Trials is amazing! I've been here a few times now and I love it more every time. They have everything you need to be an awesome bar. They have games, seating, DARTS, and even a fireplace! The bartenders, amazing. They are so sweet and kind. Not pretentious like at some dive bars. The place usually had a crowd but isn't so crowded that you can't find a seat or a spot to hang out in. The drinks are made strong and cheap! I have never eaten here, only come for drinks so unfortunately I can't comment on that. read more

Super grungy English dive bar. Dim lights, wallpaper, bookshelves, and maps on the walls. Awesome selection of beer on tap. They have your classic greasy bar food: burgers and deep fried finger foods, but people seem to come for their fish & chips, pot pie, and mudd pie. No TVs so it's a bit more intimate, but it does get pretty loud in here especially on Monday night trivia. Trivia: Every Monday 8pm, come early to get seats. Only up to 3 people per team, 20 questions in 20 minutes. Very difficult, I think. But super fun and the host Matt is always sarcastically entertaining. read more

Being from NYC... I know what a good Irish Pub is and this is it. Lost of beer, great Irish food and good times in a comfy dive-like joint (aka... a pub!). This would be a great place to come on St. Patrick's Day (or anytime) because they can serve a real Black and Tan (Guinness and Bass). The food! The food! Their burgers are some of the best that I've ever had. The meat quality was high, the burger patty was thick and the marriage between the beef, bacon and the type of cheese that they use, was out of this world. I had onion rings with mine which were pretty good too. My husband had the curry fries and said that they were outrageous but to watch out because even though the fries cool down, the sauce does not. The inside of this pub is really charming. High ceilings, eclectic decorations, and varying styles of pub tables. We chose to sit in the back section where it was a little more mellow. The front is a little louder and bustling but that can be fun too if you want to be in the middle of everything. This is a great place to meet friends or hang out in a casual environment. An awesome pub. There is always a good mix of people. No TVs make this place a good spot to get away from a typical sports bar and it's dark lighting make the setting intimate. The food is great. I've had just about everything on the menu and there isn't a bad thing though their curry and fish and chips are the best items. They have good UK beers as well as rotating raps. ATMOSPHERE: I've spent a lot of time in real Dublin (Ireland, not California) pubs and have not been able to find anything comparable ... until now. Trials isn't 100% Euro-authentic, but I'd give it a 75% grade. Low-key, dark wood, not too grubby, informal atmosphere/servers - and only $5 for a 20oz glass? NICE! This place is tiny and always packed. I came here a couple times before to drink with friends and always had a good time. The atmosphere is cozy and wonderful. Although I'm not much of a beer person, I think they do have a good selection of them. This time, I tried the Boddingtons. It was nice and light. Solid 3.5 stars. Trails pub is sorta out of the way from downtown SJ. I mean it is walking distance from City Hall, but you keep walking down a deserted street and it makes you wonder if you're going the right way. However, once you go in, it is a cute Irish(?) bar. My friends from out of town was visiting, so we had dinner in downtown, and decided to drop by to check out the quasi-night scene. We didn't feel like going to a club, so we decided to check out Trails pub. Not bad...4 cups of beer for about $21 dollars. They have a good selection of beer, and the bartenders are nice. The prior review by another customer about an aggressive bartender unfortunately reflects my recent experience here as well. I love to support small businesses and local, independent merchants. However, ownership of this establishment really needs to step in and take control of the situation. Large chains like Chili's or BJ's would not allow an employee to treat customers the way this bartender treats people, so small businesses should adhere to the same standard. Only positive I can mention is that this place does have beers on cask, which is a real rarity in the South Bay. But seriously, the bartender is "the face of the bar" as people in the industry say, so it is very hard to get around unpleasant and aggressive treatment. read more

