It fits in well on Exchange Street and has a wide variety of fun things including sensory toys, games, purses, plushies, etc etc I was a bit overwhelmed at first because there's so much to see, but if you have time, browsing around is nice. The prices are about what I'd expect for a store in a more touristy area (moderate to high). We enjoyed stopping by and I'd recommend it! read more

I've loved Treehouse Toys since I was 7 years old, back when receiving a new stuffed animal was a once-in-a-while treat; my cousins and I would pop in during the summer and spend hours agonizing over which exact wind-up toy we'd use our 25 cents on. Walking through Treehouse the other day felt like being transported back in time; it was an incredibly nostaglic experience to wander those same aisles of stuffed animals as an adult, being bombarded with velvety toys and bright colors at every turn. What a great toy store! I feel like it's hard to find toy stores anymore, but this one was fantastic. There was a huge variety of toys, from toys for babies and toddlers to art supplies to dress up outfits to Legos for older kids. This place is the place to go for silly toys, retro toys, learning toys and just fun toys/games...everything!!! The place is conveniently located on Exchange St. in the Old Port if you are out wandering around. The downside is if you want to just drive in for this toy store, parking and crowds do not make it a quick trip. We have purchased, books, baby toys and a snoopy's harmonica (for me!) Since the passing of Toys R' Us, it is not easy to find a toy shop these days, which is why I am so glad there are independent shops like Treehouse still out there. This store was so adorable! Set-up for the holidays, the display window featured a toy train and a stuffed animal sleigh led by avocado Santa. Inside, the displays are fully stocked with plush, games and toys for all ages. They had high-end Steiff plush and lower end Squishimals and stocking stuffers. You could easily spend $200 in this store or get a few, little things for under $20. Every time I turned a corner, I saw another cute little toy. As a parent, it was impossible to leave this store without buying something. Will definitely be back. read more

Treehouse Toys has been pretty amazing through COVID. For one, they're one of the only retailers that actually has puzzles in stock (and they're a local business - Bonus!) They keep their FB updated regularly and allow for curbside pickups of their products. In the beginning weeks of COVID, they were even offering an option to "pay what you can" for shipping costs. How extraordinary is that for a local business? Local businesses don't often see the same shipping discounts some of the big box businesses do. I recently placed an order online. The process was smooth and easy. I received a text message shortly after placing my order to let me know it was ready for pickup. When I arrived for back door pickup, I had to call to make sure I was in the right place and the gentleman on the phone was friendly and patient. I'm looking forward to a day when I'll be visiting businesses again because I can't wait to check out this gem that the puzzle shortage of 2020 introduced me to. read more

Nice ambiance. Looked clean and well kept. Window display was nice. Hard to keep 6 feet apart in narrow aisles with COVID, at one point a sales girl walked right up to where I was looking at a item with my daughter and stood right next to us (she was starting to do some re- stocking, I believe) which was definitely within 6 feet. Within 2 feet. We left right after. Not taking any chances. Wish the sales girl would have been more aware/considerate. Wish we could have looked around a little bit more, but that didn't happen. Maybe that was intentional? They did have a sign posted that advised against "dilly dallying." We were only in there a few (less than five minutes.) We ended up not buying anything, but we had wanted to get a trinket for my little girl. I feel bad because usually we love to support small businesses. Sorry we didn't have a better experience. This little store has a great selection of toys and books. The problem is with the customer service, or the lack of it. There were three women behind the counter, chatting with each other. Not one of them was on the floor offering assistance (which can be very important when shopping for children, "What age is this best for", etc.). And when I took my purchase to the counter I might as well have done self-check out as the woman said not a word to me. The selection was incredible and curated with a great eye for authentic and unique toys across a wide array of themes and styles. It was closing when we arrived but could have easily browsed for a long time. Will definitely go back. I love this toy store! It's a perfect example of a locally-owned, small-city toy store. Staff are very friendly and helpful, always engaging in conversation and well-versed in their stock. They carry a great selection of toys for all ages, from infants to toddlers and on up to older kids. Treehouse has some of the big brands you can find at other stores, but also carries a great selection of lesser-known, local and not-quite-so commercial toys. Their prices are a little steep - but not more than I'd expect when shopping locally. I love spending a few extra dollars knowing my money will stay in Portland, support locals and keep our downtown full of adorable shops like this! They also have a really fun selection of books, also for all ages. They highlight Maine authors, and have a fun little reading nook. Great for parents to sit and get a little food in our baby while also reading! They have a bathroom for customers with a changing table too. If you are looking for big-ticket toys or for the newest, hottest toy on the market, you probably won't find it here. But you will find so many fun treasures! It's well-organized, but things are also a bit scattered about in such a way that you experience all sorts of things no matter what part of the store you're in. They have a wide variety of toys, dolls, puppets, books, board games, widgets, gizmos, and gags, for a broad age range, but it's all quality stuff. You can tell that it's curated with care. I was looking forward to taking my daughter to this location from the moment I saw it. I was especially excited about the natural wooden toys and games. Unfortunately upon arriving in the store we became an inconvenience to the staff while they were restocking. We did our best to not touch and stay out of the way but the main staff person would not distance themselves from my little girl while we looked. Perhaps we will try them again when actual store customers are not such a trouble for the employees. Then again we probably won't. read more

