Here we have the most Center City bike shop in Philadelphia. At 19th and Chestnut, if you work in Center City and want a repair while at work, Breakaway is your best option. The good: Breakaway seems to cater to a wide range of bicyclists, from commuters, to casual riders to enthusiasts. Frequently, I'll see an enthusiast/regular purchasing another expensive part, bike, what have you. However, they treat all types of riders with respect and dispense advice as needed. Maybe a more experienced rider would be offended, but they're just trying to get you on your way safely. For the rest of us, their prices are perhaps a tad on the more expensive side but comparable to major neighborhood bike shops in West, South, Fairmount, etc. Nothing outrageous, in my opinion. They do most repairs quickly and efficiently. They have several staff members available throughout the day and can handle most simple repairs at the same time or same day (depending on busy-ness) and most more major repairs, part ordering excepted, very quickly. I've had wheel truing done within 20 minutes, which when compared to other stores, is incredibly fast. The bad: They're slightly disorganized. I've picked up my bike same day and have been told it "wasn't done yet" even though a) I was told it would be done (I need it to go home) and b) was a pretty quick repair. Eventually the store manager stepped in (because he instructed the repair) and found my bike (repaired). No problem. The attitude problem is noted on other reviews. Like any place, it depends on the person. I've experienced a wide range of folks here, from nice/helpful, to a little off-putting. I think it's difficult for everyone to assess the level of experience relative to the customer/employee and perhaps that comes out in some users experiences. This place is amazing! The customer service, especially from Ellie, was awesome. My bike had been sitting in storage and I had no desire to ride. I brought it in for a new seat post, and we ended up tuning up my bike as well as helped accessorize. Now I'm so excited to ride. I think everything was very reasonably priced and the service was super fast and friendly. They take care of their customers and don't nickel and dime you. The staff at Trek was super helpful throughout the process of my order. I ordered online and the bike was shipped to the shop where they put it together for me. Once it was done, I was able to pick it up and be out of the shop in about 3 mins. The good: I've bought three bikes from Breakaway Bikes. They're close by and convenient for inner city commuters like me. They also offer a great deal where if you buy a bike from them, they do free maintenance on it for 10 years. Some of their staff are even really nice and will do big favors for you. The bad: Some of their staff are super condescending and rude. It's quite common for bike shops to have rude, condescending and snobbish people so this is to be expected, especially in Philly, where everyone is an a**hole. They also close early, at 6, which is inconvenient for most people who get off work at 5 or 6. They could stretch it just an hour longer and probably do more business. My last three bikes were stolen, as is common in Philly, no matter how rock solid your security is. They're good at making your bike as secure as possible but in most cases, somehow, something happens one day and mysteriously your bike is completely stolen, like mine was again today. I went by there after work and they were closed, it even looked like they were closing for good, but they weren't. There were 5 people in there and I knocked on the door to make sure they'd be open the next day so that I could buy another bike from them, and the guy very rudely told me "We're closed" and shut the door. Wow... UPDATE: I'll give 'em 4 stars instead of 3 because 75% of the time I go there they are really good to me. I just bought another bike to replace my stolen one. UPDATE 2: Meh, down to 2 stars. They some really rude and unhelpful people who have no idea what customer service is. They have a bad attitude and act like you're just in the way, no desire to solve your problem. I bought a $720 bike from them and wanted my front wheel locked but they said it can't be locked because it's a full through axle. He sold me a hassle, a cable for my lock which is really inconvenient to have to carry around. I look up locks that Pinhead makes for wheels and they DO have a wheel lock for through axles. They exist. He could have looked this up and known it and ordered one for me and made an extra $50 for the company. Why are bike shop people inherently jerks? read more

Nice digs with a good selection of bikes - especially if you're into Giant. Had a chance to pop by here to check out the selection and compare it to some of NY's more notable shops (Bicycle Habitat, Toga/Gotham, Sid's etc.). Honestly nothing here paled in comparison to what we get in NYC relatively speaking and the folks here all very friendly and eager to help customers who walked in. Bonus points for carrying the Cervelo line. Some of the featured road/tri bikes were making me salivate (and calling me to switch from my Cannondale preference ... I must resist!). But seriously, this is a pretty decent shop with a good selection of items. read more

