Had the $85 set Mother's Day dinner last night with a party of 5. We ordered a number of entrees and appetizers and all were average or extremely disappointing. Even the desserts were only average surprisingly since I usually like the bakery next door. Typically, I wouldn't even leave a lousy review but the waitress was a price gouger and even charged 2 moms $4 each for plain cup of hot water, putting tea on the receipt when it wasn't ordered. I had the baked clam appetizer which had no flavor and some pot roast which was basically the worst dish I've eaten at any establishment in at least a few years. read more

Tried the calamari and diver scallops--both fine. The group especially enjoyed the ravioli, which got the most compliments. We had not been back to this restaurant for several years, but finally tried the "laid back" bakery/café next door a few months ago. We very much enjoyed the bakery/café for sandwiches and salads for lunch and pastries with coffee for dessert. The restaurant is fancy/formal by comparison. We were at their recent Mother's Day luncheon, $65 per person, fixed price 3-course meal (appetizer, entree, dessert). While it's still a nice place with valet parking and excellent service, and the appetizers and desserts were good, my wife and I were both disappointed with our entrees. She had the tuna and I had the steak. We both asked for them to be cooked medium-well and both were served medium rare. On this Saturday evening Diane's was full on both floors, but with ample wait staff on hand and good acoustics, we hardly noticed. Service was prompt, meal was great. The restaurant got a little refresh recently, making it brighter, more open. Three appetizers, four mains and two desserts, a bottle of wine and two cocktails total just under $400 for 4. As soon as I walked into this restaurant, I knew I was ready to have a delightful dining experience. This restaurant provides such a warm and welcoming environment that is palpable upon entry. We came on a slightly rainy day, however we quickly forgot the weather outside when we sat down at our table. Food 3/5: Upon be seated at our table, we were given a basket of bread, however it wasn't soft or warm, which took me by surprise. The gnocchi was very average. It was coated in pesto and inundated with too many peas. It was definitely lacking flavor and I was left a little unsatisfied by the taste and also the smaller portion size. Other members of my party really enjoyed their food. The Carbonara tasted delicious. It was not too heavy and had the perfect amount of flavor. I had found it very odd that their menu also consisted of a lot of summertime drinks. We were dining in December, so I summertime drink was the exact opposite of the vibe that we were going for that day. I definitely think they need to revamp the menu to match the season. There is great wine selection. Definitely get dessert. All of the options are great. I will say though that this restaurant is not great for vegetarians due to the limited number of options. Ambience 4/5: We had opted to sit outdoors, however I think the inside is way more cozy and welcoming. If I come back, I'm definitely sitting inside. The outside patio was covered with a tent that was well heated, but didn't match the same vibes that the inside provided. Won't return: unwelcoming. We went on a Sunday in late January. It's by my tennis club and with a 7pm game we decided to have a 5pm dinner there. I had asked for a corner table. When we walked in - our first time, there was only four diners at one of two tables by the window. When the male maître d' led us to the third table near the bar at the back, I asked if we could sit by the window. "It's been reserved." He relied coldly. "What time? We would be done by 6:30." I said. "If you want, you can go to the second floor." Then did I fully aware his unfriendliness, with his mask wore below his nose. Because I didn't know if there were other restaurants open and with the game was so close, we had our meal there. Average food and decent service from the waiting staff. He stared at us almost thought out the time we were there. The window table was empty till we left. I regretted for not leaving at the beginning. The ground floor hall, I think had only four tables. This is another one of these restaurants you walk into and just know it's going to be a delightful evening. We were immediately greet warmly by the hostess who seated us right away. The first floor is just a delightful cozy restaurant filled with what appeared to be regulars. There is also an upstairs section but I did not see that to comment. Within seconds our wonderful server Michelle came over, introduced herself and gave us menus and took drink orders. Bread is delicious and served with olive oil... Do not fill up on this. There is also a garlic crisp which was perfect to dip in the sauce that came with the muscles. Appetizers: Muscles in white wine sauce with fresh tomato. Perfect. Nice size muscles and the sauce just kept you wanting more. It was perfect for dipping the bread and garlic crisps. Portobello mushroom was well grilled and tasty. Entree: Love my Tuscan Pot Roast with mashed potatoes. The meat was incredibly tender and the tomato based tuscan sauce was rich and flavorful. Funny how it reminded me of a nice tuscan cab with deep hidden flavors that come out in layers. My wife had the Chicken under a brick. It was a half of chicken with Broccoli Rabe. Chicken was crispy on the outside and moist and tasty on the inside. (Isn't that how it's supposed to be?) Dessert: Loved the apple crumb with thew vanilla ice cream. Plenty of apple with a delicious crumble, a perfect mix. My wife had the angel food cake with strawberry gelato. Everything about this dish was great. Apparently they are known for this great Angel food cake. This was a winning experience and was very happy to learn that they have this price fix every Sunday... We will be back.... We've visited three times this year. The food is excellent with each dish tasting exactly as you would expect and perfectly prepared. The entire staff is efficient, friendly without being cloying and professional. Management is present but subtly all seeing. The restaurant is in an old building but the interior surprises with its open airy ambiance. Parking is by valet or in a large lot adjacent to the restaurant under the viaduct. This is one of the best restaurants in the area so reserve beforehand. read more

