Lunch or dinner the experience and food has always been pleasant. My favs are the Mandarin Duck or Chicken (sauce on the side), or Crisp Roast Duck. Egg Rolls, Pot Stickers, Roast Pork are our some of our favorite appetizers. Their house condiments of Sweet and Sour sauce and Chinese Hot Mustard are a must with Egg Rolls, Roast Pork, Fantail or Hawaiian Shrimp. Other favorites are the spicy Kung Bo anything, Honey Pork,Vietnamese Crispy Chicken with Jasmine Rice and Moo Shu Pork. My Grandson loves the YetCaMein soup and Shrimp with Vegetables. Pork Fried Rice or the Combination Fried Rice are on our table whenever dining in. The food here speaks for itself. From the moment we walked into North Empress, the experience was top-tier. They seated us right away and immediately made us feel welcome. Our waitress was fantastic--she offered us water, gave us thoughtful recommendations, and really seemed to care about making sure we enjoyed our meal. The food I ordered ended up being amazing--fresh, flavorful, and honestly one of the best dishes I've had in a while. But what really set this visit apart was the owner. Not only did he come out to greet us, but when we accidentally spilled a drink (embarrassingly), he made a light-hearted joke, turned the moment into a laugh, and insisted on cleaning it up himself even though we tried to take care of it. To top it all off, he offered us 10% off the next time we come in. I even joked that I'd buy him lunch for all the trouble, and he just laughed and said, "No--lunch will be on us next time!" It's been quite a while since I've been in here, but my friends all tell me I gotta come back...and the one I had dinner with tonight insisted on it! My buddy and his wife asked me out to dine - I had my heart set on some pho, but when I got here, I had a hankering for vermicelli. I like mine with egg roll AND grilled pork - if you haven't done it, do it - for real. The presentation was different from what I was used to - a flatter, wider bowl, the pork thin sliced, almost julienned, but everything was fresh - crunchy where it was supposed to be, hot and charred/fried when needed, and it really hit the spot. Fish sauce and a generous serving of sriracha, and I was home. Steve's wife got the dumplings, and he had a giant plate of something or other with soup, but he also polished off some of Alicia's food while we were there. I remember this dude from college - I was the fat kid, but I sure couldn't hang with this dude's stomach! Our server was so super awesome and cute, but I forgot to get her name. She couldn't say Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio, but neither could I, so there. Very attentive, got our food out hot and delicious, and was a wonderful host. If you're hankering for some Vietnamese or Chinese food, but can't decide - here's your sign! Food is great wait staff is great. I have to ask you to do yourself a favor though, when you order a protein and veggie dish ask for the dish with more garlic and spicy and it makes it ten tines better. If you can't take the spice tell them you would like the sauce richer note flavorful. Everytime I go with the Brien garlic sauce with spicy added I clean my plate fully. I had to do a lot of searches on Yelp before finally choosing this establishment. Granted I was searching both sides of Lake Pontchartrain because all of the old places I used to know didn't come back after Katrina. I was looking for specific dish, namely Mandarin Chicken. You local folks may not realize this but Mandarin Chicken is exclusive to the New Orleans area. I have lived in a lot of states, including some with high Asian populations, and I have never been able to find this dish anywhere except here in Southern Louisiana. I found a photo of it on Northshore Empress's Yelp listing and identified it as what I was seeking. Both the outside and inside of the building looked new and upscale. Inside the dining room is furnished very nicely. I ordered the Mandarin Chicken and was glad I did. It was exactly as I remembered it from 30 years ago when I lived here for two plus decades. Exquisitely fried white meat chicken in a brown gravy served over a bed of lettuce with a crushed peanut topping. It was my first Chinese food meal back in the day and got me hooked on Chinese food forever. Today's meal fulfilled my memories and taste buds to the maximum. I almost couldn't stop eating the huge oversized portion. I'll probably eat my leftovers for dinner tonight. Thank You Northshore Empress for satisfying one of my life long cravings. Quite possibly the worst chicken and broccoli and fried rice I've ever had. I figured that noone messes up those 2 but I figured wrong. $40.00 later has my dogs getting chicken and broccoli and fried rice and I'll be going to find something edible after this appointment. Oh.... the egg rolls weren't anything to brag about either but they were the most edible thing on the table. I would definitely advise against this place. This was my first visit to Northshore Empress. Overall, I would give a 3.5 but the combination rice, hot and sour soup, and amazing service brought it up to 4 stars. Everything tastes the same. The sauce options are mostly brown or white sauce options. It is tastes watered down. There is no Oyster sauce or Szechuan type sauces for example. Very well priced and almost always packed, Northshore Empress is a good pick. I hadn't been in a hot minute so I figured I would do it for Yelp. There is a (limited) Vietnamese menu as well as the Chinese offered. Every Chinese dish comes as a "meal" with shrimp fried rice and fried wontons so it's not simple to put the food in the middle and share as we're accustomed to doing. Our server brought out plates with our food though! As usual the main dish was delicious.. and as usual the fried rice was a bland filler. We got the Mandarin Chicken (thinly sliced pieces of white meat that I found chewy, wish the option for dark was a thing) and Kung Bo Beef. Hands down the best Chinese restaurant, not just on the Northshore, but in the entire area. If you dont believe me just pass by one day for dinner and I guarantee every spot in the parking lot will be filled. My wife and I eat from here quite a bit and there is nothing that we have not liked. The owner, Tommy I believe his name is, who I assume is the owner, is always welcoming whether a first time guest or a regular. I can go on forever about how good the food is but don't take my word for it. Just go try it. You will not be disappointed. In the picture is the Empress Chicken with fried rice and wontons.
