TAMC ER does a pretty good job as a military, free at point of care, emergency department. Just like any other comparable medical system, like the National Health Service (NHS), Kaiser, etc. it's going to get the job done, get you taken care of, and send you to the appropriate disposition area, whether that be admission or discharge. I had an experience with the ER here and got seen in a reasonable timeframe, was cared for in a medically appropriate, prudent, and evidence based manner with courteous and attentive nurses and doctors. In a lot of the bad reviews below, people see criticize TAMC as not matching up to the "concierge" or business model hospitals in the civilian world. While YES, places like Castle have nice rooms, fancy TV's, waiting rooms with water and coffee, a gazillion staff....ultimately you're paying for those amenities. TAMC ED makes sure military members and their families are seen, and appropriately medically cared for with the limited resources they have- free at point of care. It gets the job done. read more

IF I COULD I WOULD GIVE ZERO STARS. This is one of the worst hospitals on the island. They wait in the waiting room was forever and mind you there was not many people in there. When we got take back still there were not much people in there a lot of empty beds. My husband went here puking and crapping his brains out and they did nothing for him. They did the bare minimum and we got a lot of looks and rude comments. The nurses are not nice and don't help at all. They all just sit at the nurses stations and talking and laughing. I've asked multiple times if we can see a doctor so he can get something to stop the vomiting. They asked for a stool sample and he gave one and only to tell us they lost (misplaced) the sample. The doctor that we had told us "we need to go his PCP if he wants help" which is very unprofessional. This visit was during non operational hours for his PCP. 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND coming here if your active duty, reserves, and national guard. read more

This place SUUUUUUUUUCKS! If you are in serious pain or a life or death emergency don't come here. Honestly, if you need anything that requires urgency...don't come here. I'm writing this as I've been lying down for the past hour in the waiting room. I've been here since 9:45 am and it's currently 1:30 pm. I came in because my lower back is in immense pain and I can barely walk or stand up straight. All I've done was watch kids and old folks come in and get helped. The type of care I have received at Tripler is terrible. I am surprised they don't get lawsuits every month. They only prioritize kids. Every other department is poor in education for nurses and attention. I have went into the emergency room about a dozen times while stationed here as active duty and always put last of the list during ER visits. During these visits, even after having post op symptoms I am typically dismissed and given medicines to "numb the problem". To be quite frank I don't want to numb anything, I want them to do their job and solve the issues they can. My wife worked for there medical maintenance department and also saw the ugly of Tripler. She saw that they had instruments in calibrated for years out of preventative maintenance period. Which means ALL of those instruments read results wrong. They have the worst attitudes for nurses and are always on their phones. They don't even care. The charge nurses are even worse. Wrong results for medical screenings and worst attitudes. I've heard people would rather not go to a hospital than put up with this bs. read more

I have used Tripler's Emergency room once and I will never ever use it again. I got a hit on the head by a baseball and my colleages were concerned about a concussion so I went to Tripler. I should have just went any Emergency room but Tripler's. I waited over 5hrs to see a doctor and he basically saw me for a couple min to do some easy tests that anyone could have done basically. Yet they took an hour to discharge me because of the paperwork. The overall process took me 7hrs lol What a waste of my day. I almost passed out because I was not being able to eat or drink since I didn't know when I was gonna get called and would miss my turn, not from getting a hit on my head. read more

Tripler ER is one of the most of the most important places in Hawaii for military families. Like anything else with the government, there can be some hoops to jump through to access and you must be prepared with your ID card and paperwork. The Doctors, Nurses and Staff are very helpful and friendly and truly go over and above to help. read more

Don't come here if you're dying, you'll be dead in the waiting room before even being seen. Should of just went somewhere else.

DO NOT come to Tripler hospital if you are in serious pain or have a serious injury. Arrived here at 12:30 and am still sitting in the waiting room 3+ hours later. Literally cannot see out of my right eye at all. It's progressively gotten worse since waiting. I came here early today around 5am and they said "we think it could be conjunctivitis, but we're not sure" then sent me home with eye drops. Which made it worse. Hopefully the next doctor I see is better than the last one. read more

The absolute worst ER in the state. I'm so disappointed. I came in at about 8pm and didn't leave till about about 4-4:30am. By the time they called me it was about 12:30am. The doc didn't see me till 2:30. She asked me what was wrong I told her what was wrong and all she said was, "Well, we know what it is and it SURE sounds like Sciatica pain. There'll be no need for tests and ex rays. I'll give you medication and send you on your way." I was in awe. Like are you serious? I'm waiting all these hours and that's all you have to do and say? Shame on you Dr. Jean Martinucci! Yes, she's the one that saw me. SMH ‍ Ughz never again. She's the WORST! If you don't care then find a job where you do or just stay home. The medication she prescribed didn't do anything for me. Just imagine one of the strongest medicine for pain. Yup! Didn't work! Well a few days later I went to ER again for the same pain. NOT at Tripler again though. No ways they're (Tripler) terrible. I went to a local hospital. Superb staff and I had exrays and an MRI done within an hour from the time I got there. Low and behold they found a lot of stuff going on with my back and I had surgery the following day. Just like that. The doctor was awesome. That's what I call a doctor. One who sincerely does he job because he actually cares for his patients. I'm so grateful for him and the surgeon for taking great care of me and making sure I got better. I'm now back on my feet and doing my daily activities. Don't go Tripler ER. read more

