This shop did me a great favor that other shops were not able to do. I explained to the service guy that I needed them to help me finish up my brake installation that I had trouble completing. It was probably a simple job, but another shop wanted to charge $20 for brake install, another $20 for lever install, and that was PER brake ($60+ total). I asked the guy at Bicycle Sport Shop how much he would charge to work on my bike with the half-way job, he looked at my unfinished work and said $20 to finish it up for me. I was expecting something higher, but he was very reasonable in understanding my dilemma and not charging me an arm/leg for the service. I will definitely go to these professional folks more often in the future! read more

Some of the nicest most helpful people I have ever dealt with! I went in with a broken chain hoping for an easy fix(because of course I'm between paydays) and spoke with Aaron in the service department. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Not only did he repair my chain for next to nothing, he checked out my old ass ride and gave a it gave it quick once over.. Tightened this... Lubed that.. And gave me back a basically brand new bike! I am new to cycling and bought a Specialized Expert from the Research shop. Everything went great with the purchase - this review is for a clinic after the purchase. When told they offered lessons for new riders, I signed up for a private lesson with Laura. I am so glad I did. Laura was very good at assessing my abilities quickly and adapting the lesson on the fly. I appreciated her finding out what my goals were prior to starting the lesson. I'm new to cycling, but not to competitive sports. My goal was to learn correct posture/positions so I can start training right away for metrics rides. Laura did a superb job showing me what to do and what not to do and she did it in a way that connected with the sports I am already familiar with so I could grasp the concepts quickly. Best part - her one-on-one tips as she rode beside me provided great feedback. I could immediately feel an improvement to my power output and my comfort when she gave a correction. Well worth the time and effort! She also followed up with a summary email of all the tips she covered during the lesson. That was much appreciated and unexpected. I do triathlons, and wanted to get a bike fit and the price they offer is reasonable. The manager and everybody else was extremely nice, the problem came when we needed to find a shorter stem for my bike and we also had to cut the aerobars on my bike ( I know it's labor ). We stopped the bike fit and I took the bike to service to see an estimate on how much it would be cut the bars, they wanted to charge me $160 .... ???? He said he had to change cables and do some extra stuff, that I knew it wasn't necessary. I didn't leave him my bike and took it somewhere else. Huge disappointment ! ! ! On 9/09/2019 I went in to the store to buy a bike. I was able to finally afford a good bicycle. The sales rep was nice and we figured out he needed to order the bike I wanted from another store, he had it brought over. I have always loved the Specialized brand so, I was very happy and excited to get it. The next day I went to pick it up and the sales rep looked at GR as gray not GY. I decided that I really did not want a green bike. I had the manager call me and she said "sorry we made a mistake, I can give you a little discount on the next bike above that one". I guess this is how they UP SALE you. She also informed me that "you can only get Specialized bikes from dealers like us". You ma'am are a lair. I called Specialized directly and they said they could sale me the bike but they must ship it to a dealer for them to assemble and it wont cost anything extra its all included. This company is unethical and you shouldn't waste your money or time on them, But, if you really want a Specialized bike go through the corp website in CA. they can ship it to Buda bike shop so you can avoid these guys all together. I've always been treated fairly and honestly here... but unlike my favorite local shops, they don't tend to really go above and beyond. I've used BSS for minor work on my secondary bike (a somewhat unusual shaft-drive commuter). The mechanic let me come behind the desk and watch what he was doing, which was very helpful when it came time to work on the bike on my own. However, they've consistently charged me for labor in cases where other shops have waived those fees (such as installation of new tubes and tires purchased at that same shop). I've also purchased accessories. I'm extremely happy with the headlight they suggested (a Nite Rider MiNewt Mini-USB)... but when it eventually broke and I came back to exchange it, they indicated that they would charge for their time shipping it back to the manufacturer, and suggested that I'd be better off doing so myself. This isn't completely unfair, but when I was doing a similar exchange (of a failed taillight) at Jack and Adam's, they took a new one off the shelf and swapped them out no-questions-asked; comparatively speaking, the experience left me disappointed. (There are other competitors with unconditional return policies as well -- see for instance REI). On the plus side, BSS has a quite good selection of bikes (rather than focusing only on racing or sport-centric models, as some of their competitors do), and a moderately good selection of accessories. If they matched some of their competitors in maintaining a focus on delighting the customer rather than nickel-and-diming, they might be on my short list. read more

