Although I've been to other toastmaster clubs I made the decision to join this club immediately after my first visit back in Oct of 2018. The decision to join was very clear to me based on the following: 1- The size of the group and place. The group size is just right (Around 20 people attending on average) and the room is spacious. 2- The club meets once a week at 7:00pm so this doesn't not interrupt with work or other daily activities 3- The meeting is 90 mins long and not rushed which is critical 4- Most important the warm reception I got from the members 5- The club has a mentor program to guide new members which I thought was very cool It's been 6 months since I joined and it has been an extremely rewarding and fun experience. I was a member of toastmasters back when I lived in Seattle. After I moved to the Bay Area, I spent more than a month in visiting different clubs. Among all the six clubs that I have been to, The True Talking Toastmasters clearly stood out. The atmosphere is welcoming and positive. There are quite a few outstanding speakers from whom I can learn. What impressed me most is the club officers. Well ... I am not one to speak in front of people, let alone in group but this club had help me alot in developing my speaking skill as well as my self confidence. When you think about a public speaking club, normally you would think as you know, whole bunch of nerds get together and do their speech. Not quite! In fact, it is quite the opposite. I was invited by an ex-coworker of mine to attend the meetings. I can't speak much about the first meeting as I was late for about 35 minutes or so. But, still, the welcome was warmed and sincere. Couldn't ask for more. The second meeting was so much fun. The lady that dressed in pirate hat and talked like a pirate introduced the rest of the members with their assigned roles. Each of this team member played along and spoke like real pirates:-). You could hear the laughing from miles away. Okay, not quite, but the atmosphere was definitely very positive. In each meeting, they announced each member with its role, then they have 3 different speakers speak on the given topics and they are being evaluated on by the specified evaluators as well as the rest of the members. The best part is the table topic, which is literally impromptu speech which lasted about 2 minutes or so. This is the best way to brush on your speaking skill in front of warm audiences that will give you their most sincere feedbacks in the hope of molding your public speaking skill as well as giving you a lot of chances to learn how to be an effective evaluator. I had so much fun and I am ready to join the club. Here I come! read more

I attended the San Jose Toastmasters meeting as a guest. There was plenty of parking at the meeting venue! The meeting started on time. Every member had a pre-assigned role and contributed equally to create a successful session. The meeting is divided into three sections - speakers (prepared speeches), table topics (impromptu 2 min speeches where everyone is welcome to participate) and review for the speakers. The members created a supportive environment for the speakers to practice public speaking. My favorite part of the meeting was giving feedback. I think acquiring the skills to provide constructive feedback is very crucial for everyone - a wife, husband, teacher, friend etc. After the meeting ended on time majority of the members headed for chai (spiced tea!) and snacks to a member's house who lives close to the meeting venue. All members of this chapter of toastmasters were very friendly and created a cordial environment for me, a guest at their meeting. At the end of the meeting I learned to applaud for others and to listen attentively. This chapter allows you to practice public speaking, bond with others and have a great time! This club is by far the best club in San Jose. Not only because they have really good speakers, but because everyone in the club is warm and friendly. They will really make you feel welcome. I appreciate this Toastmasters group because the members are welcoming and follow a schedule as best as possible. I am inspired by some of the ESL speakers and moved by their will to excel and break out of their shells. It's not easy for everyone to be engaging, eloquent and empowered when speaking and even harder still for those that don't speak the language fluently. I still remember the first meeting I attended. I felt anxious and extremely nervous. I couldn't imagine myself getting used to speaking in public, mostly because English is my third language. At first, I was reluctant to join Toastmasters, but I overcame my fear and finally decided to be part of this club. What impressed me most was the coordination and the organization of every meeting, the seriousness and the warm welcome from all the members. At True Talking Toastmasters we feel like a family.
