(5/22/13 Update: The free fair zone in downtown Portland and the Lloyd District has been discontinued as of fall 2012.) For the most part, I love Trimet. The Portland mass transit system is excellent because the culture to use it is there. I wished that Seattle was more supportive of public transportation. Since my last trip nearly 3 years ago, the Trimet MAX light rail system has added a new line. There are now four light rail lines which travel in all directions of the metropolitan area. They even added a stop right by the Amtrak and Greyhound stations which make getting around town after you arrive easier and free if you are staying downtown or in the Lloyd District. MAX is great because there is frequent service, though it can be a pain to take in the downtown region. It seems like there is a stop every 2 blocks or so. I think they could make the stops farther apart since there is bus service as well downtown. It took far more time than I would have liked to get from the Pearl District to the Lloyd Center stop near where my hotel was. A roundtrip time of one hour seems ridiculous given the short distance. Taking a bus might save you time if it heads in the direction you are headed. In addition to the fareless downtown zone which is massive BTW, I like the the all day roundtrip ticket option. This is great for the traveler. You can roam all over Portland without concern about bringing enough dollar bills and coins to pay for your fare. They have ticket kiosks at every downtown MAX stop and they take credit cards as payment. Overall, I like Trimet. Public transportation in Portland is excellent because it is widely accessible and has been embraced by the community. I do not feel the need to drive a car here unless I am headed further south, like to the Woodburn outlet. read more

I love trimet- riding transit! However I recently applied for the bus driver position and I shouldn't have... if you had difficulty passing the class c driver license test I wouldn't even try for this job! I attempted to reach out many times to the person who lead me through the "zoom" interview and got no response, I have horrible test anxiety! I reached via email and a very kind person named Suzie responded, I believe she is the only one who actually cared! I was sure is I would pass the drug test( I smoked a lot of weed)... each test cost $10 I took it 5-7 times I lost track. They say they will reimburse for the test costs.. I assume they would if you pass the drug test. I'm out $70 and trimet said I can reapply after two years with a treatment program for my "legal weed usage". However if you think about a driver could be stabbed, spit at, burned with beverages, exposed to toxic fumes... I was a waste my time and I'm out $70! And I now have useless CDL knowledge in my brain... which be taken up by happier thoughts about my black life mattering for another company.. read more

I would love to see TriMet find a better way to communicate with passengers on their MAX trains. Last night there were problems with a train at the Providence Park station. This caused delays in the rest of that part of the system. I ended up sitting at the Sunset Transit Center for an hour before being able to catch a shuttle bus, #20, and finally get home at 8:15 PM. I want to emphasize the following: 1. System delays and accidents happen. It's frustrating as hell, but that's how it goes. Just like having a car that breaks down, It's part of life. 2. Your employees are fabulous. They were real champs last night in getting us to where we needed to be and even had us laughing. Why I'm writing this again: 1. YOUR SOUND SYSTEM ON THE MAX TRAINS IS TERRIBLE AND UNINTELLIGIBLE. I could not hear what you were trying to tell me. I was lucky a fellow passenger explained everything to me. I went to buy and load a virtual Hop FastPass card on my even account and it never showed up. When I rode on TriMet... pre-Covid,... including the MAX (Metro Area Express) it was an adventure. There are too many people that board (get on) at the Hollywood Transit Center who aren't wearing deodorant... and that specific person was just doing sit-ups or something at the Hollywood 24 Hour Fitness. It's horrible in the summertime when there are random pasty women who bring their dog(s) on board and haven't taken enough of their medicine(s) to function as common sense decent human beings.... that's why there is Transit Security, Cameras, and PPB (Portland Police Bureau) officers, detectives, and plain clothes (specifically the police are wearing regular clothes and not a uniform) officers on board. The Information workers and Census or Survey workers are equipped to hand out or give pertinent (important) information. As with every major city there are criminals that ride TriMet buses and on the MAX trains. The Streetcar (these are smaller trains similar to a trolley or cable car) or Lightrail extends past the South waterfront (on the Westside) and also on the Eastside... but on specific days (usually not in the summertime) there are few riders that are paying the correct fare(s). There are always some grumpy tourists that forgot to get their foreign bills exchanged to US currency riding on TriMet buses in August, September and sometimes October. I was asked to pay a tourist's fare (he was from Germany) before (the tourist's female companion asked me for $ 5.00 randomly). There are TriMet buses with a few seats in the front of each TriMet bus for most disabled riders, elderly riders and personal shopping carts. There are specific locations for bicycles, wheelchairs (manual and motorized), and personal shopping carts (these are the tall or short rectangles (with two wheels) sold at most grocery stores... just ask for one at the register).... on the MAX and Streetcar or Lightrail. Once when I was riding home on the last bus out of downtown prior to 2017.... there was a group of younger people talking about how bad the bus ride was... I told them that the only person who cared when I was pregnant riding the buses in the early 2000s was one bus driver who always made sure to break with care when I was standing (I stood because in the early 2000s on the route that I was riding there weren't any available seats... and none of the riders bothered to give up their seat(s) for me). After having ridden the TriMet bus with family and friends I can safely say... if you get to the MAX or bus early enough... and there aren't any re-routes or delays... you will get to your correct location or wherever you are supposed to be on time. It is worth it to buy a calendar and a watch... maybe... buy yourself a new FitBit. Once, there was an older darker skinned woman who hadn't ridden on the TriMet bus before. She asked me where to board for the Oregon Zoo.... so I told her.... it's the Shuttle she wasn't friendly after that.... so I told the TriMet bus driver not to let her board... he complied... and she was told to wait for a different TriMet bus. There are frequently spills, and a not so great smell (it's a stench) on certain MAX train cars....because... it's public transportation. And no,... you're Not supposed to hurl on the MAX trains. read more

