I bought a motorcycle from out of state, and needed just a simple inspection - usually in and out in 5 minutes. My bike is completely unmodified and in perfect working order. My interaction went exactly like this: "Hi, can I make an inspection appointment?" "Are you a customer here?" "I haven't brought this bike anywhere yet so I guess... no?" "No we won't to it, customers come first." "Ok can I get it done after them?" "No, customers only - we only take care of people who take care of us." The kind of person that takes care of customers needs, recommend what is needed, and doesn't try to push things that aren't. I went there for an inspection he said I only have stickers for my customers I said ok as I was walking out he said unless you want to pay 100. So I paid because I needed it. I don't know why but I went there for an oil change. He gives me my bike back with the engine terribly shaking at idle. Mysteriously my oxygen sensor came loose just after he finished the oil change. Then he tried to tell me I need motor mounts. Total scam joint STAY AWAY. also gave me my bike back full of his greasy palm prints. VERY RUDE GUY. Also import note he won't let you watch him work on your bike. He tells you to sit on some dirty nasty stool just out of the shop. So he can fix one thing and break another. NEVER AGAIN. I've been using Triborough for six years for my 1972 CB450 cafe racer. My experiences with TM have been overwhelmingly positive. Mark taught me that maintaining old bikes can be difficult and expensive. Still, he put a lot of work into it, and it runs well when I follow his bike care directions. These mechanics revived and transformed the piece of garbage I bought on eBay into a working cafe. When I bought the bike I didn't have a license. I remember when the bike was finished and I asked Mark (the owner) about upgraded shocks. He told me, "Why don't you start with getting a license?" I laughed, but eventually got one. Mark is a straight shooter (acts a bit like Robert De Niro in Meet the Fockers, kinda looks like Bruce Willis, but has more hair). While I wouldn't call him a Soup Nazi, I would say Mark can be curt (but seriously, if you're riding a bike, you should be able to take that!). Still, he's very honest and nice. I have always been charged fairly. He has also towed my bike for free to another shop for specialty work, and has given me great riding tips. Mark and his crew have also schlepped the bike off the tow truck many a time. Here's what the guys at TM did on my forty-four year old bike: Installed: -Progressive chrome shocks; -Russell fittings; -speedometer/tachometer; -new fender; -fork seals; -bucket headlight; -turn signals; -gas filter; - petcock; -Teflon front and rear brakes; -new tire inner tubing; -knee pads; - license plate holder; - carbs; -Bar end mirrors; -replaced right and left switches; -electric charging system ignition; -ignition coils, battery monitor, -new battery; -new stator custom for charging system; -new British made chrome tail light, and a -battery indicator. Alright, I had some bad luck on Sunday. My tire valve stem broke on my bike and I had to walk my motorcycle 45 minutes to this shop since it was the closest. I left the bike in front of the gate, dropped my key in the slot, and returned when the business opened on Monday. The guy on the phone, Mark, was terse and uncooperative with my questions. I understand, it's not fun to cater to a newbie like me, but if I'm asking for an explanation of the fix, responding condescendingly isn't the best strategy to keep a customer. That wasn't the worst bit. When I arrived at the shop after the initial check-in, about 2 hours in, he had the tube replaced, nice and dandy. I had walked straight to the shop, not noticing where my bike was located. When I met with him, he said the bike is all good, out front. I asked for my key to do a test ride myself, and he said, there's no need for a test ride, I fixed it, that's it. I said, alright, let me have my key and I'll pay you. He digs into a shallow cardboard box with more than 20-30 customer keys. As he digs, he gets aggravated, asking me questions about what the key looks like. I showed him a picture I had taken the day before. Even more aggravated, he takes the entire box of custom keys and slams it upside on the floor of the shop. What. the. hell? There was another customer in the vicinity as well. How would you feel if you were a customer and your items were treated with disdain because someone had a bad morning? It wasn't right at all. The inspection, normally $6, was also upped to $10 because I didn't come with an appointment. $4 won't bother me, his dishonest business practices was clear from the get go. The shop wasn't tidy either. Layers of dust on bikes that were "ready" to be sold. Disorganized shelving and empty shipping boxes scuttered on the floor. I get it, mechanics have a bit of a grime-induced environment. But I've been to other dealerships, including Honda-Yamaha and it wasn't like this. Unfortunately, I was in an emergency situation, and a beginner at motorcycles, and didn't have much choice when I needed my bike fixed. The bike runs smooth now, the fix was fine, but the customer service left me feeling shocked, alarmed, and frankly, saddened. I don't recommend this place. I don't recommend working with Mark. The extra bucks you pay at the dealership is worth it over the mind numbing customer service practices of this shady, shady shop. read more