I purchased a bike from Breakaway and overall my experiences have been great. Bikes are a lot like cars and after purchasing a Scott mountain bike here getting good service and maintenance post purchase due to trail riding was a necessity. They fixed my snapped chain in minutes no charge, I bent my rim and had a new one rebuilt on my spokes and hub for a reasonable price. They set me up with a tubeless rim and tire combination and a stronger front rim to get the most out of my purchase. They've got tons of bikes and brands to pick from and can get you whatever you need in a few business days if they do not have it in stock. Its a younger staff so if you're used to working with baby boomers at your local bike shop they may come off a bit hip to you. If you need a down town bike shop in Philadelphia that will provide outstanding service Breakaway is your place. read more

After Trek bought the shop, they broke the commitments that Breakaway made to their customers (specifically, basic tuneups were included for bikes purchased at the shop - Trek now wants to charge me for them). I'm not sure whether that behavior is legal, but in my opinion it's unethical. read more

I bought my bike here awhile back. I was looking for a bike that could get me to and from work. They have a solid selection of road bikes from big named manufacturers. I ended up getting a Giant bike and it was a little bit above my budget, but what ended up selling me was the service plan. Bikes purchased from breakaway have free lifetime servicing. I've had my bike tuned up every now and then. There usually is a small wait time and the tune up takes about 5-10 minutes (depending on what needs to be done). I came here to buy some cycling shoes. I had a very nice guy help me and he showed me the options I had. He was very persistent on upselling me to the more expensive shoes. Came on very strong but I still went for it because he said they were the best. I also told me that there was a 10 day return policy guarantee. No problems really with my first interaction. The shoes in the end hurt my feet. They made my toes go numb. I came back in 6 days to return them and was met with such rude attitude towards my return. I asked to return them and through every step of the return process I was met with more questions of trying to persuade me not return them. I decelerated every maneuver they had and in the end got my refund. I said thank you and told they guy to have a nice day and was met with a stone cold glare and literally no response. I didn't like the shoes. So sue me! I would have kept on being a customer at the store for other biking needs, but after this no thank you. Basically they are your friend when selling you something. But hate you when you return something??? No "I'm So sorry these weren't the right fit ma'am. Can I help you find anything else?" (End with nice smile) Hipsters who think they are gods gift to bicycle merchandise. No thanks. My chain broke on an afternoon where it was pouring rain, and since Breakaway Bikes was the closest bike store to where this happened, I stopped in to get a new chain. I was able to swallow the fact that I'd be paying 16 bucks for a completely run-of-the-mill chain, but not the fifteen dollars they wanted to charge for putting it on. The employee said, "Well, putting a chain on takes time, and it's work, so..." but I was already out the door, cursing myself for not having my tools on me. I ended up walking to Trophy Bikes (in the rain) and paying fifteen bucks for a new chain that they installed for me. In five minutes. Suck it, Breakaway. I don't know whether they're any good for new bikes, although my guess is that they're a rip-off unless you're completely helpless and willing to pay someone an exorbitant amount of money to fix a flat tire. They're definitely too expensive if you can do it yourself. Steer clear. read more

