We contacted Alex to come out and give us a design package to redo our entire landscape (front and backyard) I have to say: 1- he was on time to the minute, the other contractors were not. 2- he actually responded to texts during the the lull period when the designs were being done 3- He has a great sense of humor and was very honest on our situation with drainage in the yard and what was and was not a good idea as far as plant selections. 4- He was willing to work with us to achieve a budget goal we had in mind Once we got to the install phase the crew that came out were some of the nicest, hard working crew we have had on this property. This company is a joke. Their nursery prices on plants, palms and trees are highly above the industry standard and it is very hard to complete a landscape project with their morals. Bottom line, they are all about making money and the bottom dollar, not customer service. If you need a landscape installation job I highly recommend that you go with a smaller mom and pop shop company. I have been shopping at Troy's and was impressed by the knowledge and helpfulness of all the staff. When it was time to do a larger project, we used Troy's landscape division, led by Alex Barth. I was very unsure of the best plants to use in this climate as I am new to Florida. Alex is extremely knowledgeable and very patient considering all of the changes I kept making. On the first day, the crew arrives on time and Alex introduces each person to you, points out the foreman and also second in charge. The crew was professional, respectful, and extremely hard working. My front yard is beautiful!! Surpassed my expectations. And even more importantly, follow up is stellar. 2 small plants didn't make it and I was assured they will be replaced by the production manager. Also, Alex took extra time to talk to me regarding trimming and fertilization. We also had quite a bit of sod installed and the transition from the older sod to the brand new is seamless. I can not recommend Troy's higher. They've always been the place for great plants and planters and all my greenhouse needs, but they've expanded over the last couple years to include actual landscaping, which is just amazing. Their customer service is through the roof good, and their attention to detail and willingness to make sure their customers are 100% satisfied makes all the difference in the world! Their landscaping department is amazing. From start to finish, they have the staff and the ability to make sure all the jobs are done right. My experience was with their lead developer, Alex. He helped me figure out exactly what I wanted, what the best way to go about it was, and the best price to get it done for. Not only that, he made sure I was comfortable and taken care of every step of the way. And after the job was done, he made sure I was satisfied with all aspects. He was the nest customer service experience I've had since the 70s! I cannot recommend Troy's more! And I can't recommend Alex more. We found Troy's tropics after catching a segment on ABC7 where Alex was the plant expert on what to do if a freeze comes. We had landscaping done by another company a few years ago (I wont mention who but it was a poor experience) that conveniently left us with dead plants and too many unanswered questions. Long story short these guys delivered. Alex is one of the nicest guys we have dealt with in our home renovation projects. It's rare to find someone who keeps their word , who is on time and still answers the phone after the job is done. The crew that came out actually left our property cleaner than when they came. Really just an amazing experience start to finish. Update: we had a few plants not make it and based on our experience w the last company we used I figured we would have to wait a while to get new ones.. nope, these guys were out the next day! From start to finish, they are an absolute pleasure to do business with. We went to get a bougainvillea to replace one that wasn't doing well. There were 2 side by side, same plant, height, color, fullness. we picked up 1 and went to the check-out. The tan freckled young man said it was $23.99...We told him the other exact one was $21.99, we'll go get it, he said they are both $23.99. I told him it was against the law to not "honor" the sticker price, he said it was mismarked and it was $23.99. Just putting this out there...not very nice attitude people. I went here to buy some new flowers and shrubs for my grandma's backyard. The selection was pretty limited and the prices seemed a little high. We wanted some bougainvillea bushes, but they only had large ones for $15. The staff that day seemed inexperienced, so instead of asking for alternatives we just drove to Home Depot (which is unfortunate, because I like supporting local businesses). Home Depot had much better selection and prices, and the plants looked healthier to boot. read more

I shop at Troy's whenever I am near there. I live in the next town. I like their plants and find them knowlegible. One thing I really like is that they don't carry plants not suitable for this area or plants that are at the end of the proper planting season. Plants are grown to live in the area...they stand up to a lot and live longer! Yes the big stores may have some prices that are better but you will pay that time and time again because the plants don't adapt. I buy milkweed there for our butterfly garden...no chemicals so the butterflies come to lay their eggs :) Troys is also a supporter of local schools. We bought two fruit trees from Troy's Tropics a few months ago and they are already producing fruit. For such a small tree it is overburdened with fruit and we have to prop it up. I have traveled into Troy's nursery several times to buy plants. The staff has always been super friendly and knowledgeable. I have always left there so happy to get home with my new plant. They also have a great gift shop as well. It is always a pleasure to deal with a locally owned business and these people go out of their way to give you good sound advice, I even had their manager talk me out of certain plants due to my habit of forgetting to water. I thought I was doomed to never own a plant but they helped me pick low maintenance plants that I liked. I was waiting to write the review until I was sure that my landscaping was going to stick! I know watering is a big part of the success, but I wanted to tell you the reason why I chose Troys Tropics. To start, I visited 5 other nurseries and Troys plants and trees were the healthiest. They were green, even during the drought times. I was greeted by a very helpful young man who assisted me with my purchase. He measured, suggested, assisted, and planned for me. I reserved my trees and felt like I was really taken care of with excellent customer service. A week later the landscaping team showed up to put up the trees and the men were very professional and confirmed the layout. They took care in digging to ensure that my watering system was in the right location for success of the plants and trees. The fertilizer they use was great. I will purchase my landscaping needs from Troys again...not just cause they are local, and not because their trees were the best, but because they truly offered me the best customer service....NICE people! read more

Please be aware that this company can discriminate in choosing to do business with you. Alex Barth will be glad to take your money up front for a landscape design, and then out of the blue weeks later, into the design phase drop you like a hot potato. He will waste your time waiting to get an appointment and waste even more time holding on to your money deciding whether to do the job. After several delays, they are all of a sudden 'To Busy' to complete the job. It is truly shocking in this day and age to see the 'behind the scenes pick and choose' who you want to work with attitude. As a nursery, their regular staff and products are great. But I CAUTION anyone who tries to use Alex in their Landscape design services. Be prepared to be dropped and cast aside at a moments notice, when HE suddenly decides he doesn't want to finish the job. Trying to work with Alex is like walking on thin ice, very touchy and unpredictable fellow. As a long-time resident of Sarasota, I was lucky enough to finally purchase a home 18 months ago, and landscaping was a top priority. The only place I called was Troy's. Though I have never owned my own house, I have done small landscaping projects at other places where I have lived in town, and any time I needed quality plants and/or advice, it has always been Troy's. Speaking with Alex, I told him what I had written above. I also asked him to be fair so I would not have to call anyone else. From the first conversation and then to design and implementation to eventual planting, I have zero complaints. He and everyone involved were polite and professional to both me and my wife. And fair? After my wife and I switched colors on our oleander selection, it did not occur to us how it would affect the scheme that we had first designed and agreed upon. The result was too much of one color on one side of the house. We debated on telling Alex since the mistake was ours and everything was planted. However, I did call Alex and asked that he change qty12 of a gallon-sized plant for a lighter color. I also asked that he bill me for an additional "idiot" charge. After all, he would need to pull up the 12 darker plants they had just planted the day before and replace them! He came out the next day, replaced them with the lighter color, added plants around my mailbox that were not part of our original deal, and charged me nothing extra. With fairness like this and Troy's Tropics reputation for quality and service, why would you go anywhere else? read more
