I usually go to Thai Villa nearby but they didn't have any…read moreavailable slots and I was desperate for some TLC after sleeping on a chair and then sitting through a 13-hour flight - my back, shoulders, and neck were hurting badly. Mandarin Healing Spa's good reviews were promising but the massage was one of the worst I've had in recent memory. First, my masseuse was extremely rough, almost sloppy, in terms of technique. There were several parts where she was just raking her elbow or her fist on my back mechanically instead of working out the knots/kinks. I'm not necessarily looking for Mandarin Oriental-level of care but I didn't care for the sensation of feeling like a dummy being whaled on. And I mean that literally - she was actually punching me at one point. Hygiene was also an issue. From the constant sniffles, it sounded like she had a cold and even sneezed but kept right on going (here's hoping she sneezed into her elbow and not on her hands ... still, you should go wash your hands). The bed itself was not comfortable. Again, not expecting a ton out of a no-frills spot but I do prefer not to have particle board under the head rest digging into my cheek. When I checked the mirror afterwards, I had a lovely vertical indent going down my face. The interaction at the end left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. They're incredibly insistent that you pay the tip, if not the whole amount, in cash, which I can understand with very small businesses but I also would've appreciated a heads-up on the phone when I booked that using a credit card adds an extra $3.75 to the cost. Also, the manager was very pushy in asking for a 25% tip ($20 for a mediocre 60-minute $80 massage) and kept saying how most customers do $20 for an even $100. Regardless of how true that may be, a customer should be allowed to tip however much they want based on the experience they received, and, if it weren't for my desperation to take a shower and wash the germs off me, I would have stood firm. I've never had someone outright demand a higher tip and it was enough to make me never want to go back. Waste of $100.

I drove 30 minutes there, 30 minutes back, and waited outside their office for 20 minutes and all they thought to do was ask when I wanted to reschedule. Really frustrating considering they charge you full price if you cancel within 24 hours yet they don't reciprocate. Other times were good for what it's worth, but it was bad enough that I've still remembered it from weeks ago and still am posting this.

After just one session with Jen, I regained 75% mobility. That alone felt miraculous, but what impressed me even more was how deeply she cared about my healing. She took the time to ask questions about my pain and limitations, then went right to work using a blend of Eastern and Western techniques tailored specifically to me. Jen's approach is unlike any massage I've ever experienced. She even used her feet while holding onto a ceiling bar to apply the perfect pressure, which I did not know could be so effective! She explained that I would have some soreness after the release and that this was normal as my stiff muscles and tendons began to heal. She was absolutely right and the soreness was real but the "good kind," and after the first day my soreness went away and I had significantly more mobility. I've now returned for three weekly sessions, and each time I feel less sore after and gain more freedom of movement. I am now at 90% mobility after 3 sessions and will update further after my next appointments. What makes Jen exceptional is that she doesn't just repeat the same routine. She carefully identified the areas of my shoulder that need the most work each time. She's used a variety of techniques on me, including deep tissue, hot stones (love this one!) and the theragun. She even recognized that my other side was compensating, so she loosened that side as well. While physical therapy focuses on exercises and strengthening, and regular spa massages are usually about relaxation, Jen's therapeutic massage bridges the gap. It is both therapeutic and relaxing and targeted for recovery. Five stars all the way!