In the last 10 shifts 4 of my trains never came making me late. The orange line smells better then the green line by a fraction. Saw less then 10 people naked and only a few shoot up so mildly safe. Terribly upset people are using our transit system to travel to the afterworld. Trimet doesn't state to take you to any afterworlds so stop jumping infront if the trains and making everyone late. Lovely sceneries. Everyday I see people shooting up right around the rose quarter and once saw a dead body! Exciting! Do not EVER scan your hop pass until your bus or max arrives!! As you get charged when you scan it and your time starts immediately. Sometimes the max trains dont come at all, repeatedly, and if you have a two hour journey, you will run out of time before you get to your transfer and you either have to pay again or walk. Plus, who was the moron that put up the "paid fare zone" signs up 30 feet before you can purchase a ticket or scan a card? Portland, OR was my first introduction to public transportation. Charlotte, NC, where I grew up had some public transportation, but it wasn't something my family did. I like how highly it is valued here, a high premium is placed on it. Portland has expanded its bus routes over the years, as well as where the light rail goes. I do like how there is now an app to purchase tickets and passes on, that cuts down on the paper use, and you don't have to go to the store to purchase a monthly pass, just do it on your phone while you are waiting on the bus, which is awesome! The routes are easy and clear to understand on the maps. The stops are marked clearly. When I lived in Portland, there were several blocks in the fare-less square downtown, but they have done away with this since I have been gone. I really miss living in a city with a good transportation system. Granted, Portland is the only major city I have lived in with a transportation system. The only other cities I have been to with such a system have been in Germany and Taipei, Taiwan. I think it is unfair to compare it to either of those and I have nothing else to compare it to in the US, therefore, this review might be a bit biased. read more

Is there any other public transportation on this planet you don't have to show proof, beforehand? There are fare inspectors, but isn't that a little after the fact? The workers are swell and do try and care. Almost all of the passengers are, too. But, you must be alert and aware at all times. I agree that security must be improved on Max lines and problem platforms. I also am glad the city is trying to do something about homelessness. It has certainly doubled in the last 5 years. Gayle and I are undecided on whether Portland drivers (based on our very limited experience Downtown and in parts of the SW) are inconsiderate drivers or they just don't know how to drive well. And when you overlay that with the somewhat overwhelming one-way grid and traffic patterns in the Downtown area, confusion predominates and danger lurks. We also did a little freeway driving (in a borrowed car for one errand) and noticed that even with timely signals, you had to force your way into another lane. But that didn't stop others from just wandering into yours and usually at a slower speed. People also seemed to like to honk their horn for what seemed like for any mistake, real or imagined. Our notable Downtown experience was when my son's mother dropped Gayle and me off near the Marriott. We held up light traffic at the corner for no more than 30 seconds. But that was enough for one guy in a pickup (with 2 little white dogs on his lap) to honk repeatedly and then yell profanities at Gayle (of all people), before flipping us both off as he hit the accelerator. And Merry Christmas to you too Sir! So the smart thing to do in Portland is to take public transit, bike or walk. And we were impressed! The first night we took the Streetcar within "Fareless Square" and a short walk later had a marvelous meal at Andina. We also took the Red Line to PDX yesterday which gets you right to the Terminal Building and for less than $3 from Downtown. The trains are clean, don't smell, and seem to run on time. They're bike friendly too. The waiting kiosks that indicate the time until the next Streetcar is also a nice touch. And since Downtown Portland is so nicely walkable, that's what we did. But is was always nice knowing that we could take the Streetcar if we got tired or the destination was too far. read more

