We viewed an apartment in SIlver Lake that was definitely nothing like the description advertised on their Craigslist ads or their website.. it was pretty dumpy to put it nicely. Zaya, the woman showing the unit, was rude to me over texts, telling me I had to be on time to her open showing or I wouldn't stand a chance to get the place. I didn't make the appointment time though.. she did, and I already had a prior viewing set up. Later she sent me emoji texts, maybe as an apology? It made me wonder how old the people are who work here. We got to the showing in Silver Lake about 5 minutes after it started. When we saw the place it was not in very good condition and there were tons of other potential renters scrambling around. It was difficult to ask any questions due to so many people. The apartment didn't rent for another week or two so it wasn't as urgent as Zaya's angry texts made it seem to see the place exactly on time. We found a much nicer & cleaner apartment (in the exact same price range) and I feel relieved. The Rental Girl seemed unprofessional and as a potential renter that is always a red flag. Update: Yuck, I heard the Rental Girl talking about how they choose renters from a large group of potential people on some LA radio show broadcasting on NPR.. RG wants pictures of you, your pets, etc. so they can judge if you are attractive enough for the unit? They were basically looking for the renters who kissed their ass the most, like some sad contest. Maybe they were kidding (didn't seem like it).. but either way I would NEVER rent from these people. read more

We recently worked with Alexis to potentially find a new home. In general, Alexis was great--personable and friendly. We were very hopeful that we'd found somewhere special, but the unit we were interested in ended up being rented out to someone else. Someone who made more money and with better credit qualified higher than us--understandable. The primary issue we have with the company is the process (and lack of communicating said process) they use to rent spaces out. We were absolutely not aware that we would be placed in "competition" with other applicants. We're used to working with management companies/rentals that stop taking applications once someone is interested. Not here! The Rental Girl holds multiple open houses (in the case of the property we were interested in, for 3+ weeks), and accepts applications throughout the whole period even though there are numerous people who have already applied. Smart--they must make a pretty penny by taking everyone and their mom's application fees. Sure, we definitely could have asked about their process, and it probably would've been our due diligence to do so (now we know). BUT, I feel like it's The Rental Girl's DUTY to inform people of this. Transparency first. -1 star for TRG. As stated earlier, Alexis in general was great. But she's docked a star, because it took her a whole week to get back to us regarding our applications, even after we'd expressed a "rush/urgency" on our end. Unfortunately, we placed all our eggs in her basket. We held off on applying to other properties, because what's the point in wasting money on those fees if you've already applied elsewhere (that you think you're going to end up living at)? Because we ended up not getting the property we wanted (due to not being informed of the complete rental process), we're now stuck rushing to find another place to live in 2 days. TL;DR -- The Rental Girl should make sure to inform people that their services are similar to that of the Wild Wild West. You're going to end up in a shootout between the top applicants of the property you're interested in. Waaay too much pressure and anxiety for trying to rent out a 1 bedroom apartment for less than 2k. Also, you can expect your application to take up to 1 week to be processed with Alexis. read more

This review is specifically to Jen the leasing agent responsible for the Pasadena area. I waited almost a whole year to write this, despite the time that has passed. I still vividly remember this as the most unpleasant experience with a leasing agent from my 6 years of renting apartments in Southern California. I was ending a lease early, and Jen was responsible for helping me find a tenant. It took weeks for an ad to be put up, and about three months before we found someone to rent. During this time Jen had just left the rental girl company, and started her own business. I knew this because she told me her self, which was pretty much telling me that I wasn't her priority as she is busy with her own interest. Jen certainly knows how to be a leasing agent, but she could learn how to be more professional and friendly. Especially when people are renting in a nice area, paying good money, they deserve better customer service. The apartment itself is nice, parking permit can be obtain through city hall. Love the city, the apartment, didn't like the management. read more

When I first moved to LA, I would browse The Rental Girl's listings every so often and dream of when I could afford to live in great spaces without several room/housemates. That being said, it meant a lot to me when I actually worked with Fallon and her team this year. Overall we had a successful lease signing through TRG. Communications were professional, rent is very reasonable and apartment appears as advertised. Virtual tour accommodation was very smooth. The application process through TRG is arduous for applicants. I can see why landlords would be fine with it, but asking for references from where I worked and lived 5 years ago, and then calling all those places is a bit much. Additionally, there are separate application fees for applicant and guarantor (if one is required). On the guarantor application, it asks who the guarantor is guaranteeing for, yet when we received the lease we were surprised that the guarantor was listed as guarantor for the entire unit, not just for the applicant the guarantor had applied with. Did not appreciate that in the process of asking this to be fixed in the lease, we were made to feel like they "could ask the owners and make an exception but this is standard, just so we know", when in fact the application process is misleading and contradictory. Our agent, Fallon was courteous, kind, and respectful. We wish the process had be facilitated sooner (almost 2 weeks from app submission to lease signing, some multiple day gaps in email correspondence) but admittedly this could have been on the owners as well. A couple minor bumps - asking for wire transfer receipts when banks do not generate receipts of wire transfers, and failing to accurately amend the lease with requested revisions until we sent specific language that addressed the issues - provide some room for improvement. In the end, we got everything we wanted, just a rockier process than most rental applications and leases. read more

