So this was the first time we tried this restaurant for a delivery and had the Margarita and the Stephanie pizzas. Having been to Naples and had eaten Italian pizza I must admit I was a bit skeptical that even with their advertised VPN certification that it would come close to the real thing. Well cancel that trip to Italy - (at least to eat pizza.) This pizza is the real deal. The crust - the sauce - the mozzarella - exquisite!!! Both were so delicious and what other restaurant double boxes their pizza and tells you how to heat up the leftovers??? As if there would be any leftovers??? Well done - Piatto moves into my #1 pizza position! Cannot recommend it highly enough...

We had a bad experience at a previous estimate restaurant and never got our food. We stumbled upon this pizza place and went in so hungry! They have a saying in Italian that says "that you do not age while you are eating". Our waitress Shelby was amazing! She promptly brought us waters and our much needed adult beverages. We ordered a lunch special which was a 9 inch pizza and a salad. We both got the caprese salad. It was incredible! For pizza (see pictures for all) we got the Sicilian and the white pizza with Canadian bacon. Both were incredible along with the service! We recommended this place!

The weekly special... basic pizza plus chicken and roasted red peppers.

Touring the Maritime provinces on holiday this week. After a few too m at seafood meals, we were in the mood for pizza. We love the brick oven fired Neopolitan style and we're excited the find thus place. The restaurant itself is charming with photos from Italy and several Italian scooters lying about. I wish I liked the pizza more but it was a bit bland. The crust was perfectly cooked with balanced flavors and texture. The toppings were sparse and honestly lacking in flavor. The arugula on my husbands was wilted. The chicken in mine was dry. My son, save the lack of cheese, did enjoy his. But he is a 12 year old boy who will eat lots and lots of anything if hungry enough.

Another great spot in Halifax! Piatto was right down the street from my hotel (Westin) and we strolled down for a tasting dinner with some of my local friends. You know a place is good when the locals bring you. Tons of great wood fired pizza. Their oven is NO joke & all of their restaurants use "ingredients and procedures protected by the Italian governing association so you taste a "true Neapolitan pizza the way you would in Naples, Italy. Piatto is the first pizzeria in Atlantic Canada to receive the prestigious VPN-certification from Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN)." We tried pretty much every pizza they have as well as they their Charcuterie plate and the meatballs - oh my gosh, all were great. I loved the open atmosphere of the place - super casual but also upscale. Their pizza oven is a beautiful sight to behold and almost a work of art. Their wine selection is great too - we tried several different bottles because, let's face, I wasnt driving! I tried their Amarone del Vallipocelli and the Poggio al Tufo Rompicollo Sangiovese / Cab Sauv. - both from Tommasi Family Estates (which I've visited in Italy!) - loved both!! Don't miss this spot if you are in Halifax..... or St. Johns or Moncton, New Brunswick, or Charlottetown, PEI.

My girlfriends and I decided we were going to try a new restaurant every other weekend. We work near Piatto and that was going to be first on our list. This was when it first opened - things came up and our plans went downhill. But - last weekend we started it back up again and Piatto was suggested right away! The restaurant itself is very nice - they did very well with the layout and décor. There is plenty of comfortable seating and you can even watch them as they wood-oven-cook your pizza! (or somebody else's) I found their service awesome! From suggesting wine and offering samples, giving their advice on menu options and ensuring everything with our meal was perfect; the service here cannot be compared. Not only was our servicer keeping an eye on our table; a woman seemed to be the manager was also roaming the floors ensuring everything was going smoothly. We started with the "Salumeria Piatto" - which a essentially an Italian meat and cheese plate with olives, roasted red peppers and garlic flat bread. It's a great plate to share! I made a poor pizza choice. I don't even remember the name of it, and I don't see it on their online menu. But - it was very bland. It was a "white pizza", meaning no tomato sauce with a cream or garlic base instead, with prosciutto and arugula - I think! A friend of mine ordered "Stephanie", which is also a white pizza; with goat cheese, caramelized pears and crispy prosciutto. I totally traded a piece of mine for hers - I got the better end of that deal, because her choice was really, really good. Aahhh, next time! We all saved room for dessert. My girlfriends both ordered the Limoncello tart and said it was delicious and very lemony (it looked a little on the smaller side to me - but with it being lemon it was probably the perfect size!). I ordered the Tiramisu and would order it again. It was a whole bunch of creamy, espresso-y goodness! The prices for the appetizer and the dessert were pretty decent. The pizzas are quite pricey, ranging from about 14-17 dollars each. My meal: spit appetizer (between three), pizza and dessert with one glass of wine, was about $50.00 with tip. Considering the portion sizes and quality of the meal, I'm definitely not complaining - I just wish I made a better pizza choice!