A shepherd's pie with a wonderful selection of British ales. So good. So very good. I thought this place looked like shit at first impression. I had high expectations for this place since the Yelp reviews were so high. I can tell you that it's definitely not a trendy bar. However, after being in there for a bit, it really grew on me. I wish there were more places like this around here. The place is chill, the bartenders are chill, the selection on tap is awesome, and I will be back for more delicious British fare. I'm not sure if this is a place that many of my friends would like (or for that matter, many of the people I know), but I just love it because I am in love with shepherd's pie and the selection of beers. I will definitely be back. The Ramsey's Fat Lip Ale was a good choice. I had the Dragon slayer IPA also but the taste seems to disappear immediately after it goes into your mouth. When I drink an IPA, I'd expect a tiny bitter taste to linger around for at least a little bit, but this one just seems to escape your taste buds. I was a local and really wanted to like this place. The pros: - If you live downtown, it's local, and you can walk there. - Dave was super friendly and there was a female that works (worked?) there, whose name I can't remember that was also very personable. - it's a dive bar with a lot of history, which I love. That's where the pros ended for me (I say this because there are several regulars there who seem to love the place so I'm willing to concede that this place just wasn't a good fit for me as an outsider) Cons: The remainder of the staff are beyond rude and act like you being there is a disservice to them personally. I've been to many a bar - dive or otherwise - and have never been treated poorly until coming here on an intermittent basis. (Again, see the exceptions to this above) The food: is bad. I can't fault them for that since again, it's a dive bar, but there is zero pride in even making the food good "dive bar" food. It's just bad. The beer: their beer selection is extremely scant, but the prices are reasonable. Overall impression - I started just catching an Uber over to 7 stars, which is another dive bar with literally none of these problems, or going to Cinebar. A review of my downtown wouldn't be complete without Trials! Easily THE best watering hole in San Jose, my husband and I can generally be found here every Tuesday for Scoot Night. Rob & family have done a wonderful job since taking the place over and continue to provide a great environment for great people. Cute story: Trials is where my husband and I first met (and fell in love, aww). Rob was nice enough to let us take our engagement photos at the bar and we had a blast (and got really good pics too!). I always wanted to check this bar out and I finally had the chance. It is off the beaten path, but worth it. Plenty of beers (some good dark ones). The cask conditioned Black Prince Porter hit the spot. Unfortunately, I had to be good, so I only had one. The decor has many chotchkies, which you can use to test the poor vision, or sobriety of your cohorts. A cool non-judgmental, non-hipster vibe for a place you can just put back a pint. read more

This is a nice spot with a lot of character inside. I tried the Dragon Slayer IPA and it was alright to me. After drinking so much dark beer (stouts/porters), light beer sort of makes my stomach mad. I like how they have hand pulled beers. I didn't get a chance to try any though. The one I wanted was out. This is a great spot to have a drink after work. It's intimate and cozy. You order at the bar and then they bring your food to you. The bartenders are always friendly. You can tell there are some regulars that come here quite a bit. They only have a couple tables outside on the sidewalk. For a vegetarian, their food is okay. They have vegetarian appetizers but only two vegetarian entrees and both are mediocre (Boca/Garden burger or Vegetable curry). But I always come back for the beer and the convenience. read more

Trials is kind of dive-y, but I mean that in a good way in this case! It's small, it's dimly lit, it doesn't seem like much of the furniture matches, but it's just a fun bar to hang out at! I love that they have board games to play while you hang out with friends, and everyone who goes there seems so friendly that we've actually picked up a new friend on occasion who saw what we were playing and wanted to join in. The food is ok at best, but no one is really coming here for a quality meal - you come here because it's juuuuust far enough from San Pedro and the hubbub of the downtown bar scene that it won't be too crazy crowded, but close enough in case you feel like going somewhere else later in the night. Yep, I just decided Trials Pub is my favorite bar in San Jose. By far the best bar downtown. The reason why downtown bars suck: lame people. Thugs from Hayward who come to downtown to holla at hoochies and commit violent acts, while being loud, annoying, and rude. Very seldom have I ever had a good time downtown. Trials is the exact opposite of that scene. A cool historic building that houses an English pub with an eclectic selection of beers on tap that you will seldom find elsewhere. Although beer is the highlight, as far as I'm concerned, there liquor is CHEAP! Real cheap. How bout 12-year Scotch for $6.50? Makers and Knob Creek for 6? Grey goose cocktails for 6? Crazy. The food looks pretty good...pub food. Traditional English fare that goes good with lots of beer. I did try some of their fries. Steak fries, nicely crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. It seemed like the dudes there came to chat and have a good time, not to compete over stupid slutty whores. Also, they weren't angry and were polite. Quite a phenomenon. I really feel bad for most women at bars and clubs. Why? Well, I know I have mentioned the "Bay Area Bell Curve" before. But I haven't quite explained what it is. Guy orders his drinks, girl orders hers, guy asks bartender to split the tab. Bartender cannot believe what he is hearing. Archie sitting three feet away can't believe what he is hearing. Girl begins to check her watch every 10 minutes. Archie laughs. Sorry girls. This pub is pretty cool if you want to avoid the insanity of downtown San Jose while watching the lower half of the bell curve make total asses of themselves. read more