Was in town for a weekend and used the MAX to get all over the city and for sightseeing (green and yellow line). Including going from the airport to mid-town (red line). They continue to expand the system (Orange Line due in 2015) and get new cars so the growth and improvements are also nice. Here are the current MAX lines for reference. What a "most excellent adventure". Riding on the Trimet confirms how much I love public transit, and offers a goal for what all city transit systems should aspire to. You don't need a car. If I was in Portland, I'd take the public transit ALL THE TIME. With my handy iPhone (w/ Google Maps) in tow, I was able to plan out trips anywhere, and in the most efficient manner. It was cool to live by my wits and not have to worry about driving. Traveling by PDX bus/train is always fun! I love feelin' like a vagabond when visiting cities away from home. ***** PLUSSES: o You get to see neighborhoods you might not have seen before. o You get to meet interesting characters (and PDX has some unique folk). o Drivers are super nice. o You don't have to worry about finding parking. o They have numbers to call to find out the status of your bus in "real time"! o Free downtown, and only $2/w transfers elsewhere---a STEAL! o You're living green and savin' da "Earf"! ***** "MINUS" (well, it was my fault) Had one experience which was "non-triumphant", but it was toward the end of service late one night, and I didn't pack a warm enough jacket---this was purely all on me. I had the pleasure of using Trimet's light rail and buses when I was in Portland this past weekend - in fact, I am writing this as I await my connecting flight to go back to LA. I love that one ticket can be used on any mode of public transport! And two hours for $2.50 is a great deal. $5 for a day pass. It was great being able to take the light rail from Portland Airport all the way to the city center - so efficient! My friend lives in Hillsboro and picked me up from the station. Excellent indeed. My only quibble is that this morning, the Red line had to go back to Kings Hill due to local flooding (there was quite the downpour today! I'm still damp hehehe). I caught a bus to a certain point, and eventually was able to catch the Red line and resume my course to the airport. My bus driver was incredibly kind and helped me find my way, even if it turned out I was going in the opposite direction. Oops! So in spite of the rain and its subsequent delays, I couldn't recommend Trimet highly enough. Thanks again :) read more

The drivers are rude, the bus is always dirty and stinks, there is always trash on the bus. The customer representatives are rude and no matter how many times you call to report an issue it never changes. It's unsafe as far as the illegals and homeless and mentally ill. It's completely abusive that they raised the price and they haven't improved the service at all. It's the worst I've ever seen as far as being on time and having attentive drivers. I have seen them stop way after the stop, I have seen them start driving when people are still trying to get off the bus, I have seen them drive right past people that I knew and was waiting for when they were clearly standing at the bus stop (and the driver had the balls to argue with me about it) there are no rules or standards while on the bus. I have seen people playing with themselves while on the bus, I have heard more speakerphone phone calls and heard more YouTube or social media videos at full blast than I care to admit, I have seen people breaking up their weed on the bus, I have seen people who have actually pissed or crapped their pants subjecting everyone else to the smell (where people literally don't want to sit near them) and the bus drivers never do or say anything. It's a terrible overpriced service and it's unsafe and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

I'm a densha otaku so I love taking the MAX. One of the cleanest and best run mass transit trains in the states, it is amazingly simple w/ just 3 colored lines + streetcar. I had to ride bus 3023 because I had to go into work due to my truck getting stolen. Prior to getting on the bus I searched online tirelessly to buy fare for the day due to my phone being ancient and not having contactless payment nor a Debit card that has contactless payment. If this is the case with Trimet you are screwed unless you have cash. But this is not why I am rating them one star. I didn't have any cash and I explained my situation to the bus driver and he was insanely condescending and tried to claim that I had ridden the bus a week prior and thus was trying to work the system. I told him multiple times that I did not ride the bus the week prior and that he had been the bus driver to drop me off at work (he gave me a hard time then too but not as publicly or as embarrassing) and he swore that I had done this previously. It was just really unprofessional and shitty to give me a hard time when I had really tried to get my ducks in a row but trimet doesnt even offer you a way to buy a day pass with a card online or anything. The bus driver was just a serious bully/dick and should he written up or fired because I just started working and having an income and then had my truck stolen. So luck has not been on my side and despite the fact that this driver was not affected by me not having my ticket he decided to still ostracize me in front the bus full of people. Worked wonders for my social anxiety. Shame on this guy and Trimet for hiring drivers that have no customer service ability and demean there customers. read more