The bf bought a really nice mountain bike here. Took it in for a tuneup. Afterward, something started acting wonky. Brought it back. the employee who helped him said, "Well, this isn't one of our bikes or I'd do a tune-up, but I can help tweak it a little to get it going." He said it as though he was doing a favor. My bf pointed out the "www.breakawaybikes.com" painted on the bike frame and explained that it WAS one of their bikes. We had an issue, I spoke with the shop manager, he stopped everything he was doing and he made it right. There was no conflict, no arguing over what caused what, nothing. He listened, fixed the bike, offered an apology and sent me on my way after re-tuning the bike and truing the wheels. 5 stars for the BEST customer service I've received at ANY bike shop in the city. These guys know their stuff and will pass on the knowledge to you. You can save 5 bucks here or there by purchasing online, but you cant put a price tag on good customer service and shop knowledge. I am a casual biker. I really enjoying cruising around the city checking out people and looking at all the weird stuff this great city has to offer. Occasionally I'll ride the Schukyll trail but the vast majority of my riding is low impact high relaxation. My cousin is a very avid rider and when I first got my bike he pointed me towards Breakaway if I ever needed anything. After a year of riding I hadn't gotten a flat, hadn't messed up the gears, and the breaks were fine. Then one day I decided to ride my bike to work. I locked it up at the corner of 16th and Chestnut and after a hard day in the office I come out to find that some jagaloon had stolen my front wheel. I thought that it was such a high foot traffic area no one would have the gall to boost a wheel in public. Welllll lessons are meant to be learned and I certainly did that night. I rolled the bike a few blocks to Breakaway and told them what happened. They explained to me the benefits of a reenforced tire and that they could move it to the back as that's where most flats occur. I then asked for a tuneup since the bike was already in the shop and all said and done it came out to $125 which was the price I was finding online just for the replacement wheel. What I like most about this place though are the workers. They are hilarious, friendly, and highly skilled. I've stopped into a few other shops in the city for chain grease and a mirror and they acted like since I wasn't a courier I didn't even deserve to own a bike. Give me a break my man I'll slap that pack of American Spirits right out of your sleave roll. I'm actually looking forward to going back here the next time I need anything. read more

Awful service! When all bikes shops offer the same thing, it really comes down to quality service, and Breakaway Bikes sure knows how to treat their patrons poorly. I've been in here three times, as it's centrally located in Philadelphia and each time has been a poor experience. The mechanics are rude to the people who walk in and spend their time acting like a bunch of children. The people working the front of the store are no better -- they like to treat customers like children and they'll make quips before walking away without offering much assistance. They did have some cheap cycling shoes though and I did a quick fix on my bike at the shop before a triathlon, so if you don't care about snobby mechanics and rude sales staff then go for it. Otherwise, try one of the other shops in the city such as Philadelphia Bikesmith or Bicycle Therapy. read more

Breakaway is my go-to bike shop in the city. The mechanics, Jonas and Sean, are two of the best around, and downright great guys. When I went in to have my derailleur hanger fixed (they took care of it in an hour), Sean noticed my headset was loose and fixed it right then and there, gratis. They have a great selection of bikes, clothing, parts, and tools, and they're always happy to special order something if they don't have it in stock. Joe and Richard, the coaches, are knowledgeable and accessible, and the RPM cycling classes and performance testing have been a revelation. A bike fit by Joe was the best cycling purchase I've made since beginning to ride. In addition to all of this, Breakaway is a great presence in the Philly cycling community, sponsoring not only the Quaker City Wheelmen and T3 Triathlon clubs, but also the Penn and Temple collegiate teams. As far as some of the other "reviews" go, I have no idea how they got the idea that Breakaway is expensive and elitist, but it's not. They sell great bikes for reasonable prices and provide great service at practical rates. read more

I don't normally write bad reviews but these guys refused to work on my bike, then made some smug comment about my bike. I came in with a flat tire. They told me my steer stem was a little too high which I am fully aware of. Yes, I know the risk, Yes, i've been told before, Yes, I am aware that it's not safe. All of this I have been told before, but NEVER have I've been told we won't work on your bike unless we lower your stem. I didn't seem like a problem as long as they were willing to lend me the 6mm allen wrench to raise it up again when their done. They recommended this but they weren't even willing to lend me the wrench. Then they made smug comment, "get a bike your size." I am no novice to bikes and their is a reason I don't ride my $1000 dollar FUJI to work. I was in desperate need of getting my tire fixed so I can ride home and they guys made me so angry that they won't fix my tire because of half an inch of a steering stem sticking out too far. I'll go back to Performance Bicycle on Columbus Blvd any day because they treat me like a human being and they've always helped me out when in a jam. read more

