Adam explained that french doors are expensive and heavy, so he would need two guys to do the install. He quoted a week out. It took two weeks for the doors to arrive. I'm sure this was out of his control. Another week for him to come and install them. He said he was working on other jobs and then hurt his knee. Understandable. When he came to install the doors he showed up alone. He said his guys were tied up on another job so he might not finish that day. I thought I was paying for two guys? Anyways, he did get the doors installed that day by himself. He was very nice. I work at home, so I had to be there all day. He did a good job installing them. At the end of the day he explained to me that the door manufacturer had done a terrible job priming the doors, so I would have to sand them before I did a final paint job. Wait, I have to paint the doors for you? I thought I was paying for a complete job... I spent the entire next day getting paint matched and meticulously painting the doors, casing, trim, and surrounding drywall myself. Lucky I know how to do that I guess. Like I said it was a mixed experience. Adam was pleasant to communicate with. He was pretty good at communicating the day before and the day of by text and email. The price he quoted me was the price I was billed. So there were a couple of positives. I just don't plan on getting any more work done by this company.

The people we worked with really tried to understand what we wanted and made sure that we understood the tradeoffs we were making to get there. People who see the new kitchen have often commented about how well it fits with the rest of the house. We couldn't be happier with how it turned out. TDS has a reputation as one of the best old-home remodeling companies around. After living in and heavily using the new kitchen for over 6 months, we can affirm that the reputation is well earned. Some would say that, along with this, TDS is high priced. All the research we did leading into this job indicated that, if we wanted a remodeling firm that was going to do justice to our nice old home, pay their people well, and stand behind their work, we were going to be in the price range that TDS came in at. In the end the contract and pricing was very transparent and reasonable. The other review here, regarding inflexibility of contract language, is really missing the point of reviewing this company.

We had a really frustrating experience with Edge. They came in just below budget with their…read moreestimate and then when quotes came in 50% higher than they anticipated, they refused to give us a breakdown of what was costing what so we were not able to make an informed decision regarding what to eliminate from the scope of our project. We had significant communication issues with the designer, who did not seem to understand our vision and did not have any ideas or input beyond the inspiration photos we gave her. She was also slow in responding to all e-mails (average of one week between us contacting her and getting a response) and extremely slow with updates and scheduling walkthroughs, consults, etc. We ended up taking over some of these tasks and scheduling appointments ourselves. We chose Edge as we did not want to serve as our own contractor, but we ended up needing to prod the designer to get things done and/or do them ourselves. Edge did not catch that our original masonry fireplace would be complicated to update. The designer spend much of her time fine-tuning the design on the fireplace, surround, etc. Unfortunately, after we had spend a lot of time making decisions on the fireplace, she finally had the mason look at the photos and was told that removing the existing fireplace surround would be prohibitively expensive and/or impossible. Edge never consulted an architect or engineer on our project despite the fact that the primary change was to be the elimination of a load-bearing wall. As such, we did not receive a usable floorplan. The mock-up we received did not contain any measurements or other specifics we would need to take a plan to another builder to enact. We decided to end our relationship with Edge after three months of working with them and receiving no deliverables or timeline regarding when construction could begin. We asked for a refund on our $1500 design fee due to receiving no design deliverables and were told that Edge felt that fulfilled their side of the design agreement and would thus issue not refund. Would not recommend this company.

Far too many contractors gave us a ballpark figure without wanting to put anything into writing--Scott Brothers was willing to give us an itemized estimate with specific allowances for fixtures. So, if we chose something that was more expensive than that, we knew upfront that we'd be paying more. Brian, Tim, Nick, & Dan made fast work of finishing a stubbed in bathroom in our basement--from start to finish, it was just over three weeks. All the workers who came to our home were friendly, personable, and professional--they cleaned up every day, were very kind to our pets, and communicated with us frequently. They were also very mindful of our pets and were careful not to let any of our inquisitive pets run outside--Tim and Brian made such fast friends with our dog that she was always excited to see them when they arrived. Super special shout out to Tara, who worked with us patiently as we went back and forth on our selections, asked to add and subtract components, and was overall very fast in responding to our inquiries. And when we did encounter the expected challenges with supply chain issues, a product that was damaged, or some other question, their entire team went above and beyond to help solve it in a timely manner. We are thrilled with the final product and so happy to finally have a bathroom in the main entertainment area of our home. We will absolutely use Scott Brothers for any future home remodeling needs and would recommend them to anyone looking for high quality craftsmanship and professionalism.
