They are trying to sell the business, so that's both good and bad. They have really large inventory of trees, many of them you can't find anywhere else at some really good prices. You just have to be selective as to what you buy because they don't seem to be spending much time or effort to maintain their trees. What a hidden gem! I was looking for a banana tree and the blue Java really caught my eye. Tropica had dozens of them available and reasonably priced. All looked healthy. Even better: You get a care guide for every plant you buy. My banana recently grew its first new leaf and I am ecstatic. This nursery is a rare gem. The variety of gorgeous healthy plants and trees is astonishing, and the proprietor has a vast knowledge of them all. He is more than generous with his time when asked to share his expertise on selecting plants that will work in your location, as well as planting them and helping them flourish. Over the years, I've purchased many seedlings, plants, and trees from big box (::hangs head::) and local, family-owned nurseries. Never before Tropica Mango have I had a sizable, happy earthworm (!) tumble out of the soil of a pot I brought home to transplant! That alone speaks to the care and feeding that go into the luscious plants at Tropica Mango. So far as I can tell, Alex makes the Magic of this place happen all on his own. Hole in the wall that has lots of hard to find stuff. The customer service was ok. They were not at all helpful in finding the very specific item I was looking for except to give me general direction on where it was. All the carts were in very poor condition with flat tires. This place is quite amazing. I cannot believe I never knew it was here before. My girlfriend is crazy over growing our own food. However, we live in the city ,not the country so we really cannot do it. She is certain that we can and will. So when we came back from Italy last time, I bought 5 fruit trees. The AZ type of fruit, lemon, orange, cumquat, etc. I ended up by taking back the grapefruit tree because, I had no where to plant it. We ran out of space. Then we found this place, wonderful trees of all sorts. Now she is on a roll, we have to move or fill our entire land with trees. I am guessing we have to move. I think we have no room for more trees at the moment ,but when we do this is where we will be going for sure. If nothing else this place is educational. Lychee trees even! Did you know you could grow Lychees in the desert? I sure didn't....until I went to this little unassuming nursery which is also called Alex's Tropicals. I met Alex when I decided I wanted to try to grow bananas in my back yard. Not only for fruit, but for some reason when the houses were built, my neighbor's driveway angles upward so at any given moment if I'm in the backyard, I see heads bobbing up and down on the other side of the wall. Nothing against my neighbors, but there's something to be said about a little privacy in one's own backyard. So Alex recommended a couple of banana species - and even gave one plant free after one of them died on the first occasion - and happily they are shooting up so fast and healthy I will soon have my screen. On top of the great customer service, the nursery is a neat place to just go and look at the different types of fruit trees they sell. Everything from cherries to dragon fruit, lychee, pineapple, loquats, mangoes, papayas, etc. etc. etc.... It's mind numbing the varieties they have, and the place isn't even that large compared to other nurseries in town. Prices are more than fair, and everyone I've encountered there is extremely well informed and will answer any of your plant questions patiently. Their website is even cooler. I hope it gets finished soon, but you can't blame them for not having it completed with all of the info they're cramming on the site. read more

The husband / wife / dogs are knowlegeable and friendly... they will continue to offer tons of advice if you keep asking. Exotic varieties.. they also had the same brand (Dave Wilson) and some other unique variety of the fruit trees found at Bakers. I kept staring at a 3 variety peach tree w/ low chill hours, but alas we already picked up our trees a few wks ago. Im from California but im planning to move to Phoenix and I wanted to see what can be grown in Phoenix, so i made my boyfriend stop at this exotic place and gosh! There were so many more varieties than I anticipated. Even Lychee! My personal asian fruit favorite! Its not in a good neighborhood and it looked kind of shabby, however it was absolutely WORTH the visit. the people knew what they were talking about and they knew their product so well. I marked things as inexpensive but it's a relative thing. Considering the rarity, variety that he carries, comparable prices at other places, along with making his own "starter cuttings" that he sells very cheap ($5 for most rooted cuttings) he'll have something you will want and can afford. If you buy the smaller products, he'll tell you how big it needs to get before you need to up-pot it. He let us meander and look at everything without bothering us. If you don't have time and know exactly what you want, he'll help you and you'll be in and out in no time. He has printed instructions on care and planting and if you run into any problems, shoot him a photo and he'll let you know how to help out your plants and trees. He's very helpful and knowledgeable about his products. Talk to him about your property and plans and he can get you what will grow well there, level of care needed if you're short on time or are a newbie to growing, limited water, etc. His products are very healthy and well-kept and if you're looking for something he doesn't have, he can usually get it in for you (call ahead if you're driving a ways so you don't waste a trip). If he doesn't have it in, it may not be the right time to plant so call and talk to him first. It is a nursery so dress appropriately for damp or a bit muddy ground. Expect to spend more time there to take it all in. If you're loading these in your car, plan ahead with cardboard so we can all cut down on plastic usage. He will help juggle things to get them in your car. He is very helpful and knowledgeable and I loved the variety he carries and the affordability. As an example, our 3 gallon passionfruit was $48 while his cuttings were $5 for a 4" pot but they'll grow to that 3 gallon size in about 6 months. So depending on your budget, timeframe and experience level, there's something for everyone. Worth the drive. read more
