You won't see my food in the pictures because I had to take it to go and eat it in the car. I will say my sandwich was delicious though, but they apparently lost my original order or gave it to someone else. There were 3 of us on our "ticket" - you scan a QR code and order from your phone and you include info on where you are sitting. My beer came out speedy, but my husband's only made it to him after our friend went up and asked about it (that was our second attempt, first time we asked a server walking by). My husband and son's food came out in a normal amount of time and at least 45 minutes later and after asking 3x mine still had not arrived. So we finally got someone to help, who gave me a paper menu to check off my original order and then she asked the kitchen to make mine first. At that point everyone we were with was finished their meals and we had somewhere to be so I just ate my food in the car. I came here on a Sunday afternoon with a larger group of friends! The first thing that stood out to me was the cute vibe of the place. It's a very dark, cozy restaurant. The ordering system was odd. You have to create an account, order your food, and enter payment info via the website. I wasn't a huge fan of that system but it was definitely unique. Looking further into the menu, I noticed a lack of variety. This place is mainly sandwiches, wraps, salads. It reminds me of a bougie Subway. The sandwich I ordered was good, but it was something that I could've easily made at home. As for the parking, there's parking in the adjacent garage for free on Sunday's. I've been coming to Tru for all of my grad school years so far. It's great when you need to get some work done in the early afternoon but want to slide into getting some wine later on. Their sandwiches are great with good quality ingredients and on the affordable end of entrees. There's plenty of seating and outlets for working that transition well to gathering space for happy hour purposes. I love their ambiance and decor - it stands in stark comparison to the grungier bar options on Franklin Street and in Carrboro. My wrap (tortilla size) was half the size of my wife's and one of our group received a completely incorrect order (ordered roast beef, Turkey, and ham, and received just roast beef). We were told nothing could be done other than a refund because the kitchen was now closing. TRU is one of my favorite spots in Chapel Hill. It offers a wonderful overall experience with delightful staff, a welcoming atmosphere to all, and delicious food and drinks at an affordable price. I'm always impressed at how TRU can keep its prices low with such fresh ingredients. TRU has a laid back and beautiful atmosphere that is always inviting and accessible to everyone, whether inside at the nice wood carved tables or outside on the open patio. It's not intimidating like other wine bars can be and offers food and drinks at price points more accessible than other restaurants in the area. To call TRU classist is simply laughable, given how they've made such an effort to keep their prices low when others in the area have not. And I think we can all agree that ordering online is not some challenging novel experience -- it's 2022, y'all. We've been doing this for years across so many aspects of our lives and it's become a convenient system for most. The girl at the bar couldn't even take my order at the register - you HAVE to do it through the website. With the website ordering system, you don't really know when you're going to get your order or if they even received it. We actually found out they didn't even see half our order and had to go down and tell them what we put into the website. And I don't want to make a whole account to buy a glass of wine. Also, what's with the plastic cups? Again, i know things have had to change with the pandemic. But other places have adapted without losing quality of service. Please, just let people place orders verbally at the register and invest in a dishwasher with a Sanitization setting. I loved Tru a lot for a long time and I want this business to succeed, but you guys have got to figure this out. read more

For the kind of place that it is, Tru is excellent. The vibe is casual, relaxed, and cozy. The food is SUPER affordable for what you get. They've got a decent selection of alcohol. Employees are friendly. You're not going to get a gourmet sandwich and the best cocktail of your life here, but for a casual place this is great. Their food is, at *worst*, average. I.e., you won't be disappointed by it. (And they don't charge extra for avocado!) I also really love that this place is super versatile - it's great for a drink with friends on a Fri/Sat night but it's also the perfect place for a work session on the weekdays/weeknights. We had a lovely lunch at Tru on Oct. 18. They have a very covid friendly set up with a great upstairs seating area. You can order your lunch off an online app and the staff deliver up to you. We had toasted sandwiches and a couple of glasses of wine and it was great. The service was very friendly and fast and the food and wine was yum.