Do not visit this shop (unless you have no other choices). It's been a while since I decided that I was done with them for good. After two visits I've moved on - I had a simple inspection and a tire patch done during one visit. A brake job during a second visit. Both times I picked up the bike, the mirrors were disassembled and left loose when the bike was returned. In fact, I won't swear to it but it appeared that the mirrors were swapped out on me with a sparkling new bike of the same type parked out front. That's not why I gave them 1 star, it's the fact that the rim on my rear wheel was dented, I also found a nail still embedded in the rear tire and they let me drive away in an unsafe vehicle. I ended up going to Speed Motorcycle (in Manhattan) to get the work done correctly. Triborough guys are competent but like most shops do not treat customers with respect. I discussed the issues with the owner and he set them right but I'd had enough so I moved on. BTW - I felt the pricing was based on customer experience/appearance and not typical but I work so that was not a major gripe. My issue with this shop is trust in the workmanship and the fear that they will (or will not) do the right thing safety wise. If I broke down and they were the only ones available I would visit and then take to another shop to confirm the work done. These guys have inspired me to buy the manual and do as much work as possible on my own. read more

I've been around Greenpoint my entire life and this shop opened a decade or so ago. I'm not sure when, but its' been around a long while. Defies belief based on his service, but I digress. Around 22, I wanted to buy my first bike in the states, since my riding had mainly been done overseas, and came here first. Back then, I thought maybe because of my age, he was kinda of dismissive, but still helpful. His inventory of used bikes was weak and the bikes themselves, were not in good shape, loose wiring, missing trim, just overall weak. That same day I drove out to another shop and dropped 3 grand on a new bike. Almost 8 years later, I come back and I bring my new Moto Guzzi for Mark to take a look at and give its first oil change. He starts bitching for 5 minutes on how Moto Guzzi isn't a reliable bike and then continues to shit all over it. He keeps saying over and over, "these are garbage, they aren't reliable, they don't work well, blah blah blah blah" meanwhile if you take a look around his shop, the quality of his own work is shade tree, back yard mechanics type of shit, and yeah Mark, I think that. I used to reprogram EFI systems, seam weld frames, build roll cages, rebuild blocks and turbos and my work never looked as horrible as yours does. Tried this place twice. Once he told me to come back at 10 the next day, and when I did, they weren't open. I waited for an hour, and they never opened. So I changed my day and went to Motorgrrl (avoid that place, too). When Motorgrrl fucked up an install and I wanted to get my crash guard fully on right, I stopped by again. This time the dude was like - why would you get a crash guard. Was it made in China and you bought it online? It doesn't look like it was made for that bike. You won't be able to fit through traffic. Then he said "Good luck" and literally turned around and walked off. Uhh- dude- I just need to pay you money to fix a thing. I don't need your opinion on crash guards vs lane splitting. This shop is honest, has fair prices, sticks to deadlines, and most importantly they do good work that they stand by. I am not going here to have my ego stroked, I have a problem they have the solution why waste time over pleasantries. Solid shop. I don't think the owner, Mark, knows it, but I've brought every single bike I've owned to him throughout the years. One of them he's just outright rejected to work on, which I actually understand. What you can expect from this place is an honest opinion. The gripes about the owner's attitude are right on target. No doubt, Mark ranges from abrupt to offensive in his interactions with customers. Having dealt with him occasionally over the past few years, I've concluded that he is prickly but not mean. But who chooses a motorcycle mechanic based on friendliness? I've taken my bikes to several shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan over the past 5 years. Only two -- Triborough and Speed -- have proved themselves capable of actually fixing a motorcycle. The other shops (I won't name names, but they're all in Brooklyn) literally can't seem to fix anything. This place is great, and Mark a great mechanic. I have a 72 CB350 and it is hard to find people to work on them. A lot of folks are saying that they are gruff or not the most friendly, but somebody below said it perfectly, "Its a motorcycle shop, not a beauty salon". I've take my bike there a few times and have gotten strait advice, great work and an amazing price. Especially for vintage bikes it is hard to find someone that knows what they are doing and that can do the work well, quickly and at a fair price, TM is great on all fronts. I took my bike to another mechanic that held it for 7 MONTHS and charged a bunch of money to do, not a whole lot. I took it to mark, for $150 he fixed what the other mechanic 'fixed' and told me the other items he recommended i get done. He suggested I get new carbs, he helped me ID a good set of OEM carbs, he rebuilt them, installed and tuned them all in about 4 days. when i got my bike back it runs better than at any time 5 years i've owned it. I haven't been happier with my bike or mechanic for as long as i can remember. The long and short is if you want to be mollycoddled and fussed over, probably not your guy. If you want your bike taken care of and have great work at a very fair price, TM is the way to go. read more

