Large oxtail plate: 10/10 they HOOKED my plate up with the meat and THE GRAVY! You ask that back home and they act like they don't hear you. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. I stood in line behind three customers who all placed their orders in the same manner. There was another person behind me as well. Suddenly, someone walked in from the back and had their order taken before any of us. We all stood there confused and puzzled. When we questioned it, the cashier told us that our orders were not taken because we "did not order when we walked in." There was absolutely no sign, no posted instructions, and no guidance explaining how the line or ordering process worked. How are customers expected to know what to do when there are no directions? We were simply left standing there and not served. We often hear about poor service at typical Jamaican restaurants, but this experience truly takes the trophy. While the food may be good, good food becomes irrelevant when the service is this bad. Customer service is part of the dining experience, and this was an absolute failure. This is the second time I have had a negative experience at this exact restaurant. I swore I would never return, but I decided to give them another chance. That was clearly a mistake. I will never support this establishment again, nor will I recommend it as I have done in the past. The service was unacceptable, unprofessional, and frankly disgusting. The staff clearly needs proper customer service training, and management is definitely lacking leadership and organization. When the location on Lenox Ave and W124 opened customer service was good. There was seating, which was usually nearly full. There is now an atmosphere of disrespect for the customers. The staff is preoccupied with app orders. There is almost no seating which is a big mistake. The food is generally very tasty, but instead of eating there 2 or 3 times a week. I eat there 1 or 2 times a month. I found this place on Yelp and walking into the establishment did not disappoint. The customer Service was amazing! They were very friendly and allowed us to taste things prior to buying, which is sometimes rare. We ended up going with the peanut porridge that was packed with flavour, not overly sweet and overall great. We ended up coming back the same day and ordered the sweet and sour chicken for dinner. I have only eaten the Curry Chicken, beans and rice and cabbage. All very tasty and good. The only issue I have is when they don't have cabbage, which is included in each take out meal, they have no other HOT vegetable in it's place. Let's start with the food..... incredible; which is why I frequent this location and suggest it to many friends. It's consistent as always and you can never go wrong with their Oxtails in particular! They have a winning formula with their menu bar none! The atmosphere is nice and has good curb appeal, a major improvement over Good Taste that was there many years ago! It's a little tight when it there's a line. Timing is key! However...... the service is a whole different story, and unfortunately is consistent as well ..... The menu is not in a prominent location which makes it difficult to decide what to order, since everything is delicious! This creates a bottleneck at the counter because you want to look at their selection in the showcase.... Everyone does this in general. So what most people do when they're not familiar with their dishes is to ask questions. This is where things can go South.....especially if you have the misfortune of encountering some staff members with very little patience and off putting behaviors..... classism and homophobia in particular. This comment applies to a few of their staff. There are others on staff who are very helpful and friendly. Having a "secret shopper " would root out that problem as a suggestion. As a person who doesn't fit the preferred demographics, being a customer here leaves me on the fence. I am hesitant to send friends there because of what they may experience with the some of the staff. It's best to order online or call them to avoid unnecessary hostility and judgement. I am writing this because of my last visit with my husband and me. I feel that people need to be aware of this behavior..... especially people that are perceived as bourgeois or a part of the LGBTQ community. We've heard these comments from our diverse group of friends and neighbors who frequent this wonderful place where you are tolerated. No one is requesting any special treatment from the staff, however a lesson in tolerance is in order. This gem of a restaurant would increase its profits if their front line employees were more tolerant and less off putting. We would have them cater many events but I am hesitant to have the conversation because I don't know what we may encounter. My friends who are in PR love the food as well and feel the same way. We go elsewhere, where we know by referral that the service is good. So, unfortunately, when you have a craving for their goodies you hope they are in a good mood. Bottom line.....This is Harlem which is diverse, which is why we call it home. We love the food. We make concessions for the behavior.... My best friend and I were on a mission to try out the different oxtails in the area, so we included this one in our taste test, even though another spot was right across the street. We called ahead of time, which may have been unnecessary, but it's always best when it's fresh. We got a large with rice and peas and vegetables which came out to 26.13$ after tax, which seemed like a fair price. Although the "large" seemed more like a medium, I think it would still feed two hungry people pretty decently. The dish was spiced really well, though I wish it would have had more of a spicy kick to it. The oxtail was super tender though, and could hardly keep on the bone, which is exactly what we were looking for. the rice and peas/veges were solid too.