Liquid gold with the pizza. A nice touch

I came here the other week for a work outing. I got a lunch special, which was a personal size pizza and a salad. I haven't stopped raving about it since! I've already made plans for the next pizza I will be trying the next time I'm there. This time I had the pancetta white sauce pizza. I'm not sure what the exact name is, but it was so good! It will be hard to force myself to branch out. I also had the goat cheese beat salad, sans walnuts. It was amazing! My co-worker recommended it, or else I would have been like... beats and goat cheese... are you sure? Trust me, I'm sure. it was a really great mix. My friend was telling me, that they are VPN certified, which means they source their tomatoes from a special place in Italy or somewhere that has volcanic soil. They use a super special wood oven that's also certified. I obviously know lots about this certification. But really, I know that it's special, and you can really taste the quality and care they obviously have for making pizza! The special touches I like: We got a sample of the soup of the day in a little mason jar. I thought that was cute, and a really great idea to get people to test it out before ordering. I went with salad instead of soup on the recommendation of a co-worker. I LOVED that they put Liquid Gold olive oil on the table. I've always wanted to try it out, and buy a bottle, but it's too rich for my blood. After tasting it, I might have to bite the bullet and buy some for special occasions.

Where's the meat? Terrible quality, no toppings, NOT worth $20

Went for a birthday dinner, the atmosphere is kind of bland. Basic tables, strange layout. So zero points for vibe at this place. Never been here before, I asked the server a few questions, She seemed to be indifferent and did not leave anything memorable on us about her. Good points: great latte, perfect tiramisu, nice presentation of the food. Not so hot: $20 pizza that had 3 types of meat that you couldn't find... very sparse toppings for what they charge. Very forgettable pizza. Not worth the $$$! Will not go back.

I am a huge pizza fan so when I saw that this place was going to open in June I was super happy and counting the days until it opened. I finally got to try it out today and my taste buds were in heaven! The service was very friendly. A bit of a wait for the pizza but it was very busy and hey, perfection takes time. ;) I had the lunch special which is a 9" pizza and salad for $12.99. I got the Noce e Arugula salad which has a very creamy and perfectly sharp blue cheese, crispy candied walnuts, dried cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The arugula was super fresh, no wilt at all. For the pizza I got the Americana which is a pepperoni pizza. I think the fact that they cook the pizzas in a wood burning oven really makes a difference to how it tastes. The crust was perfectly done and the sauce was simple but very tasty and there was just the right amount. The pepperoni was cut a nice thickness and it had a very good flavor and was mild. If you want a bit of kick you can put some spicy oil or chilli flakes on top. Dessert.....Oh my. I got the Dolce de Leche tart which was to die for! Chocolate on the inside then topped with a very generous amount of creamy caramel and sprinkled with a bit of shaved sea salt. Sweet and salty. A match made in heaven! I could have eaten ten more of them! I can't wait to go back again to try something else! Give this place a try. You won't be disappointed!

Sapori Italian Street Food - Small but mighty - the profiterole

Halifax has never had a shortage of Italian restaurants, with many of them being regarded among the…read morebest fine dining places in the city for years. And while I was in exile in Ottawa for several years, just the downtown has inexplicably added several more Italian spots. Of those though, it was Sapori's casual, street-food-inspired menu that piqued my interest the most (my condolences to the regrettably-named, Sketti and Ball). One day, my wife and I popped in for dinner after work. The elongated restaurant was decently full between regular diners and an solid showing for a pizza-making class. It happened to be Dine Around, so the arancini and square pizza would have to wait, as if there's one thing I like more than street food, it's a deal! Dine Around menus are typically prix fixe with an assortment of choices, and Sapori's was no different. Choose between a few apps, mains and desserts and voila, you've got yourself a three-course meal for $30. I kept it simple and went with the classics - a Caesar salad to start, spaghetti and meatballs, and a profiterole for dessert. The Caesar was sizeable and serviceable, with no departures from the formula, but no standout twists or quality ingredients here either. Romaine, real pancetta, and crumbled parmesan, which sadly wasn't the real deal Parmigiano Regiano. It was big enough for both my wife and I, which was an unexpected bonus though. Next up was the spaghetti and meatballs, a comfort food classic beloved by both young and old. The al dente spaghetti was evenly coated in the pomodoro sauce, and the two meatballs were saucy, tender and hearty. A solid coating of Parmesan and a sprinkle of parsley completed the picture. The star of the show was a bit of a tease, because there was just one (I get it, food costs, etc), but the profiterole was excellent. The choux pastry was lightly crisp on the outside, with a wonderfully rich vanilla cream inside, and a dusting of confectioners sugar and a caramel drizzle took things up a couple notches. And by "things" I mean "my blood sugar". My next time there found me swinging by for a solo lunch, with their casual fare in my sights. Their lunch deal (slice of pizza + soup or salad + a cookie) was an unreal deal for a place that isn't one of Halifax's dicey pizza points, so I jumped on that. Feeling hungry, and wanting to support them beyond the basic deal, I also tacked on a single arancini and a can of San Pellegrino. For my slice I chose the salsciccia which comes with Italian sausage (are the wires connecting on "salsciccia"?), salami, caramelized onions, and mozza, with a drizzle of honey to top it off. It was a hefty slice, with a thick, airy crust that reminded me of focaccia. The sweet honey paired well with the savoury and salty meats, as well as the lightly sweet and acidic tomato sauce. A solid slice, for sure! The garden salad was a mix of fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and carrot, with an herbaceous vinaigrette to brighten up your palette. I enjoyed the crunch of the sizeable chunks of carrot, in contrast to the more common shredded carrot. The arancini disappeared quickly, as the crispy shell and cheesy rice within begged to be finished in as few bites as possible. A tip of the cap to Sapori for giving my lonely arancini a nice plating with a dollop of tomato sauce to hold it to the plate, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley and parm to top it off. Mid-day, mid-week staffing was minimal, and owner Luca Ferrante took mine and other customers' orders with friendly aplomb. Halifax's fine dining scene has long been dominated by Italian restaurants, but more casual fair like Sapori deserves its own place in the city and our bellies.

