We decided to apply to volunteer with Paws for Purple Hearts. They train service dogs for Veterans and we were trained to be puppy parents through a series of classes so we could learn how to maintain consistency in their training. We bring dogs in training into our home for short periods of time so they can adapt to various environments as part of their training. We reinforce their training and maintain consistency for them while helping them acclimate to different homes and environment. Oh my goodness, what a wonderful experience. The staff is so dedicated to the animals and the cause and so knowledgeable about training and caring for these dogs that they are preparing to become service dogs for Veterans. There is so much that goes into training these amazing animals. It has been a truly rewarding experience for us to be able to work with these amazing future service animals.

We also provide a unique type of therapy at our local VAs and DOD facilities called Canine Assisted Warrior Therapy. During this therapy, our program instructors teach veterans how to train service dogs. The dogs are then placed with another veteran who struggles with the same issues that they do. All of our services are provided free of charge.

We got to learn about critters of all kinds and interact with the animal ambassadors first hand in a pretty private audience as well. It was just us and another family for the showing. Our experience was Pre-Covid I might add but these folks seem to still be hosting a very safe operation. They are do You Tubes, live feeds, school programs and outdoor events, spaced out and utilizing mask which I appreciate.Lots of us self employed don't get PTO etc so it's nice to see safety measures being taken seriously. I like to send the YouTubes and lives to my friends in the homeschool community etc because all the information Once in a Wild too can be incorporated with the information Amanda shares in their learning.I've seen some special guest as well on their lives, they always keep it interesting. From what I can see they are making rounds at schools more often now to bring the joy of learning about animals to the classroom as well. Our time with Once in A Wild was a private party and it was a special and unique treat we absolutely adored and cherished the experience. Will never forget it Thats for sure! We had a bird fly over to us and it landed on my partner like they were old friends lol!! Gave us all a laugh and lots of joy to see. Also got to hold some exceptionally beautiful exotic reptiles! Shout out to Princess!! All the critters were extremely healthy and well taken care of and among them was many rescue animals that needed someone like Amanda to give them the correct care called for and you can see the live they placed into everything they did.We would love to do this experience again and it's been some time but since things are getting a little smoother to operate safely again we hope to make that happen.Definitely a fun thing to book for a small educational based party or for a school. Highly recommend and respect their operation and hope to see the mission supported it's amazing!!

Douglas, their planning coordinator, worked quickly and was able to get us booked the same day. He referred me directly to Amanda, the owner, to help me pick which package would best suit our needs in addition to which animals would make for the best experience. She was extremely knowledgeable and responsive. Bridget was the animal handler for our party and arrived an hour early to setup and make sure the animals were comfortable. She did an awesome job of managing 7 different animals and a bunch of curious children (and adults). She knew so much about each of the animals and made the experience fun and educational for the older kids and adults. I can't recommend Once in a Wild enough. They're extremely professional and made my son's birthday very special. We will definitely be using them again in the future!

My dog being highly driven was a bit of a handful at first to say the least but I found Karen and her staff to be professional and compassionate toward the needs of not only the dogs but their owners as well. They worked tirelessly to help each team meet the necessary requirements to achieve their goal of becoming an AKC Certified Therapy Dog Team. As with any type of training one must practice outside of class the techniques given while in class in order to accomplish the intended goal. I know I spent many hours each week working with my dog and the hard work paid off. In response to Rebecca's review regarding her dog and what took place during her dog's final evaluation, one must understand that being touched by strangers is the entire concept of what therapy dogs do and passing this portion of testing is not only mandatory but critical to the certification process. As a classmate of Rebecca and her dog, I can tell you first hand that her dog did more than just "show teeth", he actually snapped /bit at the trainer twice during the touch evaluation. To me , an untrained eye, it was apparent from the start that she and her dog were both very shy and quite unsure about the entire process. I'm not sure she fully understood the amount of time and effort neccessary to complete the required training or perhaps she didn't realize that her dog was not as confident and friendly as she might have wished. There is no shame in that as not every dog is meant to do this work. What I do know is that this organization is doing an awesome service for the community and Changing Lives One Paw Print At A Time.

My dog has never had any type of training before so I thought it was nice that they put you through obedience school first. One of the ladies that answers the phone is not very prompt at all and hardly checks her phone. She had contacted me 3 days after the 1st class had taken place, that I could participate if I wanted. Since I was absent the 1st day of class, I had asked everything that they did the 1st day, but even with that apparently they went over a lot because throughout my time taking my dog, I was always getting in trouble for things I apparently should have already known. So it would be nice if they make sure everyone is well aware of all the rules and what you should and should not do while training your dog. Since I was a week behind, I felt my dog was always behind in the classes since all the other dogs were ahead. They shouldn't let anyone into the classes after they start. For the final exam, they went over the stuff that was going to be test and would practice with us. One thing they didn't practice was for a stranger grabbing our dogs paws. My dog and I weren't prepared for that and my dog showed a little teeth. And because of that my dog was deemed aggressive and failed. My dog has never been around strangers that grab the paws and I felt this was a waste of money because although they do teach some obedience, it seemed your dog must already be super friendly with strangers beforehand, and I felt I was mislead because the girl on the phone had said they could teach us everything with no problem. They obviously need to have other requirements to participate or maybe they just tell people that to get as much money as possible already knowing you'll fail later, I hope that's not the case though.
