Well you wouldn't expect The Red Apple to be a Chinese restaurant. At least I wouldn't. This is another one of the order at the counter, and then sit down restaurants. This area is in LOVE with this type of restaurant. It's similar to the China Kitchen. Same menu. I had the honey chicken which was delicious. I like that they put pineapple chunks in with it. It came with rice (LOVED that there were no peas or carrots in it) and an egg roll. All super good. It's a small restaurant. There are only 4 or 5 tables, but they are nice tables and chairs. Not the usual junky furniture you find at most mainly take out restaurants like this. The place is really clean and the whole front of the store is windows so it's nice and bright. We live in Ponchatoula and there is not a really good or trusted Chinese restaurant in Ponchatoula or Hammond. I and the wife used to eat here when we lived in Mandeville back in 2010. Was looking for Chinese take out and heard good things about Red Apple. Food wasn't bad but the prices on their Online menu LOOKED great. Being our first time here and the prices on the menu were cheap we ordered a bunch of different appetizers and entrees. My family went to pick it up and it was $59 when it should have been $45. We then called them to make the aware of the mistake and they didn't apologize but said "THEIR ONLINE MENU PRICES WERE NOT RIGHT" and no itemized receipt was provided. It's been about a year and tonight I decided to try Red Apple again because it's close by, and I still have not found great Chinese food anywhere in the greater New Orleans/ Northshore area. Oh how I miss Scallion Pancakes!! Anyway, tonight I tried something different from here and it was really good. I chose a menu item from their 'healthy Diet Menu', which was Steamed Shrimp with Green Jade (Broccoli, Zucchini, and Snow Peas) $10.50. Unfortunately they were out of Snow Peas, but I asked if they could substitute with Eggplant and they were happy to. A Brown sauce comes on the side, so you can decide how much to add to the food. I also ordered a large Hot & Sour Soup $3.95. The Steamed Shrimp dish was so delicious, fresh, healthy and filling that I am certain that I will be adding this as a regular rotation to my take out food options. The brown sauce that came with the dish is made without Oil or MSG. It was fairly thick and had a bit of a ginger/soy flavor to it. it was good, and I loved having the control as to how much to add. The shrimp were large, there were 12 of them, and they were fresh, tender, flavorful and succulent. I was stuffed with about 1/2 the meal, and get to have lunch with the rest tomorrow. I really enjoyed this meal and how great my body felt after finishing. None of the usual Chinese food regret I usually have (ugh, I feel awful and bloated, why did I order Chinese, lol), or the itchy nose I normally get from the MSG. On to the Hot & Sour Soup. This soup I was not such a fan of. It had a little heat to it and a good amount of mushrooms and tofu and bamboo shoots, but it also had pieces of chicken in it, which I didn't like. I prefer my Hot and Sour soup to be vegetarian, and most of the time it is, so I was surprised to taste the chicken. I think next time I'll skip the soup and go for the Steamed Shrimp and the Veggie Dumplings. I also appreciate that they are open until 9:30 M-T, and I believe 10 PM the rest of the week. I tend to eat late, so the later hours really suit my schedule. I'm happy to be able to update my review from a 2 1/2 star to a 4 star! Good going Red Apple! read more

Ordered a quart of Hunan shrimp along with several other items. When I got home I found a small bowl of broccoli and shrimp, the amount in the bowl was less than a pint, in fact the food fit into the smallest rice container they serve. When I called they were not apologetic, and of course they didn't make the error. If it wasn't for the fact that I had to drive 30 minutes to go back, I would have bought the food back. The food here is my favorite Chinese food on the north shore...however it comes at a cost, and I don't mean money. They take FOREVER. I've been here many times and will continue to come. But I highly recommend that if you are in a hurry, do not order from here. About 50% of the time, the girl who takes orders and answers the phone has a bad attitude and is completely overwhelmed. I typically have small orders, sometimes only 2-3 items, and it takes 30 minutes minimum! I waited half an hour for 2 orders of crab wontons when I was told it would be 10 minutes. Also, calling ahead is totally pointless because every time I've called ahead and given them a name/order, it's like they've never taken the order or have any recollection of the phone call to begin with. Again, the food is worth it but call ahead and give them plenty of time! And don't expect a smile from the staff. read more

Very low quality Chinese food. I had a hard time finding the chicken in the breading in my Gen. Tsao's chicken, the dumplings were underwhelming, and the sweet and sour chicken reminded me of a mall food court. The egg rolls and fried rice were o.k... but not good. Compare to other Chinese restaurants ,this may be the Best Chinese food in town . Food is always fresh with lots of authentic flavors , taste is Very similar to New York style Chinese food .