Celebrated a dear friend's birthday here today. Great space, tables are nicely separated which is very much appreciated during this challenging time. Staff were attentive and service was timely. Food was plated with satisfying portions and tasted scrumptious. There was outdoor seating under a tent but it was packed. Was glad I made reservations for seating so there was no wait. Will go back to try the seafood selection. Pasta dishes were great, and dessert tarts were tasty with coffee. I mean okay we want to sit and talk, enjoy our drinks but taking like 20 minutes to come back to give us the check was annoying. this was at the end of the night so it's not like they were really busy. if we had wanted dessert here well 20 minutes just to see if we wanted anything we were like forget it, because then what probably 20 minutes to bring it out? we just went to yolo after.... also never even asked if we wanted another drink etc...I mean I don't desperately need to drink, they are the ones missing out on money. anyway I really liked this place besides for the slow service. maybe we just had a bad waiter? whatever. would still come back just don't expect to get out of here super fast lol. read more

When it's your father's birthday, you venture to where he wants to dine. Through his own searchings, he fell upon this place, though if he/we had a chance to jump in a DeLorean and redo the night, we might've picked elsewhere. Let me explain. Trattoria is a quaint little spot in Roslyn which goes well with the quaint feeling Roslyn gives off. The other feeling Roslyn can give off is $$$ and Diane embraces that pretty accurately. The restaurant can be a bit overshadowed by the bakery/cafe that Diane's is more commonly known for, but more on that later. Both are found next to each other with a cute outside area that works well for dining or dessert when it's a bit warmer out. Inside trattoria is a small dining room and bar with a clean cut, fancy feel. It's around what you might expect from the location. The menu has a nice array of Italian dishes, meats, seafood, and specials, even though they were still rocking summer fare from the large word at the top of the page. A bread basket donned our table to start, and it was filled with three different types (including some fabulous crusty cheddar crackers) and accompanied with dipping oil which made for a great way to start off the meal. Remember that for later. We then went with two apps to share: baked clams and fried zucchini blossoms. This is where things took a turn for the not-so-tasty. The clams sounded good on paper (chopped with sea scallops and breadcrumbs) but once they hit your pallet it tasted more like eating the grungy remains of a finished seafood platter. It was a flavor I quickly wanted to extinguish so I tried the blossoms which weren't as flavorful as I had hoped, but did the trick in covering up the clam taste. For the main dish I went with spaghetti carbonara. It wasn't too heavy, and though a bit salty was a pretty good dish.....but, I feel like I've had better with less impact on my wallet. I also tried my sister's ricotta ravioli and my mother's fettuccini bolognese and found both had a similar end result (Dad had the lamb shank which he enjoyed so I guess there's some brownie points in there). Dessert time. Even though we were a little full, we decided to share the warm apple cider donut with maple walnut ice cream. It was pretty small, but extremely fresh and had a nice cinnamon apple bite with great contrasts of warm and cold temperatures. So, moral of the story? Let's see....the bread and the dessert were the best parts of the meal, and they are more known for their bakery. Hmm, I guess that's pretty telling of where the effort goes to in their food creation/preparation. Overall, Trattoria Diane has a nice ambiance and decent menu options, but nothing necessarily worthy of your consumption (or your dollar). But, there's enough good flavor from the bread and dessert to warrant a return trip....to the bakery that is. read more