I'm neither wealthy, nor a masochist, and this is one of the best bike shops in the city. Their parts prices are competitive (even compared to harris cyclery and other internet-order places once shipping is factored in) and their service is meticulous to the point of OCD. One thing about this shop that I absolutely value above all else is their sense of honesty, which is probably a good part of why there are negative reviews on here. No one wants to hear that their baby is a lemon, but you're better off blaming the thieves on craigslist or the wretched department stores. If you want a shop to let you ride off with something that could get you killed without saying anything, you may want to try Performance instead. read more

Left work one afternoon and found my rear bike tire was flat. No big deal, I just wheeled it up to Breakaway. In a matter of minutes, my tire was fixed. I had been riding in second gear because my first gear had been taken off by another shop because it kept catching when I pedaled. The mechanic hooked me up with first gear again, which made me all smiles, since riding in second was really giving my knee some trouble. Unfortunately, I got another flat on the ride home on the very same day, so I'll be back to Breakaway in the near future. Every time I am here , i drift into dreaming bout basking in the glow of a Yellow Jersey some day. Even though that might never come into fruition for me , Breakaway is certainly geared to provide all the tools for an avid bicycle enthusiast. On contrary to most bike shop experiences in philly where the staff is curt and inhospitable, visiting breakaway is so refreshing. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful and never try to bilk their customers. They also stock gear at reasonable prices. They provide tune ups and basic fixes for lazy clienteles like me and professional advise to competitive riders. Also in the back they carry out spinning classes where you can sync up your road bike and try to maximize your wattage and improve your cadence. I blame places like breakaway for never bothering enough to spend too much time fixing my own bike. The affable staff is reason enough to have breakaway help us back in the velocipede era ! read more

After a few instances of success at this bike shop (i.e. picking up small supplies - including a pretty sweet hamburger bell), I can no longer withstand the condescending tone of the staff. I got a new road bike here, and the experience was absolutely fabulous. i couldn't decide between two options... and the sales folks here were uber professional, informed, and gave me the space I needed to ponder my decision. They built three bikes for me to try... allowed me to try couple of the bikes multiple times for comparison purposes, and also gave very helpful tips. it's also cool to watch them put the bikes together, or work on the bikes that people have brought in for repairs / tune-up, etc. they were attentive and helpful to all of their customers while i was there waiting for different bikes to be built. thumbs up. read more

First I would like to mention that Jeff and David are great. The management is fair and the service of the techs is outstanding. I entered the store with very little knowledge on bikes. All my questions (there were many) were answered. I got a flat day one, and they fixed it no problem ( glass filled Philadelphia streets). Let's move on to the bike. I bought a Checkpoint ALR5. It is a quick versatile bike. The Shimano 105 groupset makes it quick and comfotable on the city streets of Philadelphia. I pass cars all day long, and I am only passed by cyclist when tired or distracted. Furthermore the 45 mililmeter tire clearance makes it versatile and adequate on the trail. More importantly the relaxed geometry lets you ride comfortably for hours. I did 65 miles today and could keep going if I had more time. The Checkpoint ALR5 is an all around performer. It will make the perfect commuter and trail bike. But as with any review there is a down side. Seriously Trek, upgrade the paint it is scratched too easily...Seriously. read more

I was walking around Center City and couldn't believe how wonderful the weather was for a bike ride. Then I remembered I had a bike back in my apartment with deflated tires. I popped open Google Maps, and Breakaway Bikes was one of the few shops still opened so I dropped by to find myself a pump. The choice was easy - a $35 or a $45 pump. I chose the former, and even that was a bit pricey for a pump. I checked online later and it was the same price on Amazon (although Amazon had other cheaper ones available). I also looked around for a decent helmet - the cheapest one was $35 with the other ones as high as +$180. I take down one star because there's not enough variety here - at least in terms of price points. There were only two pumps, which is fine since it's just a pump. However, there was only one $35 helmet, with the other ones way too expensive for a recreational bicyclist such as myself. Oh yeah, the pump worked as advertised. Easy peasy. Breakaway is by far my favorite bike shop in the city. The staff is warm and welcoming, unlike many of the other shops in Philadelphia. The owner, Joe, is present and helpful, not just with purchases but training advice as well. Sean is the only person other than myself that I would trust wrenching on my bike. Ive shopped at nearly every other bike shop in the city and Breakaway is still my favorite. They almost always have what Im looking for and if not they special order it and its there in a jiffy. The prices are more than reasonable and I would recommend it to everyone from the beginner to the cat 1 racer. People complaining about paying $16 for a flat change: Time is money and tubes are money. If you ride a bike you should know how to change a flat and be prepared to do so. Great service. Had a flat, so I went in to get a tube replaced. As soon as I entered, I was greeted immediately. The mechanic took his time and checked the inner tire for any glass or anything that may have got stuck in there. $4.99 (front) or $9.99 (rear) + cost of the tube. read more