There are some things that, once heard about through the grapevine, are so intriguing they must be experienced, even when said "mystery thing" is known ahead of time to be awesome (as in the case of bacon-flavored chocolate bars and cartoons about talking fast food items) or heinously awful (like milk-flavored beer and two girls, one cup). Not even three hundred years of logic and reason can never hope to compete with blind curiosity. When I first heard about Trials' curry chips, my brain put everything on hold for a few minutes while my brain tried to comprehend it. Curry (addictive, masochistic spice of spices) + Chips (fried potatoes...you know, PO-TAT-OES, boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew) is equal to or greater than FUCK YEAH!? Hmmmmm. This must be tried. If not for science, then for a potential yelp review. The next time I was out in the bay area I insisted that I be brought to this "pub". Oh, they call it a pub, how quaint, I thought. Perhaps they'll put a union jack in my cheese sticks served with a beer I totally didn't order because they didn't stock the one I ordered. When we showed up at about 9pm, I sat outside on the patio while Misty S and Dave R went inside and did all the ordering. Given my knack for attracting attention and bullshit, this was probably for the best. While I sat outside, taking pictures of myself with my phone (don't judge me, fuckers), I could over hear people talking, in like real British accents. Be still my beating heart. A pub where people are actually from the culture. Next you'll tell me that my chips will be actual, no-shit British chips, and not those pencil-thin scrapings we call "french fries". And the curry will actually burn my tongue with spiciness. Oh my god. Is that my Lindeman's Framboise that I ordered as a total joke because I didn't think they'd have them. This is the sound of me adding "gravy and cheese" to my list of things not to give to a friend whose complaining of the heat from a hot buffalo wing. I was tempted to order their curry chicken (apparently their specialty) or their bangers, but thankfully before I could further embarrass my party with my uncivilized naivety and piggish overeating, they closed the patio, and as I had managed not to get any gravy or curry on my outfit at that point, I felt that going inside would only expose me to the risk of ruining my otherwise fuck up-free night. I figured I'd cut my losses and get something to eat back at the hotel. But I'll be back soon. And by then I will have failed so many times to make good curry chips at home that I'd be willing to pay double the normal price to eat it off of yesterday's newspaper. this might be the best bar in the bay area, and bizarrely enough it's located in lovely, metropolitan san jose. reasons while trials pub should not let me and my friends come back: 1. on my birthday someone ordered 15 "kamikaze" shots when there was only one bartender working. i think the only shot more embarrassing would have been 15 purple hooters. 2. through some momentary lapses in sanity a few of us (i'm not naming any names) are now connected biblically by less then 6 degrees to "don" the 75 year old right wing, republican asshole who sits at the bar every night torturing it's patrons with his insane diatribes. 3. last but not least- my man almost got into fisticuffs with their best customer, "tim" the self proclaimed mayor of trials who is there every night from about 6 o'clock on. had jason of swung and killed him trials may have had to shut it's doors completely because without tim's bar tab they could no longer pay their rent. yet still, lovely trials keeps welcoming us back and pouring the best pint sized six dollar makers mark and ginger you will ever drink. read more

I came here with some friends on a Sunday night after a random visit to the Tech Museum. Everyone was famished and we actually were planning to go to Teske's but they were closed- just our luck. All I have to say is if you like the possibility of cockroaches that can fly into your hair, then I guess you might want to come here. We saw two huge daddy cockroaches on the wall attempting to climb but they kept falling down, quite possibly because of their sheer size. If that couldn't get worse, they even had WINGS. *Shudder*.. Cheap drinks!!! yay!.... I want to go back for some English pub food because my friend ordered some and the fries were good. They also have fries with garlic cheese sauce, and that's my kind of fries I believe. This bar is a nice place to meet with friends but can get a little crowded. It's much better than any other place you'll find downtown if you want a casual, friendly atmosphere. Monday Night Trivia is a lot of fun (even if it makes me feel stupid). 1664, Stella, Newcastle,Hoegaarden, and Guinness on draft (among others) made me miss the pubs I frequented nightly when in London. They keep it pretty original here...you even order food at the bar only (typical in traditional pubs). The only difference between a real British Pub and an American British Pub: Tipping for a drink in Britain is not customary at all; tipping in America is pretty much mandatory. We were weighed and measured and eventually found innocent by the barjudges. All the pub folk greeted and congratulated us on our nights victory. It was great. There was no anger or pretense at Trials. I came here after the Ducks whooped and whaaped the Sharks 5-2 with two other friends this past weekend. We were a bit hesitant to stop in Trial's Pub because of our Ducks paraphernalia we were wearing. Well... Veni, Vidi, Vici! Trial's Pub is one of the better pubs I've ever been to in the States. While it's not perfect representation of a British pub it sure comes close. The beer is pretty much all British and Irish. The ambiance is Euro sport. From Futbol to cycling. Flags are appropriately displayed everywhere and there is a nostalgia that brought back memories of backpacking trips and the excitement of where I was going to sleep that night. My nights libations consisted of Fat Lip, Dragon Slayer IPA, and a Monks Brown Ale. The Dragon Slayer IPA was at a level above the rest that night. Very balance flavor and not too bitter. The Fat Lip was supposedly the most sold beer at this PUB and one of the biggest sellers in the US. It tasted like an unfiltered wheat beer and was okay. The Monks Brown Ale wasn't as good as a New Castle or a Smithwicks. Trial's also has a dart board which we played till closing. It was a blast! read more