My experience at the bicycle sport shop could NOT have gone any better. This is the best in store experience I've ever had of any store I've ever been too. I am a beginner and just bought my girlfriend and I put first mountain bikes. The staff was super helpful, patient, and never made me feel like they were up selling me on any products. I ended up spending a little more than anticipated but it was because they asked me the correct qualifying questions to ensure I got the right bike that I could grow into, not grow out of very quick. Two thumbs up to the employees of this store. You can find products a little cheaper on-line but in my opinion it's totally worth buying from them to help keep this business going. Just bought a bike and accessories and couldn't be more pleased with the service at Bicycle Sport Shop. While I was an avid cyclist as a youth, I hadn't done any cycling as an adult so I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted. John Harrell was 'lucky' enough to guide me through the process. He was very patient and very informative. He didn't try to oversell and just gave me the honest information I needed to make my selection. I bought a great Specialized hybrid at a reasonable price, but after a long ride, I thought the Trek I was comparing it to would be a more comfortable ride for me. Brought it back and got the Trek instead w/ in the 7 day satisfaction guaranteed window--no problem!! Super happy with the Trek and especially the exceptional service--epitomizing the reasons why I chose to shop at the local bike shop and not online or in some big box type or chain sport/camping store, IMHO. My wife and I just bought 2 bikes here and had an amazing experience! The staff here is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. During our many visits here, we spoke and worked with Baily, Simone, Dino, Zach and Gabe. Last Saturday we purchased 2 bikes and 4 days later realized we had did not make the best decision possible given where we were going to ride them, so after a couple test drives, we brought both bikes back and exchanged for different models. The staff was understanding and followed through on their 7 day ride policy with no problem at all. I cannot say enough good things about this bike shop and the people who work here and represent it. These guys were really helpful. I'd brought my bike in after shipping it from Ireland to have it reassembled. They did it for $35 and made some recommendations but didn't try to upsell me on stuff I didn't need. Then a couple of weeks later I had to come back to get some gear to make my bike safe for night time cycling. My chain had recently come off and I'd reattached it; they checked it out free of charge to make sure it was attached properly. I made it clear I was on a budget and they guy assisted me helped me find gear within my budget constraints. I've moved down in South Austin but will be going to their S. I have bought bikes there before. Good service know there stuff. They charge for the service and I am fine with that. I recently went there to buy a bike seat to attach to a mountain bike I bought there. Bought it for 250 went home. Discovered it would not fit the bike. Brought it back. They then had a different seat for 150 less. Bought it refunded me the difference. Then was told not in stock after credit went through. Told it was in another store. I was to get a call the same day to pick up. I called asking if I could pick up at other location. They said they were with a customer but would call either way. No call. Never picked up. Brought back receipt. Now say they can't verify I never picked up so won't refund. 3 trips no seat. They keep my Cash. I need 3 bikes at Christmas. They lost my business. read more

