This weekend I attended a baby shower at Trattoria Toscana for the first time, and the place is absolutely lovely. The ambiance was wonderful, and the food was even better. Everything I tasted from beginning to end was delicious. My only suggestion would be to shorten the wait time between courses. The dishes were served very spaced out, and we waited quite a while for the entrée. That said, every appetizer and every dish offered was absolutely wonderful and well worth it. It's a shame they're a little far from me, because otherwise I'd probably be having dinner or hosting parties there all the time! read more

My friend and I went here for dinner tonight. Initially I was underwhelmed. The smelly lobster tank upon walking in was off setting for someone who isn't a seafood person. However, we decided to brave past it. We were promptly seated and served water and a bred basket with an eggplant type mixture. It was very good. Then I ordered w delicious water melon martini. I had two ! We got the dinner package. My appetizer was eggplant rollantini. It was well done. For dinner we got the siciliano rigatoni !! Oh my god !!! So de@licious ! I want expecting that pop of flavor and overall amazing texture. I finished with a cheese cake that was also fresh and creamy an delicious !! I really wanted this place to be great sadly the key ingredient for greatness in a restaurant is the food. This place had too many failure for me to give a great review. The staff from the hostesses to the young lady bringing the beverage to the food runners to our excellent waiter were outstanding. The service staff has their game down. The dining area and overall inside appearance is wonderful. My only observation is they have it lit just a bit too dim. The table lights are yellow and this hides the true appearance of the plates. They start you off with a bread baskets that has a variety of items from bread sticks to a crispy Italian bread. You get some caponata that was excellent and great olive oil for your bread. We had two appetizers, I enjoyed the octopus but the sauce was lacking any flavor. We got arancini as well this was supposed to have mozzarella inside but nobody told the rice ball guy. In fact they were flavorless even the white sauce was bland. Folks, I am quite generous with my reviews but I am telling you my experience was a disappointment based on the food delivered to our table. READ ON. My buddy got a dish that was supposed to be a pistachio pesto with buratta and grilled shrimp over house made pene. He got a white cream sauce with no shrimp and no butatta. When the waiter came to check on him and was informed the dish was missing key ingredients he quickly brought a butatta in a bowl and in a panic cut it in half and dished it into my buddies plate. The shrimp came out 3 minutes later and to add insult to injury the shrimp were raw inside. I got veal parm with linguini. The veal was paper thin and tough plus the presentation was uninspired. Two slices of sandwich cheese on top of the shoe leather breadcrumb thing just looked like a child made it. The linguini was badly undercooked, not al dente 3 to 5 minutes too soon! C'mon if an Italian restaurant cant cook spaghetti they should be selling tacos instead! On the plus side my girlfriend ate her entire serving of lobster ravioli with shrimp in vodka sauce. I tasted it and didn't hate it but these lobster ravioli are not as good as the fresh pasta lobster ravioli you can get At Deerborn or Shop Rite. As I said earlier, I wanted this place to be good, sadly the kitchen is their weak link. I paid the bill, left a 20% tip and split. Too many great Italian restaurant in the area to give these guys another try. read more

Five for dinner on a Wednesday night, and the restaurant should have been more crowded. The food (salad, apps, entrees and dessert) was very tasty, and the service was excellent. Since we were celebrating a birthday, our server asked if we wanted a candle in the cheesecake and obliged us with a group photo without being prompted. Our waitress, Noah, was absolutely lovely, warm, attentive, and well versed in the best of the menu. We started with the artichoke with lemon and vongole oreganata, both perfectly prepared and full of flavor. I had the linguine frutti di mare, and they graciously substituted the fra diavolo sauce, spicy, rich, and delicious. My husband ordered the chicken scarpariello, and the meat was so moist and tender you'd swear it was all thighs. He joked, "Anyone who's experienced something spectacular with chicken gets that!" We finished with a perfect pairing: crème brûlée and tiramisu, followed by two glasses of Sambuca. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, the atmosphere warm yet elegant, and the staff genuinely impressive. My fiance and I had an AMAZING time at trattoria toscana!! This was our first time here and we will absolutely be back. Our server, Mustafa, was so kind. He shared his personal preferences and even offered us desserts on the house! The food was a m a z i n g. We had the grilled octopus special for our app, it was cooked perfectly. The entrees were outstanding: mushroom risotto and Orecchiette. Drinks were delicious, as were desserts! The bar area is very modern- black and white with a purpley lighting- Very vibey! We sat in the main dining room which is modern as well, with a personalized flower wall where guests can take photos! The restaurant also has 2 different private rooms for events. My husband planned an afternoon birthday party for me for about 20 people at Trattoria Toscana and it was great!! The staff gave us good suggestions for the appetizers and everyone loved them. This place needs a change. Price point puts it in the upscale category of restaurants in the area. But you can tell they aren't appealing to the local upscale customer. On a Saturday night, not a single person sitting at the bar with a half empty dining room. When you enter the restaurant, there is a prime aged meat fridge that is mostly empty with menu prices for steak that rival high end steakhouses. They provide small portions of mediocre Italian food in an area with many good Italian restaurants. They have a wine list with options over $1,000 per bottle yet they show no vintage on the wine list. The whole thing just doesn't work. Upscale restaurants in Monmouth County are packed these days, even on week nights, let alone on weekend nights. But the upscale customer is ignoring this place. read more

