I started going to Tresses Salon many years ago because the person who had been cutting my hair switched salons. I followed her because she is terrific. Unfortunately, I recently called to make an appointment and was told she was on a three week vacation but another person was available to cut my hair. Long overdue for a haircut, I had the "substitute" cut my hair. Turns out the salon bamboozled me. My stylist was not on vacation. She longer worked there. Rather than letting me know that and perhaps offering to provide contact information, the salon concocted the vacation story to draw me in hoping the "substitute" would become my new permanent stylist. If you care about supporting a salon where people are honest and have integrity, this is not the place for you. read more

please, whatever you do, do not let daniel cut your hair. The receptionist had to stop in and step him from cutting my hair since he was doing such a poor job. I asked for a trim and he cut off 4 inches. another stylist had to fix it, and her and the receptionist were looking at how bad of a job he did. The other stylist and receptionist were lovely, and helped me not feel like i just had my hair ruined. but do not let daniel cut your hair. he starting cutting my hair dry without even combing or parting and when he washed my hair, he ripped one of my earring out of ear and conditioned my scalp. the hairbrush he brushed my hair with had other people's hair in it, and no barbacide for the tools. he would grab chunks of my hair and just cut. it was horribly. I'm sure the other stylists and salon itself are great. i just wish i would've seen something about daniel before choosing him, so i'm leaving this as a warning read more

This is hands down the best place I've had my hair cut in DC. I was tired of having barber shops do a terrible job, so I started going to Liz, and I won't get my hair cut anywhere else. Liz is a trained sculptor, and she always takes the time to make sure every strand of hair is shaped just right. This place is great for everyone, I couldn't recommend it high enough. read more

This place was recommended by a friend and I needed a trim. They were able to squeeze me in fairly quickly. I showed up to the appointment and had to wait for a bit (not uncommon I know). There is not a lot of room to sit while waiting and parking is a bit sketchy. After the stylist finished her customer and got herself some coffee, she sent me to get my hair washed. This was nice. The stylist (I can not recall her name) was pleasant. She did a nice job and did as I asked. Overall, it was a decent hair cut but nothing to write home about. read more

Dominique: Great, quick cut. I have a short bob with layers and she did an excellent job bringing it back up to snuff. Not to mention she was generally delightful to talk to. Side note: Weird interaction with the owner re: pricing. He was little brusque and aggressive and it was off-putting. Hence only 4 stars. Wouldn't stop me from going back- just go for the quality of the stylists, expect a great cut, and don't expect red carpet treatment. read more

I stopped in because I needed a haricut while I was in DC for a summer internship and was a bit worried because I've been going to the same place back home for almost 5 years but this was hands down the best haircut I've ever had. Dominique has a great understanding of how to tailor cuts to face shape etc... I got the student discount which comes without a wash but that's really clearly stated on the signs at the front of the store. Overall great experience and if I'm back in DC in need of a haircut I'll be stopping by again. read more

Ricardo is rude and pretentious. Will never cut my hair here again. My hair looks like a mop, has no real shape or design. They cut it much shorter than I wanted and swept away the hair on the floor to hide their faux-pas. Don't be fooled, this place is a waste of time and money. read more

Their website said that they had open spots for haircuts today, so I booked an appointment for 12pm. I'm standing outside of their locked salon that says "Open", but no lights are on and no one is inside. I took a $15 Uber ride just to get here for nothing, I've called their number multiple times, I'm pretty sure I've already paid for this appointment online, and I do not have the time or finances to be traveling around the city like this. I've had bad experiences with DC's salon scene for men's haircuts. From stylists who didn't understand what I wanted to sloppy haircuts to salons that still don't accept credit cards (come on, just get Square for god's sake), I began to dread the time every six weeks or so that I would have to go find a place that I hated least to spend a lot of money on a cut that I was usually not happy with. That was until I met Ricardo. I have found my DC salon. It's never too difficult to get an appointment, the location is great, and Ricardo does a fantastic job every time. I don't even have to tell him what to do, he just sort of sees what needs to be done. Additionally, I always feel like he's giving me 100% of his attention, which is more than I can say for a lot of the stylists I've used in the city before. read more

The first time I saw Dana I just pointed to my head and said "Help." I have very thick, plentiful, curly hair. Lucky for me, so does Dana! Anyone with curly hair knows that cutting, styling, and avoiding a frizzy fro is a huge challenge in a climate like D.C. I've been having her cut my hair for over a year now and have yet to be anything less than thrilled. Whether I know what I want or I only know what I don't want, she is always able to give my tons of curls a great, refreshing cut. Since our hair types are similar, she also gives great advice on at-home care based on her own experience. I highly recommend her to anyone, but especially to those looking for a good curly cut. As others have mentioned, the $28 haircuts for students on Mondays is a fantastic deal for anyone living on a grad student's budget. read more

