Over many years I've had Trey Yuen food many times because of friends and co-workers of my other half had to eat Trey Yuen Chinese food. I grew up in a city with a China Town and my grandfather had a manufacturing business there. So... I know good from average and down from there. Trey Yuen out of kindness (because where it's located) is average. The Golden Wok near Walmart is far superior to me and the people that run it are top notch. WENT DOWNHILL We have been dining with Trey Yuen for over 20 years. We visited on Mother's Day and 3 out of our 4 orders were very disappointing. The sauce on two (2) separate orders of Mandarin Chicken had a foul taste. The sauce seemed burnt. The shrimp on an order of shrimp and broccoli were spoiled. an order of fried shrimp was fine. we mentioned it to the waitress. We told her we were concerned others may be served these same items. She didn't seem to care. Her response was "sorry, we are very busy". They indeed were very busy. However, this was no excuse for 3 out of 4 bad tasting dishes. read more

Not very impressed. The egg rolls were 100% freezer burnt. I just read another review before posting mine that also said their egg rolls were freezer burnt. It's super overpriced in my opinion. It cost $54 for two people to eat. You only get 2 egg rolls with the appetizer and they cost a whole $6......!!!! $17 just for a plate of Chinese chicken.... I've been to Trey Yuen twice. Once when I moved here a few years ago and recently for a work lunch. It's nice enough. First, can we talk about the decor? It's over the top. Like the interior designer was inspired by PF Chang's in the early 90s and decided to crank it up a few notches and make it full on Chinese-bougie-kitsch. The pond, stone work, and decor are all lovely; you can tell that someone put some thought into it. But, it's real extra. I loved the menu, with the signature sauces from Szechuan and Cantonese influences mixed with local Louisiana seafood offerings of alligator and crawfish. Like the decor, a lot of thought went into this menu. The execution of the dishes is where I'm going to ding them. I ordered the Szechuan beef with fried rice for lunch. The base flavors of the sauce were there, but it was too salty. The fried rice tasted previously frozen. Now, I get that fried rice is best made with leftover white rice from the night before or frozen rice to reduce the moisture content so the grains don't stick together when fried. But if you use the freezer method, you can't over-freeze the rice, which is what happened here. I also had the hot and sour soup. This was well done, with real bamboo shoots and a good amount of heat. It had just the right amount of vinegar so it wasn't overly sour. This restaurant is as good as it gets. I grew up going to Trey Yuen my whole life. My grandmother even lived on the same block as Tommy, the owner, when she and my grandfather were raising my dad, so I've always had a personal and sentimental connection with this place. As I've gotten older, and my life is completely on the south shore, I don't get over to the north shore often anymore, much less go to Trey Yuen like I used to, but today, that changed. I came to meet a friend to catch up and we had planned on meeting my mother and sister here for a small dinner and some time to get together over a simple, yet well done meal. Arriving here, it takes me back to my childhood when I would come and feel like I've stepped back into ancient China. The outside still amazes me just like it used to when I was a kid. The hostesses still wear the traditional Chinese Dress that they did when I was young and that giant fish tank is still in the lobby by the wooden statue of Buddha. My friend and I went and met my sister and mom who were already seated and awaiting our arrival. We were promptly greeted by our waitress and were asked if we would like anything to drink. We then decided we were going to order their famous Trey Yuen Platter, which was something we always ordered when we would dine here as I was growing up because it's a good sample of some of their famed appetizers; not to mention, it has fire in the middle! We each also ordered the outstanding Wor Wonton Soup. Tommy's wife actually taught my grandmother the recipe for this soup and how to make it when they lived in the neighborhood together, so it is definitely a classic. Tonight wasn't an extravagant evening, and it was just another Tuesday night on the north shore, but Trey Yuen has and continues to live up to its reputation of excellence that it has maintained for many, many years. The service was excellent, the quality of the food was on point, and the ambiance was as charming as ever. I'm sad it has taken me this long to give this establishment the 5-star review that it is so deserving of, but I'm glad that tonight, I got that opportunity. I will most definitely be back here as often as I can and highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to make a trip to the north shore to experience some of the highest quality, best Chinese food around. The waitress was very slow & appeared to be very uninterested in her job. The egg rolls contained an unusual spice & they were room temperature & soggy. The crab rangoon was also room temperature & soggy. The sauce on the lemon chicken had a terrible odor & tasted foul, it was left uneaten. The white rice was hard & dry. The Tong Cho crawfish, had 2 visible crawfish tails & it too had a foul taste. Trey Yuen is the best Chinese cuisine in the metro area. Although it is only a block from the Causeway, Trey Yuen makes you feel if you're miles from anywhere. The exterior has several koi ponds, statues and stone bridges. Inside the decor is very upscale. Carved wood, large windows and fancy tables all add to Tye atmosphere. The food is excellent. While many of the items have the same name as those in a run of the mill Chinese restaurant, here they are much improved. On my most recent trip I started with pot stickers and hot and sour soup. The soup was very flavorful and packed with stuff. The pot stickers are among the best I've had. For an entree I had the hot pepper chicken (may not be the actual name). While I would have liked it spicier, it was very good. Because this is a high end Chinese restaurant, expect to pay more than you're used to at the local buffet. The food is well worth it. If you like Chinese food, you need to try Trey Yuen. It is worth the drive. read more

