Delightful ambiance! Vinateria has an amazing happy hour so it can be close quarters evening time, but they seem to try their best to accommodate folks which I appreciated. I loved all of the food I devoured and look forward to being back. The veal meatballs were a real stand out and the brussels sprouts were memorable. The bacalao croquettes were great too, and a nice deviation from the usual ham offerings. We also got duck which I'm a fan of, but wish it would have been served warmer. Not pictured is the olive oil cake which I definitely recommend for a not too sweet treat to round out dinner. For drinks, I tried the Hugo Spritz which was too sweet for my liking. I was won over by a pear cocktail that seemed quite popular. I don't recall the name, but it should be on your list! Service was as good as it can be in a busy place. Food came out quickly! I attended a group dinner at this restaurant and was surprised that it wasn't better. We were a group of about 13 people but initially was placed at a table for 8 people. After playing musical chairs we were seated at a larger table and waited approximately 30 minutes for a waiter to come over with menus and take drink orders. Now the restaurant isn't big and they weren't crowded, but the workers seemed like they were overwhelmed. Finally the waiter takes our orders. He brought over some bread with olive oil which was pretty good. I ordered the meatballs with papadelle pasta with sauce and zeppolis for dessert. The meatballs were good (they were a little spicy) but they were sitting on top of what I think was polenta and I couldn't figure out why that was needed as the meatballs and the sauce were fine just they way it was. The rest of the food lacked ANY seasoning. Everything was bland, even the dessert. A few people that were sitting around me ordered the branzino and they said the same thing about their food. The waiter was asked to bring salt and instead of a shaker he brought a small bowl of salt with no spoon - people decided to use their fingers to salt their food because it was hard to get the attention of the waiter. This place is a gem. One of a kind in every way and I cannot wait to dine in again. The ambiance is dark, intimate and cozy. Clean and comfortable as well as the staff being super attentive. They're great with small groups and big groups. My group wasn't the smallest and everything went smooth as butter. The food was DELICIOUS and unique as well as the drinks. My friend and I came to this elegant spot for dinner. The space is cozy with lovely, simple decor with dim lighting. Upon being seated, we were served complimentary focaccia bread with olive oil and vinegar. The bread was nice and fluffy, topped with fresh herbs. It tasted wonderful with the traditional mixture of olive oil and vinegar. For the appetizer, we shared the Fried Calamari, which came with paprika aioli. There was a generous helping of the calamari, which was perfectly light and crispy, well seasoned, pairing well with the bold flavored creamy sauce. I was set on ordering the Black Sea Bass, but it wasn't available, so went for the Cod, which came with wild mushroom risotto, made with red pepper flakes and lemon. The Cod was pan seared with a slight crunch, delicate, flaky, tender, as well as flavorful. The risotto was enjoyable, with plenty of cheese and mushroom. As for dessert, we tried the Olive Oil Cake, which had berry compote and fresh whipped cream. This was oh so tasty! The cake was super moist, melt in your mouth delicious, while the berry compote was juicy, sweet, with luscious, velvety whipped cream. All the ingredients mingled beautifully together. Candle lit and dim, Vinateria is a cozy, yet lively spot in Harlem. It's quite noisy inside, so if you want more intimate and quiet conversations, this might not be it. I purposefully booked 6pm so that we could enjoy happy hour but since we were seated on a 4 seater table not the round tables next to us, we couldn't do it. We got marinated mixed olives, mussels, the seared cod, salmon and whole roasted branzino. We also got a tiramisu for dessert. While the food was a hit overall, there were a few misses. The branzino had the main bones taken out but some still remained and were annoying to pick out. Some bread and salmon had burnt bits, and the tiramisu was small. It is amazing how many new restaurants have opened in Harlem these past few years. (Hotels too) We we're staying nearby and came here for dinner and we're pleasantly surprised. They were pretty busy, and the service was a little spotty, but the food was very good. We started with wine and cocktails, marinated olives, cheese and crackers, polenta fries and roasted mushrooms. I ordered the whole branzino- admittedly the presentation was different. I've never had it served whole as if it were still in motion- at first I thought some ingredients were forgotten until I realized it was stuffed. Upon arrival once the hostess was available to greet me she was friendly and sat me at my table right away. The drinks were weak and not mixed well. Once I changed to my go to drink (vodka/seltzer) the drinks were better. My guests were also not impressed with their drinks as well. My dinner unfortunately was not that good. I got the ROSEMARY PAPPARDELLE which is lamb Ragu with Fresh Ricotta. It lacked flavor and I was not a fan of the lamb. It was ground meat. I thought it would have been shredded lamb as in other restaurants when I have opted for this meal. However my other guests thoroughly enjoyed their dinner choices. Fish and lamb chops. Lastly the service. While our server was friendly and nice, it was slow and lacked attention. Overall, great ambiance and vibe. The service was great even prior to us arriving at the restaurant since I called several times to ensure the kitchen would still be open. The kitchen was almost closing, and they allowed us to order in advance. Based on the reviews, we both ordered the black spaghetti. The black pasta was cooked perfectly and so flavorful! My birthday celebration dinner in NYC...came here with a friend. We debated about whether we wanted to come here, but we had reservations and we decided to keep. So glad we did!!! I ordered the pan seared salmon, they were gracious enough to let me