This is a magical place. When you enter a toy store like this, you instantly can feel the difference than just being in a toy section at a department store or at a chain store. You can tell that each stuffed animal was placed with care are love. That each game ordered for the shelves, was ordered because of what that game can bring to a child's mind. The thoughtfully merchandised is obviously pieced together by a staff that knows and love children. And that cares about the quality of the toys presented to children. It is true that everything might cost a bit more than if you try to find the same online. But keep in mind that big stores and online stores can order hundreds of one item, which leads to them getting a much steeper discount. A small store does not the space to even stock 500 of the same wooden puzzle to bring down the cost a few dollars. And it is because of stores like this that high quality toys are now found in larger marketplaces. Because a small store believed in their quality and carried them. Keep in mind there are many low priced items in this store. Are your way to a birthday party? You could easily find something wonderful to bring for under $10! You can also find so many wonderful books, from classics to new modern gems! I enjoy knowing that they care about the items they put on their shelves, so I know I am getting a quality gift. Not to mention the staff will gladly help any adult having a hard time to sort out what exactly a child may want! Treehouse Toys is what a toy shop should be. There are two stores in the Treehouse Toys world, and they're both awesome. I like small independent toy stores almost as much as I like small independent book stores. You can tell that everything inside has been looked at by someone who really cares, and the likelihood of finding someone knowledgeable to help you is much greater than in one of those large corporate chain stores. The likelihood of finding something that's better quality and higher priced is pretty good too, but don't automatically assume that everything at Treehouse is expensive. There are some bargains to be had if you look around and there's enough merchandise here to keep you busy for as long as you want. If you're in need of toys for a special child of any age and you're anywhere near the Old Port, Treehouse is a store that you don't want to miss. I've been in here a few times, and I can totally agree with the Duncan Toys assessment from another review. I love the variety and the fact that they carry quite a few "green" brands. The reason for the dock in stars is for the multiple signs requesting you to "not share germs" and to "supervise your children". It just feels so high and mighty. It makes me wonder if the owners have kids of their own. Surely the only people who need those signs are the ones not reading them to begin with? There's not too much in here for the little littles, but it's the perfect spot to find a nice gift for school aged kiddos. We have a blast checking out all of the Lego sets! read more

I went there last week and was yelled at vehemently to leave the store and I had a trespassing order to not come there. I tried to tell them it was a mistaken identity but they were very threatening. As others have said, the store is expensive. However, they have toys and games I have not seen elsewhere in town. I have purchased some games for me (Quarto) and toys for my daughter here. They have a smaller selection of good quality goods. I would not describe the products here as the typical disposable variety; these toys can be handed down and re-used because they will likely last through more than one kid. read more

Loved this toy store! Stopped by on a rainy day when I was visiting Portland w my 6 year old son. If only he weren't with me, I could have gotten all my Christmas shopping done here! Lots of fun unique and educational toys, all at reasonable prices. I'm used to small toy stores jacking up prices, but the few things I compared to amazon were the same price or even a bit cheaper. Our favorite finds were all the ravensberger puzzles and small sized games, perfect for our trip. We ended up buying the Peanut Butter and Jelly game (in a mini lunchbox tin), a dog popper and a schleich pug. Definitely worth a visit! read more