Staff were very friendly, but service was somewhat slow and they weren't very busy. The portions…read morewere large and the food was cooked well, but the chicken parm and spaghetti lacked any flavor or depth. Maybe it was an off day. The sausage and mushroom risotto was great! Being a fan of the Rinaldo brothers' previous endeavours of T-Dogs and their farmers market table…read morethat bore their surname and slung hero sandwiches and cannoli, I was both glad and a little disappointed when I heard they were opening shop in the recently-cavated TGFE location on Windsor. Glad because these guys deserve their own space to serve kickass food, but disappointed because I no longer lived around the corner. What a tease. After giving them some time after the initial opening to find their legs, and hoping for the crowds to settle down, my wife and I came by before one of my night shifts, just after they opened for the evening. The space is very much the same as the old TGFE, but updated with new furnishings and a several new coats of paint. It has the very common black/red/white palette, but here it's different than other spots that do it hyper-modern and chic; here it's much more casual and retro with framed family photos, wood paneling painted white, their classic neon sign, and their very, very red booths. Snagging one of the vibrant vinyl seats, I eagerly scoped out the broader offerings that I had been hearing a lot about. While not as compact as many modern restaurants' menus, Rinaldo's is still a mere fraction of the made-for-the-masses bulk of East Side Mario's, with a few each of apps, salads, heroes, general Italian mains, and several pizzas on offer. I'd heard lots of great things about their mozza sticks, so those were a lock, and my wife and I decided to get one more app and to share one of their pizzas, which we had heard were a decent size. The spicy cauliflower sounded interesting, and would constitute the vegetable portion of our meal, albeit a deep fried one. The mozza sticks arrived in quick order, and the cauliflower shortly thereafter. The thick sticks of breaded cheese were definitely heftier than your usual from-frozen pub mozza sticks. Plus the breading had a much better flavour and a sprinkle of parm and parsley rounded them out nicely, because if fried cheese needs a garnish, it's gotta be more cheese. The dipping sauce was dill-tastic and fresh, although I appreciated the stretchy cheese on its own. Cauliflower is hot right now in food circles, but the spicy cauliflower seemed like a bit of a misnomer, as the only heat seemed to come from a light sprinkling of sliced chiles. That said, the breading was nice and crunchy, and the cauliflower inside was surprisingly smooth and nearly creamy, without being a goopy, vegetal mess. The flavours of the other toppings all worked quite well, with the honey, parsley pesto, and pecorino making for a well-balanced dish (sans spice, anyway). Our pizza was a bit of a wait, but it was a sight to behold when it arrived. Topped with pepperoni, roasted garlic, mozza, Parmigiano Reggiano, and wonderful blobs of ricotta, it was big on great flavours. So many dishes, both Italian and otherwise, will throw a bunch of cheeses in a dish just to brag that it's a "X Cheese Dish", but here each stood out and played a part. The cornicione was airy and crispy, although the inner parts of the pie suffered the floppy doom of all thin crust pizzas. It did reheat quite well the next day though; via a frying pan and not the dreaded microwave, naturally. While not perfectly executed, it was a damned good meal with the structure to be even better with some minor polishing. It's worth the hype - go there and keep this place open until I am able to come back again.