Go somewhere where the techs and mechanics have been relentlessly drilled by HR to say the right things, smile while answering calls and have all their mechanical experience from Google docs. I brought my bike in today because there was a grinding sound from my rear brake rotor. Greatest bike repair shop of them all. I used to get my BMW and my Ducati serviced at the dealers as I did not know any better and could probably buy a house with the money I wasted. Someone I met at the track recommended I check out Triborough Motorcycle (the guy used to work there) and I did. The service has been very good on both bikes, filled with advice and info that only someone long in the business could provide, and that at a fraction of the cost of the dealer. I now go there for pretty much everything for both bikes and even get dynamic balancing for my track wheels. The owner is a no bullshit living encyclopedia of motorcycles an knows crazy details about bikes I did not even know about. A lot if his customers have been coming for a while and probably would not go elsewhere. Highly recommended. read more

It wasn't $15 of merchandise. It was a labor charge for a patched tire. Having never paid for patched tire, I assumed that was the going rate for the service and labor. But, after I checked online with other places, I saw that the average price for a patched tire was $15-20. I don't know, maybe their rate for a patch IS $50. read more

Definitely avoid. Mark plain and simple did not do good work on my bike and tried to rip me off. Bought a used Ninja 650R (first bike) that needed a fender, turn signals and a new chain. He said he would order the fender and work on the other repairs. He kept the bike for 2 weeks before I called him and asked what the scoop was, "the fender hasn't come in yet" "have you finished the other repairs?" "no". Had to convince him to do the other repairs and I would come back for the fender. My turn signals broke within 2 weeks. My chain was put on too tight. The visor on the helmet I bought from him broke in the first week. I came back and had him fix the turn signals, his response? "That's what you get when you put cheap Chinese crap on your bike". You mean the cheap Chinese crap YOU installed on my bike? If you would have told me you were putting on low quality blinkers, I would have upgraded. BTW, 3 weeks later the blinkers broke again. The helmet, took me a MONTH to convince him to swap out the plates for the visor. His response? "You sport bikers want to have everything perfect". You mean like a functioning visor on what turned out to be a POS helmet YOU sold me? He only respects a certain type of biker, doesn't give a crap about the rest. I had the fork seals done here because my regular mechanic was away. The bike was ready in two days, got it home but one of the forks still leaked. I took it back and they said they'd do the job over for free. Thats great. Got the bike back quick, the forks don't leak but they feel empty and bottom out all the time. I can't say for sure but it feels like they just drained all the oil out so they wouldn't leak and put them back together... I like the straight forward approach and quick turn around time, but I won't go back. read more