This is tough. It was a holiday, which is the only reason I am giving 2 stars and not 1. I'm trying to give the staff a little grace. We arrived and were seated quickly- our table was nice and in a comfortable location. Our server came over promptly and asked if we would like a drink. The room is dimly lit, which was fine for me- but tough for my father (who is in his 70's). They did not have chocolate milk but we were offered hot chocolate instead- which I thought was an odd alternative. It was a limited holiday menu, and each entree had a price next to it. For example- the penne vodka was $59.99, chicken parm was $69.99 and steak was $79.99. It was not explained to us that we also would choose an appetizer and some form of dessert would be provided at that price. I had to ask the server and she finally confirmed what I thought was the arrangement. I did expect higher prices due to the holiday, and would have no issue paying those prices if the food and service were both fantastic. We were brought a basket of bread with no butter and no oil. I had to flag someone down after 10 minutes for butter. We received our sub par appetizers quickly (mine was Mozzarella en Corozza- but it was a grilled cheese ... and not a good one- very bland). The appetizer choices were okay, but my husband's "Mozzarella di Buffao" was literally 3 slices of tomato and 3 small pieces of cheese. No exaggeration. We waited 30 minutes for our entrees after our appetizer plates were cleared. 30 minutes. AND they never brought my elderly father's Chicken Marsala. He waited while we all sat with our plates. I think his dinner came out 20 minutes later. We were never offered any courtesy (complementary side dish or ANYTHING) for his dinner never being delivered. We had to ask 3 times for it until the issue seemed urgent. We were never offered grated cheese or pepper for our entrees. I normally wouldn't complain about that, but when you are paying over $500 for dinner, these things matter. The wait staff was less than accommodating. The only people who seemed like they cared were the busboys. The steak was the only entree that was raved about. My chicken parmesan was not good. The chicken itself was over seasoned with rosemary. The sauce was completely flavorless... almost like they just dumped a can of plain sauce on top of the chicken and pasta. My son ordered penne vodka, which was also bland. It was a very small portion for such an expensive price. After being at dinner for over 2 hours, and ignored for most of that time, my 8 year old was getting antsy. My husband asked if it was possible to take our desserts (which were included in the outlandish price), to go. Our server suggested we ask the food runners to pack them up when they bring the food out, but then flippantly said "I'll just do it". We weren't asked what our choices for dessert were- they just threw little pieces of a few things in a to go container. We didn't even care at that point and wanted to just leave. We asked for the check- which took forever since nobody was glancing in our direction. I immediately put my credit card into the check folder and stood it up on the table so it would be easily seen. I waited. I sent my family outside to get into the car.... and still waited. Finally 10 minutes later, another staff member pointed out to our server that I was ready to pay. She came over to me and said "I will bring this to the hostess for you". Is this a diner? Was I expected to bring my check to the hostess stand? I was confused. She acted like I was an inconvenience. I just got up and walked to the hostess stand to sign the credit card slip. Gratuity was included. $82.00 of gratuity which was not at all deserved. I understand it was a holiday and things happen. I understand a lot of that is beyond the control of the server. Being ignored, spoken to like you are an inconvenience, not being offered pepper or grated cheese - are not. I worked in the service industry for many years and I found that most of our experience at this restaurant was unacceptable. I will not be back. read more

