I didn't come to Treehouse looking for recovery. I came because I was running out of time. By the time I arrived, the damage was already real. My body was failing. My mind was loud. In the full review, I write about a specific event in which Akua went above and beyond expectations to take care of me, proving that they truly do not treat clients as just bodies to be profited off of. Any of my friends that tell me they are struggling I will be sending here. If you are shopping around for options, it doesn't get much better than this. FULL REVIEW: Wow. What a Godsend of a program. I really cannot believe how lucky I was to find this place when I did. I was in a pretty rough spot; I knew I needed to go back in for treatment and I felt hopeless because every rehab I was calling around to in OC no longer accepted my insurance (great stuff, America). Finally Akua comes up in my never-ending search. They are one of two rehabs left in OC that still take my insurance. Even still, I am hesitant to commit because the last place I was at ended up being a nightmare (terrible food, uncomfortable beds, a therapist that was incredibly dismissive and apathetic, staff forgetting to take people to important doctors meetings, the list goes on). I call Akua, they tell me that they have their groups focusing on trauma-processing, personalized therapy, emotional support, and they dabble in less traditional therapeutic practices like yoga, & sound baths. SOLD! Come get me NOW! I was in the substance abuse side. The groups were diverse, legitimately helpful, not all straight out of the AA book; a program where the intention was to dissect, understand, and get to the emotional root of why we as people can't seem to drink or use drugs like a normal person can, not just straight "drugs are bad don't do them" D.A.R.E. propaganda. This difference in approach was absolutely critical for someone like me. The house was clean, the food was great, like actually great not just rehab-great, they took us out on different outings, went to the movie theaters twice, barbecued every weekend, legitimately enjoyed myself, and made some friends I hope to keep for life. The staff was so lovely, I want to specifically give shoutouts to Amber (love you girl miss you!!!), Mel, Clarice (if you're reading this, I hope the lambs have stopped screaming), Justin, and Garret, I looked forward to hanging out with them everyday. They all work so so so hard, they've got a lot more daily tasks as day-time techs than I have seen at any other treatment center, and they still would find the time to get to know us and tolerate our buffoonery. If you're an insomniac like me, you'll get to meet the nighttime tech Holly, a total vibe & a hard worker who was helping keep the place nice and clean all on his own volition. My therapist Paul was fantastic. My case manager Robbie is the coolest guy and helped me to get into a sober-living house and set me up in a program where a non-profit would help pay 2/3 of my rent so long as I was in Akua's outpatient program, DEFINITELY take advantage of this yall. Now there's one extra specific detail I want to recount because it proves to me just how different this place is from other treatment centers. When I left residential, I was slated to go to a certain sober living I will not be naming, and when I showed up they had me do a UA test, and the detox medications were still showing up in my system (a very normal thing to happen). I am immediately accused by this man of being high, I try to tell him to talk to my case manager who will show him my lab test results proving that my numbers have been steadily going down since I detoxed. He basically refuses and tells me to kick rocks. I call my case manager in tears, and he immediately sends the head of IOP to come and grab me. Akua let me stay an extra two days in residential, completely out of their own pocket, while finding me another sober-living to move into. I could not believe it. Any other program would NEVER have gone to this length to ensure I was safe, especially since they are losing money doing this. I will never fully be able to express how grateful I am for this. I was in Akua's outpatient program for a total of 4 months. This program helped to establish some structure and routine within my life while getting reintroduced to society (gross) and planning next-steps career wise. Richard, the head of IOP, is incredible, I would sometimes skip out on my therapy sessions to make sure that I got to listen to his groups. Karen, Gabby, Jolene, and Q are all fantastic and very deeply-caring, they lead great groups as well. My case manager Candace is one of the most lovely people ever, and she always kept me in check and called me on my BS. I have run out of words Yelp will let me write, and I want to keep going! I love this program! Akua made me a better man!