First, kudos for having the MAX and streetcar system. That's why Portland was designed with freeways with 3 lanes, if you're lucky, in each direction. It was analogous to San Diego's mantra of P.L.A.N. (Prevent Los Angelesation Now). I agree with the basic layout of the system. The long east-west sweep from Hillsboro to Gresham, the spur to the airport, the north line along Interstate, and the east side connection down to Clackamas make sense. It's almost surreal that Tonya's Clackamas has joined the ranks of connectedness to the nerve center of Portland's mass transit system. The one that eludes me is a southwesterly sweep down along I-5 into the PCC area, Lake O, Tigard, Tualatin, and Wilsonville. (Sorry, I think WES is a little weak, running on a route that is too far west, too limited in scope, and too limited in hours). I like the newer trains with the swept back ends and flat floor transition from the platform. I think the raised platform cars of yesteryear were a pain, for both able bodied people who could conceivably take a spill and those needing extra time and assistance. I don't know much about the buses. I have ridden the 72 (down 82nd) when the Clackamas rail line was not in place and that is an eye-opener. It is known as "the Jerry Springer line" and I'm sure it is not the preferred route for bus drivers. Also, I will not mince words and say that the bilingual messages are irritating, not to mention "sanctuary city" politically correct. Many other systems with large Hispanic populations don't have them. Then, if in Spanish, why not Russian, Vietnamese, and Romanian for those immigrant communities in the metro area? Even telling them on which side the doors will be opening? Get real. If they had a dedicated SW MAX line connecting downtown roughly along I-5 to Wilsonville and ditched the bilingual messages, I'd give them 5 stars. read more

Ting ting! Oh my goodness who knew I would find better public transport than the VTA in San Jose and Muni in SF. After then I will never look at an American tram the same way I did before. The Tri Met is the best. Anywhere I want to go they can take me there. I love how the buses can cover longer distances than the ones in San Jose. When I want to go to my office Tri Met and I'm done. Want to go to the Town Center Mall Trimet and I'm done. Everything I need to find can be taken care of with Tri Met. The trains here are larger and bigger than what I see in California. Buses are cleaner and run more frequently until 9pm. They run at 30 minutes on Saturday and 46 minutes on Sunday. These times are not bothersome because the Tri Met has a really good on time record or they can be punctual. No delay no problem. Perfect score for this public transport read more

Hey. So 9/10 I use quarters to ride the bus. Whether im buying a day pass or 2.5 hour pass. Here's the deal. No matter how slowly and mindfully I put the quarters in, I've had 3 separate occasions where the machine jammed. Annoyance aside, what really bothers me is being treated like shit by the bus driver for it, each time. Shit happens and its not as if I just dropped them all in all at once. Maybe consider making bigger slots instead of taking it out on riders. Secondly. The back door is almost always an issue. Not just for me, but for everyone. The bus drivers are almost always oblivious and have to be asked, and sometimes get pissy about that too. They are also very hard to open, especially if you are someone with a disability. Being bed bound I requested a trimet lift wheelchair ambulance ride to go to a dental appointment. The customer service person said that I needed to have the wheelchair verified. I don't own a wheelchair but use one of the many here at the SNF. I asked if they had to verify all of the wheelchairs in the SNF. The CS said no. She said that contact management to have a wheelchair assigned to me. She had no right to make that presumption nor is it my business to arrange for special privileges and to deny another patient the need of a wheelchair. It is odd that other wheelchair ambulance service do not need to verify wheelchairs to satisfy ADA rules. read more

Transit here is great compared to most cities... i am from Austin and we are very behind the multi-modal transit trend- the transit free square covers quite a bit of turf. The only negative i can think of is the Portland Street car - they really need more street cars and maybe they should modify the route a little bit so they can run at a better frequency - they are too crowded. Many times its just easier to walk. Sounds like portland is getting more street car routes so maybe it will be just as nice as the street cars you find in Toronto - which has several routes in the city core. read more

Get the PDXBus app for iPhone and/or use Google Maps Public Transit! The Streetcar is awesome - free within Downtown, and the $2 all-day pass you can get on it if you want to go out of Downtown works on all the TriMet buses all day! The only thing is that the system is pretty dead slow after like 8pm. I almost had to wait half an hour for the #20 bus from Downtown eastbound on Burnside at 10 pm...and that was not fun (being randomly chased and yelled at by psychotic ppl while waiting, etc). I have complicated feelings about TriMet. I've used it extensively and gratefully since I moved to Portland in 1989. It enables my husband and I to save thousands of dollars per year by sharing one car between us. On the negative side, TriMet has been very slow to get even a single electric bus into its all-diesel fleet -- when Los Angeles retired its last diesel bus many years ago, and cities like Indianapolis and Louisville KY have run some electric buses for years. In Portland Oregon, which is allegedly fighting climate change! TriMet has also by turns ignored and been adversarial to the environmental justice community.. Upshot: I will continue to ride TriMet, and to also be an engaged critic of it. read more