I came down to Louisiana from LA and I have to say that Trey Yuen is nothing like any Chinese restaurant that I've ever been to. I had come to try this place out with the recommendation from a Louisianian and I'm so glad that I did. In terms of setting, the restaurant is pretty impressive. Once you park your car, you find yourself walking into "Chinese history". You pass a miniature waterfall and a few koi ponds (with huge-o koi) before you enter the restaurant's lion guarded doorway. The restaurant's interior was even most impressive. There are a few Asian art museums in soCal that haven't impressed me as much as this restaurant had. As for food, I was able to try a little bit of everything because I had gone with almost a dozen people for dinner. Not only did the restaurant have the common Chinese dishes, but I probably enjoyed their take of Chinese-Cajun fusion dishes the most. It was really refreshing to have tried something that felt like a specialty to the south rather than just Chinese food during my visit. Shrimp and crawfish on a cloud and their etouffee are my recommendations. And the portions were really good for the price. I am a life-long fan of Trey Yuen. I will always consider them one of my favorite restaurants of all time. With all of that said, it doesn't mean that at some points in time, they wane. We order at least once every 2 months. Through the pandemic, we ordered more than ever. I will say that we had a lot of dissatisfied orders. I know that most of the brothers are retiring and I'm sure they are all there less and less. Maybe that is the answer. Not sure. But for instance, I ordered Shrimp and Crabmeat in a cloud, which is not a usual order for me, but since we were ordering so often, I decided to branch out. The seafood was literally bad. Upon opening the lid to the takeout container, the stench of the seafood was smelled by all of the guests in my kitchen. I called the restaurant and they did offer a gift certificate to replace the dinner. As for other entrees, the Szechuan Beef has not been completely up to par in taste in a while. This is my all time favorite meal. It's just been different. A lot less flavorful. The Flaming Chicken tasted like it had a very unusual spice in it, like Cumin. Cumin does not go in Chinese. Maybe it wasn't Cumin, but some spice that did not belong in that dish was present and it tasted like Cumin. Completely altered the taste. The Wor Wonton soup has always had crisp greens and one big shrimp floating in it. The greens were soft and it was as if I got soup that had cooked down all day, not fresh tasting at all. The shrimp is now TINY and was from the same stock obviously that the rotten seafood of the Shrimp and Crabmeat in a cloud came from. And on top of everything else, they did not give us enough white rice to match the meals. That has never happened. This standard is just not what I've come to expect through the years from Trey Yuen. And on top of it all, instead of seeing an improvement through all of our orders in the past 3 months, they've announced menu price increases due to the stress of the Pandemic. That's kind of a letdown coupled with them putting out less than stellar food. I'm not pleased with my favorite restaurant as of late. I hope this is not a permanent standard they have found themselves in. It's happened through the years here and there, and they seem to have always been temporary slumps and they eventually rebound. I can only hope that is the case now. They have too many components still in place to remain the GOLD STANDARD of Chinese food on the Northshore. Please get back to what made you great! read more

I purchased (To-Go) Boneless Fried chicken, combination fried rice, (2) orders of egg rolls and crab Rangoons, total $63.00, paid $70. The staff was punctual, came out to the car immediately, collected $$, and promptly brought food. ABSOLUTELY the WORST attempt at Boneless fried chicken, looked like cut up chicken nuggets and the vegetables had such a burnt tasting brown gravy that they were not edible. The crab itself was great 4-5/5, but the veggies were a little old, overcooked, and had too much soy sauce 2/5. I also ordered a #15, the Crawfish in lobster sauce was amazing! I've had great service and I've had mediocre service, great entrees as well as disappointing, but one thing is for sure: they have the crab rangoon game on lock. They are highly recommended so do yourself a solid and order them! I do really like Trey Yuen despite their hiccups. We went for dinner yesterday and had another mixed experience. The service was great and our server was personable and very sweet. She offered to box the rest of our crab rangoon before the entrees came and even packed us plum sauce to go with it. I love when a server helps you maximize table space. My Egg Flower soup was awful. I won't sugarcoat it.. it was very a odd texture and had an off-putting smell and taste in the thick white base. The egg looked fine except for a few very dark pieces (brown brown, not yellow) swirled in that would have turned me off if the soup base hadn't already. I was delivered the wrong tofu entree by a runner and reported it to the server. She got her manager who confirmed I got Braised Tofu (which was incredibly bland btw) instead of my Kung Po. She took it away and the owner came out to apologize. It was all handled so well and so classily. I really appreciated how the Trey Yuen team went about resolving the issue; the correct dish, which by the way was delicious, was quickly prepared and sent to the table piping hot. Both the manager and the owner came by afterward to make sure it was right. The only specific complaint I have about this place is their rice sucks. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants ever. The atmosphere is beautiful. It's very authentic chinese architecture. It's quiet and calming. Some of my favorite dishes are the mandarin chicken, tong cho chicken, and the house fried rice. Flaming chicken is also really cool as they light it on fire at your table. Near 50 years in business - they gonna do it right. A fusion palette, service, and ambiance; this place is what happens when people take pride in what they do and do it well You step in from the parking lot into an oasis of a garden complete with statues, green, water features, and koi. All so tasteful and family picture worthy. The inside is like being in an old king-fu movie complete with carved wood and paper screen walls, large artworks; the bar is dark and luxe - like a fancy opium den less all the illegal stuff I was here for lunch ordered the Tong Cho Crawfish; Lobster sauce crawfish; dbl happiness and fried rice; all for $20. The place was bustling. Veggies were crisp; flavours were delicious; Sichuan-Cajun!!! portions were generous. Food came out quick and hot Overall, a happy place that's worth the drive to the Northshore. This would be a great place for a first date or any celebration.
