I've been here twice and both experiences were great. The staff (and usually owners) make you feel like you're in their home and came over to hang out. The tour of the distillery is informative and to the point. The engineering minds will get their fix, basically. The tasting is of course, the best part. They have 4-5 offerings I believe, and they all have their niche. My personal favorite is one they don't seem to have on their website - it's a honey cinnamon whiskey. It was by far my favorite and was very smooth. I would definitely recommend a visit while in the Asheville area. Next door, you'll find Highland Brewing Company, which you might as well visit, since you're right there and all. It'd be a shame to not have a full experience. I believe they have food trucks that visit, but I haven't had an opportunity to try any during a visit (they weren't parked when we were there). Note: if you're from out of town (like me) be sure to check on the rules/regulations about buying to take home before you visit. Recently, the laws changed and you can buy ONE bottle per year from the distillery directly. ABC stores sell the alcohol as well, but supply is never guaranteed. Not a whole lot for me to say on this joint. We came out to the area for the Highland Brewery tour, but after the tour the tasting room was closed for a special event, they said the distillery next door has a tour/tasting, so we stopped in. When we arrived, the tour was about done, but we were able to join the tasting. They had 3 offerings at the time, one that i believe was not even released yet. Smoother than what you might think of as a moonshine, interesting to sample and worth every penny i didn't have to pay since it was free. read more

Is it okay for a girl to be in love with a distillery? I had wanted to tour this distillery for a long time. I finally made it! The bottle of Blonde had been given as gifts a few times. It is a nice "local" gift. Never having purchased it for myself, I sought out the actual distillery. The actual tour only took about 15 minutes. The tasting was another 15-20. My two favorites were the Oak and the Nectarine. I was a bit surprised by two things: 1. That I liked the Nectarine (fruity drinks are OKAY) 2. I preferred the Oak over the Blonde (I have been buying the Blonde for other people) However, you are only allowed to purchase one bottle, annually from the distillery (insert eye roll here). If you fall in love with the Nectarine, you must find a spirits store that carries it. Who needs moonshine when this is readily available? read more

We wandered into Troy and Sons after an unplanned visited to Highland Brewery and it turned out to be my favorite stop of our entire visit to Asheville! We looked at their website and saw they had a tour coming up so we decided to join. There were about 10 of us on the tour and Kenn seriously hit it out of the park. I've been on a distillery tour closer to home and it was interesting but this was on another level completely. Kenn told us all about the background of the company and its founder, Troy (after getting home I checked out their Facebook page and you can find quite a few great stories covering her and the business there). I'm not a whiskey drinker myself but next time I'm looking to buy whiskey for any purpose, Troy and Sons will be my go-to. After hearing Troy's story, how well she treats her staff, and all of Kenn's stories, I'm more than happy to support them and their future success. read more

We came to Troy and Sons on a whim after touring Highland Brewery's new digs next door, and it is well worth taking the time. The tour was free, and run by Troy's husband (yes, Troy is a woman); it was extremely informative and he was very personable and clearly passionate about the business. Knowing pretty much nothing about moonshine (a Appalachian name for corn based alcohol) it was so interesting to learn how it is made, and how the type of corn used dramatically changes the taste. Troy and Sons use a type of corn that has the highest fat content available, and only use the middle part of the distillation process, leaving the poorer tasting heads and tails out. The result is an incredibly smooth, distinct and flavorful clear alcohol, more reminiscent of tequila than anything else, though without the funky flavor. After the tour, you can sample all three of their products as well as the whiskey mixed into a delicious punch. I don't even like whiskey and I thought about buying both! As mentioned by others, due to state law you can't buy bottles on the premises, but any of the ABC liquor stores in Asheville carry both their moonshine and whiskey. It was a cool tour, don't waste the money buying the tour on groupon, you show up and they do the tours free. The highland brewery is way better!! We were there on their spring beer launch night which is awesome, highlands little hump, crisp light and a small amount of fruitiness to it, great beer!! Not to impressed with the moonshine, it's owned by a women but she's. Never there so does not represent a woman in the men's industry very well. The folks and I made our way over to Troy and Sons after hearing so many good things about it. And as a whiskey and moonshine drinker/fan, how could I resist a chance to try a homegrown distillery in Asheville? My parents aren't big drinkers, but loved the idea of touring the distillery. The tour started a few minutes late, but we didn't mind because it was a holiday weekend and were happy that they decided to open up anyway. Kudos! Side note: I tweeted them asking about hours for the holiday weekend and received a response immediately. I was really impressed by that. The tour was given by Troy's son, a very cute ginger who entertained the small group with jokes and lots of info. The crowd was a bit rowdy, in a good way, and he handled it very well. After the tour, we sampled the variety of whiskeys and moonshine they offer. I actually thought I knew a bit about my booze already, but I ended up learning a bunch of stuff about the process. I went to this distillery with three friends yesterday, intending to take the tour. We showed up early (4:30 PM) for the 5 PM tour, so we went to the Highland Brewery to have a pint while we waited. Time passed quickly & suddenly we realized we were going to have to chug our beers to make the tour time. My friend went over to tell them we were coming, then came back to our table & said the tour leader said they would start at 5:10 & that "we shouldn't chug our beers because they were too good to chug!" Sweet! So we walked over to Troy and Sons at 5:09, having finished our beers in a leisurely fashion. The tour had already started (weird, I thought you were starting at 5:10?), but they were just inside the distillery (having clearly just begun). So I opened the door to catch up - only to have the tour leader tell us, "You have to be on time when we start the tour - come back at six." We didn't come back. read more