Drove past this place for the past six months and tonight as we drove past we decided to stop in for dinner. It was early so they were able to seat us without a reservation. Lucky us. The menu is seasonal and creative. For apps we order the roasted figs with prosciutto and fried zucchini blossoms with goat cheese. Wow. Amazing. For dinner we had the branzino with lemon, capers and spinach and the bouillabaisse. Both so delicious. The service was so attentive. My new favorite place. read more

Very enjoyable meal during Restaurant Week! Called for a table on Friday evening just 15 minutes beforehand, no problem. Granted, it was opening time, but wanted to be sure no issues as it was a Friday during RW (and had concerns based on some reviews). Requested 1st floor dining room, very comfortable and romantic decor, pleasant colors, good lighting, loved the attractive artwork. Nice glass of prosecco to start, good quality wine as it can be a poor option by the glass. Date enjoyed martini. Tasty and interesting chopped salad, mussels just fair, small and I wasn't thrilled w the sauce, but ok. Chicken under a brick was very enjoyable, delicious rosemary flavour in moist chicken. Date's Tuscan pot roast was tasty. Excited for dessert as is Diane's afterall and have always enjoyed the bakery. Large selection, especially for RW menu. Each had a slice of pie, me mixed berry, his apple. Very good, but found the apple slightly over sweetened (have actually found some of the bakery items too sweet lately in general) and a touch short on berry filling so a bit dry for berry pie, but lovely presentation and good. Overall, very good and lovely setting. Service was fine. Happy to say will go back as had been years ago and very disappointed, so this was a happy evening! read more

Had one of the worst dining experiences of my life here. The food was offensively bad. Sad fritto misto--looked like garbage on a plate. Short ribs and mashed potatoes that tasted like airline fare. Stale, inedible profiteroles. A salad that the menu described as having an "almond vinaigrette" was served with walnuts. My dining companion is highly allergic to walnuts. When we complained, the waiter and the manager joined forces to try to convince us that it was our fault for having ordered it in the first place. Ridiculous. It was a Friday night and the dining room was full. For the life of me, I could not figure out why. Only on Long Island will people settle for this slop. The owners should be embarrassed. read more

Trattoria Diane is not just a trattoria, they serve all kinds of food including modern American and French inspired preparations. Seating was fairly easy to get on a weekday and we all ordered from the prix fixe menu ($35 per person with a generous sized appetizer, entree and dessert). The beet salad was really good and fresh. Seared duck in peach sauce over wild rice was cooked perfectly (didn't like the wild rice, it was weird tasting but I don't like wild rice in general). Dessert selection was excellent. Portions here are generous and you will not go home hungry. Service is also pleasant and friendly. Thumbs up. read more

After a holiday in Rome, the creators of Diane's decided to model the menu after what they experienced there. All of the entree's looked good that were coming in and through the main dining room. Especially the duck. We had fish, green beens, caesar salad, and a butternut squash ravioli with butter, sage and ameratti. Nothing not to like. The fruit tart with ice cream was delicious.. the ice cream was a bit to small on the side.. less than a table spoon, and it wasn't a mistake... who knows why - perhaps they prefer it that way themselves.. or they consider the ice cream something of a rare object.. maybe it's homemade.. but it tasted average.. just tasted.. more like a taste sample for the ice cream. Everything was great.. just don't go for the ala mode.. it will leave you confused. The waiters were all attentive and friendly - always refilling water and coming by. Diane's is a hidden gem nestled in Roslyn. The ambience is quite warming and the staff are very attentive and professional. For starters I had the avocado seafood salad besides lacking some seasoning it was very good. For dinner I had branzino fish . It was tasty, moist and delicious. The berry pie was very yummy (excellent, non soggy crust!!) as was the bread for the table. As for the food itself, it was mostly bland.  We had the zucchini blossoms, grilled artichoke, pot roast and veal milanese.  I think that perhaps the chef needs to use more salt in his/her cooking.  Nothing was bad, but nothing was great. I really wanted to love this place because it is a quaint and classy establishment with a menu that is nicely composed with fair pricing. The reputation of Diane's I think made me walk in with high expectations. I think the food was good, the service was ok. The problems lie in the finer details. I'm nitpicking but I guess that's what happens when a place's reputation precedes it. Our starters were great. Everything was tasty and fresh, perfect items for the season. Then the pan seared jumbo shrimp was pretty ok. The shrimp were a good size, done pretty well, but the risotto was a touch on the lesser done side of Al dente. The soft shell crabs were tasty but sat on a bed of tomatoes that were way over-salted! I was looking forward to trying the frozen cappuccino and that was my favorite dessert. The other ones at the table had ice cream accompanying and it bothered me that the ice cream tasted icy, which is a sure sign that it's melted/refrozen, or stored too close to the entryway of a freezer. A bit disappointing, but the flavors were good. We had dinner fairly early and the restaurant wasn't in full swing, but the wait staff seemed to be preoccupied with chatting with one another by the wall near the entrance and we always had to try to get their attention more than once. They were perfectly courteous and helpful but again, sometimes it's the little things. read more