The Rental Girl (TRG) has solid listings. Albeit most are steep in price, there are some real gems with great value out there. TRG an infinitely better approach to renting than the mega-modern-cash-cow lofts going up (seemingly) everywhere. Joaquin was the best! She was very unhelpful and mis leading and after i come there with my mom and fill out the application on line and paid 80 dollars for our application .. My mom has 800 plus credit score ..They give away the room we applied for and denied us the application for no apparent reason... I could not get ahold of her and she never returned my phone calls ...she wasted two weeks of my time .. As a landlord, this was my first time using The Rental Girl, and I will NEVER use it again or recommend it to any of my colleagues. I dealt with 2 agents from TRG for 1 rental assignment: The first agent Alexis just didn't know what she was doing. She lied about her "expertise" in the neighborhood, bait-and-switched with a higher rental price than what I initially estimated, and never got a single application to me in 2 months of listing even after lowering the price down below market price (in fact, I later found out she didn't forward me an application that was submitted). She was eventually let go by TRG themselves (not surprised). The second agent Lindsay took over. On the positive, she was timely in responses and filled it at a more appropriate price within a few weeks; it was still lower than what it could've been, but the vacancy duration up to this point was too long. However, she lacks too much patience and attention to detail; she had to constantly be reminded of inquiries/questions multiple times before she would address them. Worst thing was that she was highly retaliative whenever she was asked to follow up on inquiries and thought her "6 years of experience" justified not carrying out simple necessary tasks. I personally had to review the background check. I was able to verify things she said was not possible via simple phone calls. I then reviewed the entire lease because I knew I couldn't trust TRG for integrity at this point, and thank goodness I did; the lease clearly needed proofreading (even had misspellings), and she refused to make any modifications herself for "legal implications"--even grammatical errors--something I had to do on my own AGAIN (they don't seem to know Microsoft Word in 2020). And nevermind that she didn't even go over my notes until I called her and read through it, and was surprised about how much revision the lease needed. Nevermind how bad this broker's lawyer is--to not even read through my revisions is pure lack of effort. The amount of work I had to do on her behalf was simply ridiculous. It doesn't matter if someone has 30 years of "experience," laziness and attention to detail isn't something "experience" will gloss over in real estate. She was clearly blinded and in a rush for her commission without the landlord's interests in mind; this quality of service is barely worth half-month rent, not to mention 1-month. I was going to assign another upcoming rental if the experience was good, but I am baffled at how bad TRG is (their CRM and other systems they are using aren't that impressive either). REPUTATION and TRUST are key in real estate business more-so than upfront profit, and TRG definitely doesn't understand that principle. TRG is an embarrassment to the leasing industry, and another reason why real estate agents get a bad rep from the general public. This was my first and last transaction with TRG. If you are a seasoned realtor, stay far away. read more

My wife (girlfriend at the time) turned to the Rental Girl when moving from NYC to LA after looking for some time for an apartment that suited our needs. The LA rental market is much different than NYC's and even though we were already paying more than what we were projected to pay here it was incredibly tough to find a place that we liked and were actually rejected by a few places because we were self-employed at the time. There are really two reviews here: One is for Alexis, who really was our savior during this process. She helped us understand the market, walked us through the process, and found us something that really suited our needs even though it required some extra digging on her part. We ended up being her neighbor actually and it's been blissful ever since! So 5 stars for her. The other review however is for the Rental Girl as an agency/model. If you're a landlord I can imagine it's great to have an agency that thoroughly vets prospective tenants but we found it to be incredibly invasive. The rental girl application format was longer than completing my college entrance application! All to see overpriced listings that were for the most part not as advertised. Many were advertised as apartments but were actually ADU's, Highland Park listings that were craftsman fixers on dirt lots advertised as "bright", "sunny" and "spacious". Before linking with Alexis, we were actually going to turn to another agency to help us. She really saved the day and it speaks to the power of people that care that are willing to go above and beyond to help you. The Rental Girl really did have some great people working for them, but there's recently been a mass exodus of most of the best agents. I'm leaving this review now as a public service. Choosing a place to live is one of the most important and stressful decisions you have to make, and our overall experience with this agency was not pleasant. We felt like we were being fed into a tenant mill in which we should feel honored to find a place. That was until we found Alexis, who really listened to us and treated us like people, not numbers. This review of the general Rental Girl service for leasing our unit, but specifically for Michelle who was our agent. I reached out to Michelle to help rent our duplex unit in Glendale and from our first conversation she was friendly, accessible and knowledgeable. She met with us for a walkthrough of the property and a few days later we signed on to have her represent it. We were able to provide some guidelines for the listing and make a few custom points in the lease. She helped suggest a price for the unit based on comps in the neighborhood and handled EVERYTHING from scheduling a badass photographer, to coordinating all the showings, to managing the agreement with our prospective tenants, to the deposit and signing. She kept up great communication throughout the process and was always responsive to any questions we had. Once the lease was signed, all we had to do was cut TRG a check which we were happy to do for the white-glove service we received.