Brought my daughter in at 630a for sharp eye pain. Brought in back at 830a. Seen by practicing nurse at 930a. Waited 30mins for a doctors note. Over 4 hours of waiting for 15 mins of examination. Hurry up and wait at its finest. read more

This is by far the worst emergency room I've ever been to. No matte true time of day, day of the week, severity of the injury or illness we've waited 3 plus hours to even be brought back to a "room". A word I use loosely because most of the time it's a shared room or cubicle like space. Meaning there is zero patient privacy you can literally hear everything going on with the person next to you. While it could be understood that TAMC is a teaching hospital and things take a little longer the patient care seems to be nonexistent. Coming here from Walter Reed in Bethesda it feels like you're stepping back in time twenty years. The whole emergency department needs an overhaul. I watched a woman check in who was bleeding from her abdominal surgical site and they asked her to wait to be triaged! She was literally bleeding enough that the rest of the waiting room was concerned and the staff just didn't care. It sucks that this is our designated ER because as someone with a chronic illness that creates many problems I don't see a way around coming here. If you have other options I urge you to take them. read more

Rating this as I have been waiting to be seen for over 3 hours...ridiculous. The staff at the front desk told me that there's 7 people ahead of me. He then informed me that I can go check at the nurses station to verify. I proceeded back to the nurse station where I was told there are two people ahead of me. Horrible!!!!!!!!! If I could give negative stars I def would !!!! I must say this is the absolute worst place. The ER is so dirty!!! Every single time me or my family went to the E R we waited a minimum of 4 hours. My daughter sat in the waiting room with 102 fever for at least 3 hours. No one ever checked on her. When I asked to speak to a charge nurse, they didn't seem interested in giving any type of good customer service. The staff is rude and not helpful at all. Let's talk about how nasty the rooms are and the waiting area. You feel as though you are going to get a staff infection just sitting there. This is so sad because with almost 30 years in the military, I have never seen anything like this place. I heard all the horror stories and wanted to believe that it was an over-reaction. It makes me so sad that this is the level of care we are getting here. read more

I will never EVER forget the visit to the TAMC ER a few years back. I had a terrible migraine that did not respond to my usual (no narcs!) meds at home and sought help. Well, the !@#$%^medical student (who are NOT allowed to push IV meds) gave ME the HALDOL supposed to be given to the abusive out of control drunk off her ass patient NEXT TO ME. I saw him going for my IV and before I could ask him what it WAS; he's already injecting it. He NEVER asked me my name to confirm it was the right patient nor did he even glance at my wristband ID!!!??? WTF??? I woke up way later DROOLING on my pillow. Still had a horrific migraine! I am a retired ARMY surgeon and am ASHAMED of this ER. It is disgustingly poor. The CO of the hospital needs to get ON it and clean the place up--both with disinfectants as well as personnel! I never EVER received such poor care anyplace else in the USA! OMG, get on it TAMC! *IF this had been Queens or Kapiolani? I would have sued and won w/o any court battle!!! you cannot sue the military so they get away with a lot of crappola!!!! NEVER AGAIN. read more

I spend about 3-7 hours here every time i go. My 12 month old son went in today with what they labeled either rsv or bronchitis & i left untreated with notes to return if breathing proceeded to get worse ... This 'cold' he's had for 5 weeks, with snot, sleep apnea, congestion , difficulty breathing, cough, decreased appetite, watery eyes , drooling , took me almost 6 hours to be seen they took chest X-rays and said that his breathing was good enough to leave even tho he's wheezy and hacking said if it were to get worse to come back in to er for an inhaler....Doctor coming on duty straight said 'i just clocked in , we're always short staffed' as the MAIN military hospital i would assume service would be better . I have had the most terrible experiences here. I would not recommend this place to anyone . read more

I was in the ER for hours and for a large chunk of the time no body checked on me. I understand it gets busy but they gave me no call button and no one came when I called out or the machines were beeping. I went in because I have epilepsy and I thought I was having a seizure with additional facial numbness. They were not helpful at all and the nurse who discharged me told me that seizures were not considered an emergency. I have had to go to many ERs and this was one of my worst experiences. read more

Worst er experience in my life. Waited for hours just to be told they "have a room for me but are not going to let me in". I came in because I couldn't breathe and what do they do? Absolutely nothing. My inability to breathe is not a thought in their minds. The "doctor" told us "oh if she's having trouble breathing then bring her back next time". Worst medical service ever experienced. Waited over 4 hours to be seen. Then once brought back to be seen we waited another hour in their cubicle. My wife had to help them do their job. They don't care about their patients. They are more worried about their food and their coworkers baby showers than their patients. We were asked to repeat the symptoms over and over as if the nurses don't communicate with each other. Why they even pretend to enter the symptoms in the computer is beside me. You'll be asked to repeat the reason for your visit a dozen times. Would never come back here. I would pay a good amount for a walk in clinic before I ever visited this shit hole again. The walls in the er room are disgusting and haven't been cleaned. Go to a walk in clinic and pay the money. It's worth it. read more