Dominique changed everything for the better! She looked at my hair and asked what I want before even picking up the scissors. Her patience and honest opinion on what would look best on my face shape and limited styling capabilities led to a great cut. I have really long but fine hair and have been traumatized by other stylists who just chop. It is clear that both stylists (Ricardo and Dominique) have a lot of experience and are very capable at what they do. They're also quite friendly, and Dominique has a charming, dry French demeanor. The price is pretty great considering other salons nearby in downtown DC. HOWEVER-- both times I have been here, I have had a clear idea of the color that I wanted, along with pictures of myself and celebrities for clear inspiration, and BOTH times (by both stylists), my ideas were dismissed as "too much maintenance", and replaced with an underwhelming version that looked barely different from how my hair looked when I came in. After it happened the first time, I purposefully tried to be more direct in what I asked for, and showed her recent pictures of myself with lighter hair. She still asserted that it would look bad when it grew out, even when I told her that it had been 6 months since my last color, and my roots did not look bad at all. Only after Dominique finished highlighting my hair did she tell me that she didn't do many highlights on top.... which was the ENTIRE reason I wanted to get my hair done. Also because it was late, she didn't blowdry my hair, which meant that I didn't have the opportunity to see the color until the next day. Both times, my hair turned out looking nice, but neither time did they do what I asked them to do. This is a perfect salon for someone who is willing to let the experts decide what looks best on them, but NOT the place if you have a strict idea about what you want. May or may not come back again. read more

I've been going to Tresses Salon for 3 years already. Ricardo is an amazing hair stylist who not only cuts hair wonderfully but cares about his clients. He always asks what I have in mind, and is able to give great suggestions for styling. Unlike many others, he has a wonderful personality to go with his skill. I don't leave bad reviews ever but I just want to give a warning to those seeking a haircut! I needed to get my bangs trimmed so I popped into this salon. I like my bangs a little longer, below my brows, fringy, and whispy... I expressed this to the stylist but instead I got a straight cut, above my eyebrows, oddly uneven, and all my longer peices framing my face cut off. Not a huge deal because obviously it'll grow back fast but I do have an interview tomorrow-- just sucks. read more

I saw Dominique for the first time and she was excellent. She opened the store early for me on a Saturday morning, which means she truly cares about her clients. She asked me what I wanted and cut my hair according to my wishes while also advising me on what would look good. The salon isn't super glam and you won't get a fancy head massage during shampooing, but it's the cut that matters and she did a great job. They also take tip on card which is a plus for me. Overall the haircut is OK I guess, but the price online says $42 and up for hair below the neck. My hair is pretty long, about lower back length, but I see no reason why my cut should have cost me $60! Especially when their website says "Please note, a Shampoo & Blow Dry is an extra charge with every service except for haircuts." Except for haircuts! Which is exactly what I got. I really hope the extra $18 was worth them losing what might have been a loyal customer. Although I guess it is a good thing that I didn't skip the blow dry because after my hair naturally parted she had to make additional cuts. Otherwise my hair would have been awful! read more

I had a great experience with Dominique and then I made the mistake of getting an appointment with Ricardo. He is an atrocious haircutter, and extremely rude. He cut my hair much more than what I had wanted and when I questioned him he left my hair cut incomplete. I went here for the first time a few weeks ago. I was surprised to see the salon take up so little square footage. I've never been to a salon this small before - 2 or 3 cutting stations and 2 washing. But the space works and it felt a bit more personal, rather than the loud buzz of a huge salon. Not sure how my previous review just disappeared but its worth writing another one. I went here for a quick trim on my lunch break as a walk-in. They were able to squeeze me in which was great. However, the haircut was awful. I have long straight hair that is easy to cut. Initially the stylist asked to cut my hair dry. This should have been a red flag for me but I ignored it and requested the wash. After all, that was included in the price I was paying. The price that clearly stated "blow dry extra for all services except hair cut." After my cut and aggressive blow dry completed by two people at once, my hair was very uneven and the stylist needed to make additional cuts. When I was finished I went to the front to pay what the stylist told the receptionist was $60! When I asked why it was $60 instead of $40 she said because of the blow dry. First off, what respectable salon would allow you to leave their salon with a wet head? Second, a blow dry, even at a high end salon, doesn't cost $20. Third, the website SPECIFICALLY stated that the blow dry was included in a cut. When I told the manager he juat said "Sorry, that's the price." Not only did my hair look Plain Jane and aweful, I was over charged. I will never go back. Ever! Can't wait until my hair grows out! read more

I moved to DC in January of 2015 and have tried several reasonably priced salons that I was less than impressed with. One salon gave me highlights that actually turned my hair orange however thanks to Ricardo he spent many hours fixing my hair. I will continue to return to tresses for future cuts and color. read more

Went for a wash and a blow dry today.. let me say this ( I could've done a better job myself). The person rushed and could really do any style just a straight blow dry, because apparently who ever booked her schedule gave her an appointment 30 minutes after mine. Had the nerve to tell me, next time I have to specify (How am I supposed to know how long it would take her to do my hair) they should know that themselves. I asked her to at least use the straightner, she said she couldn't and didn't have time because her other appointment was there. She asked her colleague to do it but he said that he will charge me &25.00 extra to do so.. I refused to pay that and they still charged me full price, my hair wasn't even all the way dry!!!!! Will not go back and don't recommend for anyone else to go back either. read more