Went for Brunch on a Sunday we were the only family there took over an hour to get our meals my husband ordered steak and eggs medium rare with over easy eggs both very well done. Waited another 45mins for check again we were the only ones there. They offered a slice of cheesecake for over cooked meal. Food was ok don't think we will be back. One star because cocktails were good (all through the olives were mushy). Came at 7:15pm on Saturday night for a 7:30pm reservation. Was seated promptly, but the place was busy. We got waters and ordered cocktails. Ordered one appetizer to share (2 people) and it came in a reasonable amount of time, along with 1 additional cocktail. This is where it drops. We each ordered a pasta dish, carbonara and their special, grilled shrimp with rigatoni pesto burrata and tomatoes. All relatively quick dishes. By the time we ordered our meals the restaurant was half empty. One hour goes by and still no meal. We flag the waiter and he says from another table that food will be out in a minute. Another twenty goes by and still no food... a busser comes by and asks if we are all set with the Parmesan cheese, which we reply that we still haven't gotten our food. He says "oh no" and leaves. We waited a total of 2 hours from the time we got seated. Finally the waiter comes by and says a round is on the house, but we're not interested. He says food will be out in a minute. ANOTHER 5 MINUTES GOES BY. Still no food. Waiter is avoiding us at this point. He comes back and says food is on its way and that he was embarrassed and didn't want the come back to the table?? We asked for the check but he insisted the food is coming. Each time we encountered someone we asked for the check. Eventually we got the food. My carbonara was super greasy and inedible. My friends rigatoni was undercooked, crunchy and did not have burrata but regular mozzarella. We left the food and went to pay at the host stand who began to ring us out, but a waiter saw and told us the dinner was comped. The restaurant was 80% empty at this point. Our first time tonight. Disappointing we heard so much from our New York friends that their NY restaurant was so good. Well not in NJ . I had the double cut pork chop. It was dry and had virtually no flavor. My wife had the sole. It came out cold, the bread crumb topping was mushy had no crisp at all. The appetizer mozzarella Carrosa was cold and flavorless. The eggplant was flavorful but cold also. The salad while fresh were drenched in the dressing to the point of swimming in it. Dampened the crispiness of the greens. The desserts were good . No complaints. We waited till now bc they've been here about a year and so we figured all the kinks we worked out. Nope!!! How anyone can say the food here was worth the fine cuisine expense must be disappointed. There are many other choices that are enormously better within just a few miles it's better to go there.. I'm so sorry this place didn't measure up. One indication is on a Thursday night there was literally 1 couple when we arrived who looked like the same couple when we left and 1 additional man eating at the bar, alone. Enjoyed a delicious Sunday brunch a week ago at Trattoria Toscana in Middletown. My friend lives further down the shore and I'm from Northern New Jersey so it was a perfect halfway point. We were disappointed to see so many empty tables not filled by locals to enjoy this amazing brunch in this beautiful location. We were very excited to try this new restaurant. We heard mixed reviews, but we always go to new places with an open mind. The ambience was nice and we were greeted warmly. I try not to give low ratings to new restaurants but I left feeling so uneasy, I wanted to share my experience. We were 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 9 &6). The waiter came and let us know that they did not have any children's menus, but they did offer a few things such as chicken fingers, penne, vodka, etc. After we looked through the menu when the waiter returned, I asked if he could do spaghetti and meatballs for my son, and he said he was unsure but offered a Bolognese as an alternative, to which we agreed. My other son ordered the penne vodka that he mentioned when he initially told us about the kids meals. When we got the check, we realized that both of our children were charged for full adult entrées, around $25 each. When I asked the server about the pricing he said, "Well they ordered full entrees." I reminded him that he offered us penne vodka as an option, and that I asked for spaghetti and meatballs for my child, and he offered the Bolognese as an option. He never told us that those were both going to be adult meals. His response was something along the lines of "Well they wrapped it up to take home, they can eat the rest later." When he returned with our credit card and could see I was visibly annoyed he apologized for the miscommunication. It was concerning that he didn't work to make the situation better. The food was decent, but definitely did not compare to other local Italian places in a similar price range. This restaurant has some work to do, for sure. read more

This used to be a Chinese restaurant and it was very obvious upon walking in that it still had the same feel. Even so, I do not criticize it heavily for that fact. We had a reservation and got sat immediately. They only had one waiter working for the WHOLE RESTAURANT. You heard that right, ONE. We got our order for our appetizers in and were left waiting forever. There were not many people in the restaurant either. The dishes looked nice and appetizers tasted good. When our entrees eventually made their way out of the kitchen, we were disappointed with average food at an expensive price. I had five minuscule raviolis on my plate and that was my whole "meal" at $20+. Overall, very disappointed due to expensive food with average taste. Never coming back. I don't usually hate restaurants but I HATE this one. Save your money and go somewhere else! read more

Everything was delicious and made fresh. The minestrone soup was the best I've ever had. The staff were friendly and very efficient.

The food was good, not great. The prices were outrageous, apparently carried over from thier original place on the other side of the Arthur Kill. Some customers seemed to be aware of them because of the other location. There was only one server for entire restaurant. Although the food was good, he had too many tables resulting in slow service.
