Love this shop. We rent a house in Lewiston every summer and go fly fishing with Darren. He's an amazing guide, gives solid instructions and really helps you learn the swing of it. He's the first fly fishing guide we've went on a trip with and he couldn't not have been a better guy. If you are new and need a fun relaxing environment with excellent coaching, Darren is your guy. He even packs ingredients for lunch and makes a delicious sandwich on the spot while you catch fish. Photos show the first couple of fish we got. I should preface this by saying I only bought a hat and hooded sun shirt. Anyway, so fishing - it can actually get really hot on the water. And sunny. So if you want to avoid slathering sunscreen on, the best bet is lightweight, light colored clothes that have some kind of built in SPF. Our fishing guide, who deserves his own non-5 star review (unless you count amount of marijuana smoked while supposedly working), recommended this place as I was suffering a bit from heat. From the outside, the shop doesn't look like much, but inside - wow. This small and neat shopped is like a fly fishing paradise. As I'm not a fly fisher and also not really knowledgeable about fishing, it was overwhelming. But cool to look around and see all the crazy things people use. Anyway, they had the sun shirt that I was looking for, and I found a nice hat. So overall, cool spot to visit, and great if you're into fly fishing. Excellent shop! Clean, and beautifully organized, one stop shop. Pat was so kind and knowledgeable. She helped my husband select some items for fly fishing and even took the time to show him how to use the rod as he had never done it before. He liked the shop so much we went back the next day to buy a hoodie and a shirt. Just used up the last of my flies that I bought from this place. Top tier quality and acceptable prices. It was my first time fly fishing and I asked the owner a for a few tips. He showed my friend and I some mistakes to avoid when casting, how to set up our fly rigs, was even nice enough to show us some good fishing spots. This was about a year ago and still I've yet to have a more successful day fly fishing. All the flies he recommended were getting hit after hit. Great service and great products. Herb is the name of the man behind the counter, I believe he is the owner. Great guy and clearly a great fisherman to be dropping knowledge like that. Beyond grateful I stumbled upon this place while fishing the trinity. Planning on making a trip out that way soon and I most definitely will be stopping by this fly shop. 10 Stars!!!! Herb runs a first class operation. My family had never been fly fishing before and the day we spent with Herb & his guides was the best day that everyone had while we were on vacation. Everyone caught fish!! That was pretty exciting. Our group ranged in age from 10 - 64 and no one had fly fished before. By the end, we were all pretty comfortable with it enough to want to do it again. We certainly didn't master the cast but we really enjoyed ourselves. Tips for ladies: thoroughly hydrate before you get there and then use the restroom before you put on the waders. Drink a lot of water while on the boat and expect to use the restroom again only after the excision is over.... You are not going to get those waders off to pee somewhere gracefully. Also, the guys are truly guys-guys and it won't dawn on them to give you this advice :-) You will have a great experience and will adore Herb. He's a sweetheart! read more

This place rocks. I'm as close to a newbie fly fisherman as there is; both Herb and his wife, Patti (sp)?, we're incredibly patient and helpful in guiding me to the right equipment and answering my endless stream of questions. Patti recommended a particular fly pattern (a Mr Pimp, I believe) that hooked me onto my very first steelhead hours later. And she carefully guided me thru the initial set up of my fly rod. I returned today to pick up waders and shoes so that I can finally give fly fishing my full attention. Again, super nice people, and their store deserves to get solid return business. When I'm back in the area, I'm definitely going to return for their advice, and if circumstances are right, I'll give their guide services a shot. read more

My wife and I are wannabe fly fisher people. We went out yesterday with "our guide" Darren V. What a great teacher! He helped us to become comfortable with casting. He was so positive and patient. The fly shop. Any local fly shop must be supported. That said, if you are thinking of fishing N Cal rivers and tributary s, this is your source for info and gear. Yes you can gear up on line, but you can't match the many years of collected local experience that resides within the hallowed walls of this church of fly fishing. Love this place! So helpful. They have just what you need. I needed a rain jacket in an unexpected downpour, not to expensive: they had a Hodgeman in my size for $30. I needed a fly box I had seen a local with - they had the same one. I saw a booklet ("Hatch Matching" - get it if you can) after I'd already settled up - they gave it to me for nothing. We are new to fly-fishing and to this area, and we stopped in here just to rent waders and get a bit of local advice. Ended up with both of those, plus 45 minutes of free, hands-on casting instruction from Chris, the young guy tending the store, who was super-friendly and full of useful advice. Store looked well-stocked with locally tied flies and various equipment, though I didn't browse thoroughly. This place is a bit out of the way about 3 miles out of town, but if our experience is any guide, I can imagine that they have a loyal following of more experienced fishermen. read more

I wanted to learn two-handed rod spey casts so I shot Herb a mail. He shot me back and said Kit Kreick was my guy! We sorted out Kit's available dates and locked on April 27 & 28. My wife Laurie who is my fishing partner joined me on the trip. Herb and Kit had put together a 6wt switch rod package for me to use. While I have a long way to go to refine my spey casting technique, after two days thanks to Kit and Herb I built a solid foundation for further development. Added bonus was I hooked an ~ 5 lb Brown Trout within the first 90 minutes! Kit was an excellent instructor and made learning fun. Kit also worked with Laurie on her single-handed technique. I am a big believer on learning right on the water with all the river dynamics. On day two Kit brought a 4wt switch rod for Laurie to use! She had a blast. Being a full service shop we were able to purchase an excellent package (switch rod, reel & line) for both me and Laurie so we can continue to work on our spey casts. So another great experience is now in the books with the Trinity Fly Shop team! We already booked our dates for October Steelhead fishing!