I took my mom here to celebrate her birthday, but I wish I had chosen a better restaurant. The service was pretty awful with a set of inattentive wait staff. We sat by the door and would see waiters, bus boys, and the hostess chatting away while we were trying to make eye contact with someone for attention. We literally had to flag people down for refills in water and to order. I also didn't realize that they had pre-fixe meals on Saturdays and our waitress couldn't explain to us properly as to whether or not we could order off a regular menu. She was quite confusing. In terms of food, I would have given the place 3 stars. For the price, the food was pretty decent in quality and portion but this is not a place where you would expect a good carbonara or a well-rendered duck breast. These things take finesse and Trattoria Diane simply does not have it. What irked me the most was actually my to-go bag. I couldn't finished my bone-in veal entree and asked for it to go. Naturally, I left the portion that was attached to the bone to take home but was disgustingly surprised to find that my bone-in veal cutlet was hacked away when I got home. I guess they couldn't spare a larger take out container and decided to cut my veal in order to fit the tin round. So, instead of taking home 1/2 my entree like I intended, I was given 1/4 of what was left on my plate. I mean, it was either that or they had given me someone else's veal. Either way, it's pretty gross and unethical. PS... Stay away from the coconut cake. You would think that if anything their bake goods would be on point, the cake was super dry and bland. This was my first time dining at Diane's trattoria. I have eaten at the bakery several times and taken out deserts. They were always very good. Last night the meal we had was very good. All four appetizers were tasty and exceeded our expectations. A special salad with ricotta salata was outstanding as was the grilled portobello mushroom over arugula. The chicken under a brick was cooked perfectly. And both the Branzino and halibut were equally delicious. The one pasta dish fettuchini bolognese was also delicious. The atmosphere and crowd were fun and upbeat. They had a small and manageable bar scene. And hey played great music too! I was quite surprised as I was expecting a blue hair scene. I don't like being mislead. The food here is good. The service is acceptable. The ambiance is fine. The problem is that they pretend to participate in restaurant week and they really do not. If you cannot serve the prix fix menu on a Saturday night past 7:00 pm leave restaurant week to establishments who want to engage new customers. I made a reservation for 7:00 pm. We arrived promptly and were seated and we asked for a wine menu. It took 15 minutes to order drinks and by the time our dinner order was taken it was 7:30 pm. We were told they could not honor the prix-fix menu that we had ordered off of because it was after 7:00 pm. They should not have given us a menu with this option and they should have made it clear before we ordered drinks that the prix-fix menu was no longer available. I would have and should have gone elsewhere. The meal was not worth the $200 it ultimately cost. The manager blew it. We wont be back. read more

We had artichoke heart salad and, figs with gorgonzola and prosciutto salad for apps. For mains we had 3 huge diver scallops pan seared on corn, beans and asparagus. And pan seared wild salmon, medium rare, on fresh al dante beans, in a red wine sauce. Both extremely delicious. For dessert pear/almond tarts and excellent cappuccino. I was disappointed they were out of the pan seared pork chop and my spouse couldn't get the plum tart she desired. Everything was excellent. Diane's did a fantastic job for our to-go Thanksgiving dinner. The menu choices offered a variety of options beyond just the traditional holiday turkey meal. The process for ordering and pick up could not have been any more convenient or efficient. The entire meal - salads, braised short ribs, duck and desserts all were delicious and everything traveled home well and was still warm when served. This was the first time we couldn't host a large group for Thanksgiving so we really appreciated their terrific service and quality of food. read more
