I've catered from them on a couple occasions. Ya know, sometimes you just don't feel like rolling and frying your own lumpia. I recently ordered two trays from them and a tray of turon. Everything was ready at the time and day required. They do charge a credit card fee, so consider using cash. They're also closed Mondays, and on weekends, they kinda close earlyish. I had a one-item rice combo with tripe kare-kare while my bf had a one-item rice combo with pork menudo. Their pork menudo was more fragrant than Tropical Hut a week prior. Please more edible meat in your turo-turo entrees! Whenever I buy Menudo, it is mostly fat, fat and fat with oily sauce that we end up throwing out. Same goes for Dinuguan - some bits of meat and the rest is fat. The Beef Kaldereta is also mostly tendon and the meat is tough. The cooking is good but would be better if more quality meat is used. I've been coming here since early 2000's but find ourselves going to Woodside Queens, paying the toll and gas for some real heavenly meaty Filipino food. This place can do better and I hope they do. I have a bunch of Fillipino coworkers and work right across the street so someone is always getting food here everyday. Single entree lunch special is $5 and plenty of food. We used to patronize this business for hot food and special Filipino groceries and they used to be good, but things changed starting with the arrogance of the cashier, who has no idea that customer service is about being nice to customers. I used to come here fairly often to buy groceries and sometimes prepared food. The selection is great, but the service sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. The last time I was there, I was picking up food for my mother and the lady working the counter felt like she couldn't be bothered. We had to keep saying what to each other because the TV was on so loudly. I asked if they had pancit and she said no. When I pointed to a noodle dish and asked what is that she rolled her eyes and corrected me and said that is pancit bihon. Not pancit. My family is from Tarlac and they always called the dish with rice noodles just pancit. Sue me. After I paid she gave me the money, put the receipt on the counter, and walked away. I've never been impressed with the food here. I married into a Filipino family and have had much home-cooked food with the family in 20+ years, and the food here always seemed to be lacking. Final straw was when I got a bag of pan de sal, which I later realized was expired, and became moldy within 2 days of purchase, so we took it back. Employee examined the bag thoroughly as if I were lying. Showed her the receipt from 2 days prior, exchanged it for a fresh bag. I drive out of my way to order food from Bistro Filipino in Orangeburg when I need food for a family party instead of ordering from here, even though it's more expensive (because it's better quality and taste). Great Filipino food. A lot of selections. Freshly cook. But I don't shop here because of the great food. I shop at Tropical Grille because of the super friendly workers! Especially ALJUR, Boni and Natty. They make me feel at home every time I'm there. They even remember my name and some of families name too! Impressive! Would gladly cross the Tappan Zee again to make a visit to this place. They have a great selection of Filipino products that are usually hard to find at other Asian markets (Tender Juicy Hot Dogs, Goldilocks frozen siopao). It seems this place is really popular for catering, during my visit several people were coming in and out picking up their catering orders. There is a small sitting area if you wanted to sit inside the store to eat. Ordered some food to go, took home an order of the beef Kaldereta and was not disappointed! First the customer service was not good, server has an attitude, Next the food wasn't cooked right obviously over cooked and the chef wasn't great either, the halo halo's ice wasn't shaved good therefore their like rocks in your mouth and the condiments that comes with it are the preserved ones that comes from canned or bottled ones not home made and lastly they don't come with ice cream. It's about 6 bucks you get a whole lot of rice and two huge scoop of your choice sides. You have a choice between 8 to 12 different sides. Than you get soup. The food is quite fresh and authentic. Before you leave do not forget to visit the desert fridge. Inside they have some halo halo which is a desert made of shaved ice with all types of goodies inside like jelly and beans with a huge cut of flan and evaporated milk. It's is delicious and a good way to cool off after eating a good helping of chocolate pork aka blood pork or some calderetta. Which is a banging stew made of beef or pork.