It kept falling off because it wasnt bent the correct way to be mounted on my bike. not only did these guys fix my bike up quickly, but they were VERY professional with their approach. This is a primo bike store with great customer service and a beautiful layout. I like coming here. I know Mark for a long time now, and there is always a smile from all the other technicians. They are super quick and know what's up. I had a tune up a while back and they didn't push me into getting a new bike although mine is practically falling apart. I want to run mine into the ground. They do the best they can (they must cringe!) and let me know what to expect. I like that they rent bikes, service the bikes they sell, and run lessons. Also, they are convenient. Breakaway is, in my experience, the least pretentious bike shop in Philadelphia. I first shopped there this spring, with very little knowledge of bikes, or even a good idea of what I wanted. All if the employees I dealt with were extremely patient and helpful. This was a huge difference from VIA, who were pushy to the point of rudeness, and Performance, who essentially ignored me until my boyfriend asked for help. Since then, I have visited the shop frequently with my boyfriend, who had them help him with his own custom build. I have never found them to be anything other accommodating and professional. I wouldn't trust any other shop in Philly to work on my bikes or dispense advice. They may not be the cheapest shop in the city and they may not have a lot of used bikes, but you get what you pay for and in that respect, Breakaway far exceeds other bike shops. Also, the "fact" that Brett D.works at Breakaway is a shock to me, as I live with him, and had no idea! read more

It's taken me quite a while to write this review, but while I've been procrastinating, I've gone in the shop many more times and feel even more confident in my five-star rating. (Actually, I'm almost embarrassed how many times I've gone in, gotten help, and haven't paid.) I first went into Breakaway Bikes late last spring when I was just beginning to think about getting a bike. Even though I was explicit about not being ready to buy, their salesman spent the better part of an hour with me, asking me about how I thought I might use a bike and telling me all about the different things I would need to know. (I grew up riding a ten-speed that I think my parents (er, Santa) got me at K-Mart. And that is the extent of my riding experience.) The salesman put no pressure on me to make a purchase. Months later, when I was ready to buy, I went back to Breakaway, even though my friends were urging me to get a used bike instead. Being a bike novice, though, I wouldn't know the difference between a good used bike or a crappy used bike... or how to fix anything that went wrong with either. And, truth be told, I hate fixing things. So there's that. The staff helped me pick out a bike that, two months later, still seems perfect for me. Because they didn't have my size, they built the bike and had it ready the next day. At my request, they cut down the handlebars and told me to bring it back in a few weeks later for a tune-up. Since the purchase, I've gone for *three* adjustments in two months time, because a few things needed to be tweaked. Then I went in so they could show me how to take off my front tire. Then I went in for air, and they showed me how to do that. Today, I went in for more air, and one of the staff (I should really know his name for the number of times we've interacted) said, "Here, let me do that for you. Wouldn't want you to get all dirty pumping them up." Despite how many times I've gone in to take advantage of their ten-year service plan and how guilty I feel when they immediately recognize me, they always seem eager to attend to my concerns and ask me how I'm liking the bike. They've always had the work done by the time we agree upon. And when I leave, with apologies for being such a needy biker, they tell me just to stop by to say hi, even if the bike's riding well. Like others have said, they can be expensive for things like changing a flat, but I cannot recommend them highly enough for a new bike purchase. From when one of the street car rails taco'd my front tire (yay, Philly Streets!!), then when my back tire was stolen, (yay, Philly Streets!?) to a gear and break cable overhaul, and most recently to a simple chain replacement.