Went to Triborough to have sliders installed and a fender eliminator wiring job. I had installed the new fender, didn't want to mess with soldering the wires. Owner comes out after a few hours and tells me the fenders will have to be cut to install the sliders. British Customs sliders are the only sliders on the market for my bike that fit without cutting. I go inside, and he ignores me for 30 min. while talking to someone else. So I go outside and wait around until the job is done. Bike comes out, fenders intact. All this because I don't own a torque wrench. Granted, the soldering I would still have trusted to a shop. Took them four hours... better than waiting for days. Triborough is, if nothing else, an example of how proportional a mechanic's disgust is to the experience of their customer. If you don't already know a lot about your bike, they treat you like a nob. I am totally respectful to businesses so they don't f**k up my ride, in case you're wondering if I'm a horrible customer. I went to J&L once and was STILL polite, after the kid at the counter asked for cash, and had no change, and they f*****d up the carburetors to they'd backfire and I had to take the bike right back. Triborough charged me $140. No idea if that's a lot or not. Guess I'm still a newbie. The lesson here appears to be: learn how to maintain and modify your bike yourself. Needed a place to do the initial service on my cruiser. Did some research on line and this place came highly recommended. The service was done within an hour while I had a cup of coffee at the dunkin donuts down the block. The shop was packed with tons of all different types of bikes which was comforting. The owner/manager was a no nonsense honest dude. This place is now officially my motorcycle service center. Bus on the corner will take you right to court square where you can catch the G E M or 7 train in case you need to leave your bike. read more

Triborough has been around for a long time (since the mid 90s). I remember riding by it but had never used them until recently. It is located on McGuinness Boulevard near the entry point of the Pulaski Bridge. I saw Mark, the owner, and two other mechanics working on the bikes. The building is dark, tall celinged with big, imposing, Japanese bikes hanging by chains from the ceilings. I'm a little scared to walk into the repair area. I went there to get the NY state inspection and to replace an air filter in my zr750. Mark came down and looked at the bike and saw that it had brand new tires (Bridgestone Battlax 023 -- dual compound sports touring tires) on my bike. He asked, somewhat, suspiciously, "Why didn't you have it inspected at the place where you installed the tires?" I replied, "Oh, it was in New Jersey. They couldn't do NY inspections". (Tires, especially motorcycle tires is a big thing for me. I'll revisit the tires topic at the bottom of the review.) In addition to the NY state inspection, I requested him to replace the air filter on my bike. They were able to do the inspection and filter job in about 30 minutes or so. It was late February in NYC--35 degrees Fahrenheit outside, so there weren't that many bikers riding yet. "You didn't need a new filter. We'll just clean it out and it should be fine." OK, Great! That made me happy. Less money to spend. I asked for a quote on a valve clearance job from my ZR-750. He said that it would cost around $150 to check the clearance and a total of $200 to perform the valve adjustment (if it needed adjustment). However, he said that for a bike like mine, there is no need for valve adjustment until it hits 20,000 miles (mine had around 15,000 miles). Not exactly what the factory manual instructed, but it seems that he knew what he's talking about from real world experience. Back to the topic of motorcycle tires. I had called around for tire install prices before coming here. Triborough quoted me $90 to install 2 tires (tires not included). That is not a bad price for tire installation in the NYC area. (I've been quoted $150 (tires not included) to install 2 tires from a bike shop in the upper east side and $190 (tires not included) from a bike place in Williamsburg. Outrageous! I know!) However, I didn't get my tires done here because I did find a better deal somewhere else -- Trackside Motosport in Jersey City. $305--includes the 2 tires (Bridgestone Battlax 023) and installation! Triborough is a small operation and they seem fair and honest. They could easily have tried to extract more money by performing unnecessary repairs or replace parts that didn't require replacing. I also appreciate the fact that the person taking my orders is also a mechanic and could give a fair and flexible estimate on the job (unlike some places where the person is strictly a pencil pusher just going by the hourly rate quote book). Customer service is a little gruff and there's not much hand holding. But there are other places that will give you all the hand holding and coddling, if that's what you're looking for, all at a premium price. read more