Nice lil spot where you can smoke and eat outside on a nice day but we opted to go inside for drinking revelry. There's a really nice homey feeling.....and by homey I mean super old school British motif going on. Imagine if you will - Harry Potter and in the movie there was a bar @ Hogwarts.....well there you go. There's a dining area in the back along with a great sign that tells you to order your food at the counter. Must be short on staff or something. Otherwise staff is really friendly and easy going - qualities I look for in the bar staff. And despite all of 'Belle's nagging requests they didn't skip a beat. One of my favorite places to catch up with friends and grab a beer. They have pretty good food, cool bartenders, and a really lowkey vibe. Lowkey and a little hipster. Please note that they only have one women's stall for the bathroom, so yes, there's usually a line. But, they do boast a lot of games that you can grab and play--including really hard Trivial Pursuit--so if you feel like you may be going on an awkward and/or first date, this would be a good place to go. Came here Friday evening with a couple of fellow Yelpers. Very cnveniently located on 1st St, right next to the light rail. Provides for a quick vehicle free option for a late night out. Parking is quite easy once the courts have closed and the work day has drawn to a close. ~ 5 stars for location Walking up to the pub, you see the small groups on the sidewalk tables outside - it's very informal, people hanging out drinking, smoking and they do serve you outside as well. The pub itself is quite small - it appears to have been a house that has been converted to a pub. Very charming interior with a little lounge-y area by the window and a narrow bar with a row of stools. There is also an area in the back with tables for those who want more of a sit-down dining experience. The bar area is covered with all kinds of eclectic junk from across the world - no doubt contributed by bar patrons from across the world! Very cool and informal. ~ 4 stars for ambiance Quite a selection of beers on tap - and $5 for a 20oz Imperial pint for most beers = excellent deal! I had the Dragonslayer and then a Stella. Food menu is quite typical pub fare - the curry chips sounded good. We ordered the mild curry chips and a platter called the Ploughman's Plate ($9)(menu describes it as wedges of cheddar, brie and pepper jack, and green apple served with a sausage roll, salad, bread, pickled onion and Branston pickle). The Brie was quite good - and the bread was bakery fresh! The Branston pickle was quite interesting - I couldn't figure out what was in it though. The sausage oll was awesome - what's not to like about sausage encased in pastry and deep fried? Mmmm - perfect bar food. Curry chips ($6) were meh -a little soggy and the curry was just kinda ladled on top so once you were done eating the top layer, you just had some fries underneath. I must confess that I like going to Trials to hang out with friends because it is extremely "chill". By that I mean that they forgo the typical bar strategies to get you to drink more: ear-drum bursting music and painfully dark lighting. Trials is great if you want to go out with friends yet still be able to hold a conversation and see them. Unfortunately, the bartenders at Trials knocked down the rating significantly. It doesn't reflect well upon a bar when its customers are pleasantly surprised at receiving adequate service. On more than one occasion I stood at a sparsely populated bar while the bartender stood around and chatted with the person directly adjacent to me. I don't take well to being blatantly neglected, much less when I'm trying to overpay you for beer then hand you an extra dollar for pulling a simple lever. I rarely fail to tip, but I have done so twice here because I'd rather keep my measly dollar than have it go to a smug rockabilly's hair grease purchase. I recommend this place to grab a pint, unwind and chat with buddies. Beware of the hipster pompadour wearing bartenders; they are pretty shitacular. read more