I wanted to share our great experience in your shop on Sunday late afternoon. It was our first time in a bike shop ever and I had brought my son's 24" bike in for a new tire and new tread and then a quote to fix-up for the spring. The service guy was awesome and took the time to figure out exactly what we needed and then gave some suggestions about a larger bike. We have a nice one but haven't allowed the 13-year-old free reign of it because we knew it was expensive but gathering dust. We will be bringing it in soon for a tune up and/or attend one of your classes because I agree, he needs the bigger size! I can't keep up with how fast he's growing! I wish I could remember his name. Simply go here. I started commuting to work and did a lot of research to prepare myself for the right bike and stuff to buy. This went above and beyond in helping me prepare when i thought i was prepared. Any items i wasn't as familiar with they had answers to the questions and great suggestions, they taught me basic maintenance and helped me go from newb to going to survive, and even sized me perfect for my bike and went over my posture. Brought a bike I had assembled myself into their service department because there was something wrong with the front tire. Admittedly I don't know much about bikes, but I felt like I did a pretty good job with the assembly, as it arrived mostly assembled except for the front tire. The guy barely glanced at my bike, and told me they'd need to completely disassemble it and rebuild it for at least $60 because people never do it right. He was firm on that price and wouldn't even look at it to see if it was a smaller repair that was needed, rather than a total rebuild. He said most people will just "pay whatever it takes" to have it done right. Had he looked at it for five seconds, he would have seen that the front tire was bent and that I needed to return the bike to where I purchased it. (I didn't notice that because I don't know anything about bikes.) I felt that something was off about this, so I took my bike to another shop down the road. The guy there looked at it for five seconds and told me the wheel was bent. He recommended I return it, and even wrote up an invoice/estimate. Because of his help, I easily returned the bike to where I had purchased it, and went back and bought a new bike from his shop. I feel like this shop tried to take advantage of my lack of knowledge and tried to overcharge me. I'd be careful of their service department and go elsewhere. read more

It all depends on who you get at Bicycle Sport Shop. I've had some really helpful service techs that walk me through choices. I've also had some horribly pretentious guys. For example, one guy proceeded to tell me how much he rode and why he only chose x brand and why white was the new in-style color -- seriously, white? What a d-bag. Anybody that goes cycling for style should really look in the mirror and see what they're wearing before they think the color, etc. makes any differece. I'm not knocking cycling at all as it's a great sport. Basically all the high-end bike shops have the same thing for the same price, so find a place with people that you like. Frankly I really like Jack and Adams but they're pretty small and not as convenient as the BSS locations. read more

I've brought my bike in for major and minor service and the consistency is refreshing compared to most other bicycle shops. My bicycle needs are really specific to triathlon and the mechanics are very capable of handling those niche needs. For those with Trek SC, you can be reassured your bike will be well cared for. Ron, Luke, Warren, Tristen, and the rest of the team will likely exceed your expectations if you've spent enough time at a bike shop. I came in for what I thought was going to be a bike repair charge to replace both tubes as my bike was given second hand, but after inspecting the current tubes, just needed a good airing up, and found I already had anti puncture lining on the wheels! The Bicycle Sport Shop is definitely the premiere Austin bike shop in my estimation, though you pay for that quality. But that's okay. Any premium bike store is expensive, and at least they have the optimum choices: Specialized, Trek, Gary Fischer; and tons to choose from. It's also the best selection around for kids bikes, certainly at their Research Boulevard location over their downtown spot, not surprising, considering the neighborhoods. They discount a little for multiple purchases or if you bundle in accessories, but no haggling. One sale a year, in April, and that's it. The sales staff is great, very knowledgeable and unobtrusive, ready to help you make an informed decision. So refreshing. Ask for Chris. read more

I'm an experienced road and mountain bike cyclist and I commute to work. I went in for a pre ride assessment for the MS150. The mechanic made an issue of my brakes which were fine. When I declined to have them fixed he yelled at me. That was embarrassing and unnecessary. For this I give the Research location a 1 star and the Parmer location 4 stars. read more

I have been a customer at Bicycle Sport Shop (Research) for a few years now. The customer service and guarantee of satisfaction is second to none. I went in for a new MTB at the beginning of this year and the Specialized that I bought just wasn't working for me. They were able to exchange it for one that better suited my needs. I recently discovered the Parmer location and the service I have received there is just as good as I had come to expect at the other store. I like the consistency of the experience at this business and look forward to shopping there for many years to come. I took my bike to bicycle sport shop for a basic tune up on thursday, and was informed that my bike would be ready by tuesday. 12 days later i recieved a call, "i just put your bike on the stand and you need new shifters. We can put some on, the cheapest is 239." Um no. My bike is fairly new, but does need a tune up. I picked my bike up and took it for a second opinion. I did not need new shifter. Say whaaaaaaaat? All i needed was a basic tune up. Thank you sport shop for trying to screw me. read more