Received an e-mail from Troy and Son s for their Moonshine. So I decided to purchase their product per their advertised e-mail "Just in time for Father's Day". Big disappointment as it never got there. I sent a courtesy e-mail letting the company know what happened, and all I got was chastised about 3 days to process and five days for delivery from their customer service rep. All she did was blame, blame, blame and took no responsibility. Second excuse, it was shipped out of Florida and we are in North Carolina? and to finish it off it was UPS fault. I would have been happy with "Thanks for letting us know about this so we can correct it". All I got was the feeling that I made a bad choice, and as time went on with the conversation, it just confirmed it. I told the customer service rep to do the math as they should have never sent out the e-mail claiming " just in time for Father's Day" as they could not make their own window. That the, e-mail came from Troy and Sons not Crown, Wine and Spirits or UPS (What's up brown?). Big disappointment. I bet this never gets on their front page of how their customers truly feel. read more

The bottle is elegant for moonshine. The nose is light, delicate, and fruity. The taste is very smooth and warm. The finish is easy and leaves a refined feeling that gently coats your throat and dissipates cleanly. read more

I was impressed. A small family run Distiller that is producing some fantastic White Whiskey . The tour is free and presented when we were there by Troy her self and her husband who were more then willing to answer any questions we had about the process and the product. Smoother then I expected and plenty of Samples to go around of all three types, one of which won't be released till next year. Sadly due to NCs standards you can't buy bottles on site, but you can purchase other items. If you are already up a Highland, you should certainly swing next door for a tour that is equally enjoyable and informative. read more

Free, very short tour. But worth the time to get some free samples of the different varieties (based on age, barrel), and a moonshine mix (they had a mojito with lemon, lime). You can't buy any on site, you can only purchase t-shirts. But combine a visit with Highland and it's worth it. read more

I ordered a bottle on a Thursday morning and paid $22.00 extra for 2 day shipping. It did not arrive until the following Tuesday afternoon. The product is fun to talk about at a get together but is standered at best. Not worth the effort of ordering or asking for above anyother whiskey. read more

North Canton, Ohio. Was visiting the Asheville area for Thanksgiving and stumbled on this distillery next to the Highland Brewing Company. I have been a whiskey drinker for over 35 years, drank Kentucky moonshine and my father, at the age of 85, still makes Croatian Silivovitz and this moonshine is by far the best I have ever had. You have to be a whiskey drinker to appreciate.Troy and her husband did an excellent job in describing their distiilary and the the complete process from start to completion. The BEST experience I had in Asheville. It was clear from the moment we got there that the staff is truly passionate about the product they make and it shows- the whiskey is exceptional. We were driving from Boone to Orlando with a quick stop in Asheville.The plan was to go to Highland and visit the distillery next door, but we ended up staying at Troy & Sons for hours. We talked to Kenn for a very long time and ended up feeling like we'd made genuine friendships. He even made sure we got home safely since we had completely missed our deadline and wouldn't end up in Orlando till 3am. Excellent tour and excellent quality of their drinks. I was surprised at the amount of their samples after their tour... their moonshine is unbelieveable. I had some friends in from out of town and brought my almost 2 year old on the tour and it didn't seem to be a problem... So when I say good for kids.. that gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.. obviously didn't mean it had a playland like McDonalds or anything but if the kids are well behaved you can still participate in the tour :) read more

I had been looking forward to the distillery tour at Troy and Sons for months, as I am local, and a fan of the beverage. The distillery tours I have attended on the bourbon trail have never failed to entertain and educate. Maybe I expected too much from Troy and Sons. My spouse and I walked through the door on Valentine's Day about 15 minutes early for the tour. Troy's husband was behind the bar, and 4 individuals were seated at the bar who looked approximately college age. There were no signs with information about where to gather for the tour, and my spouse and I were there over 5 minutes before Troy's husband even acknowledged our presence, not to greet us, but to tell us that if we were there for the brewery, it was next door. We said we were there for the distillery, which apparently didn't gain us any friendliness points, as we were promptly ignored again. As my spouse was wearing a tie, and I a dress, and we both were in a chipper mood initially, I'm not sure why Troy's husband would have mistaken our intent. I had to ask one of the 4 seated people if there was a sign-up sheet for the tour. There wasn't. Several other people began showing up for the tour, and were also ignored by the barkeep. They, too, had to ask other people in the tasting room about whether or not a sign up sheet existed. As I wasn't interested in attending the tour if Troy's unfriendly husband was giving it, we left. It doesn't seem like it should be a difficult thing to greet clients when they enter. Maybe someday we will try again, and someone more receptive to his or her potential customers will be leading the tour. read more

My fianceé and I visited Asheville Distilling Co. on the evening of Saturday, June 23rd. We had a great time tasting the different products and we enjoyed the distillery tour. Although, I want to compliment Asheville Distilling on our post tour experience. We had purchased a bottle of cinnamon whiskey and a bottle of nectarine whiskey to take back to Ohio with us. The bottles were wrapped in paper and a bag, and we took it home without looking at the bottles. When we returned home, we discovered that we had two nectarine whiskey bottles, and no cinnamon like we requested. I sent an email to the company and a picture showing the inconsistent product. Asheville Distilling was excellent in responding to my concern, even checking back with me twice because their email had gone to my spam folder, where I did not see it. After I finally responded, they were very quick to send me a new bottle of cinnamon whiskey to my home in Ohio. We now have both bottles, and are enjoying them! Asheville Distilling Company not only makes great products, but cares about their customers. We will definitely return when we visit Asheville again! read more