substitute the cous cous for the risotto and mushrooms!!! Win/win!!! It was a amazing and my friend ordered the pan seared scallops, which he also enjoyed. We ordered the gelato and the olive oil cake, and somehow we ended up with all the desserts!!! I'm astonished that it has been so long since I've dined @ Vinatería and embarrassed that I have never penned a review... Both of those realization must now be extinguished. Last Thursday my office hosted a work soirée hosted @ Vinatería and it was wonderful. There was an array of tapas and small plates and they were all delicious. A few of my favs were the polenta fries, the white fish balls and the calamari. Another audience favorite were the veal meatballs, which had a hint of spice. We all enjoyed the endless flow of vino. The staff was gracious and efficient as they balanced their evening crowd along with the boisterous group of RE agents. Happy I have been reintroduced to this local gem. I myself had the black spaghetti which is sooo good if you're a seafood lover. I had a nice dining experience at Vinateria recently. I went to have dinner with a friend 8pm one night and I was glad I made the drive from Brooklyn. The restaurant was dimly lit and had music playing softly when we got there. It was a romantic vibe and gave all the feels on a perfect summer night. The staff was very attentive and came over quickly to seat my friend and I. They gave us our menus and told us the specials for the evening, which is what I ended up having (mushroom risotto with cod). For appetizers, we had coconut curry mussels and bacalao fritters. My friend had the grilled octopus for his entree. The grilled octopus was the standout dish! It was cooked to perfection--not too chewy nor overly done. I wish I'd ordered my own, but that's okay because it won't take me a long time to order as it did this visit, lol. My mushroom risotto was a bit lacking in the flavor department. It was very rich and creamy which I was happy about but it was bland to me. My friend (who is a chef) said he thought it tasted really good. My cod was too fresh for my liking. I would've liked it to have more seasoning. I ended up bringing my entree home and spicing it up a bit more before I had it again. Sea salt and black pepper did the job. For the chill, romantic vibes and great hospitality, I'll be back. The table that came with the bread was damn good too! Focaccia bread with lots of herbs and oil--my lord! Heavenly! Really enjoyed the ambiance and the people that worked there are super nice. We ordered the calamari appetizer which was perfectly breaded, salted, with a nice crunch. The spicy aioli that came with it was bomb! For entrees we ordered the fettuccine ragu, scallops special and brussel sprouts. Entrees were solid but not impressive. Decided to go for the roasted asparagus to share, the lamb ragu over past and the olive appetizer. The olive appetizer was very good - lots of salty and yummy olives with hummus and bread, a well put together appetizer. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and large portion to boot. We happened past this restaurant on the way to a neighboring place. The Grilled Octopus and Bacalao caught our eye, but other items on the menu were also interesting. We decided to stay and seated ourselves at a sidewalk table on this early autumn evening at 8 PM. It was comfortably warm. The restaurant was bustling, a signal that it must have a great reputation. From the beginning, the service was impeccable. Our San Francisco native waitress, new at this restaurant, was incredibly accomodating and attentive. We decided to enjoy two appetizers each. The Grilled Octopus was the standout. Incredible would be an understatement. It was served on a bed of calamata olives caramelized fennel, cherry tomatoes and capers. The Octopus was perfectly grilled, charred and tender, not overcooked. I could have consumed two and been in nirvana. We also tried the Bacalao which transported us back to Portugal. Crisp crust and soft center of cod, dressed in a sauce remoulade. The third course was steamed mussels in a Chimichurri broth. The dish was trimmed with crisp Sopresetta and sun dried tomatoes. It was a tasty combination but the mussel meat was rather small. The fourth dish was grilled Duck Breast cooked to medium rate and served with pickled onions and crisp pancetta. The dish was tasty but small. We also shared a plate of grilled asparagus which were delicious. The slight char gave these al dente spears a smokey taste which was complemented by a hollandaise dressing We shared two desserts, Tiramisu and Creme Bruleè, both trimmed with summer berries. Both desserts were sinfully good. As one would expect, a Vinateria like this had an extensive wine list. We both chose a St Émilion by the glass. The glass was generous portion and the wine steward/manager opened a new bottle for us. It was the perfect accompaniment to our dinner. We could have paired each course with a different wine, but that would have been too much alcohol. This restaurant was bustling even at 9PM when we finished. The outdoor seating conveyed an enjoyably upbeat neighborhood vibe that complemented our dinner. Our meal came to $110 plus tip, a good value in New York City. I thought the light wasn't turned on, but it actually was on and so it is super dark and the toilet is black....so just pray to God and may the force be with you that you're not stepping in a puddle of urine or whatever. I would love a well-lit restroom and not to mention, don't come here on your dates since you can't even go do an appearance check. Anyways, food and service was good. Got the following: focaccia - complimentary and it has a nice texture but the olive oil could have been better. Not aromatastic. Calamari fritti - good and paprika dip paired nicely, but wish there were some legs mixed with it. Grilled lamb chop - flavour profile is good, but felt it was too overdone. Could've been better when it is medium-rare rather than well done. It made it tough. Rosemary pappardelle - noodles were cooked perfectly and lamb ragu was nice but then once the noodles were gone, it was pretty salty and couldn't really eat it on its own. creme brulee - okay, this has to be the thinnest version I ever had in my life.
