on the ground. This place is wonderful. On top of seeming experienced, everyone is so pleasant to be around. They really do a lot to ensure you have a great time. Our group had a variety of ages, and it still worked like a charm. It's not cheap, but it really feels good value for the great equipment and experienced trainers. It's a ton of fun, so I recommend it to all! I had an amazingly fun time at the Trapeze school. A friend and I went at 8-9ish am on a Saturday and the way it's set up is that you're with a group of people. Our group happened to be 6 12-year old girls, which was a bit awkward but still a fun time! You go one at a time, while some people are dispersed through if they're taking lessons. The acrobats are extremely patient and guide you through everything. They're all amazingly nice. You have the opportunity to do jumps, catches, and flips. I'd highly recommend trying it out with a group of girlfriends before brunch. :) Also, be sure to wear leggings or yoga pants to protect your skin from the rough bars you're hanging from. read more

What an amazing experience! Everyone at the school is so incredibly nice, encouraging and helpful; including all staff and other flyers. Their number one priority is definitely your safety. They have areas marked off, safety harnesses and a big ol' net to catch you in case you fall. Then their second priority is to make sure you have a great time! They will point out things to help you improve so they next round you go, you can do better. In my class I think there was 10 people and we each got to go 5 times in 2 hours. I think 5 turns is the perfect amount because my hands were starting to develop callouses and they began to hurt. I don't think there is much you can do to prevent this and I didn't see anybody wearing gloves. The first time up there was a little nerve wrecking. But once you take off, it was so fun! Flying through the air with the wind in your face, amazing! Plus they have a photographer there to capture your best moments :) You have to listen carefully to their instructions because they will tell you the best time to lift your legs up to do the knee bend. If you do well, then you will have an opportunity to be be caught as you swing from one bar to another. At the end of class, you can sign up for your 2nd class and get your 3rd class for FREE! read more

After just one class they have most fliers able to swing out, flip upside down, and reach out your hands to be caught by another flier. NEVER would have thought I could be taught such circus-ey fun. The instructor told me 'trapeze is cheaper then therapy' She was so right. It's a great way to get a rush, forget about your blackberry, work on trust and be a spectacle in the middle of downtown. read more

Of the 5 trapeze schools I've been to so far (see my other reviews) this one ranks somewhere in the middle. The facility is warm and has indoor bathrooms, it's fairly easy to get to from public transit, and they have video equipment to review your swing or tricks. Mandy is one of the stand-out instructors of the 15 I have worked with so far, proving that it's not necessary to be mean or arrogant in order to be serious or knowledgeable. She really paid attention to my background and learning style and adjusted her calls (which were already sharp and clear) and timing to my responses. Confident calls help elicit confident responses. With other instructors, I've had to remind myself to respond quickly even when the calls are weak. An important lesson to learn, but something maybe a first-timer shouldn't have to deal with. Thanks, Mandy! I don't know who was pulling lines when the friend I brought with me decided to completely let go of his hands and legs on the back end of his knee hang. This is apparently quite uncommon, even for first-timers, because the instructors all gathered to watch the video reply. All I know is they were prepared for the unexpected, and kept my friend from getting hurt. They also didn't make him feel stupid afterward, and he finished the day with a successful knee hang! The TSNY schools are pretty consistent from location to location and they have a carefully planned curriculum. This location didn't have anyone taking pictures when were there (the others had them for sale after class), so maybe remember to bring your own camera. read more

Took my husband here for his birthday this past Sunday! From the time of entry to being briefed on all safety information the staff was welcoming, informative and extremely clear on what their expectations were for class. They were patient & gave amazing cues to help improve form and function on each attempt. I was not scared at all because I was completely safe whole time from walking up the ladder to jumping off the platform. There was never a time that I felt uneasy about what I was being asked to do. (Don't eat a lot before going the belts are mighty tight around the mid section of the body) Thank you very much to the staff for giving us such an amazing first experience at the high flying trapeze. We will definitely be bringing our children to try this amazing experience. read more
