The tl;dr of this review is that I had to report Matt to the California Contractors State License…read moreBoard because he would not fix faulty work he did. Curtain Rod I had him hang several things for me - including two curtain rods, bathroom mirrors, a hand towel rod. He had a very hard time hanging all of them. The curtain rod he failed twice and had to keep moving the wall bracket further from the edge of the patio door (I've included a picture of where he spackled his mistakes but then did not paint over it). After three months the curtain rod ripped out of the wall. When I asked Matt to fix it he told me it would cost me $125. He said that because the curtain rod held for three months that we knew it was hung correctly and my weak drywall was to blame. When I pressed him on this his solution was that he would come fix it but only if he could hang the rod into the door frames. Not only would this look bad and render my blackout curtains worthless bc of how much light that would let in through the sides, but it's entirely unnecessary when the rod and curtains weigh 12lbs total. A contractor should be able to hang a curtain rod into drywall. I have normal drywall and I've personally had no problems hanging things since the work Matt did, but even if he did "know" that I have weak drywall he should have hung the rod better. When I had a contractor come out to fix his work he was appalled at how Matt had hung the rods and discovered that Matt actually used screws that were too large for the anchors in both of the rods he had hung for me. I argued with Matt for a week about the curtain rod and when I finally told him that I wanted him to pay for another contractor to fix it and let him know that I had reported him to the board, Matt told me I was being "cold". He did end up reimbursing me for the contractor's work to fix the rods. The board still looked into my complaint and found that he likely violated the California Business and Professions Code (I've included a picture of the letter they sent me). Paint everywhere in my house While opening up the paint Matt used to paint my house so I could fix the damage done from the falling curtain rod I discovered that he had left a roller in the paint. I had Matt paint essentially my entire house, including the interior doors. The painter he subbed the work out to got paint all over my house, including all over hardware and fixtures. The painter painted the doors while they were still hung and just decided not to paint the inside of a hall closet door. I spent over two weeks marking places where the painter had missed and where there was paint that needed to be cleaned up. Despite me paying Matt to paint my house (and presumably for the clean up as well), it became my job to QA the paint mess. I've included pictures of where paint still remains today. Matt even gave me some razor blades so I could clean up the paint on my windows, floors, door knobs, tile, cabinets, etc. I am appalled that he thought that it was appropriate to imply that I should be cleaning up his mess. I had commented to him how the painter lacked attention to detail, but Matt was just as bad if not worse. Ceiling patch I had Matt remove a fluorescent light from my kitchen ceiling and put in recessed lighting. I've included a picture where you can see how poorly he blended in the area where the light was with the rest of the ceiling. The contractor who fixed the curtain rods was also appalled at how Matt left my ceiling. I didn't bother asking him to make it better at the time because I was tired of how long all the work was taking and I assumed he just couldn't do any better. It seemed fruitless to have him try to fix it. Door gaps I had Matt replaced an exterior door. At the time I didn't know what weather stripping was, but it looks like the weather stripping he used is too thin because I have large gaps around the door. It also looks like the door wasn't hung straight. I've included pictures of light from inside the house shining through the gaps in the door. Cabinet Painting The only thing I was pleased with was the painting of my kitchen cabinets that he subbed out through a guy named Randy. Randy and his team were professional, did a great job, and cleaned up after themselves. Conclusion A lot of these things I could have brought up to Matt before I gave him his final payment but I was exhausted after just moving and having to QA the painting for 2 weeks. I really just wanted him out of my house. But I strongly urge you to consider all this if you are thinking about hiring Matt. Not only was his work subpar but when I tried to have him fix an error that was clearly his fault (the curtain rod ripping out of the wall after 3 months) he tried to BS me saying it was my wall's fault and the contractor's board found him likely to be in violation of their code because of this.

I was so nervous about the photo and barn door above the stairs, because there was basically no ground below where I wanted it. Matt came in with all the right equipment and tools to be able to safely reach the exact spot I wanted them hung! These pieces are extremely large and super heavy too! The photos don't show how large they truly are. We are very happy with how they look in our home. Matt was easy to work with, professional and his prices are very fair. Next time we need help with something around our home we will hire him. We have been planning a kitchen remodel this summer and we have already hired Matt to demo and put everything in for us once we choose our new appliances and finishes! Can't wait to work with Matt again. I highly recommend him for any of your home repair or remodel needs!
